Laggy videos at 1080p 30fps - Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Questions & Answers

I have some serious lag when shooting at 1080p 30fps. My device simply cannot make smooth videos, each of them is laggy. At least 1 frame always drops after some seconds. When I started using it 1 month ago, it wasn't the same, but now I just can't record videos with this phone. Anyone else experiencing that?

This phone has just stopped being capable of making videos - again. The situation is even worse than it was in the beginnings. The Miui 12 update brought back all the laggy stuttering, i just simply cannot shoot useful videos with the phone now, again. As it was mentioned before, it was usable in the last months - as much as i can remember, the problem was solved by the A10 update. But now, this phone is a crap when it comes to creating videos. (Both 1080p and 4k 30 fps.)
I've really had enough, f*ck xiaomi and this crap phone, they sell it as a cameraphone, and still, in 2020 this device is unable of making real motion picture. Their update policy is shocking, how can an upgrade ruin a basic function like that? It is ridicolous that xiaomi is unable to build phones that are capable of shooting smooth videos. I'm really tired of it, time to say this company ciao, and evade their phones - whatever they promise in their ads.

My MIUI is Global 11.0.12.0 Stable

Same here.
Also opening the camera app and switching from photo to video takes toooo damn long. Like 3/5 seconds. Insane.

Am on 11.0.12.0 and 30fps is fine, no frame drop, i hope what you mean by laggy is not the stabilizing motion in effect when recording. (The counter movement by the image stabilization to prevent shake, it sometimes looks like if the video is delayed in movement)

No, it is simply laggy. Maybe I should upload a sample somewhere.
I tried to play these videos on different PC-s using different media player programs, but still, most of them are laggy. And my Mi Note 10 simply can't play its own videos without lag/framedrop, no matter which resolution/fps I record at. Is it playing its own videos smoothly for you?
(In some videos, it is just a playback error (which is not OK at all), because when I play them on my PC, they're OK. But in most of the videos, there is lag, framedrops at the same time, no matter, which program I use.)

Here are some short samples recorded at 1080p 30 fps. No matter, in which media player program/app I play them, no matter on which PC or which smartphone, there are lags (or framedrops) at the same moments of the videos. 9 out of 10 videos are like these or worse when I shoot with Xiaomi Mi Note 10 unfortunately. Is it just me, or does anyone else experience these problems?
1.: https://youtu.be/hkVcvmzvW2w
Some lag while turning around, especially in the first half of the video.
2.: https://youtu.be/EwePHqHtF4w
It can be clearly seen in the first part of the video, it's like if it stopped for some moments.
3.: https://youtu.be/N9Ceo6_8s7E
Wait until the 2nd half of the video, when it turns back, there are some major lags.

I also have the same issues
I also have the same issues in particular in 4K photography - really disappointing I bought the phone because of the camera and it was a bad choice. And most YouTube reviewers have hidden the problem because they are profiting from sales - shame !!

Exactly, same here. Now I regret buying it, I should sell it.
In 4K and 1080p 60 fps it's even worse, much much worse. These functions are simply useless.

i just hope i can replicate your issue. but i can't. recording went just fine. probably something buggy in rom, kernel, app, not sure.

I always use 60fps so it's not a problem for me but it's just the 4k which is not smooth at all but I don't have noticable stutter issues or frame drops. Hopefully we can see a stable 4K soon. This is a sample of my device.

Forgot to mention that 4K/30fps works great on ULTRACAM!

I understand you have the Mi Note 10? Do you recommend it?
Video is not laggy? Other bugs?

I have the same issue since i got the phone, it lags in video recording while panning whoever it feels like, i have experienced lag in 1080p 30fps and 60fps and in 4k is worse, i hope xiaomi updates this, btw using the Gcam mod from Urnyx i can record without lags but using only the main camera.

