Trade - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

I might trade my Galaxy Nexus for the Q, Is it a nice phone?

I love(d) it. I still have it sitting there in bricked form while I use my 3rd Samsung Epic circa 2010 with CM10.1 circa Dec 2012.
It really was leaps and bounds over the Epic as far as processing power and raw computing. But I dont have LTE in my area yet decent WIMAX coverage so I like using the Epic for 4g. Plus I like the functionality of CyanogenMod over the Moto interface. CM10 is in the works for the Q so I am just waiting for that I guess before I unbrick it. Or LTE coverage. I got the phone for $40 so I'm just letting it sit. Its funny how I will suffer with inferior hardware to use a superior interface, but thats where I am right now.
The Q is easy to brick and the programming is not as friendly, plus its not a widely adopted phone so the development community is going slow. And thats not to say it needs development. Its pretty close to stock Android but Moto limits some niche features that, again, I like having in CM.
That being said, it is the premier QWERTY phone with the premier chipset save for maybe 1 or 2 other phones in existence. Games are great, everything runs great. Everything you would expect from a top tier phone. The unlockable bootloader deal from Moto is great, sorta groundbreaking. If you have LTE go for it. If you run off of WIFI mostly go for it.
My only real complaint about the phone is the internal memory and how they designate their memory, its confusing, and that the internal memory situation is severely lacking; I would run out of space on internal memory and get "low memory" notifications when doing things like streaming amazonmp3.... another reason for cyanogenmod is the reformatting of all the memory so you can run apps off memory card.
Thats just my $.02 fairly big time noob but I can totally root and recovery and add custom roms to my Epic and enjoy its functionality everyday. If you like QWERTY phones which actually can increase efficiency for some brain types then its the #1 phone to get.

I recently went from the Galaxy Nexus to a Photon Q I bought off craiglist in mint condition for 100 bucks. I've always had a fascination with the droid slider line and wanted to try the photon q. My honest opinion is the only thing I like more about the photon is the reception and build quality and the keyboard is nice for emails but the camera and screen are better on the nexus.

Switched back to the nexus tonight. I missed the nicer screen but mostly being able to ROM of and what not. I'll sell the photon on Craig's or keep it as a spare

Captivate Owners!

I just wanted to know what made you guys buy the captivate? At first I was going to but the Aria but changed my mind at the last minute. I wasn't interested in the captivate because if the size of the phone, but I said "what the heck" and got it to try it. I had intentions on returning it, but as you can tell, it never made it back to the AT&T store....

Besides being an Android phone, screen size was the biggest reason I got it. Phones done good for me.
I dropped my aria two months after I purchased and busted the screen. $250 and a week later, I received my captivate from ebay. Im very glad I got the phone but I miss my stable cyanogenmod the aria had.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I bought it due to fairly good reviews on it and could do lot more than my old winmo phone. It had a great screen size and has high resolution.
I found the hard way that it had lot of delayed updates for it and gps issues as well. I still kept it because its far better than winmo. It was a deal that was hard to beat, for me.

Why? Simple. I waited for nearly two years for AT&T to release an Android phone that wasn't a total piece of crap. This was it. AT&T passed on the G1 and the N1 because they were too busy catering to the iPhone. Like I was really going to buy an HTC Lancaster?
I bought it for its potential. Stock this phone is meh, but with custom ROMs it is a Nexus S that gives up the front camera for an extra micro sd slot.
Sent from my Android using the power of my dreams.
i got it for the screen. at first i got an aria, great little phone, but once att dropped the $100 rebate i made the switch because with 2.1 the aria had too little storage for apps. yeah i went app crazy at first. and without 2.2 i could not do app to sd
also the cost of a large sd card vs the captivate having 14 usable internal + all the other features of the captivate it seemed like a no brainer. after i got the captivate i did have alittle buyers remorse though. the rom was meh. thee update made it better but it wasnt the update we were anticipating and by then i was already using a beta leak and utb.
i miss fm radio, the lazer mouse, the browser(text was always readable) and other things but removing the batery and sd card is a pain in the arse on the aria, and if you do it too many times the cover loosens up and the antennas can get poor reception.
on the captivate i enjoy flashing roms with little fear of bricking with the availability of odin3. the screen of coarse, the headphones, 46 gigs of storage, unbeaten graphics chip so far(hard to believe it holds that title this long) the camera, and the fact that nobody seems to know what the hell it is. but we all know about the gps issues samsungs delayed updates and various incompatabilities with proprietary samsung code like the wii mote app.
Screen size and because I found this phone to be the prettiest of any phone I've seen and android.

