720 HD lags on TV - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have no problem viewing a 720 HD show on the Transformers screen but when I use HDMI to watch it on a TV I get a distinct lag. Is this to be expected or do I have a faulty port?
Sent from my GT-P3113 using Tapatalk HD

What sort of lag? Are you stock? If not, which ROM? Which sort of 720p (encoder/container)? What do you use to watch it? DO yuo use hardware decoding? For audio or video or both?
Using what's in my sig watching 720p MKV on a computer monitor works without lag once I'm overclocked. Stock I can't play 720p mkv without lag even on the tablet. 720p mp4 works without lag on stock and custom ROM without overclock.

I'm on stock and I use Dice as my player. Have to admit that I'm not overly concerned with codecs and such since they all seem to be supported by Dice. Suppose I can take a closer look, but since the Tegra chip has very smooth graphics in games I just assumed there wouldn't be any problems with HD videos.
I guess the lag would be described as dropped frames, sound continues and the video jumps forward half a second or so.

The encoders/containers can be supported but still require more processing power than your device can offer; that's why you need to overclock to get decent MKV playback but not MP4. Can you try another player perhaps? MX Player does wonders for me with hardware decoding for video and software for audio.

I shall download it and give it a try, what puzzles me is that it is fine on the screen but not on the TV. To be honest I believe the screen have more pixels than the TV.

Optimal Video Settings for High Quality Playback Using Core Player?

I have Core Player and love it's steaming capabilities. Doesn't skip and has plenty of feature to customize. The problem I'm running into is playing videos from my SD card. I have two TV show episodes loaded onto my microSD, 640x480. For some reason, Core Player skips a frame or two, sometimes, and freezes/lags for a solid 5-7 seconds other times.
I'm wondering if there are any fixes for this? What settings work best for the Core Player for the smoothest possible feedback?
Unfortunately...
This is not the answer that you want to hear (and I hope someone can prove me wrong) but you will probably will have to reencode those videos to a more CorePlayer friendly format if you want to use CorePlayer on your Raphael to play those files.
CorePlayer doesn't play nicely with H264 files yet on our Qualcomm chips. You can reencode to something like divx/xvid or wait until CorePlayer 2.0 to release sometime in 2009. They claim better hardware support will come with that version. Or you can reencode for WMP. Yeah, I know, kind of a bummer. =/
More info can be found on xda and fuzemobility. I think there is an xda thread started by k9tim regarding this issue if you want to read up on it.
One thing that helped for non H264 files was to increase the buffer size tenfold and decrease video quality to Medium or Low for better framerates. Didn't help me for H264 files but it did help me with some mpegs. I hope someone can prove me wrong.

I watch movies and tv shows in xvid and divx with 1.25, default settings, high quality, with absolutey no slow downs at all. What exactly are you trying to play?

Well, you're right - It's certainly not good news. But the bold'd part made it that much better, so it evens out
As far as the info goes, I really appreciate it. It's really no problem for me to leave my computer on overnight with a whole queue of files to re-encode. It'd suck if I was trying to get other things done too, but a fan on high and a few solid hours overnight should (hopefully) take care of these issues. Thanks again.

You, or anyone else who reads this and has zero issues with playback, wouldn't happen to have drivers from this post installed, would you?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2892184&postcount=357
I'm wondering if that's the issue - different drivers on different phones. I have a stock ROM Alltel HTC Touch Pro, with no real desire to upgrade/flash/change the PRL. I ***LOVE*** it the way it is and probably won't be getting a different phone for 3-4 years. 99.8% perfect in my book (with potential factored in, too)
I have a stock Fuze and can get good playback.
Again it all depends on the source files your trying to play. Some of my trilinear and high quality audio encoded files chop / lag every 60th frame or so but at high quality its worth it. Medium quality it does not slow down too much. Most play smoothly till high action in which case they will slow a little.
Increasing the buffer and playing with the method of drawing can increase your quality. If I was not half asleep and my phone in the other room (wife asleep) I would check my settings. If I remember I will post them in the morning. Most of them have not been changed though.

I have those drivers installed AND playback issues. But you should install them anyway.
I'm working out some methods of encoding at the moment and will get back to you. I tried to fight the transcoding, but am starting to give in. The device just doesn't have a lot of headroom as far as playing videos, with currently available players.
Any other thoughts on this or are we all just waiting on the next Core Player update?
Did installing the drivers help you at all?

