[WIP] Common Issues, Tips & Useful Links - HTC One S

I thought I make this thread to give us something we can easily link to for common issues.
Recommendations
I highly recommend these, they will help make life easier on yourself.
All-In-One Toolkit, This will make it easy to flash the recovery and boot.img.
TWRP, The best recovery going for this phone.
Flash Image GUI, This lets you flash the boot.img without the pc and makes life even easier when swapping roms.
I also highly recommend doing a backup whenever you try another rom or a mod and if its a mod then I recommend you wipe cache and dalvik after flashing the mod.
Common Issues
Bootloops
Now the most common one is not seeing the boot animation. This most likely because you didn't flash the boot.img/kernel. You need to extract the boot.img from the rom zip and use the Toolkit to flash it.
Bootloop to Recovery
This is mostly like the same as above but you using CWM recovery. I recommend you flash TWRP and then the boot.img and just to make sure wipe and reflash the rom.
Can't get into Bootloader/Fastboot mode
Hold the power down and when the buttons start flashing start holding Vol- when it stops flashing let go of the power but still holding Vol- then press and hold the power button for a fews sec and should boot into the bootloader. This may take a few tries if you using CMW because CWM is a bit buggy and can make it harder to get into the bootloader if you in a bootloop.
Can't Mount SD
This is most likely down to using factory reset in the bootloader while having a custom recovery. Now if you lucky TWRP will mount it as mass storage and then you be asked by windows to format it. If that don't happen then you will need to flash the stock recovery and use factory reset in bootloader. And if you still not working check this thread here for some more ways of fixing it.
Tips
Flashing Roms
I feel the best way of going about this is to flash the boot.img with the Toolkit or using Flash Image GUI. Next load up TWRP recovery then go to wipe. Now select factory reset and then system and once you done that flash your rom and wait 5-10 minutes for it to load.
Roms with AROMA Installer
The roms with this installer also has a wipe option. I recommend you don't use wipe in the installer if you already wiped with TWRP.
Useful Links
***Emergency Thread*** Here To Help!, Good place to go if its not covered here or still having issuses.
Massive Rom Collection, Big list of roms and kernels with the links to them.
Well its a start for now will come back later to add more but please do let me know if you got any ideas to make it better.

[Q] I need help, bad.

Ok so my nephew got a hold of my phone and i'm not quite sure what he did. I had my nexus rooted and I guess he tried to install the new OTA, it didn't work so he wiped the memory card and cache etc..
now the phone doesn't go past the bootloader. Is that what it's called? the androids on it and the options are Reboot bootloader, reboot, recovery, and power off.
when I plug the phone in it doesn't get detected. Am i completely screwed here? Please let me know. I tried searching but I realized i'm not quite sure what to even search for. Any and all help is greatley appreciated!!
it doesn't sound like you are screwed but you may have lost all your data not found in the /sdcard. a few questions; did you have a custom recovery installed? and can you get to recovery?
If you can't even get into recovery then you will have to use fastboot to flash your phone. it's not hard just search for the specifics.
Thank you! yeah I have clockwork mod v 3.0.0.5 i was playing around with that and there is a recovery option.
i was also reading about a nandroid backup (lol not too sure what it is). but it looks like i have to go into recovery and load that file. if i click on mount store or whatever it recognizes on my pc. im currently trying that and keeping my fingers crossed. if not ill have to look into reflashing the phone. hope i fix this. thanks a lot though at least i have another option hah!
Look at the top of your phone. It should say something in red text.
Usually this means you've lost the Boot.img or System.img so the phone can't boot. Pushing a custom recovery like Clockwork then flashing a ROM/restoring NAND backup will fix it.
1. Download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093
2. Mount it on your computer, enable USB storage in Clockwork Recovery
3. Paste it in there.
4. Unmount
5. Nandroid restore from that file
--- OR ---
1. Download a custom ROM (i recommend cyanogenmod because its awesome.. just my opinion -- flash gapps after CM7).
2. flash the ROM
3. there you go
but if you want OTAs and stuff like that.. use nandroid backup
FIXED!!! thanks dude. i pretty much had this last part figured out but was a bit hesitant to try it. instructions helped a huge deal.
thanks guys. really appreciate the help. saved me a heart attack haha

[Q] New Rom

I have just successfully unlocked my bootloader and rooted my AT&T HTC One X. My first time doing this. What I would like is a Jelly Bean Rom to flash and where to find step by step instructions on how to get it up and running. I just cant seem to find it anywhere out there. I'm very new to this and I just want to get this done properly. I did the bootloader unlock and root through TWRP all in one tool kit. I'm assuming I would flash a Rom from the same program? I also would like to have as much a "vanilla" Jelly Bean ROm as possible and one that is stable and fully functional. If anyone can direct me it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance !!