the hardware was (is) incredible. turns out the software, not so much .
I have been all over the place with phones had never tried android before never was there a phone worth it on att to get and I didn't feel like getting an unlocked g2. This phone even with its issues is still a good and solid phone. Could use a few things like flash in the camera like its brother has. But the Nice size internal memory almost 16gigs for w.e u want plus a micro SD so your good for as lil a 2 gigs or as much as 32 more which is great. No fear or running out of room. Screen is really good just over all design it grabs a lot of attention
I got it because AT&T only had this or the aria as far as Android devices went at the time. Plus, gorgeous screen, super fast yada yada.. also promise of a update soon.
Starting to regret returning my iPhone 4 sadly.
1. Screen (super-amoled + size + vibrant color)
2. CPU
3. Best GPU performance in smartphone to date. The olympus and some of the coming Tegra 2's might change that.
i had an iphone 3g and was wanting to try something new so i wanted an android was going to get the aria but when captivate came out i bought this instead.
The release of my first choice, a Nokia N8 5 band UMTS world phone, was delayed so I bought the Captivate, my second choice. I almost didn't buy it because of the GPS issue. I like the Android OS and the super AMOLED display. I lucked into making the right choice.
I had the iPhone 3G and then the 3Gs, got burned out on ios, android was the obvious choice and the Captivate had top of the line hardware. GPS works fine, if you really need a reliable GPS then u really should get a standalone GPS device, and for music junkies get a stand alone mp3 player.

I wouldn't say that the GPS works fine. Maybe for you it does, but I don't think it's acceptable for my phone to thing that I'm in Philadelphia or Oakland or even Germany when I'm really in Southern California. There is a major issue with LBS on this phone and I can't wait to get rid of it. IF you don't care about location based services, this is an amazing phone. I love everything else about it.
I bought it for the screen and for Android. I was going to hold out for a bigger screen HTC phone to make its way to AT&T but my old phone died before that happened. I am not currently having the GPS issues. Just waiting for the upgrade to 2.2.
1. The only galaxy s phone on at&t .
2. The only phone with mkv and h264 high profile playback .
Extra reason 16gb internal plus can add 32gb micro sdcard which I did 48gb media awesomeness *drool*
I had an aria but i just had this feeling that i was going to regret it in two years, so i traded for the next up

