[Q] I/O-speed improvement - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, the I/O-speed often is the bottleneck for the tf300. I knew this already, just like the most of you probably. It didn't bother me too much, as I didn't have a lot of issues because of it.
Lately I did start to encounter problems with it, because I started to use my tablet for streaming video. The result is that I can watch about 30 seconds of video, have to wait 30 seconds while the device is buffering, can watch another 30 seconds of video, wait for buffering again, and so on.... It seems the device is not capable to buffer while playing video. Well, you can imagine I don't have the patience nor the wish to watch any video till the end under these circumstances.
As I see and know that the network connection is just fine for streaming video capabilities (it works fine on my laptop and phone for instance), I am pretty sure the problems I have on the tf300 are due to the I/O-issues.
Now my specific question is: is there any solution or workaround to avoid lagging video streams because of these I/O speed issues?
And on a wider spectrum: Is there any way to improve overall I/O-speed performance on the tf300?
Any help is much appreciated.
FYI: My tf300 is rooted, but not unlocked. I prefer to keep it this way, unless there is no option at all to get around these issues without an unlocked device.

i/o can be a problem but this is a bit extreme even for a tf300, what kind of bitrate has that video? raw 4k?

 No, it is not raw 4k.
The video-stream has a bitrate varying from 0,8 to 1,5 Mbit/s.

Those youtube videos don't play well on my tf300 either, I always have to 'untick' the HD or HQ button in the videos to play them smoothly.
Do you run stock Android with latest OTA updates on your tf300?

I do run stock indeed. Only rooted.

Well, I'll give it a try by completely factory-resetting my tf300. I doubt it will make a difference, but without trying I'll never know.

Resurrecting I see this thread was never resolved, and if the streaming was addressed elswhere I couldn't find it.
Picked up this tablet recently, 4.2.1 rooted stock. Youtube streaming is unwatchable in HD - not enough buffer, but handles HQ or lower fine. Can stream 1080P fine on my desktop, and HD fine on my Razr I and Arc S. Which makes me question, why the inability to cache enough of the video on the TF300T?

Learn from linux
Hmm I stumbled across a few articles, how to improve linux for netbooks. Some involved lowering the writeback to get better I/O-speeds while batterylife gets improved. Maybe one could figure out how much of this applys with Android and the eMMC drive in our tablet and tweak it accordingly.
Best regards.
Kalle.

I had no issues with surdu_petru's overclocked kernels, got around 10000 i.o (sio scheduler) in quadrant, in saying that that kernel got me a score of 7100 on quadrant overall which must be close to the best for tegra 3s?

Optimal Video Settings for High Quality Playback Using Core Player?

I have Core Player and love it's steaming capabilities. Doesn't skip and has plenty of feature to customize. The problem I'm running into is playing videos from my SD card. I have two TV show episodes loaded onto my microSD, 640x480. For some reason, Core Player skips a frame or two, sometimes, and freezes/lags for a solid 5-7 seconds other times.
I'm wondering if there are any fixes for this? What settings work best for the Core Player for the smoothest possible feedback?
Unfortunately...
This is not the answer that you want to hear (and I hope someone can prove me wrong) but you will probably will have to reencode those videos to a more CorePlayer friendly format if you want to use CorePlayer on your Raphael to play those files.
CorePlayer doesn't play nicely with H264 files yet on our Qualcomm chips. You can reencode to something like divx/xvid or wait until CorePlayer 2.0 to release sometime in 2009. They claim better hardware support will come with that version. Or you can reencode for WMP. Yeah, I know, kind of a bummer. =/
More info can be found on xda and fuzemobility. I think there is an xda thread started by k9tim regarding this issue if you want to read up on it.
One thing that helped for non H264 files was to increase the buffer size tenfold and decrease video quality to Medium or Low for better framerates. Didn't help me for H264 files but it did help me with some mpegs. I hope someone can prove me wrong.

I watch movies and tv shows in xvid and divx with 1.25, default settings, high quality, with absolutey no slow downs at all. What exactly are you trying to play?

Well, you're right - It's certainly not good news. But the bold'd part made it that much better, so it evens out
As far as the info goes, I really appreciate it. It's really no problem for me to leave my computer on overnight with a whole queue of files to re-encode. It'd suck if I was trying to get other things done too, but a fan on high and a few solid hours overnight should (hopefully) take care of these issues. Thanks again.

