I found that Volume rocker wake worked on ICS perfectly when Generic.kl was edited in system/usr/keylayout.
However, in Jellybean, editing it functions erratically. Volume rocker does not work in deep sleep.
Motorola provided a neat little function in build.prop for this.
Open up your build.prop. You'll find this Wake on vol line persist.mot.volumekey.wakeup=0. Change that to 1 and volume rocker Wake is enabled.
Now, you've to add WAKE after Volume_UP and Volume_DN in the files
Generic.kl,evfwd.kl and omap4keyboard.kl located in System/usr/keylayout

In ICS, you only have to add WAKE after the Volume_up(key 115) and Volume_down (key 114) in Generic.kl, as shown in the pic. Leave a couple of spaces, and make sure your keyboard doesn't automatically add a full stop. WAKE should be written, in caps, as specified. Also, check the permissions of the file after saving. They should be rw-r-r (6 4 4).

You need to remove two lines from android.policy jar and then edit the Generic.kl file and add WAKE_DROPPED after Volume up and down for this to work..
If you are fine with recompiling and decompiling i can help you out..

Please note there is a secret menu called "Lab Menu for internal use only" which can be accessed by keying in the following in your dialler
*#*#6686#*#* & here it is simply a matter of selecting "Wake up phone via volume up/down option and rebooting. Confirmed works on JB 4.1.2 official leak 1. There is also an option for 'Host File Configuration".
Please hit thanks button if this helps you.

You must've messed up your build.prop somehow. I hope you had made a cwm backup. Try the new method described by rad7.

I don't intend to go back to ICS, if you are on ICS you can check it yourself, i don't think it will cause issues.

No, on ics I am not aware of similar menu key sequence. I am suprised that it doesn't work on ICS as it is a phone based menu.

DISCLAMER
This theme is in no way complete and I can not give any ETA's as when it will be or if it ever will be because of my busy schedule with life and work, but I will try if there is enough interest. FYI, I am fully aware that the dialer and contacts needs some work, Please enjoy the rest.
LockScreen
You will only get the aosp locksreen if you install a rom with it included such as GummyGB. You also need to check glass lock in display settings to get the aosp dialer lock slider to answer calls.
Install Instructions
This is a Metamorph theme, but I recommend using ZipThemer from the market to apply it.
Just move the zip to your sdcard/zipthemer folder then open Zipthemer
You will have to update ZipThemer to work with Edify Scripting (heres how to do it)
Select Menu then Update Edify from within ZipThemer, then select BROWSE and choose any zip off your sd card that is known to work with edify scripting, then select CONFIGURE. Now, you will be able to continue on to the next steps and ZipThemer will work.
From there select +theme, and choose my zip, then choose *output and name it whatever you like.
Next, select Build it, and choose to make a backup (it will ask you) that way if you don't like it you can easily flash back to what you had before installing.
Finally boot into CWR, and choose the zip you just made and flash then reboot.
I am currently using this on GummyGB v1.8, It should work for "almost" any rom, the good thing is if it doesn't look how you expected all you have to do is boot back into CWR and flash the Undo file you made in ZipThemer and your good to go.
I don't think ZipThemer has been given enough credit, but it allows you to try this theme on any rom and flash back using the undo feature without any negative effects. For Ex. When I was building this I caused my phone to bootloop, I just flashed the undo zip and I was back up and running.
If you do try this on another rom and you are not happy with the results, you can also go into the zip file you got from here and change the .pngs and .jpgs as you like. (Be carefull Changing .9.pngs unless you know what you are doing) then rerun it though ZipThemer and see If you fixed your problem.
EXTRA NOTES: Because this is a ZipThemer Theme then if your Rom (ex. GummyGB 1.8) gets updated to say, 1.9 then all you have to do is apply the rom update then run ZipThemer again and apply, Then this theme will essentially be ported to the new update.