3) *make a backup in case anything goes wrong*
4) flash boot.img (extract it from rom file) and use this to do it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962428
5) reboot into recovery (boot into bootloader, then reboot into recovery)
6) full wipe (cache, davlik, factory, etc)
7) go to install and find the .zip file of the rom and flash it, be patient it may take a while
8) flash gapps
9) reboot system and u'll be done be patient for this one too, first boot always takes a while
hope this helped

I really appreciate your response. Don't I have TWRP already from when I unlocked bootloader and rooted? Next question.... what ROM and where do I download it from? Do I download to PC or phone? Sorry for all the questions but I dont want to mess up my phone. Hope you can help me....Thanks again
Download goo.im install TWRP via goo.im or from fastboot. Test to see if get into the recovery. If so you can flash away. Follow instruction from the video that twrp puts out or from the how to thread. I'm running AOKP now for nearly a week and so far so good. Just be sure to start by backing up your phone with twrp or the other pimp apps available. Watch Video or follow directions on twrp thread for your device. Goo. im is darn noon friendly. Here's a screenshot of an example screen

once the bootloader is unlocked, then you are able to install the recovery. you can check if you have it already, but its likely that you dont.
its fine if you download from your phone, but for starters it is much simpler to download from the computer and transfer to the phone
and for what ROM to flash, since you want a jb rom i'd recommend starting with a stable rom, so that would mean you should stay way with roms with the "unofficial, beta, alpha",etc labels. also CM10 is in a pretty unstable state too, so stay away from that
i wouldn't necessarily recommend a jb rom for starters, but it seems to me that you'd like one so i would start with nocturnal'd dirty rom. its stable, smooth, and has some really nice tweaks

You can download ROMs via goo.im on your phone like CM10, AOKP.. just read up a bit and get it right. The other poster's response is right on the money. Follow those links and you are good to go.

No offense to any other devs, but I agree dirty rom is pretty solid and polished with a very active dev. As for installing, download rom and dirty gapps. Also head to play store and download flash image GUI...
1. Open flashgui app. Browse to dirty rom and select. OK it by following instructions and don't worry about the WiFi bit. (Its just a disclaimer). It'll automatically flash just the kernel.
1. Once successful, immediately boot into recovery. Wipe cache, wipe dalvick, factory reset, wipe system. Press back button, hit install. Find your dirty rom. Swipe to flash it. Once successful, immediately flash dirty gapps.
2. Reboot system. (First boot takes a little longer)
3. Swim in the butter!

Help!New to flashing one X, how do I flash this ROM and is there a stock ROM on here?

Hey Guys.. Just bought a HTC one x. It came rooted and flashed with CM10.. I dont want that, looking for the STOCK rom it came with or something close/debloated..
I found this.. But have no idea on how to flash.. If someone can be kind enough to help me out Id really apreaciate it!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029432
Also, Is there a STOCK rom like just a flashable.zip on here? Please someone help. Thanks guys hope to be able to contribute alot to the ONE x down the line.
To flash that ROM, download to your phone, or copy it from your computer to the phone's SD. In TWRP do a factory reset, wipe Dalvik and cache, flash the ROM. If you are on hboot 1.14, flash the boot.img using fastboot (you have to extract it from the ROM zip using a unzip program on your computer).
For stock rooted ROMs (flashable in TWRP just like custom ROMs) look under stock rooted in my index thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Thanks for the response..
What is hboot 1.14? Is that another recovery?
Btw, how do I know what stock rooted rom is for me? I have a ATT htc one x
When i do find the stock one, do I just download to my phone, factory reset, wipe dalvik and cache and flash it? Or do i need other specials instructions..?
Sorry for all the questions, I am so used to Samsung s2 flashing, so there are a few things that i need to get used to.
Like what is a bootloader?

