As to question #1, no, there should be no issues w/ activation. All the buyer has to do is put his or her SIM card in, and the phone should activate as normal. I say this because I purchased a used S3, and that's all I had to do to activate it.
As to your second question, would a factory reset address your concern regarding your information? I would even consider factory resetting both within the OS and in your custom recovery (whether clockwork mod or TWRP), AND re-flashing a zip of your stock image.

[HELP] Unknown IMEI

I know there's another thread of mine with the same problem. But no one has helped me yet. I have a lg optimus one for a long time, I installed cm10.1 about 5-6 months ago, I didnt backup anything when I installed custom rom. I factory reset everything on it so I could give it to someone. But now, when I turn it on, checked the about phone. There is no IMEI. I need help from step to step. I dont wanna brick it. I want it back to stock rom 2.2 froyo. And I have been reading threads about people bricking their phone with kdz(dont know what it is). I'm a newb. I live in U.S

If this mysteriously happened then your SIM card is probably toast. Can you boot into recovery? Have you tried another ROM?
same happend to me, i root the phone and install recovery, an on every single rom i had flashed i didn't had any connection, and there was no IMEI number

If it killed the SIM - try another one - that would quickly prove that theory (although I don't know if I would risk a SIM from an active phone, but if you know anyone who has a phone that died or if you are lucky and can get 10$ SIM cards for pay as you go with no activation fee - it's a cheap way to test and gives you a spare SIM if you ever need it...assuming you have unlocked as well as rooted your phone).
Sounds more like you installed a rom with an incompatible base band if you have no connectivity to your carrier anymore. If you flashed straight to an ICS or JB rom without either upgrading it through the LG app or manually flashing at the time - try it now. (it's not going to hurt it more than it already is, and these phones are tough)
And with my first post I am starting to realize how much I have been digging into what could go wrong so it doesn't go wrong before I tried anything. However if I am wrong, please let me know!!

Good morning XDA Devolopers,
I have used this site for many a year now but today had to sign up to get some help.
I purchased my SM-920F from Ebay, and low and behold, it had been blocked here in the UK, ever the optimist i looked about online and indeed there are several options online, including some services for remote unlocking, i decided it was worth a shot and ordered it, only from there on it goes from bad to worse.
After the unlock i was constantly greeted with Security Errors and Warning, i contacted the company who unlocked it, and was told to re-flash the rom with the same baseband version, after alot of hunting i found a rom from SAM Mobile and away i went, flashed and all seemed to go well i waited and waited, phone stuck on the boot screen. Galaxy S6, powered by Android...
I returned to the unlocking company asking for advice, only to be called a liar and they would never suggest i reflash the rom or firmware.
So now im stuck with a brick, ive tryed all i can think off and all i can research and i just cant make any progress. I did note after the unlock SuperSU had been installed on my phone (i wasnt made aware the unlock required them to root my phone, they tripped knox in the process).
I have a SM-920F origonally on O2 UK, i have tryed flashing there rom with no joy.
Im desperate to have this phone orking, even if its just for calls, my wife is currently at the hospital with our son whos fighting for his life against cancer, and all i get is abuse from here, i dont get paid till the 1st of the month so a new phone is out of the question at present. The unlocking company i used are tools, and to think iw as mighty impressed at the time.
I do have SOME cash, if theres a pro out there who wants to make a few bucks and can remote connect to me to help me solve this it would be much appreciated, i am just now stuck and desperate and badly need the help of the community.
Galaxy S6 920F
64GB Blue
Android 5.1.1
(Rooted by network unlockers)
WIndows 7 Ultimate - Odin (I have just about all of them these days)
Avalable Roms on my Machine (ALL O2 Roms and some other international variants for france and germany)
If anyone out there can help me please, if i could get on my knees and beg i would, im so desperate now to be able to just recieve calls from my wife and the hospital at this **** time for us.
Please please please someone somewhere must be able to help me out
Thanks

