[TFQ] Proton Kernel [JB] Q&A - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

This is for questions and answers (that's what Q&A means) regarding the ICS and JB proton kernels. If you have a logcat, do not post it here.

I changed it to sarcasm. This thread will probably be deleted since I reported it as a duplicate before seeing yours was ICS.

Well hopefully, they will check before deleting it.

There's no such thing as a TWRP installer. You either have a recovery from TWRP or CWM. If your asking about amarullz AROMA installer then no. It's not been used on any of the newer builds that have come out that I'm aware of.

Kyngigg for the win. lol
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Have you flashed it over the newer builds? I'm a CWM guy myself but I can say for sure that the GUI of TWRP is much nicer. Actually give me a minute and I'll report back with the results.

Not yet. I did learn how to incorporate it into a build today though. There were some issues with the installer and I know FB has been very busy.

Don't. Status 7 error. I'm sure with some edits to the updater script it would flash over fine. However it's an OLD version of TWRP. Maybe get FB's permission to get it to 2.4 then go from there. Either way, thanks for reminding me it existed. CWM FTW(for the win). LOL

Doing serious multi tasking. Besides, I never read what I'm posting answers to anyway

It does. Problem is once you flash almost anything else it's gone. Unless you know some trickery to keep it around. Like
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel --boot.img
Don't do this unless you really know what you are doing. Google helps. lol

FUSE
Any chance we could get this kernel built with either exFAT or FUSE (so I can use Paragon Partition)?
I'm having a devil of a time keeping FAT32 64GB SD cards stable without.

Mines 64gb fat32 class 6 and it works fine. It's not the kernel. exfat has only been used on a few devices at this point. CM doesn't support it and doesn't look like there going to with JB so why ask for it to be supported on a two year old device? What's not stable on your card? I/O would be a could place to start looking.

This kernel is for BML roms. Wifi calling works on those roms because they are stock based.

New to this phone or not. Search is the best feature on XDA.
If it's not BML, it's MTD. Search the Q&A forum for MTD. There you will find a thread by eollie which quotes the epicmtd thread and a post of mine... here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699506
(yes, I have answered this question a billion times. Why, because no one searches.)
Edit: No, this will not work with MTD roms, like CM7, CM9, AOKP, SlimICS, etc... This will work with Valhalla, Valhalla Black, Unnamed, Stock UVKJ6 based roms.

I first want to than you for your support on a "update for a BML kernel".
i think it belongs in dev but still don't have enough posts to post.
I ran into a few issues with no log cat because of hardware freeze.
1st Tegrak will not load module for custom tweaks. Hardware failure vibrates indefinitely, and battery pull needed. works fine if you don't try and tweak. running 1.4 GHz without optimization works fine but can't underclock because of issue. the screen freezes and becomes pixilated.
restoring from nano backup finishes but stays at gs4g boot screen for t mobile
nano restore might be user error. i just factory reset and restored from there using the one click. restoring nano after one clicking resulted in same boot screen freeze as original
im sorry i don't have log cats but i hope i can provide further information if requested.
running latest Valhalla Black Edition with 1.3 OC undervolted
created backup with VB kernel recovery
booted fine with first flash of kernel running at 1.4
tried tegrak to underclock 1.4 and hardware froze with pixilation of screen in very light but noticable amount
reboot
wifi fix didn't work with flashing with cwm, suceeded with flash just no end result
tried to recover using cwm recovery with modded kernel caused boot freeze
one clicked back with no problems
i love this forum and want to try and provide feedback when possible, thank you for all you have accomplished over the years and i can't wait to see the perfect kernel and modem for ics. FB i love the AOKP. Unicorn Power!!! thank you all for all of your awesome work.

I'm just saying. Everything you type is one long run-on sentence.
Notice how I break mine up.
It makes what you are saying easier to convey to others.
Don't worry. I was tired and grumpy
So what we learned:
Type like you're writing a letter
Don't use nano backup
Download alogcat/alogrec
Wiping cache and dalvik is fine, don't always need to wipe data, but sometimes you do.
I get grumpy sometimes too
Is this the kind of battery life we can expect for the mtd version of this kernel and/or the aries kernel port? I noticed this does have some things from aries (per Github History). The battery life with this kernel is epic, better than anything else I've used.
Thanks,
David
We don't know what kind of battery life you will expect from the ICS kernel because no one has tested the ICS kernel because bryan hasn't finished creating it yet. If and when it's released you'll get to see what kind of battery life you get with the way you use your own phone.