Uhh it doesn't work at all. Zipthemer uses the wrong scripting. I get the message:
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported. Amen scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5. No Problem, I hope you like the fact that if your rom is updated you can still use this theme, all you have to do is flash the rom, then re-run this file through ZipThemer, and essentially you just ported this theme to the new build. I know I mentioned this in the OP but how many people actually read the whole thing,

hehe I did! I always read the entire OP on themes and roms so I know what may or may not work
Also I just played around with ZipThemer a bit and if you go to Setings -> Update Script Format and select the Incredible it works with our phones as the Incredible uses the same scripting style. May have to update the phone database first by going to Update Edify -> Download

Yes just flash over, of course there may be a few icons left over from your old theme. If u can figure out what needs ti be changed just unzip the chargredV1.zip and replace and/or add what you need then rezip with 7zip (storage mode) and run it back through zipthemer to see your changes. The undo zip you make will have your old theme on it so u can easily get back to your old theme by flashing the undo zip. Hope that helps and not to confusing.

Hi!, I just noticed that my phone (or OS) has a built-in screenshot feature. I have UCM GingerBread Rom 2.1 installed with an ICS theme from a russian forum.
When holding the "BACK" soft-key pressed and pressing the "HOME" button, the system is taking a screenshot. Can someone please test and confirm it? maybe i'm wrong, maybe it's a function of an app that is running in background..?
Thank you.

I extracted the files android.policy.jar and framework-res.apk by ROM_GT I9001_UCM_GINGERBREAD_XXKPU_V2 and I simply replaced the files in my rom with rootexplorer.
I received several errors then I restarted the phone and I still found some problems, had changed the background of the theme I use, and no longer had the google account, I restored the background, and account. Now my menu is so ..
.. and everything works perfectly.
Nice one. Will test it ASAP (but 1st i build your counter and maybe (if you like it) a site)

There is absolutely not need to put the points "Recovery" and "Download" into power menu, imho.
One could always reach the Recovery mode by simply reboot with Vol+ button depressed.
And Download point is used soooo rarely, so it's not a problem to boot it with three buttons. But one incorrect movement in power menu - and you are in.

Hi All,
This is mod that will remove the ridiculous "3-dot" menu bar that pops up in fullscreen apps (many games, for instance). It will also remap your soft keys, as follows:
1. The recents key will bring up the relevant context menu with a short/regular press, while a long press of the home key will bring up recent apps.
I will be releasing additional key maps in the future (long press recents for search, keep recents as is with long press for menu, etc.)
This mod is only for deodexed ROMs
Install as follows:
1. Make a NANDROID backup!!
2. Download appropriate zip;
2. Place zip on sdcard;
3. flash as usual in recovery (dalvik and cache wipe recommended);
This mod is based on the work of blubbers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582506), so please go and thank him.
Let me know if I messed anything up, and enjoy..
Steve

How can we implement the menu key longpress (to home or recents) into the stock rom? I want to do this because that 3-dot menu thing is absolutely stupid and annoying.

We can already remap the Menu key to the recent apps button and that does get rid of the 3 dot thing, but we then lose the recent apps functionality. It's a fair trade off I think...for now.

+1. I don't want to deodex my ROM but really, REALLY need the long press home to activate recent apps.
I'd be willing to deodex, if the script was updated for the new 1.82 software ^^

If you want to remove the 3 dots and you have already used this mod, then just go to your build.prop and scroll all the way down and add this line to the bottom of the file:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1

So can I just take these two files and replace the default ones in System/Framework using Root Explorer? I'm not deodexed yet, but I don't know if that is required anymore after looking at the two files.
If you deoxed that is all that you have to do.
Also, this remaps long press menu to search, but you never mentioned it.

I thought deodexing only helped with themeing/customizing (maybe I read a misinformed article)? And doesn't long pressing the menu button bring up recent apps?

I just flashed this. ROM looks amazing Diablo. 2 things...
1- I can't seem to get the Mounts2SD to work. I can not get the button to work. It just sits on the first screen and I touch all over and I have tried flashing it 3 times and still can't get the button to work. I have not tried to re-download yet.
2- Is there a way to change the contacts page to a dark mode? It is white background and a light grey letters and is tough to see.
Other than that I am digging it so far.

I tried downloading 3 times now and flashing each different one. Checked m5sum and it matches. Same problem, it doesn't recognize my root. When I open Terminal it says at the top "void endpwent( ) (3) is not implemented on Android" Next line says "sh-4.1$ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH" Kinda glad to see someone else has the same problem and I'm not going crazy. Love the theme on this one. Let me know if I can give you any more information.
The issue occurs on first boot before I even try to flash mounts2sd. I'm following the instructions word for word. Wiping everything 3x
I have re-flashed everything and tried the mount2sd and still says no root access. I opened up Titanium and it basically says the same thing, but it shows The space used for the system ROM, Internal, SD card and SD card(a2sd). Plus I have a good percentage of the apps I have on my last rom I used in the app drawer.

