[Q] N00b seeking suggestion and answers - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a galaxy s3 Verizon, unrooted. I’m looking to root this device and install a rom. I have rooted android devices before (thunderbolt, tablet) just to gain super user powers for particular apps. I've not installed ROMs, launchers, themes etc. Can someone explain to me the difference between the three?
I would like some suggestions on which to use. I'm looking for a rom that looks sleek (somewhat futuristic, compared to stock JB), gives me customization abilities such as the notification bar widgets, lock screen, etc. I want to be able to remove some bloat ware, I want one that is stable, runs smooth, and gets good 4g. What’s the difference between TW, ASOP, etc?
Do I need to do titanium backup? Will it save all my apps and the data associated with them? Can I use Titanium backup to restore my apps to their previous state after flashing a rom? Do I lose everything when I flash a rom or launcher? What do I use to flash back to stock JB if needed?
I’m not looking for step by step guide, just some answers and suggestions.
Thanks

1.TW is Samsung's ui while AOSP is Android before Samsung messed with it.
2. You don't have to use titanium backup if you don't want to as there is a simpler alternative called Super Backup.
3. You don't flash launchers .
4. When flashing ROMs you only lose apps not data.
5. The stock ROMs are in the android development section.
6. Suggestions for ROMs are based on biases so it is best that you check the ROMs yourself. Whatever ROMs work for others might not work for you.

what kind of rom would you suggest I try first? TW or AOSP? would super backup restore all my apps after flashing a rom? Thanks for all your help!

Most of the AOSP 4.2 ROMs are in beta stages so I would advise you to hold out until they are in the final stages. So the TW ROMs and the stable 4.1 AOSP ROMs are the way to go for now. Super Backup does restore and backup apps.

what the difference between a rom and kernal. Are kernals aosp & tw or roms? Sorry for all the n00b questions.

Kernels are not ROMs. In real world terms the kernel serves as a translator for your phone's hardware and software to communicate with each other. ROMs are customized versions of Android.

I still suggest Titanium Back up if you want to invest in the pro key the features are a lot better. If you turn into a flashaholic like myself then nothing beats restoring your system to the same way before the flash with one click. but the market has multiple backup apps and i know different people like different apps but TB with pro key I think seems to be the fastest with the most features.

[Q] Official Rom VS CM Rom?

Hi, I have a question. I want to know which one is better. Official rom or Cm10 rom ?
isn't any body to help me?
That depends on how you use your tablet. For most uses the stock ROM is what you want. It generally offers a more stable experience, but some of the extra features of Cyanogen may make it worth it.
One of the main reasons I use Cyanogen is to have a mostly AOSP system and remove manufacturer skins like Sense and TouchWiz. On the TF300 this isn't much of an issue as it's 90% vanilla android anyway. ASUS added a custom notification menu (that can be disabled to use the standard Android tablet menu), a custom control panel ("ASUS Customized Settings"), and several apps. Not much else.
CM10 also has a number of added features. A fairly big one is the theme manager which lets you skin the device, and there's a large number of added settings for customization. It also gives you root access and allows for overclocking, which are common features power users may want.
The best advice I can give: If you want the device to "just work", stick with stock. If the added CM10 features are enough to make you want to switch, give it a try. Just know that there's a lot of reading you need to do to install it without bricking your device.
Note that on the TF300 you cannot run CM10 if your device already the 4.1 Jellybean update. Also note that, if you're running ICS, you must unlock the device to install CM10, which voids your warranty and may not be something you really want to do.

As timothyb89 mentioned - If you updated to Asus official JB you can't have CM10, not yet - but xplowild is working on it, give it some time.
Installed OC Rom last night and was really satisfied with it, so I can strongly recommend that for you, if you are on JB bootloader.
In my opinion a Custom ROM is much smoother and faster than the stock rom, and the extra features is always a bonus

thanks, so what about another custom rom? such as blackbean?
Blackbean is one choice. Though it's appears to be based on CM so it probably won't run on the Jellybean bootloader quite yet.
A quick list of stock-based ROMs you could use arranged roughly in order of their popularity:
Hydro (Jellybean)
CleanROM - this is what I'm running right now
[email protected]
The Ultra Fast ROM
I personally like CleanROM as it seems to be more stable than the others I tried (mainly stock and Hydro). I had serious issues with random reboots, freezing, and WiFi death, and for the most part those are resolved in CleanROM. Your mileage may vary.
i installed clean rom, so can i i install cm10 rom?