Thanks for ya info.
Having installed TWRP i noticed something very intresting, TWRP reports no operating system is installed.
Ive taken a leap of faith and using ODIN am now flashing the Stock 5.1.1 ROM.
Will report back in a few mins.
Okay so TWRP is installed, it reported no operating system.
I reflashed the Stock rom, all went well as expected, phone still refuses to boot.
I have reflashed TWRP and completed a factory reset. Again no dice, still wont boot.
Any further help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

There is a ROM called AllianceROM, I've read that it's on of the best for the G920F.
Okay so as promised.
1. Flash Stock 5.1.1 ROM (Phone will not boot after)
2. Flash TWRP with ODIN
3: Reboot into TWRP and mount filesystem via MPT (i had to disable then enable it for my computer to detect it)
4: Copy ROM to phone (As a ZIP)
5: Using TWRP install ZIP
6: Follow Instructions
7: Dalvik / Cache Clear (it asks after the rom is installed)
8: Reboot
9: Wait
10: Wait Some More
11: TADA
Phone has booted and connected to the network, the AllianceROM suggested above will work in very much the same way! same process.
Thats all i did. After a week of gueswork i want to thank the chap who provide me some guidance both here and via PM
Phone is now running and working, i wish i could have stock rom but you cant have it all.
On a side note if you choose to use IMEI Gurus to unlock your phone, i highly suggest you dont, there after sales support are shocking, and they refunded my money even though its not what i wanted, had the provided the help i found here id not have been so stressy with them. There service does work, but they will root your device (which they dont mention in there sales pitch they will trip knox (again not mentioned) and once done you cant actually factory reset the phone with any method. ANd youll be here reading this.
Yes there services work, but guys please make your own informed decisions about there service, would i buy again from them? i doubt it, but needs must and all that.
THanks everyone

Purchased a galaxy s3 for straight talk with cyanogenmod on it.

I bought a galaxy s3 for straighttalk from some one cuz it was really cheap. I want to remove cyanogenmod from it because the camera doesn't work and I can't save pictures. They didn't back up though so when I factory reset it, it brings it right back to cyanogenmod. How do I get the original OS for the s3 back on it? Im new to this kind of stuff so I didn't even know where to look on the forums here. And the person I bought it from is no help, I think they didn't even know how they really did it. Can some one help me or point me in the right direction please?
Sincerely,

I need to know if you have the Sprint version (S960L) or the Verizon version (S968C). Most likely you have the S968C.
When you tell me your device model number, I can link you to your firmware and you can flash that via Odin.

If you want to flash the stock firmware, you will need to go to Sammobile.com and enter your model number in the search feature there. It will lead you to your firmware, download it on PC.
Make sure you have installed "USB drivers for Samsung phones", you can find them with a Google search, or if you already have Kies installed then you've got the drivers.
On the device, go to system settings>developer options(if you don't see this in settings, you need to go to the "About Phone" option, scroll down to the "Build Number" and tap it at least 7 times to enable Developer Options). In developer options, turn on "USB debugging".
Charge your battery to at least 75%.
Once charged, press and hold the volume down+home+power buttons, at the caution screen, press up to enter download mode.
Open Odin(make sure Kies is closed and isn't running in the background, it interferes with Odin), connect the device to PC with device in download mode. If the device is recognized, you'll get a colored COMM# box. If you don't have that, try a different USB port, make sure your cable is the stock cable.
In Odin, select the AP or PDA button(older Odin has PDA button, newer Odin has AP button). Go to where you downloaded and stored the firmware on your PC, select it.
When you get back to the Odin screen, make sure the only options that are checked are auto reboot and F. reset time.
Click start, when it is done, you will get a green PASS! and the device will reboot, go through setup wizard and enjoy your device.
you are the true MVP of the internet tonight! thanks so much for breaking it down for me haha ive asked all over, here and reddit and few other sites, no one would help me like that! the download for the firmware is going to be an hour from sammobile since im not paying for membership haha but i have work in the morning so ill let it run while i sleep, and do everything in the morning. ill post here tomorrow either in the morning or at night after work and let you know how it went! once again thanks again!

Try booting to stock recovery and do a factory reset and wipe cache partition in recovery then reboot.
i had auto reboot and f reset time and PDA checked. booting it in stock recovery, factory reset, and wipe cache partition worked! thanks so much for all your help! i have one more question for ya though. the reason i wanted to delete cyanogenmod is because the camera wouldnt load and i couldnt save images and i wasnt able to go online using data, i could only use wifi. so when out all i could do was call and text, and the mms didnt work. any clue as to why?