You, or anyone else who reads this and has zero issues with playback, wouldn't happen to have drivers from this post installed, would you?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2892184&postcount=357
I'm wondering if that's the issue - different drivers on different phones. I have a stock ROM Alltel HTC Touch Pro, with no real desire to upgrade/flash/change the PRL. I ***LOVE*** it the way it is and probably won't be getting a different phone for 3-4 years. 99.8% perfect in my book (with potential factored in, too)
I have a stock Fuze and can get good playback.
Again it all depends on the source files your trying to play. Some of my trilinear and high quality audio encoded files chop / lag every 60th frame or so but at high quality its worth it. Medium quality it does not slow down too much. Most play smoothly till high action in which case they will slow a little.
Increasing the buffer and playing with the method of drawing can increase your quality. If I was not half asleep and my phone in the other room (wife asleep) I would check my settings. If I remember I will post them in the morning. Most of them have not been changed though.

I have those drivers installed AND playback issues. But you should install them anyway.
I'm working out some methods of encoding at the moment and will get back to you. I tried to fight the transcoding, but am starting to give in. The device just doesn't have a lot of headroom as far as playing videos, with currently available players.
Any other thoughts on this or are we all just waiting on the next Core Player update?
Did installing the drivers help you at all?

[Q] Youtube HD playback on 3.1

I haven't had a chance to update mine, does the 3.1 fix the issue with the Youtube HD video playback? it wasn't smooth on the 3.0.1.

That's disappointing..
YouTube app is much smoother, but it seems to pause a lot for buffering. So what's worse, pauses for buffering or choppy playback and missed frames?

same here on the FIOS which makes me wonder how much of the choppy/buffering problems are based on wifi speed/strength.
So looks like the HD playback in the App is no longer choppy, I think it's good enough for me. Hope there is a fix for the x264 playback, but I guess I am asking for too much.
Just getting a chance to test this.

Can anyone tell me where on the app you can select the multiple resolutions that you see in the browser window. I don't know if I was watching the 720 or the 1080.

i meant that perhaps signal strength and speed is probably whats giving people issues while streaming.
say for instance, if theyre trying to stream videos off a motel 6 wifi vs their own home service
what I meant was I have fios and no buffering issues which leads me to believe the person with buffering issues has a **** connection.

I've noticed the buffering to be an issue with both 3.0.1 & 3.1. Not sure what the cause is, I don't think it's my network as it'll be stuck buffering one moment, then the next moment it has no issues.

I've seen this happen on my TF and on desktop and phone. It's an issue with youtube I think. Sometimes the intertubes get full. Reloading or waiting out the congestion is the only thing to do.
Also, no stuttering or lag of any kind on my TF as of 3.1. This puppy finally runs like it should.
I recently upgraded the latest (3.1) version and the Youtube's HD videos works smoothly. Not any jerks or continuous loading.
Has anyone noticed on the Youtube app that full screen orients only one way (with the Asus logo on top left). Even if I have the screen turned with the Asus logo on the bottom right, as soon as I hit the full screen, it will show upside down. This is with the Youtube app.

[Q] Slow video stream?

So i got my eeepad and its great but i find video streaming a little slow.
I am using emit and love it, streams great on my Galaxy Nexus phone and my dad's Samsung Galaxy tablet but on my eeepad i get some issues with stream quality. The high quality setting for dual core devices is a little laggy, but otherwise good quality. I tried lowering the settings but the lagginess continued throughout all the profiles, just with a lower video quality.
Speedtest.net on the devices show similar results so i'm not sure it's that and its all running on a n network so i don't think i should have trouble streaming video.
I was wondering if this was an issue or if anyone knew a fix to stop the lag.
I have broken my charger so battery has been low (<20%) could this be the issue? A new one is on it's way anyway.
What version of FW are you on, ICS for the transformers is having issues with flash/video playback and wifi. It could be either of those things.
You could stop it by rooting and installing a custom kernel with the fixes
I'm on 4.03 at the moment. But that sounds exactly like my problem. Thanks for the info.
As mentioned I am missing the charger for now so i will look into that as soon as it arrives.
You can try the PERI one-click root tool in my signature for an easy route, that's about the only thing you can do as of now though, untill ASUS fully fixes their firmware.
I'll be waiting a bit anyway. As mentioned no current charger but I will keep it in mind when the time comes