Phone is rooted and I assume it also has bootloader.. Because when i go to reboot options previously it said reboot to bootloader..
I downloaded clean rom 5.1
Put on my SD card
went into recovery
wiped data/factoryreset
Install Clean ROM
Clean rom took me to aroma
I selected everything I wanted in Aroma
Aroma froze at 10%
I waited
Then I got inpatient and thought its frozen to I powered it down to start over
now its bootlooping
Cant get back into recovery... Just watching it flash white to HTC screen then to the colorful X...
Press and hold volume down and power button until bootloader white screen appears.
Use volume keys to navigate .Go down to recovery and click power button to select it.you should now boot into recovery.
I think you just need to be patient and wait.
If not.
Go flash the boot.img file from the cleanrom zip in fastboot

You actually need to release the power button to actually get the bootloader screen to come up. But keep holding volume down rocker until the bootloader screen appears.
Alright, i got that to work! thanks alot..

All of the ROMs and mods listed on my index thread will work for your version of phone. If you want a stock experience, AT&T stock 2.20 is probably a good enough place to start as any.
Hboot (bootloader) is the white screen that comes up after you've done the volume down/power sequence. On that screen it will tell you what hboot version you are on. What version do you have?

So i guess i have hboot 1.14, does this also mean my bootloader is unlocked and if so, how would i flash that stock ROM?
Thanks man you have been a big help thus far
Yes, bootloader is unlocked, and hboot is 1.14.
Also, please confirm that your recovery is TWRP (should have a blue screen that says "Team Win" when you boot recovery. If not, come back here and tell us.
Normally, all you would have to do to flash the stock rooted ROM is:
1) Download or move the file to the phone's internal SD memory.
2) Go into hboot, then boot TWRP recovery.
3) In TWPR (NOT in hboot) go to "Wipe" and do a factory reset. You will lose any data on the phone, except the SD. So back anything up you don't want to lose before you start any of this.
4) Wipe Dalvik and cache
5) Select "Install" in TWRP and select the ROM file.
6) Wait until its done flashing and select "reboot".
Now, since you are on hboot 1.14, you have an added complication. The hboot plugged the hole by which boot.img was flashed automatically in recovery. Since you can no longer do this, you have to extract it and flash it from your computer using a tool called fastboot. In short, the steps are:
a) Setup fastboot using the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754018
b) With the ROM file on your computer, use a unzip program to open the ROM zip file.
b) In the base directory, you should see a file called "boot.img". Unzip this file, and move it to the folder that contains fastboot.exe (that you just setup in step (a).
c) Connect your phone via USB, go into bootloader, and select fastboot mode.
d) Flash the boot.img with the command:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
e) Reboot
This is probably a bit overwhelming, as having hboot 1.14 forces you to learn how to use fastboot (which is in itself, a bit intimidating). But if you want to do any other ROM flashing, you should know how to do this, as your hboot will require it for almost all ROMs.
Alternately, you can just try to flash CleanROM again. Not sure why it stalled, it should work fine. Plus, CleanROM flashes the boot.img for you, so no need to do it separately. This would at least get you on a somewhat stock, Sense based ROM to start with. And CleanROM is quite nice. Its mostly stock, just a few added features, performance enhancements, and bloat is cleaned up.
Yes I do have twrp recovery 2.3.XX
Ok I will go through those steps and ask any questions if I get stuck..
Btw how would you suggest flashing clean rom? I tried it according to OP instructions but no dice..
what are the proper wiping procedures for it?
Thanks again you are alot of help I feel better about keeping this phone
EDIT: Just flashed clean rom again to try it out..
I flashed like this
reboot to TWRP
wipe factory reset, wipe dalvik, cache,
flash rom
go through aroma install boot.img
put all the addons i want
let it rip, then it rebooted, and started to bootloop so im now restoring a back up..
Do i need to wipe SYSTEM after i factory reset?
EDIT: Looking for the 2.20 stock rom, but the mirror is gone/download is gone.. do you know where I can find another download for it? Its not on scottsroms.com any more
Wiping SYSTEM is not needed. It just formats the portion of the memory the ROM resides, so this gets wiped when you flash the ROM, anyway.
Not sure why CleanROM is not flashing or booting. I'm on the older hboot. You may go over to the CleanROM thread, and do some reading, or ask there.