The ROMs were actually built for the Verizon S3(SCH-I535), they are 4G devices, this makes them require a SIM card to regulate the 4G data they use, this makes our device require a CDMA LTE SIM(Verizon 4G LTE SIM or Straight Talk CDMA LTE SIM from the BYOP kit, the LTE version, not the GSM AT&T/T-Mobile kit). I'm actually the one that figured out that a SIM was needed for the ROMs to work. I can explain in detail, but I'll keep it short instead.
Even though our device is 3G and doesn't require a SIM under normal circumstances, with the SIM inserted in our device with those ROMs, we then have working mobile data and MMS, sometimes it requires setting APNs in the ROM along with using the SIM to get stock MMS working, otherwise, MMS would only work when using a 3RD party app for MMS.
A lot of people bricked this device trying to figure out why mobile data wasn't working before I discovered this SIM dependency. I've actually worked with a few developers trying to remove the SIM dependency so our device could use the ROMs without a SIM but nothing works, anything done to remove the dependency, kills all chances of connectivity, even call and text. I also helped with creating the first and only TWRP custom recovery specifically compiled for our d2tfnvzw(Tracfone on Verizon network Straight Talk S3) device. The other recoveries are actually d2vzw(Verizon Wireless S3) but they work on our device also, just not specifically.
The Straight Talk S3 can use the Verizon recoveries and ROMs because it is actually a rebranded Verizon S3(SCH-I535) and actually has the I535 model number stamped on our motherboards and other hardware inside our device, the only difference is that the 4G capability was disabled in the radio(no, using the 4G SIM will not give you 4G data). It is not "similar" to the Verizon S3, it IS the Verizon S3 modified for Straight Talk.
I can actually get you set up with some very good 5.1.1 Lollipop custom ROMs packed with features including working camera(we have marshmallow but front camera isn't working, that is always an issue with new ROMs because stock camera is closed source software, developers are not allowed to use it, they have to piece the coding together from scratch so it takes a while to fix), if you can get a used, previously activated Verizon 4G SIM($3-5 on eBay, used SIMs are better than new SIMs, new SIM gives aggravating issues) or Straight Talk BYOP LTE SIM. The ROMs are MUCH better than the stock JB 4.1.2 firmware. Let me know and I can get you setup and you won't even need the PC to do any of it. It can all be done with apps and your mobile browser. Using WiFi to download on the device instead of mobile data to download the ROM files you'll need, the apps that will flash the files you need are very simple to use. After the files are downloaded all you need is a click here and a click there and about 30 minutes of time and you'll be running something much better than stock with everything working as it should.
I have a guide posted here for flashing CM/CM based ROMs on our device and how to set up SIM and APNs, along with precautionary steps for your protection and troubleshooting steps for data issues after flashing the ROM and how to restore data connectivity if you do something wrong along the way.
If you do a google search using our model number, you'll find stuff everywhere that I have posted about this model number.
wow thats impressive stuff! i wish i could learn to do all that haha. I would love a working ROM on my s3 though, touch whiz is lame! i wont be able to buy the card till tomorrow because i dont have a card right now because i just moved to CT and had a bank that was only in TX and havent opened anything here yet, so ill have to give the cash to a buddy and have him order with his. I actually did the BYOP to straight talk as well when i couldnt use my s3 and i bought my friends s5, it had at&t, and thats where my straight talk service is on right now.. You have ROMs that would run on that by chance? Either one of them would be fun, I dont mind toying with the s3 a bit more though since its basically my side phone incase something happens with my s5.

The ST S5 is the Verizon S5 developer edition, the same as the ST S3 is the Verizon S3, the ST S5 is a Verizon rebrand also. Fortunately since it's a developer edition, that means it has an unlocked bootloader so that means you can safely flash the device with custom ROMs if there are any for the Verizon S5, I haven't looked but I'm sure it has ROMs(the other Verizon devices have locked bootloader and they will NEVER be able use anything but stock and modified stock ROMs, they can't use true custom ROMs like Cyanogen because it hard bricks the device because of the locked bootloader).