There is a reason for calling this kernel BlastOff. It's going to go through the galaxy of snacks Google has named their Android releases. It's starting off on Planet Gingerbread, BML style.
Eventually, if the stars align, it will end up reincarnated as MTD on Planet Gingerbread.
After reincarnation, it will head towards planet ICS... and on and on...
For now, we are still packing the ship with goodies. OC/UV, governers, I/O schedulers, mmc changes, and bcm4329 have already been packed. But I'm still adding more!
So for the medium term, this kernel will stay BML. You may see me experiment with MTD, but I would stay away from that stuff and stick with the BML kernel for now.
Enjoy my naming scheme.

No need for that kind of reply, I was simply asking a question. From what I can tell, this does use bits and pieces from Aries and that's what prompted the question. I didn't ask for an eta or anything to that affect. I also know that battery life is dependent on usage, but I know for a fact that on gingerbread the standby time is leaps and bounds better than what we have for ics (currently) (for most users) . It's even been mentioned that the kernel for ics had some battery draining issues by Bryan himself.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
That "kind of reply" was merited. Like I said in that post, we're not gonna know how the battery will be until the kernel gets created and tested. I can give you a prediction and tell you that it'll last you 10 days with heavy usage but I may be wrong.
We won't know until we test it.
BTW, unnamed - bhundven edition has been posted to the teamacid github.
I'm not making an official zip yet, as we have some bugs still to work out, but if you want a rom to play around with the new kernel, git clone it and run the mkzip.sh.
Let me know what you think, if you feel so daring
(again, disclaimer, I'm not responsible for messing your phone up, thats your problem. This rom has been tested and won't brick you, unless you do something stupid. This rom will not work with any other kernel, for now.)

[ROM] Manual/working port of PARANOID ANDROID 1.97a

UPDATE: After a few additional tweaks to the framework, this rom appears to be working for both green and red lens defy users. I've personally used it as my daily driver for several days this week, and found it to be stable and very usable. The one thing that does not work for me is the GPS, and quite honestly, I haven't had time to look in to it.
Here is a complete, working port of PARANOID ANDROID 1.97a for Defy. It is based on Galaxy S2 PARANOID 1.97 and Epsylon's CM10 1208. This is NOT a simple port using the port tool and includes the Framework changes necessary for the hardware.
I take no responsibility for any consequences from your decision to try this rom, and being based on alpha releases, I'm sure there are other problems, but I've personally used this rom for a prolonged period of time and the only problem I've had was with the GPS not locking.
Few things to note:
1. No offense to anyone, but this thread is not for complete noobs. While I will try to help when I can, I cannot promise any level of support. If you don't know how to flash via CWM, this is not for you.
2. This rom is based on the Froyo kernel and has been confirmed to work on MB525 with green as well as red lens. This is no guarantee that it will work on YOUR phone.
3. I intentionally used 1.97 as that version was very stable on my Galaxy Nexus - much moreso than 1.98 or 1.99
4. I've cleared the PARANOID defaults that most of the other PA roms come with. You can manually change the individual app settings under Paranoid Settings, or via the \system\etc\paranoid\properties.conf file which stores a record for every app including DPI and Layout.
5. After installing this rom, I "supercharged" it using a v6supercharger script (link below) and it did seem to help make the rom smoother and more responsive.
Special thanks to Epsylon3 and Quarx for their work on CM10 for the Defy, and Molesarecoming and D4rKn3sSyS for their work on PARANOID.
Thanks to brajesh.sharma87 for pointing out the bootloop "gottcha" of simply recompiling the framework (for specifics google "framework recompile bootloop" and read the first thread that comes up).
I strongly encourage any/all of you to contribute (make donations) to these developers.
DOWNLOAD ROM (double check MD5 before flashing - 96D409B4692319D9DA63FAA9CE1516A6)
Download latest gapps from here.
Here is the v6 supercharger script that I've been using and is confirmed to work with this rom.
Make sure you're on Froyo kernel. Boot in to CWM recovery. Factory reset, wipe data/cache/dalvik. Install rom, followed by gapps. Wipe data/cache/dalvik again. Reboot (should take about 2-5 minutes). Install and configure the v6 script. Enjoy!
Looks pretty neat man! I might give it a shot soon. Any known bugs for now?
This is only PA rom which I manage to get work on my red lens defy without bootloop..