[Q] Help Flashing ROM

Thanks for your help and time in advance. I am trying to flash a ROM to my At&T HTC One X. It is HBOOT 1.14 running ics 2.20. I am specifically trying to flash ViperXL and have failed about 3 times so far. I keep getting my phone stuck in a boot loop. It is no longer in a boot loop because I have flashed the factory ROM. My phone is rooted and I have TWRP as my recovery. I have some specific questions to ask:
1) What version of ViperXL should I use? I think I might be trying to flash the wrong version.
2) Do I leave the entire file zipped when I put it on my sd card or do I specifically extract the boot.img file and keep that file separate from the zip file?
3) If I have Flash Image GUI from the playstore should I use that to flash it? If so do I still follow step 2 above?
This is what I have been doing so far:
1) Downloading this file: ViperXL 3.2.1 - Android File Host (685MB) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868236
2) Using WInRar to extract its contents and move it to my sd card.
3) Using Flash Image GUI to select boot.img and then pressing flash.
4) Rebooting my phone and then wa-la, boot loop. I have actually been following a youtube video on how to do it but I'm not getting no luck.
If there is an easier way please inform me. I am a noob but love this stuff. Please be specific with instructions so I can enjoy an awesome custom ROM.
Again, thank you for your time and have a great day.

wipe cache dalvik system and factory reset in recovery
fastboot flash boot boot.img or use the gui to flash the boot.img extracted from the viper rom
install the viper rom within recovery.
read more before you end up with a brick.
it says all this right in the second post of the viper thread
"Download the ViperXL 3.0.0 from the download section
Confirm the md5 checksum is correct on both files (it will be noted on the dl page)
Place the file somewhere on your phone storage
Reboot to TWRP recovery
Backup current ROM
Install ROM using twrp and select wipe during aroma install if coming from another base
If you have 1.14 hboot you will need to flash the boot.img in fastboot. You will need to extract this from the ROM zip. I have found the following tool useful: [TOOL] HTC Auto Boot.img Installer (One Click Tool)
Reboot and Enjoy"
All Flash Image GUI does is flash the boot.img, which is a small part of the overall ROM. You also need to have the entire ROM zip on your SD card. Boot into bootloader, then go into TWRP recovery. Once in TWRP, go to Wipe, do a factory reset (do not factory reset in bootloader, as it will corrupt your SD memory), wipe Dalvik, wipe cache. Then select Install, and navigate to the ROM zip. The ROM will begin to install. AROMA will then launch, giving you a variety of install options specific to ViperXL. Go through the AROMA options. Then when the ROM install is complete, TWRP will give you the option to reboot. Reboot and enjoy.
Do not extract rom lol. Flash it as is!

Wow how did you figure this out? I now know why my sd corrupted on me once. I did click that once in my life. In fact it put me i have the "soft brick and gonna cry" category, complete with post in q&a.
There needs to be a sticky for things like this.. Little nuggets of knowledge.
The sticky should also contain the factory recovery.
And then the sticky should be mandatory before you are allowed to download roms, recoveries, etc. It would save headache for many.

Its a fairly common mistake, and as DvineLord stated, it been discussed quite a bit in various places.

Baffled about my Tab 2

I have a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 gt3113. It is rooted, and I want to install a rom. The factory rom/kernel lags...get stuck ....and with all I have read the roms out there make a big difference. But I'm having a problem....I'm using rom manager and rom toolbox and I cant seem to install a rom. It load the rom whether from the computer or the download option but when it boot into recovery I get an error saying that the sd card is not found and I just end up manually re-booting the device....Ive tried this a few times choosing different things at the screen...a(abd....cashe....external storage....) it all ends up the same.....anyone have any idea what this means? I'm learning as I go....and was thinking about un-rooting my device then rooting it again.....maybe I did something wrong?
Complety bewildered....

if you are able to boot into recovery then please wipe cache partition and do a factory reset and then try to revert to stock rom

For starters, stay away from ROM Manager! It's known to cause different sorts of problems on different devices while installing CWM and ROMs. I have only good things to say about ROM Toolbox in terms of tweaks and utilities, but never used it for ROM installation, and would suggest not to. Just download the ROM you want from its original source, put it on internal or external storage, and flash using your recovery (my personal all-time favourite is PhilZ Touch CWM, not sure what you are using). Do the proper wipes before flashing (full wipe is always recommended, especially between stock and CM/AOSP ROMs. Make sure you also flash other possibly applicable components (depends on the ROM and your preferences) -- gapps, kernel, etc. See if it works that way. I just don't see any reason to use 3rd-party apps for "ROM management" -- the simpler the process, the better.
I'm going to try to put a new rom on the tab tonight without using a program,i have a question though...I have to press power and the up volume or power and the down volume when i flash the new rom

You are in recovery... To get to download mode on P31xx for using Odin you need to press and hold Volume DOWN + Power.
ok.....so I need to be in the download mode to download anything including roms and kernels....so I have to use odin to download stuff then?