Sorry, I misunderstood you, if your S5 came from AT&T then it is AT&T. I was saying that the Straight Talk version of the S5 is a Verizon S5 dev edition. AT&T is not. It will need to use the AT&T S5 ROMs if any exist.
There are a plethora of ROMs for the S3, they are all different so you'll have to check them out for yourself. OctOS 5.1.1 is my favorite and is the most stable and has everything working including front camera. I will have to link you to my copy of it though because it is no longer available for download on XDA. I'm using OctOS marshmallow right now but front camera isn't working yet.
To find the other ROMs, view this forum in a PC or mobile browser, find the Compact tab, click it, then find the Verizon SIII on the list, click it and it will take you to the Verizon S3 forum, then you'll see an Original Android Development and an Android Development subforum there. The ROMs can be found in threads in those two forums, use ONLY the ROMs that specifically say "d2vzw" in their names, do not use anything that says stock or TW or anything that mentions locked bootloader, modem, firmware, Safestrap recovery or Fashfire, that stuff is specifically for the Verizon S3 ONLY and will brick your device, read the threads, the first post in each ROM thread will list the ROM features and instructions for flashing(ignore these instructions and use the ones I link you to instead), but you'll need to be rooted and have custom recovery installed(my guide will explain how to get custom recovery).
Install the Towelroot app on your device, open it, tap the "make it rain" button and you'll be rooted.
Then go to Playstore and install SuperSU, open it to update the binaries.
Then, once you've found the ROM you want and its' compatible Gapps package(Google apps, the thread should mention which one you need), download them and put them both on extsdcard.
Then follow this thread to get a custom recovery installed, flash the ROM and Gapps and setup SIM/APNs. It is a very long guide but it is detailed step by step as simple as I could make it. Pay attention to the warnings and do the things I listed as safety measures for future reference.

Cool, just don't forget to use Towelroot or Cydia Impactor to root the S3 then install SuperSU, that must be done before you do anything else.
Let me know if you need anything.

Just rooted and downloaded supersu, I tried to pm you but its saying you aren't accepting them. I have one last question before I head to bed. I just realised, I can still flash a rom in here without the 4g sim still just won't have service, is that correct?

Sorry, I forgot that I blocked messages from the public because I was getting too many people asking for help. I have it set to only allow friends and forum administrators. Oops!!
There are older builds of Kit Kat 4.4.4 that can be flashed without SIM and everything works, but they probably aren't available for download anymore.
Yes, you can flash the ROMs just fine, you'll still have call and text, you'll just need to put the SIM in when you get it and reboot the device then set up the SIM and APNs like my guide says and then reboot again and you should be good to go, make sure you backup your IMEI(NVdata backup) like the guide says also, then be careful when you flash. If you flash and you lose all service including calling then don't do anything until you get in touch with me, if you make the wrong move from there, you'll make a mess that will be difficult to fix.

Bought A Phone Off Ebay, How Can I TRULY WIPE The fUNK OUT Of IT?

Hello All,
trying to get my learn on.. heard about Nethunter and want to throw it on some mobile devices.
Read their page and they strongly recommended and stated the OnePlus One was their recommended device. So I purchased it on eBay and am raring to go but then life interfered.. Almost a year now has gone by since I purchased it.
Fast fwd to about 2 weeks ago.. Out of Nowhere the seller hit me up stating if everything was ok since the phone hasn't been used. I emailed him back thanking him for his concern and stated I was curious as to how he knew it hadn't been used? 2 Weeks and still no reply..
That got me thinking.. maybe this phone has been "COMPROMISED"
#1 How best to verify and confirm I have a clean phone, I have done nothing but sign it on to my WiFI here at home and used it for a total of less than 30mins to test that it worked...
#2 Anyone familiar with Nethunter and have a best practice guide on how to install on a device? Their webpage lists the following, " Our freely downloadable images come with easy to follow installation and setup instructions to get you up and running in no time at all." However I have downloaded several times the img's and these so-called "easy" instructions are now where to be found.. When I google I come across blogs with 50+ steps.. so I just wanna make sure I'm following something decent before I give it WHAT FOR!
please advise!