Flash and video

I have been somewhat disappointed in video quality--some flash plays very choppy and stutters, as well as downloaded movies (AVI and WMV HD) I am suprised at this--I also have an Archos 101, which plays video very well. Is it the video player that I am using? I installed the latest TnT lite version (Thanks Roebeet). Any suggestions on how to improve video/streaming quality?
Not sure what the problem you may be having is, but 2.20 update plays higher def Flash video and all non Flash videos I have tried smoothly, except some H264 720p and above. No 1080p works or very well, regardless on the Gtablet (yet).
Based on PMs I am getting and posts at Archosfans, 101 Flash performance is FAR weaker than the Droid X which has the same chipset. The Gtablet plays Flash videos smoothly that the Droid X plays like a slide show.
Seems you have some issues with your rom install, since even prior to 2.20, the 2.04 build also played video far better than the Droid X, which has twice the ram and is not capped at 800mhz like the 101 is. Also spanks my Incredble too.
You may need to go into clockwork and clean cache then reboot. Your experience with Flash video is polar opposite of mine
HD WMV files are weak on the Gtablet, but like other HD content, I see no point since the files suck up too much space, drain battery more and all current tablets are "600p". What is point of 720p or better for watching on device with "600p"?

[Q] Hdmi out Problems

Seem to be having HDMI out problems, I bought this phone so I can watch my movies out to a big screen, I tried it on two different TVs. At first it works, and then when I try stuff or like try to play angry birds it start flickering going back and forth from snow back to the phone, sometimes just stops working all together. Also it looks like crap, like trying to use the web or what not, especially text.
when I try to watch 720p movies i downloaded in like mkv, they play so smooth and look great on the phone, but out to the TV, most times the phone will slow completely down, and get really choppy and laggy, if you try to get the menu back or play buttons. if it does play it doesn't look like a 720p should, comparing on playing the file on my computer, it looks pixelated and doesn't play that smooth, kinda gives you motion sickness sometimes.
Does anyone else have these problems, is this a defective phone that I should return? can anyone confirm.
also just curious, I seen other people say they played the trailers that came on their phones and it looked great. Mine didn't come with any trailers on it.
Well mine came with trailers, though I didn't try looking at them on the big screen...I did, however, look at several high resolution pictures and a 1080p video that looked great on the PHONE'S display and it's like the output is the same resolution as the phone's display (800x480) and it's just stretched to fit the screen...makes it look I'm watching an old DVD...
Because angry bird are only made for phones not a 720p resolution, lol angry bird on TV haha buy Xbox or ps2 much better ;p

The phone can not handle playback on a big screen unfortunately. The chopiness is purely due to processor lag. The hdmi out is more for presentations, not super useful
Angry Birds plays fine on my TV. As a matter of fact my nephew was playing it last night. It looks amazing on my TV. Try using an expensive HDMI cable, the cheap ones will not work. I had 2 HDMI cables and I first used the one that was like $20 and had this issue so i switched that out for the $50 cable and bam no problems. It really depends on the cable. Because of the info that's being sent thru the cable. Along with movies, I have a music video on my phone in .mp4 format in 1080p that plays perfectly, me and my friend were watching it like 20 times the other day.
Why can't i watch media hub on my tv it says it can't play on my tv when the app is running

Because the movies are copy protected. It a feature of the Media Hub. Samsung probably doesnt want people to pirate the movies/tv shows they sell on there.

Try a different player like rockplayer or I think vlc is out now too... Stock video player sucks. Also try removing stage-fright enable player = false.... See if that helps, its a line in the build.prop.

TF700T + Netflix + hdmi

I have been trying out Netflix on my TF700 and displaying on a 120hz 1080p Vizio. The sound is very out of sync with the video. This is using the HDMI port on the TF700, no bluetooth involved. During the movie there were several times when the picture became very mottled and blotchy like the video processor couldn't keep up and reduced resolution. Is the poor performance the App's fault, ICS, or what ever.
The Netflix App is so poor it is painful to use. Will be cancelling the free trial just because the App is so bad.

Get wifi analyzer from the market and see if you can choose a better (less occupied) wifi channel. The blotch is typically reduced resolution due to the connection, not the processor. Thanks to prolific hardware decoding, tegra 3 coasts through video.
Can't speak for the sync issue though. Is it in sync when you aren't using HDMI-out?
If you were using MX player, I'd say use s/W decoding for audio out of sync issues. Bit Netflix doesn't let you change those kinds of settings. Do like other poster said and try a less crowded channel.
ASUS hasn't updated the HDMI features on the Firmware version for the Infinity, it lacks a couple options that allowed you to properly fit your tablet to your HDTV's display.
The Transformer Prime has these options in it's latest firmware released several months ago, but these options are absent in the Infinity.
My only hope is that these issues are resolved once ASUS ever get around to releasing Jelly Bean for the Infinity.
I have the same problem with my new infinity. The prime it replaced worked very well with the Netflix app.
I do not see similar problems with
other video, so far.
BS player as well has great reviews and tons of features

Just tried watching a movie on the TF screen and everything was in perfect sync. The HDMI output appears to be where the out of sync condition is being introduced.
I haven't tried Netflix with the HDMI out. On my Evo 4G, when I do it, it sometimes gets out of sync. You just have to stop, and restart the movie. It works most of the time.
As for Netflix, when in the app, if it's laggy as all can be, go into the developers section in settings and turn on force 2D. It helps significantly. Read it somewhere on here and tried it. Might even help with the sync issue.
Thanks for the 2g tip makes netflix work much better. Scrolling with normal settings is terrible even without hdmi. Works normally after changing settings force 2g.