[Q] I/O-speed improvement

So, the I/O-speed often is the bottleneck for the tf300. I knew this already, just like the most of you probably. It didn't bother me too much, as I didn't have a lot of issues because of it.
Lately I did start to encounter problems with it, because I started to use my tablet for streaming video. The result is that I can watch about 30 seconds of video, have to wait 30 seconds while the device is buffering, can watch another 30 seconds of video, wait for buffering again, and so on.... It seems the device is not capable to buffer while playing video. Well, you can imagine I don't have the patience nor the wish to watch any video till the end under these circumstances.
As I see and know that the network connection is just fine for streaming video capabilities (it works fine on my laptop and phone for instance), I am pretty sure the problems I have on the tf300 are due to the I/O-issues.
Now my specific question is: is there any solution or workaround to avoid lagging video streams because of these I/O speed issues?
And on a wider spectrum: Is there any way to improve overall I/O-speed performance on the tf300?
Any help is much appreciated.
FYI: My tf300 is rooted, but not unlocked. I prefer to keep it this way, unless there is no option at all to get around these issues without an unlocked device.

Those youtube videos don't play well on my tf300 either, I always have to 'untick' the HD or HQ button in the videos to play them smoothly.
Do you run stock Android with latest OTA updates on your tf300?
I do run stock indeed. Only rooted.
Well, I'll give it a try by completely factory-resetting my tf300. I doubt it will make a difference, but without trying I'll never know.
Resurrecting I see this thread was never resolved, and if the streaming was addressed elswhere I couldn't find it.
Picked up this tablet recently, 4.2.1 rooted stock. Youtube streaming is unwatchable in HD - not enough buffer, but handles HQ or lower fine. Can stream 1080P fine on my desktop, and HD fine on my Razr I and Arc S. Which makes me question, why the inability to cache enough of the video on the TF300T?
Learn from linux
Hmm I stumbled across a few articles, how to improve linux for netbooks. Some involved lowering the writeback to get better I/O-speeds while batterylife gets improved. Maybe one could figure out how much of this applys with Android and the eMMC drive in our tablet and tweak it accordingly.
Best regards.
Kalle.
I had no issues with surdu_petru's overclocked kernels, got around 10000 i.o (sio scheduler) in quadrant, in saying that that kernel got me a score of 7100 on quadrant overall which must be close to the best for tegra 3s?

Issues with camera when recording videos.

I have issues with the focus when recording videos indoors even when lights are on, outside in daylight I don't have such issue. When I point it on my arm and start recording, it gets all blurry and have trouble focusing even when I'm clicking on the screen so it can focus at the specific area. When I use pro mode and manually focus then everything is alright but that can't be the solution as I'll have to adjust it all the time.
I installed "open camera" and it works great so I don't know what could be wrong with the stock app.
Thanks.

In 1080p60fps is much worse and it kinda turns yellowish too. I don't think it's a filter cause outside in daylight its perfect.

How to Fix Video Stutter

Has anyone here experienced any video stutter when recording? I noticed this in my XZ when recording 30fps Intelligent Active steadyshot. I'm not on Stamina Mode so I don't know what's causing it. I'm on the latest version of Nougat btw.
Sent from my F8331 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yes I also have the same problem. Is there any fix for this problem as it is very annoying.
I have this also on latest Nougat :/
Same here both USA and Japan version
Same here. Anyone tried factory reset?
Is it like severe stuttering or like a lower framerate viewfinder than it should be? Like it's not smooth motion? Because if it's the second one, I see it as well, but mostly when Object tracking is enabled. I usually shoot in 60 FPS so it's less noticable. That being said, while shooting, there is some stuttering in both 30 and 60 FPS, but when I watch the videos they are fine and as they should be, it's only the viewfinder that stutters sometimes a bit, I guess because of the processing. Disabling Auto scene mode might help as well.
It might be that Sony lowered viewfinder framerate to reduce cpu usage and battery drain while recording.
Do your videos also come out stuttering or are they fine when watching them?
Same is in recording 4K, there is some stutter while recording, but the video comes out smooth and fine.
This issue seems similar to stuttering issue when watching some movie rips, for some reason some lower resolution lower bitrate movies stutter, but watching FullHD and 4K works fine without stuttering, but while doing that all cpu cores throttles up and get utilized properly. In the movies where it stutters, only two cores get bumped up clock speed, while the other two mostly stay at lowest clocks. It could be a codec issue, where it doesn't use all he cores as it should when it should. https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/help/platinum-xz-rev-2-0-video-playback-t3576686
In general, lately, Sony has been heavily optimizing their OS in favor of preserving battery life, but in some cases they went too restrictive and conservative to a point that the chipset isn't working at its full power when you need it to.
I noticed it too, first few seconds of taking a video then it becomes smooth again...