[Q] Infuse or Atrix

I am upgrading to a smartphone and really have no idea about anything... I am fairly tech savy with computers so I figured it was high time but after spending over 4 hours on anandtech comparing benchs and roaming the various sites I still feel like I don't know anything about smartphones...
At the moment I am hellbent on sticking with AT&T because I get a huge discount through my work (Grandfathered into unlimited data etc.)...
What I understand is that the Galaxy S2 or whatever is by far the best phone but it is also very expensive atm (800 dollars?) in U.S. and is not yet mainstream, so I can't spend that kind of money. I need my phone by sunday for work (job change), so I think the Atrix and Infuse are the two best 4G phones from AT&T...
Atrix has the dual core so it basically runs a little faster, smaller screen, matrix screen etc. etc.
Infuse is larger, maybe slightly longer(?) battery life due to single core, has a superior screen and is rootable/unlockable or something due to the bootloader(?)
Being a tech junkie I crave speed and hate waiting for anything so the atrix loads web pages and programs faster so that seems appetizing at first. This has to be weighed against the "custom goodies" you can get with the infuse.
So basically please help, I have no idea what a locked bootloader means, why it is bad that the atrix has that, and what the "custom goodies" that come from having a rootable(?) phone are for the Infuse. My understanding is that the Infuse is more customizable (how exactly?). Really my understanding between these two phones is that besides the superior sound and video quality from the infuse (bigger size too) is that the atrix is faster and that has to be weighed against how customizable the infuse is. Sorry for the vague questions but I don't really know much, I realize I am posting on the infuse boards so the responses might be somewhat bias.
Sorry if this is the wrong place this is my first post and first quest into the world of smartphones...
Simple - Motoblur is a steaming turd that slows down phones and eats battery, and the locked bootloader of Motorola devices means that you are stuck with whatever turd Moto gives you. A lot of people felt that even the (slightly weaker than the Infuse) HTC Inspire was faster in actual usability for most tasks than the Atrix due to the crappiness of Motoblur.
With an unlocked bootloader, you aren't stuck with carrier bloatware and can nuke it. For now, an unlocked bootloader means only that we have de-bloated and tweaked variants of the stock ROM, however down the line, we can expect:
1) If another carrier (such as Rogers) releases an update AT&T doesn't, it can be used as a base for ROMs for our AT&T phones. Example - it's rumored the Canadians will get Gingerbread for the Infuse first.
2) Eventually with Infuses in the right dev's hands, we'll see AOSP or the Cyanogenmod source tree targeted at our device. Once that's the case, we'll likely track the latest and greatest Android versions with little delay.
You will never see either of 1 or 2 with an Atrix.
Also if you search the threads you will see a lot of people who came from the atrix and say this is not only a better phone, but faster
I dunno guys - it's looking more and more like the next Atrix OTA is going to have a bootloader unlock and if that really happens then I'm really going to regret leaving the Atrix behind for the Infuse.
Both are great devices. To make your decision ask yourself one question: What is more important to me? A device that works or a device I can customize to the max.
I think that'll help you make a firm decision.
I had the Atrix for almost 30 days. I rooted it on day 1. I loved the long lasting battery cause I use the hell out of my phone. That battery would easily last me a full day! From 8:15 am till around 20% left before I went to bed at 2 am lol the phone would lag once in a while though and people had a hard time hearing me when I spoke on the phone. So I returned it.
The Infuse is sweet so far! Also rooted on day 1. Just wish it had a battery similar to the Atrix and a dual core processor. Everything else is great as is!