I did change force 2g to on. Netflix works much better. Voice did sync on hdmi in netflix and YouTube. A little delay on Netflix until stream got going about 1 min. I had forgotten to turn off program running on roku so i had two streams at same time. Since Netflix was almost unusable with 3g excel on and using hdmi, i did not try sync test.

I've found that my infinity doesn't output 1080p on the HDMI. Works on YouTube which leads me to believe its the Netflix app itself. Are you guys using the stock Netflix app or threaD modded one?

When i first hooked up tf i had a small boarder off screen on tv. I changed tv settings to adjust vertically and screen resized properly. I had no problems viewing netflix on hdmi to my tv. Video did not play on tf, but did show everything else.
I recently change my dsl from 1.6 meg to 12 meg. Huge difference. I am amazed that Netflix can stream at slower speeds but quality goes way down. I've read that you need at least 4 to 6 meg for good playback. Problems with playback may be caused by slow dsl.
Test on resolution of tv
Tv shows 1920 x 1080 on home screen of tf. When Netflix plays video tv shows 1280 x 720. Tf is changing hdmi output depending on what its playing.
Hulu plus will not play on hdmi.
Amazon plays through browser standard def.
Stock Netflix

To remove the bottom on screen navigation keys with HDMI out enabled:
Go to Settings, then click on the HDMI category at the bottom. The navigation bar at the bottom of the screen will disappear and you will have native 1920 x 1080 full screen output on the TV.
It's really weird that clicking the HDMI category / row instantly removes the navigation keys. It would have been better to have a show / hide preference in the HDMI settings pane...

[Q] I/O-speed improvement

So, the I/O-speed often is the bottleneck for the tf300. I knew this already, just like the most of you probably. It didn't bother me too much, as I didn't have a lot of issues because of it.
Lately I did start to encounter problems with it, because I started to use my tablet for streaming video. The result is that I can watch about 30 seconds of video, have to wait 30 seconds while the device is buffering, can watch another 30 seconds of video, wait for buffering again, and so on.... It seems the device is not capable to buffer while playing video. Well, you can imagine I don't have the patience nor the wish to watch any video till the end under these circumstances.
As I see and know that the network connection is just fine for streaming video capabilities (it works fine on my laptop and phone for instance), I am pretty sure the problems I have on the tf300 are due to the I/O-issues.
Now my specific question is: is there any solution or workaround to avoid lagging video streams because of these I/O speed issues?
And on a wider spectrum: Is there any way to improve overall I/O-speed performance on the tf300?
Any help is much appreciated.
FYI: My tf300 is rooted, but not unlocked. I prefer to keep it this way, unless there is no option at all to get around these issues without an unlocked device.

The video-stream has a bitrate varying from 0,8 to 1,5 Mbit/s.

Those youtube videos don't play well on my tf300 either, I always have to 'untick' the HD or HQ button in the videos to play them smoothly.
Do you run stock Android with latest OTA updates on your tf300?
I do run stock indeed. Only rooted.
Well, I'll give it a try by completely factory-resetting my tf300. I doubt it will make a difference, but without trying I'll never know.
Resurrecting I see this thread was never resolved, and if the streaming was addressed elswhere I couldn't find it.
Picked up this tablet recently, 4.2.1 rooted stock. Youtube streaming is unwatchable in HD - not enough buffer, but handles HQ or lower fine. Can stream 1080P fine on my desktop, and HD fine on my Razr I and Arc S. Which makes me question, why the inability to cache enough of the video on the TF300T?
Learn from linux
Hmm I stumbled across a few articles, how to improve linux for netbooks. Some involved lowering the writeback to get better I/O-speeds while batterylife gets improved. Maybe one could figure out how much of this applys with Android and the eMMC drive in our tablet and tweak it accordingly.
Best regards.
Kalle.
I had no issues with surdu_petru's overclocked kernels, got around 10000 i.o (sio scheduler) in quadrant, in saying that that kernel got me a score of 7100 on quadrant overall which must be close to the best for tegra 3s?