Which is best /stable ROM for explorer.

Hi ,
Please provide me the best ROM for HTC Explorer with a procedure to how to install it.
Also tell me how i can take backup of this official ROM so that i can further recover this ROM whenever i want.
I have rooted my newly Explorer but when i move applications to SD card , it moves but still it takes little internal memory so please give me that Rom which should keep everything on SD card.
Also i have heard that RAM can be increase using custom ROM.
So please provide me the that ROM which do the above thing
Thanks
Check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999273 this kind of questions are kinda rood cos guys develop roms in there own time for us with pretty much nothing getting back to them, so check oust roms changelogs and make your choice
If you want a rom which is just like stock rom in looks but is way better in performance you should usr Nextgen 1.5 rom. It already had m2sd so you can install apps to an ext partition on your sdcard. Follow the instructions in the first post of the thread and there is even an installation
instr. video at the end of the third post.
If you want to backup your current rom then go to recovery and select backup & restore then backup.
Sent from my HTC Explorer powered by Nextgen v1.5

It is not in the slightest bit rude (which is what I assume you meant by "rood") to ask which ROMs are stable. Rude would be saying "Rom X is rubbish, the developer is an idiot" or something like that. Asking which ROMs are stable is a perfectly acceptable (and very sensible) thing to do. You shouldn't have to install dozens of different ROMs only to find bugs which render your phone unusable, just to "be polite". That is a completely ridiculous notion.
To the OP: I haven't (yet) tried any of the custom ROMs, but I hear many good things about the stock CM builds (there are builds of CM9.1 [ICS] and CM10 [JB]; I believe the builds of CM10 are slightly less stable than the CM9.1 builds, which are pretty much completely stable from what I can gather). Most other ROMs on the forums are built off one of those ROMs, and so should be about as stable as the base ROM, but they could be based on older builds, which were less stable. So your mileage may vary with the other ROMs.
If you want a stable custom ROM, I'd say you should probably go for CM9.1. I personally intend to install either it or CM10 in the near future.

[Q] Suggested must have tweaks/apps/mods/tutorials...

I am new to custom roms and find myself totally indulged in this science.
So currently im running the i535 vzn on clean rom 5.6, lk 3.0.57, and vrblk.
I am looking for suggestions on what others see as must have tweaks/mods/apps. The only things I have seen thus far are rom toolbox, goo manager, pimp my rom, titanium backup, twrp, super su, better battery stats...I have been dibble dabbling around forums the past couple months but am looking for some direction in this new interest.

You don't have to worry about the tweaks and mods as those are usually included in the ROM. Some Devs even give you links to mods that work on their ROMs but didn't include them in the build. As for apps my must have app is DS Battery Saver.
thanks for the reply, everything helps

SOOO lost -total N00B

Hello everyone,
Ive spend the last hour or so trying to find a basic step by step for me here, but so far nothing I can understand- Please pardon my ignorance...
Ok-
I have a fully STOCK galaxy tab 2 7.0 Plus:
-GT-P6210 (US model)
-4.0.4
-Kernel: 3.0.15
-Build: IMM76D.UELPC
I would like to get 4.1-4.2 running on here, but ideally- 4.1/2 running a stock(nexus like) ROM. I am def. not a fan of Samsungs interface as time has gone by, but seem to favor the nexus's (unless there is better?) . I know I need to root the device, and I am fine with that, along with all the risks that go with this (I killed a atrix a few years ago).
So, if someone could direct me to the proper link(s), or if your willing to help me a little (we can work something out PP/BTC) Id greatly appreciate it!
I have the ability, just have 0 teacher to show me the way. From what I understand some of the ROMs available here are great, and id really like to learn. I am a hardware guy for a living, swimming in this world of software is daunting at times...
There is no such thing as a Google / Nexus style ROM for this device. there are variants of CM 10 but that is custom CM, not Nexus UI.
In fact there is no such thing as a pure Google version of Android for any device. Google does not supply the kernel and device drivers so Google Android from Google source runs on none, nada, zero, devices out of the box. Each hardware vendor takes the base Android and adds their own parts to the kernel, adds device drivers and in Samsungs case some additional UI and frame work features (Touchwiz).
The CM 10 JB variants work ok, but some hardware features like the IR blaster will not work on those since the HW is Samsung specific. A better experience if you don;t like the TW launcher might be to install the stock Samsung JB 4.1.2 ROM and then install one of the nice third party launchers on the market to get a different UI look. The launcher is really the major visible difference between Nexus UI and Samsung. Apex, Nova, and Holo are 3 launchers that work well.