From what I've read, the infuse is actually faster than the atrix. Even though the infuse has a 1.2 GHz single core and the atrix a 1GHz running at 2 cores, the infuse is faster since android is only being loaded on a single core for the atrix and to my knowledge, there arent any apps on the market that are able to multi-thread. I may be wrong but that's what I have seen. Also, the hummingbird processor on the infuse can decode(and hopefully encode with the gingerbread update) full HD faster than the atrix's tegra. I have also read that the atrix has some problems with overheating but I may be wrong. The infuse is a pretty good phone, granted the Touch Wiz UI is not as friendly as Sense UI, it is a hella lot better than Motoblur. For the battery life, the infuse is very good and lasting, i don't know about the atrix though. The screen on the infuse is just killer and has AMAZING colors, its basically a pocketable 4.5 inch 1080p HDTV, while the atrix is a smaller sceen(4 inch) phone with qHD display. I believe the infuse's screen is better though because its a SAMOLED(super active matrix organic light emiting diode) screen which eliminates some screen filters that normal LEDs, LCDs and TFTs have, making the colors wonderful. The atrix's qHD display does have 24bit color but i think that it comes short to the infuse. Hope you choose the infuse though. The possible gingerbread update will make it far more superior to most known phones. You wouldn't have buyers remorse
Hopefully I can help a little as I currently use "both" devices. They each have their pros and cons and it really tailors to what you "need" in a smartphone.
Keep in mind I am going from my perspective as a power user, display is off and phone not running some sort of app in the course of 12 hours for maybe 2 hours total.
The atrix succeeds in battery life, 7am to 7pm I still hold about 15-20%, infuse is being charged at that time, actually usually an hour before.
Atrix has better gps lock speed, I definitely rely on it more for road trips, although I have an issue where the gps and google nav use more power that what my cla replenishes "look into it if this is important to you"
Screen goes to the infuse hands down, people say oh qHD is more this and that, Super amoled plus is more this and that, well guess what. When I look at my infuse and turn on a video, I feel like im looking through a window into a little 4.5in world, its amazing
Considering almost ALL of us root, change, configure and who knows what else to personal our device I wouldn't listen to all the motoblur sucks, sense suck, tw sucks folks out there. Both of my phones look exactly the same and although the atrix should be faster the only time I see it win is when loading certain apps, other than that they are damn close so if phone speed is a concern, you can enjoy either one.
The Atrix is definitely LOUDER!! I tend to miss calls here and there with my infuse in the pocket and im outside, never miss a beat with the atrix, wtg moto. Reminds me of the old loud razor.
Screen real estate was a must for me for editing files so that was my win for the infuse, I love the large responsive display. It may only be .5 in but it makes a difference trust me
All in all they are both great devices and worthy of use. The atrix definitely wins in the poweruser world for its trusty gps, louder ringer (people don't like if you miss their call ) and longer battery life
for the entertainment or social user I would say infuse all the way, much much much better camera, larger display, more crisp, light, great size for web browsing, social networking, or just about anything. It has some things it lacks as mentioned but if those are not deal breakers than the infuse is definitely more FUN to own.
PS: They both run games exceptionally well and I have yet to see a hiccup during gameplay that actually affected me while playing.
Well, the Atrix bootloader was unlocked last night. So, we now have Gingerbread on our phones!
Infuse has
Better camera than the Atrix
far better screen
better stock software
Atrix has
better accessories
better feel/build quality
theoretically faster specs (although it doesn't translate to reality at this point)
probably better development now that it's unlocked as well, motorola devices seem to be easier to develop for than Samsung ?

I disagree on that - if the stock UI sucks and the manufacturer has gone through measures to make you unable to change it, then it's a severe liability.
Motoblur sucks and on most Motorola phones, you have no choice. Apparently that may be changing/have changed as of last night for the Atrix, but I still don't trust Motorola. The arrogance of some of the things they've said to the public is inexcusable.

my time without the G2x.....

My main phone, I had to switch to my backup G2 for the next few months. I can't go back my g2x for the time being, its complicated to explain.
Its now 2 weeks since the switch and I miss my G2x, just snappier, faster, and just better overall device. Turns out some of the things I complained about followed me on the G2. Its the email syncs I always complain about. Its a CM7 issue and I believe the memory gets so used up by my other apps that the android email just crashes. Saw the same symptoms on my G2. Maybe its the 500mb of ram. Owned a mytouch 4g and didn't have that, but I digress.
The things I miss:
The big screen. 3.7 inches isn't enough for my fat fingers. I make so many mistakes.
The snalpier a.d faster reaction. Of course
better reception and signal. It handles 4g signal better
Physical keyboards just overrated.
The only thing that does surprise me is just how well the G2 holds its charge. Moderate use and lots of texting, I really survive 8 plus hours on the G2. And still have juice left like 45%
I wanna go back to G2x but now its my media device at home while the G2 serves as my main phone. It just handles better.
Just wanted to share my thoughts. I miss this phone as my main device.

Wait for something else. GN gpu is bad. I would wait for the Galaxy S2 HD version to come to the states (or get it from outside of the states).
Please think about the T-Mobile GS2. It rocks my socks. Biggest screen you could want without being obnoxious, and also a pretty nice dev community, especially with ICS coming.

Agreed. GNex is a great phone but SGSII is planning to habitually refresh their product line. Attention to consumers gets major brownie points in my book.

[Q] Photon Q the better choice?