So let me try to wrap my gead around all this because I'm brand spanking new to this and I've read a lot of threads and I'm still more confused than I originally started. If I root my phone with this method I will be able to have the camera shortcut at the bottom right of my screen? Will anything else be changed? I've read this Knox thing a few timea now and I never use it and my phone doesn't have a warranty so is it a big deal? And from my readings there's this triangle away thing that can reset the Knox value so it technically resets the warranty?

Root allows you to mess with stuff on the phone that is normally off limits to you.
If I root my phone with this method I will be able to have the camera shortcut at the bottom right of my screen?

Since the camera shortcut on the lockscreen is probably just some line that needs to be added to a file, you will be able to get it, but you won't get it just by rooting. You will have to find out how to modify your system files to get the shortcut. I'm pretty sure as soon as the KitKat update rolls out in a region that has the shortcut, there will be tutorials on how to do this.
Will anything else be changed?

You will get the superSU app in your app-drawer which is used to control which apps get access to root functionality (to avoid malicious apps to mess with your phone)
Your KNOX will be tripped. This won't affect the behavior of the phone, as long as you don't plan on using the KNOX application on your Galaxy S4.
(Not sure about this one) Your binary counter will increment by 1, causing your system status to change from "Official" to "Custom", which will disable the automatic updating functionality (via the settings menu) of your device. You can always flash newer system software using ODIN, but you will have to reroot afterwards. It is not recommended to apply OTAs to a modified (i.e. rooted) ROM anyway so this isn't a big deal.
I've read this Knox thing a few timea now and I never use it and my phone doesn't have a warranty so is it a big deal?

If you don't have warranty anyway, its no big deal. Like I said above, the only effect a triggered KNOX flag has, is that you cannot use the KNOX application.
And from my readings there's this triangle away thing that can reset the Knox value so it technically resets the warranty?
Click to collapse
Triangle away resets the binary counter which I mentioned above. This is something entirely different than the KNOX flag. If you flash your system updates with ODIN instead of using OTAs (which I would recommend since OTAs usually don't work properly if you modify your ROM by rooting it) you can ignore the binary counter and thus, don't need to use tools like triangle away.
I would advise you to ask any questions that may remain BEFORE you attempt to mess with your device. Even though the devs (like chainfire) try to rule out every source of misusage, rooting and modifying your device still carries a high risk of turning it into a 600$ paperweight. You should be 100% sure of what you are doing, and try to read up as much as possible on how to do it, and what can happen.
I hope this helps!

Are you saying I might not have to root my phone at all to get this feature? It might just come out on another version on it's own? I'm might be wrong but all i9505 versions with the stock 4.4.2 German has to slide the entire lock screen to the right to access the camer or favourite apps list. I'd be surprised if samsung finally changed how the lock screen worked on the i9505 whwn it's been this way since I first bought the phone last year.
ive read that you can edit a file using an app called root browser that's the only way I know how to get the camera app on the lock screen as it shows as an example on my lock screen settings.

Since the file you will most likely have to edit is a system file, you will need root in order to access it. The system partition is read only, and only root allows you to set it to read/write.
The reason why I mention is that the shortcut seems to exist in the leaks and, if I am not mistaken, a similar difference between regions existed for 4.3 ROMs for the GT-I9505.
Root explorer is a great app. But you will need root in order to leverage its full set of features.
ninja edit: here's a screenshot of the XXUFNAD leak which seems to have the shortcut, so it is there/has been there at some point
ninja edit 2: according to the comments in this article on sammobile, DBT ROMs don't have the camera shortcut.
How important is it to put the CWM on my phone? I read that if I don't intend to use Nand (or something like that) I don't really need it.
Is it possible to pick a different rom and install it to my phone? Or woukd only the DBT german rom work on my i9505? If I can avoid rooting that's what I'd rather do.
Edit l: so upon more research I can install any firmware for 4.4.2 as long as it's for i9505 model. I just need to figure out which one has the camera shortcut icon on the lock screen or wait to sre if DBT will get a fix.
Chainfire has an official thread with his work as well as clear instructions on how to use it. Make sure you're getting permission before uploading someone else's work.