The seller probably used the IMEI number to tell if the device had been activated on a network, it wasn't a "hack".
Boot to recovery and factory reset the device, then wipe the cache partition, that should wipe anything on the device, unless there is something hidden in the system partition, factory reset wouldn't remove that. To remove anything in the system partition, you need to flash the full stock firmware on the device. That will return it new like it came out of the box. To flash the firmware, do a Google search for:
"Return to stock (your model number)"

Right, it jus funny that the phone was off for more or less a year.. and within the same day that I turned it on, this guy contacts me outta nowhere.
I suppose it could still all be coincidence..
Its just that based on the other items he's selling I'm pretty sure he's into INFOSEC or at least PEN-testing..
but gotcha, I will do as you suggest and go from there!

P.S. if anyone knows about Nethunter would definitely appreciate help with those install directions..

Yeah, flashing custom works also, I didn't know if there were custom ROMs available or if you even wanted custom.

Well to be honest I couldn't find "stock" Android and after a few hours of searching gave up. Even the AOSP site was no help, more confusing than anything really...
Then in despair I realized that there was a reason CyanogenMod OS kept popping up in the searches. Apparently thats what this phone shipped with...
I HATE IT THO, like where is the multitask window?
Maybe I'm too spoiled with Android ONE phones but this OS just seems like a step backwards to me..
Anyways, I now have NETHUNTER flashed and working...
That was the entire point of even buying this phone.
So now to spend endless hours learning Kali/Nethunter!
wish me luck.

Security concern - please help! Does a ROM clean my phone?

Hi xda!
So a few days ago, late at night and yes i know this probalby was one of the most idiotic things i've ever done, i tried to recover some deleted messages on my phone.
I guess it was one emotional, spur of the moment action and i came accross "dr fone" ...
Bought it on the googly play store, it had about 5M downlaods, 3 stars, so i tought maybe people couldn't recover what ever. So i installed it it than asked me to also install some software on my PC, so i did without thinking. It told me the phone will be rooted because then i can search better so i did. Please remember it was a emotional/without thinking moment, I guess my gut told me it is stupid but i just wanted the messages back. I really hate myself for this i really do and ...
It wasn't able to recover the messages a few minutes later i kind of freaked out, removed the app from my phone, uninstalled the the app from pc and did go to bed with a very bad feeling but i tried telling myself its fine. Next morning i woke up immediately rememberd, frist thing i did was completely wipe my pc (new windows installation, hope that did the trick for the pc) and tried to factory reset my phone.
I noticed kind of a weired message something like "could not find correct software version" (cant recall it right now). Anyway I did make the factory reset and ...
I couldn't stop thinking about this message, at least what i figured out is that its probably because the phone was rooted right?
So i did some further investigations and realized after rooting a phone they would have had full access to the OS and could have done some modifications and a factory reset just clears data from phone but does not reset the OS and ROM. So if they put something bad there it wouldn't be reseted and further now i may not retrieve further updates and so on...
So my conclusion after sleeping a day or two about it is to put a new ROM on my phone because this wipes it clean right?
So i have following questions:
1. Is it possible the bootloader on my phone is hacked and how likely is it? (If likely what can i do about it?)
2. Does putting a new ROM on my phone wipe it clean?
3. I saw that there are Samsung stock roms out there are they legit should i use them? I'm also thinking about Lineage OS, since my phone is ****ed anyway and i might get no further samsung updates. - What are your toughts about this?
4. Guess i can figure this out myself (the other questions are bigger concerns to me) but some pointers for installing the ROM? (guess just watch a guide or so and do it with odin?)
I really really hope you guys can help me/ provide me with some background knwoledge.
Really appreciate your help!
Also thanks in advance (im really concerned)

Flashing a full manufacturers ROM with a full wipe will clean your phone. Flashing a custom ROM or only part of manufacturers won't. You don't say what manufacturer your phone is but I assume it's a Samsung since you mention Odin & Samsung so you want the full 4 files firmware to flash with Odin from a trusted source eg sammobile. com