Right. Upon further testing, I noticed it happens more ofthen in lower light conditions or when switching from low light to good light when it changes exposure and brigthness. It's mostly OK when in good light.
So it seems like the processing of the video recording, the auto adjustments of the scene and object tracking is causing some framerate drops in the viewfinder, but it really doesn't concern me as long as the final video turns out smooth as it should.

There is a bug in the current Nougat build causing stutter/lag when recording video. I am experiencing it on my Xperia X Performance as well.

I just cleared the camera data do I'm shooting on default settings.

Disable the beauty mode and it should be bit better. This over exposed thing has been notified to honor officials and they said they will inform their R&D to resolve this
The issue was not limited to the images taken using the front camera. It includes the video quality of the front camera - which doesn't have a Beauty mode.
They received an update just now, but it is just limited to security patches and voLTE and they've advised me that there was no fix on the camera that came with it.

Replace Thermal paste? (with liquid metal)

Hey there :]
My trusty OnePlusOne is unable to properly record anything above a 480p video without dropping frames. It gets really bad with 4k especially, where after 10 seconds it drops below 10 fps.
The reason is the CPU hitting 75°C under load rather and throttling to hell. Below 800mhz with 4k recordings even. (With any recording app BTW)
Can this be improved somehow?
I already succsefully replaced the battery and wondered: Can the Oneplus One be disassembled to reveal the CPU die? Would replacing the TIM with Liquid Metal improve things?
Have you tried a software approach first? New ROM or simply a factory reset. Underclocking would be an option. I wouldn't recommend recording 4k in the first place. It creates huge files and there's no real discernable quality improvement. It's a 2014 device, 4K wasn't even a thing back then.
I doubt it would be feasible to make any cooling improvements on the hardware. I also replaced the battery on a Bacon before and didn't notice much repairability. I guess it could be a fun project though if the phone is disposable to you.
If you really want to know, I'm sure this will answer most of your questions: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/OnePlus+One+Teardown/26484

So far I have been running TugaPower 58.0 (Android 7.1.2, Lineage OS 14.1) 3.4.113-Franco Kernel.
Because of loss of Manual Focus + RAW + 64s exposer I stuck to such an old version of Android. Newer Version always broke manual focus (due to deprecation of camera API v1 or something), which I can't live without^^ Hope bacon camera will work on Android 10...

well i was gonna consider mentioning a rom only cause i figured you were on a older build, cause the previous member had mentioned that our oneplus dont support 4K, and it does i just wanted to help you point out even regarding back to 2014, you just gotta know what your doing and looking for.Besides i wanted to stop you before you opened up the oneplus, unless something is broken and needed to be replaced. It mostly involves a rom that has camera bugs, and ive been on almost every rom we have for us and nothing gives the best superb to anything except the one i had ported over to us.But by now lineage 17.1 is still in buggy stages, but im sure your 4k issue will be resolved.

Well technically, they do, even if the image itself is barely better. Using a denoiser like NeatVideo does a superb job at producing a crispy clean 1080p out of the noisy 4k, by denoising with the noise pattern at 4k. ( As explained here https://youtu.be/2oUFiNb7DpM?t=190 )
That's the reason I love recording in 4k, even if the device does not actually give better quality.

So happy to see fully manual ISO, 64s second exposure, RAW Photos AND manual focus all working fine.
I'm really surprised to see core parking happening apparently. With the Android 7 ROM on the home screen every core downclocked to 200mhz, but I don't recall them being marked as parked. All the other cores are parked and only 1 with 200mhz is left. facinating.
Video recording is indeed better behaved. But 4k is still a no go. After 20 seconds I reach 75°C and the throtteling starts. But it takes another minute, until the cores drop below 1Ghz. Gotta stick with 1080p. Luckily this seems to work now without frame drops. It takes 1 minute of 1080p to reach 75°C, but only 3 Cores are under load, as opposed to 4k with 4 Cores. The throttling is only mild and after 2 minutes the video still has no frame drops. 1080p it is.