Twitch streaming performance

So I searched the forum for 'Twitch' and wasn't able to find anything, and I'm seeing spotty answers to whether or not the MK 808/9 can handle streaming from Twitch.tv. I'm OK with fiddling with firmware as well as going Ethernet in order to get the results I'm after, but can anyone give me some real world information on how well these devices handle streaming from Twitch at 720 or 1080? I've spent a lot of time looking for solid answers to this question and I just can't seem to find anything.
u can watch 720p without a problem, but 1080p doesnt work.. too much stuttering
i increased cpu from 1200mhz to 1416mhz and its getting better, but unwatchable (maybe it works with 1.6ghz, but u will need a good cpu cooler, dunno )
so... if the twitch user streams in 1080p (or even higher) and u cant change the resolution.. you´ve got a problem.
iam using finless 1.7c firmware with 2dark4u 1080p Kernel, but im thinking in few months u can watch 1080p without a problem.
btw. 1080p Youtube videos work absolutly fine.
Edit: im using MK808

Laggy videos at 1080p 30fps

I have some serious lag when shooting at 1080p 30fps. My device simply cannot make smooth videos, each of them is laggy. At least 1 frame always drops after some seconds. When I started using it 1 month ago, it wasn't the same, but now I just can't record videos with this phone. Anyone else experiencing that?
This phone has just stopped being capable of making videos - again. The situation is even worse than it was in the beginnings. The Miui 12 update brought back all the laggy stuttering, i just simply cannot shoot useful videos with the phone now, again. As it was mentioned before, it was usable in the last months - as much as i can remember, the problem was solved by the A10 update. But now, this phone is a crap when it comes to creating videos. (Both 1080p and 4k 30 fps.)
I've really had enough, f*ck xiaomi and this crap phone, they sell it as a cameraphone, and still, in 2020 this device is unable of making real motion picture. Their update policy is shocking, how can an upgrade ruin a basic function like that? It is ridicolous that xiaomi is unable to build phones that are capable of shooting smooth videos. I'm really tired of it, time to say this company ciao, and evade their phones - whatever they promise in their ads.

Also opening the camera app and switching from photo to video takes toooo damn long. Like 3/5 seconds. Insane.

Am on 11.0.12.0 and 30fps is fine, no frame drop, i hope what you mean by laggy is not the stabilizing motion in effect when recording. (The counter movement by the image stabilization to prevent shake, it sometimes looks like if the video is delayed in movement)

No, it is simply laggy. Maybe I should upload a sample somewhere.
I tried to play these videos on different PC-s using different media player programs, but still, most of them are laggy. And my Mi Note 10 simply can't play its own videos without lag/framedrop, no matter which resolution/fps I record at. Is it playing its own videos smoothly for you?
(In some videos, it is just a playback error (which is not OK at all), because when I play them on my PC, they're OK. But in most of the videos, there is lag, framedrops at the same time, no matter, which program I use.)
Here are some short samples recorded at 1080p 30 fps. No matter, in which media player program/app I play them, no matter on which PC or which smartphone, there are lags (or framedrops) at the same moments of the videos. 9 out of 10 videos are like these or worse when I shoot with Xiaomi Mi Note 10 unfortunately. Is it just me, or does anyone else experience these problems?
1.: https://youtu.be/hkVcvmzvW2w
Some lag while turning around, especially in the first half of the video.
2.: https://youtu.be/EwePHqHtF4w
It can be clearly seen in the first part of the video, it's like if it stopped for some moments.
3.: https://youtu.be/N9Ceo6_8s7E
Wait until the 2nd half of the video, when it turns back, there are some major lags.

I also have the same issues in particular in 4K photography - really disappointing I bought the phone because of the camera and it was a bad choice. And most YouTube reviewers have hidden the problem because they are profiting from sales - shame !!

Exactly, same here. Now I regret buying it, I should sell it.
In 4K and 1080p 60 fps it's even worse, much much worse. These functions are simply useless.
i just hope i can replicate your issue. but i can't. recording went just fine. probably something buggy in rom, kernel, app, not sure.
I always use 60fps so it's not a problem for me but it's just the 4k which is not smooth at all but I don't have noticable stutter issues or frame drops. Hopefully we can see a stable 4K soon. This is a sample of my device.

I have the same issue since i got the phone, it lags in video recording while panning whoever it feels like, i have experienced lag in 1080p 30fps and 60fps and in 4k is worse, i hope xiaomi updates this, btw using the Gcam mod from Urnyx i can record without lags but using only the main camera.