Are you guys running Froyo kernels? Did you do a full wipe of data, cache, and dalvik after the install?
Trying flashing the CM7 kernel, this rom, wiping, and booting right away before you install gapps or anything else. And make sure you give it a full 5 minutes as the first boot can take some time.
Also keep an eye on the led by the proximity sensor. Let me know if it flashes red when it loops.

Sorry, didn't even see your thread. Quite honestly, I've only been playing with PA for the last couple of weeks and have posted in rajesh.sharma87 thread as well as the rom porter thread, but nobody over there seems to want to read.
Have you looked at the logs from the devices that loop? Send me one if you have an example. I've tried lots of different combinations in conjunction with the framework-res mods before I got this to boot, but have not had any problems with this version. Interesting...

If you're on Defy red lens, I'd be curious to have you try this rom. I'm starting to think it may be a difference in the hardware.
I'm on BL6 (flashed GB when first leaked), but have been going back and forth between GB and Froyo kernel roms and found Epsy's to be most stable for my device (which is why I used his as the base).

First and foremost, thanks for all your help
Perhaps I was not clear enough, but I do not have the free time to take on any kind of support role. Please understand that my sole intention of this thread, was to provide/share a more recent version of PA/CM10 that I have been unable to obtain from anybody else. No offense intended, but I did ask you on several occasions to post a more recent version than the 1.95 you have in your (still existent) thread, and the only response I received was that you didn't have the bandwidth.
I also tried to work through/with kadevil's thread, but he pretty much ignored all the feedback he was getting about the tool not working for PA and JB.
Again, I was looking for a more recent version of PA (1.97+) with a more recent CM10 (8/06+) and was unable to find a working version. I built one that works for me, and wanted to share with anybody else that may be in a similar position...

What's the best jelly bean rom for the One S (S4). I'm tired of waiting for the official OTA from HTC so i'm going to try a custom rom. I've heard CM10 is one the best but i could only find nightlies in the development section. Any suggestions?

Nightlies work fine so don't worry about that and if you want a bit of a tweaked one then BAKED BlackBean is a good rom. But before you do anything if you haven't flashed a rom on this phone then you want to get yourself into the All-In-One Toolkit thread and do a bit of read before you do any flashing and also don't install CWM but instead install TWRP recovery.
Oh right thanks dude, and yh I've done rooting on this phone before so I've got the all in one kit. Atm I'm unrooted so I don't have a custom recovery so what's different about twrp from cwm

Its not buggy and can mount SD and if you have 1.09 or lower Hboot it can also flash the boot.img.

Not really but you are bested off with TWRP. Its mostly it will boot into CWM if you turn off the phone with usb cable connected and cant mount SD.

Baked is good too, but I find the latest PAC Man ROM to be really stable, and has lots of good tweaks and customizations available (its also one of the more recently updated AOSP base ROMs).
Also make sure to use a good AOSP kernel, and klin has the only good solution, his Fusion 3.1. It works very well for me. If your coming from SENSE, you will need to flash that kernel as well in order to load the ROM (check the kernel thread for install instructions and follow carefully, since you may need to fastboot flash in addition to flashing the .zip).
Cheers,

LOL, I remember your posts in that kernel thread... Hard to know what the issue is. Seems like kernels can have feelings too, and it dont like you, lol.
But in all seriousness, I would definately second your recomendation for using TWRP custom recovery. It has lots of useful features and is way more intuitive than Clockwork. Its also been updated more recently than Clockwork for the HTC One S.
I used clockwork for a while until I tried TWRP and now havent looked back. If you try it, you will see why its better.

Yeah, klin said it won't work for baked as of yet.
And I would have to agree that baked is the nicest rom available for the one s. I have it UC to 1.026ghz and it's as responsive and quick as anything else at 1.5 or even OC'd higher. The battery life is excellent as well
There's also some settings he added under settings->baked rom control->prop modder/init.d that are really nice. Some signal enhancements, boot settings etc.
I'm not sure if you prefer sense to aosp, or if the main reason for wanting jb is for Google Now, but the viper rom has GNow working just fine and is sense based.

Help with flashing kernel

I am trying to install Franco kernel on my phone, and I have found the thread for this, but I am really confused on how to install it on my phone. I know that it's the same as installing a ROM, so I downloaded the appropriate version for my phone, but it said "Failed" while flashing it with TWRP. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, you are doing something wrong. FranciscoFranco does not have a kernel for the Verizon GSIII. Stop what you're doing and use a kernel from the VZW GSIII Original dev section.