I told myself if the iphone 5 wasn't jailbroken by this year I was switching back to Android, but the problem now is that I'm on Sprint. Which to my knowledge doesn't have too many viable options. ( I strongly dislike the S3 because of it's crappy screen being easily broken). I had the original Droid, but it was for Verizon and I'm pretty sure I can't put a Droid 4 or my own on Sprint now. I've read this Photon Q 4G is the equivalent or better than the Droid 4, but I want to be sure I'm making a good decision with this. I like the QWERTY keyboard for things like emulators being played easily and stuff, but if it's low end then I would be welcome to other suggestions.
Can't speak to the Droid 4 as I've never seen or used that phone. Not to open an iOS vs Android debate... but i'd sooner have Richard Simmons give me a Tabasco enema then own an iPhone. If you want an iPhone, get an iPhone.
The Q has a great keyboard, nice display, and SnapDragon s4 1.5ghz dual core with 1GB of RAM. There is no lag with switching apps and mine has really good battery life. It does not have a huge dev community like some other phones, but the stock rom has very little wrong with it, and you can get a good deal through BestBuy or Costco. I love the Android OS and admittedly am a huge fan boy. There is nothing wrong with ios if you don't care about the phone being stuck "as is."
Just my thoughts.
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
The Droid 4 is a glorified Droid 3 with LTE... It uses year and a half old hardware.
The Q uses the brand new Snapdragon S4 chip, while the Droid 4 is using an aged OMAP 4. The performance differences are night and day. I'd say it is a similar difference as going from Tegra 2 to Tegra 3, and the S4 > Tegra 3.
I don't really understand your comment about the GS3 having an easily broken screen, though. I had one for a good 3 months and wasn't too careful with it (dropped a good amount of times), but it never got more than a bump in the casing. It's a very capable phone.
As for iPhone/Photon Q debate. I'm major anti-Apple (have owned countless iPods in the past, but nothing more) and recommend almost everyone who comes to me to get an Android phone. I point older folk, less tech-savvy people, or hipsters to iPhones.
Thank you both for the reply, but I think you misunderstood my first post. (or I didn't word it right). Anyway, I already own the i5, but because it isn't jailbroken decided to go back to Android. The only thing I needed to know was about the Photon Q 4G. I love Android because I feel in complete control no matter what, but with an iphone I know I'm always limited. I don't hate or love one more than the other (yet), but I've been reading the Q runs on equal terms with the GS3 and such as well. With a low dev community that's a medium sized let down, but do they at least have custom kernels to change the look and theme of the phone like the old Droid had?
The dev support on the Photon Q right now is a bit of a letdown if you come from another platform that had/has very active development.
I came from the Epic and that's the exact case. Going from having lists of ROMs, kernels, tweaks, hacks, and mods to almost nothing does make you feel like you're "losing" something, but then as you dive in and begin using the Photon Q, you start to understand why.
Straight out of the box, at least for me, the experience is better. It's smoother, quicker, and just all around better than my Epic ever thought of being. Battery life is considerably better. My Epic was custom kernel'd, overclock/undervolt and had what I thought to be pretty good battery life, but I still carried a spare battery in my pocket for those heavy use days. Seeing that the Photon Q had a non-removable battery concerned me, but the battery life is so much better it hasn't been an issue, and we all know how it is when you have a new platform, you can hardly put it down so all the days have been heavy use days and I haven't once thought "dang, wish I had a charged battery in my pocket I could swap".
Your last statement is a little off... There are to my knowledge two custom kernels for the Photon Q, however a kernel has little to nothing to do with customizing the theme/look/feel. Just skimming the custom kernel threads it doesn't seem as though they have all the wrinkles ironed out on them yet, so I'm still on the stock kernel because honestly I just don't feel a real need to change.
There are a few simply UI mods out there right now, but nothing yet in the realm of a full on theme.
There's a few little things here and there about the Photon Q I personally don't like, but it's mainly just visual stuff like the turquoise percent bars and overscroll, full charge notification/popup, etc.
All in all, it's the best phone out of the box I've had. I'm usually VERY mod happy, but this one really is done almost 100% right stock.
If you got this phone, I highly doubt you'd regret it. Especially coming from an iPhone 5.
Thread moved. Please post questions here in Q&A in future.
Thanks