Hello, and thank you for you reply!
That makes sense, regarding the Nexus/android ROM- again, please pardon my ignorance...
As for the IR blaster, i am not too concerned about loosing that function. I never really use it, and its never worked great anyway...
Id like to try a stock samsung 4.1/4.2 ROM, and try a 3rd party launcher, or even give the CM10 a go if the stock rom doesnt work. It is my understanding I will have to root the device before I can proceed anywhere. Is this a hard to do process, or pretty simple now a day (I would imagine)?
I again thank you for your help!

You can install JB without rooting , right over ICS. Using ODIN.
If you want to customize, Rooting is the starting point. Root and install a recovery module , CWMR or TWRP. Haven't had to install root in a few months, I'll have to look at the current threads to give you a recommendation on that.
One caution, install JB or install the custom recovery and root before you wipe anything on the ICS ROM . Samsung had a bug in the system wipe routine that can cause permanent damage to the memory. It is fixed in JB ROMs and also in the custom recovery software. Just be sure not to do a factory reset on ICS.
Here is a link to the Samsung JB 4.1.2 for P6210. Using ODIN you install this over your current Samsung ICS ROM. (NOTE: the only 4.1.2 P6210 Samsung release so far is a UK ROM and some people have reported Wifi issues due to this, but I run this one and have encountered no issues at all. )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2278740
This appears to be the latest instruction for rooting JB.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41800762&postcount=216
Once you perform the above, you can return to stock Samsung ICS later if you want, but that would most likely return you to factory stock and wipe your programs and settings, so be sure you know the consequences before you jump.

I have one final question for you, or anyone out there running this same JB/ODIN process...
Will this, and if so how much, bog the performance of the tab itself? I notice that the tab even with ICS tends to be a little "jerky" going from menu to menu, etc... Is this because of my hardware, or lack of the "project butter" being part of the OS? (I think that was part of JB?)
If I were to have the wifi issues, would I be able to flash back?
Other than that, i am ready to hit the "Go" button!

Why would this bog down the tablet?. JB is much smoother than ICS. That was one of Goggles goals in JB. However, some people expect PS4 like performance ..... ha...., all of these phones/tablets use cheap / low power processors. You get what you get, That being said, I am very happy with my P6210 on JB
You can always use ODIN to go back, but you will lose all your settings and installed apps when you do that.
The Wifi issues I have seen reported seem to be that some US Wifi channels do not show up. Not surprising, there are differences in the UK spectrum.

More just a thought about the S/W being much newer than the hardware. I most certainly do not expect superformance out the device, but more or less was making sure the hardware is up to the task. Would you rec. I do a backup of the system past the basic "app back n restore" app?

When you install the JB over the Samsung ICS, your settings and apps should be retained. For all brands and ROM, You can backup and restore apps with something like Titanium Backup if you are rooted, but you should not restore data between ICS and JB using most backup apps. the storage areas are different and doing so will cause bad things to happen.

Done n Done with success!
As you stated, everything held perfect and no issues on the wifi side of things. This OS really made a good difference on the tab as a whole, feels more complete.
I thank you again for all your help!!!!!!!!
What would be a reason to "root" this tablet other than being able to run custom ROMs and maybe be able to off load some bloatware? I feel like I am missing out on what is possible with android and really should get on the bandwagon.

For this tablet I don't feel that any of the current custom ROMs offer any advantages or features over the stock setup. I keep it rooted in case I want to drop in a custom startup screen or backup things. Other than that, there is really no good reason to root for the tablet.
Hopefully some of the developers will update to JB and add some of the Note 2 or S4 features soon though.

What is the best overall custom ROM?

I've tried many custom ROMs and keep switching, so I'd like to ask everyone which is the best for everyday use and why so?

Every person is going to give you a different answer. Different users use different features....you have to evaluate what is the perfect rom for you. The best way to do this is to take a current TWRP backup and try a few. You can always restore your backup. Be aware the marshmallow ones all have significantly shorter screen on time than the 5.0.2 or cm12.1 did but of course have the latest features (and eliminate the lag the stock 5.0.2 had).
I personally stuck with the original marshmallow rom...it's been tested the most (by alcatel) and anytime you start cramming in parts of other roms to "customize" it you increase the chance of bugs.