You need an AOSP kernel. Not TW. KT747 is probably the way to go. Just make sure you download the AOSP version. Next time say what ROM you're running. That way you can avoid confusion early on.
Oh, alright. So that kernel is battery friendly? And is there a specific thread where I can find kernels for my ROM and or phone?

Not sure if there is a single thread that lists all the kernels. Just go here to the original android development forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1692
and look for threads that have AOSP and Kernel in the thread title.
Edit - actually, perhaps this thread may help you:

When is your CM10.1 rom dated as? When was it released? You might need a kernel from before the rom's date.

As in, from March? lol Ahh, you basically can't flash any current kernel out unless it's from around March 4th. Ahh, you're using the Linux 3.0 based version then. All AOSP roms have moved to the Linux 3.4 kernel as of early April Edit: Actually,mid-March was the Linux 3.0 to 3.4 switch which means all kernels are now incompatible with roms dated say before early March.
Here's KT747 from March 5th, should be fine flashing this.
Edit: flash the AOSP 4.2 version btw, that's what CM10.1 is based on

Nah, flashing kernels only necessitates you wiping Cache and Dalvik Cache in recovery. Neither of which is user data. Cache and Dalvik Cache get rebuilt once the rom boots so it's not something you'll notice besides the initial boot.
As for your second question, no this is not the only kernel you can use. If you want to stay on this exact rom, then you'll just have to do a lot of searching through kernel threads, for their Linux 3.0 based kernels from early March. However, this goes along with what I said in my prior post. Given that you are on a March 4th rom, you can only use Linux 3.0 based kernels which kernel devs usually mention in their changelog. Most (honestly all) kernel devs have stopped actively developing these and have moved onto Linux 3.4 kernels which will not boot on the rom you are on because it is outdated.
I encourage you to upgrade your rom to a current one and to keep up with active development that way you don't get left behind when flashing kernels (if that's your thing).

I wouldn't. Being that you're moving from a March CM build to a May CM build with a lot of changes, you need to do a full wipe in recovery to upgrade roms. Doing a dirty flash in this case introduces way too much room for issues to arise. As long as you do not wipe internal storage then you will not lose your data on the internal sdcard.

So if I flash from recovery, everything will be exactly the way it was?

[KERNEL][1/27] - Stock Kernel v2 - built for 4.3 / ML1 with unlocked firmware!

Stock Kernel
Background:
When Verizon released the ML1 Update you had two options, take the new boot-loader and be locked or NOT take the new boot-loader and remain unlocked. If you choose the latter of the two options the firmware and boot-loader never got updated. This seemed Ok but it would cause WiFi not to work because of the way Verizon coded the kernel to look at the new firmware (from my understanding). If the firmware was not the new version thee WiFi would just never turn on.
Intent:
As the name implies, this is just a recompiled stock kernel without the "WiFi bug" for Android 4.3 / ML1 based ROMS on the OLD UNLOCKED firmware! If you have taken the new firmware (aka: the 4.3 OTA) then you dont have to worry about this! It does not apply to you! This is Only for people on the OLD UNLOCKED firmware!
Why no features added?
Not everyone wants a super duper overclock kernel with 10 million features. Some prefer the simplicity of stock. I am one of those people! This is just a STOCK kernel with no mods other than working WiFi for the ML1 base on the old unlocked firmware.
Note: Version 2 is posted with the exFAT option checked for those using exFAT. Oversight on original build!

Funny thing is... This is a PURE stock build. BUT... here are some oddities I noticed over the stock kernel from VZW...
1. The compiled size is smaller (odd)
2. I used the defconfig that samsung said to use and I dont think its the typical Verizon defconfig. The name just seemed weird.
Its been a long time since I did a kernel so my observations may be pointless...
But I can agree with your statement that it is very smooth. I am running the stock roooted ROM I made with this kernel and I am tempted to get rid of my Note 3!
I think Samsung posted the wrong source or modified it after Verizon used it for the ML1 ROM (or I downloaded the wrong one!!!! lol).
Hmm, that is interesting...

Just so you know the ML1 ROM has this kernel in it.
AS far as battery life, Im sure LK will be better, ITs a tweaked kernel.
This is a pure stock build no changes to the code, AT ALL.
I didint even add in a build name. I just did make defconfig followed by make -j16.
The odd thing is, WiFi just happens to work but the Verizon build doesn't. Go figure!
Thats it!
After installing this kernel on old&slows ROM, my SDcard discounts and won't remount. I have wiped both caches and rebooted.
Anyone else having this issue? I don't have time to clean wipe right now, but I will try that when I have some time.