[Q] Gah; Handset Insanity! Help me choose my next phone

I know that you guys probably see dozens of these kinds of threads from confused geeks like me who just can't make up their minds, but I'm really stuck here. I've been up for hours reading about all of the handsets on the market right now and I just can't settle on one option that I like the best for my situation. I'm hoping that some of the more experienced users can help me out on this.
For context, I've been using an HTC Desire for the past two years no problem. I love the phone, but it is showing it's age and the internal memory is an issue. So I would like to get a new one, that can last me at the very least two more years. My budget is around 600 dollars.
I live in Canada, so the situation with carriers is pretty bad. I'm currently on Telus (HSPA+) and would prefer to own my phone so that I can bypass this whole contract crap and negotiate better prices for my monthly bills.
Anyways, boiled down, this is what I'm looking for:
Compatible with Telus HSPA+ Network (Rogers is a plus)
Either a MicroSD slot or 32+ onboard storage
At least 24 hours of battery life on a single charge
Decent performance, don't really play games but would like a lag free interface
Healthy hacking community
Good build quality and durability. It should be able to take a fall
Flash camera. Camera quality is a negligible factor but I use the flashlight every day.
Out of all of the devices I've seen thus far, I'm leaning most towards the OneX+. But I've also looked at the Galaxy Nexus and liked it as well. There is also the SGS3 but I think that phone is really ugly and don't really like it. Choices... choices... can I hear a voice of reason here?
What do you think about a Motorola Atrix 4G. It have a dual-core CPU (1Ghz), 16Go of internal memory + MicroSD slot up to 32Go. HSPA+ compatible, a great assembly quality with Kevlar. A high-capacity battery (more than one day of autonomy). A good healthed developers community.
I think it's the best phone for your requirements. It's not the all brand new smartphone, but you'll keep it for a longtime if you take care of it
GoL LuM
PS: I forgot to say it have two very powerful LEDs flash (more powerful than Galaxy S2 flash)
Sorry for my bad english

I hadn't though of that one actually. From the looks of it, everything that I want is there. However, from the development pages, it looks like Motorola is being quite active in suppressing the hacking community, especially by not providing them graphics drivers which leads to numerous bugs in ICS and JB. That might be a deal breaker for me unless an Atrix4G owner can weigh in and clear my suspicions.
Note 2 if that isn't too big for u! Idk y u don't like s3 but 20million + people who bought it can't go wrong! and u oughtta sacrifice somethin to gain somethin! Just sayin. Ur wish! And BTW one x + is great. Isn't nexus4 there? Cuz nexus is already too old!
Ps - and don't ever think of buying moto. I myself own an atrix2. They r too unresponsive / ignorant about their customers. Worst OEM ever. And they have everything locked down (bootloader), so not really much of development!

The Note2 is far to big for my tiny hands, haha. The reason I don't like the S3 is because of the garish chamfered edges and the design that basically screams "no we aren't copying apple" while not offering any real inspired design. It's just too unrelentingly samsung. While Moto might be the worst OEM, I think samsung is pretty close.
Nexus 4 is out of the question because of it's pathetic amount of internal storage and no MicroSD slot. Also it is basically a glass enclosed phone so it won't have the durability of something like the one x+.
Honestly, I think I am going to go with the One X+ because it seems that it has the best internal battery, great specs, though I will probably hobble it a bit for extra battery life with a more efficient kernel. Also it seems that it could survive re-entry into the atmosphere with that fused ceramic/metal enclosure.
Then again... I might just go with the S3. I mean it is butt ugly but it has everything that I want in a phone. MicroSD, removable battery, nice screen, hacking community... damn. It's really not making it easy on my that the phone costs 150 dollars less than the OneX+. Plus the button is on the side as opposed to the top, which is nice.