I think you need to do some research.

Man, that sounds scary! You really need to do some reading on the basics, before you screw something up.
You can flash ZIP files from recovery, including ROMs, kernels, recoveries, and apps. However, you need Odin, a PC connection, and a download mode on your tab in order to flash things like official ROM packages (typically in tar.md5 format).
If you want to flash the ROM in zip format, you can do that in recovery. In general, if you have problems doing that, your other option is Odin and a stock ROM; then you can start over.
Looking closely at your photo, you have a stock recovery. You can only flash signed zips from it, which means you won't be able to flash custom ROMs or kernels. I would suggest to start with flashing a custom recovery (look up PhilZ Touch CWM, it's the best). This will make things easier for you.
P.S.: Sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh... It seems things got a bit confusing in the process, so questions and answers didn't really line up...
well ....I have been doin a lot of research, maybe too much lol....but the only thing I can get outta all of it is that to flash a kernel or rom or both I need to go into recovery(power and up volume) and do a wipe of the cashe and install.....then it seems to trail off there with a ok now your done go enjoy....
I cant seem to find any kinda description of what happens in between the wiping of the cashe/devlick and the install...I keep ending up in the recovey section wheather I use rom manager rom toolbox or just me following directions. I will say this though.....I do not see the cwm logo in the recovery....I stiil have the android and he lays there dead then does a quick flash to an error message then I get the menu....but there is no "mount and storage" and "backup and restore" option for me to choose from I put the tab into recovery mode and took a picture....its in the previous post.
I am still using the stock rom and kernel btw....Im not sure if I have mentioned that. I havnt been able to flash anything.

Yeah, I got that. Sorry for the confusion! I updated my previous post, take a look. Stock recovery seems to be your problem here.
No harm done lol I appreciate all the help.....I'm a bit new at this, but I learn quick. Ok....I may be putting CWM or pfilze wrong way on my tab I loaded it from the play store, along but when I rooted tab I'm 99% positive that I installed CWM also . when I plug it into the computer I can see a clockwork folder.do I neeed to use odin to install philz?
is there a specific PhilZ Touch for the tab 2? or can I just download it to the computer and send it to my tab via odin?

Not sure exactly what and how you did previously, but the fact is that you've got a stock recovery now. You need a custom recovery - it doesn't have to be PhilZ, even though I strongly recommend it. You can install standard CWM, too, no problem with that. To install PhilZ, you either need CWM to be already installed, or you need to use Odin.
For details and install instructions on PhilZ CWM, look here:

Oh, BTW, as an alternative to Odin, look up the Mobile Odin by Chainfire on Play Store. It allows you to flash Odin packages from your device directly. Very useful tool! Free version will do, but the paid one has more features.

Yes, there is. Look in the thread I linked above.
Yep.....i got it stuck in forever boot using mobile odin.... Uugggh....I'm gonna return everything to stock and re-root it.....what ever I did the first time rooting and installing cwm I must a missed a step or something. I'll repost my progress when I'm back to stock and rooted properly
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!
YAY!!! Merry Christmas to me!!! I unrooted and repaired my tab 2 7.0 . I also re-rooted it and installed philztouch and everything is installed properly this time. Funny thing though.....after I got the tab working and before I re-rooted it...I tried to do the factory update to 4.2.2 ,since now I'm only on 4.1.1,it said that I had the latest updates available and my apps and phone list didn't auto load like when I first got my tab....hhhmmmm...anyways it works now and all root stuff and twrp is properly :highfive::highfive: only one more question...now that TWRP is working....when I want to download a kernel or rom do I leave it in Zipped form when I put it on the tab and the tab unzips it and flashs it or do I unzip it? .....sorry for all the basic questions but ya cant learn unless you ask questions
Thanks for every ones help with my Tab 2!!!

Well, congrats, and merry Christmas! A bit confused - are you using PhilZ CWM, or TWRP?
As for zip files, leave them as they are, don't unzip - the recovery will install them. Just a suggestion - whenever possible, especially for large files like complete ROMs, verify the MD5 checksum to make sure your file is not corrupt during download.
just went into recovery and it says Philz touch 6
