would like to hear from the people who own this unit.
interested in one for my benz.
hi
use this post to collect information about this unit!
thanks
I own this device and the previous classic model. The classic model was junk. The Smart is amazing. Absolutely no crashes, great audio and nav. I would definitely suggest installing one. It runs on 2.3.7. The only complaint is it doesn't include Google accounts or any gapps. I have successfully installed the Google framework and managed to get google music, maps, and plus working. Play store functions but crashes on downloads. Google talk crashes immediately. I would like to figure out how to get into the recovery and possibly flash the gapps to see if this fixes the problem. Anyway...super happy with the out of the box product.

Same experce here. Owned the classic in a previous car and just installed the smart this week (including the Unika canbus interface). Steering wheel buttons work perfect and the unit is supersmooth. Multi tasks really well (music, tomtom, radar trap alerts) and also pairs really nicely with my phone. Only have to convince my galaxy nexus to automatically tether bluetooth internet connections, but a GNex problem not the smarts.
No crashes to date (with a lot of sideloaded apps), great soundquality (if maybe not too loud, but loud enough in my alfa 159) and equalizer possibilities and the buttons work instantly, a problem that the classic had (laginess with the unika interface).
Thanks for your review.
So TomTom can be used without problem?
If you receive a bluetooth call during Navigation what happens
Is possible to install widget to have a result like this? (http://www.pioneer.eu/images/products/carnavigationpackage/pioneer/avic-f320bt-blue_thumbnail.jpg) using beautiful widget in example?
there is a night mode?
Last question: is possibile to switch mute fastly?
Thanks in advance....but i can't find more information about this unit!
I sideloaded adw launcher and have no issues customizing the home screen. Im currently testing just about any app I can....subsonic, opera, pandora, dolphin...work perfectly. Ill try some widget apps and report. This unit has a lot of promise...
I'm going to get one of these too for my Pathfinder... as soon as I can find someone to sell me one. I've never had this much trouble even getting in contact with someone at a stereo shop...

Do you mean the steering wheel control peripheral that is included with the head unit, or is this thing compatible with controls that are built in to the steering wheel from the factory?

Crutchfield is where I would suggest purchasing one. They offer everything you need to install it, harnesses...etc. for free. Plus, they have a no questions asked return policy. If you have factory steering wheel controls you will need to purchase the UNIKA controller from parrot. It has seamless integration. I don't recall the price.

Haven't received a call during navigation yet, good question. I remember using my smartphone as nav and getting called 5 minutes before I arrived, navigating small streets and getting lost by losing directions. Tomtom works without a glitch, very fast and smooth, albeit that it takes some time to boot.
Widgets seem to work, haven't tested a lot yet.
I'm not sure what you mean with switch "mute"? There is no specific mute button, but a pause button which will kill the radio or mp3s playing. Switching between inputs is very fast too (click music -> whichever source you need).
Night mode is switched automatically and has a few options: car iso-lead (if it has lights in the iso lead), unika interface (this is the canbus interface for steering wheel controls and various other info like reversing lights etc. Should even support park distance control in the future as stated in parrots dev forum), and also GPS using sunlight hours.

There is no remote control included, just the radio, the leads and the usb-gps receiver. What I meant is that if you buy the additional Unika interface, this can be configured to listen to the cars resistive (old school) or canbus steering wheel messages and deliver them to the parrot. Added functionality of the canbus option is that is can read more messages on the canbus like when the car is in reverse, lights etc.

Ah, so that's what the UNIKA interface is, thanks!
FYI, looks like they're sold out at Parrot... looks like I'll have to hunt around for it.

Hi,
I also bought one and installed it in my car. At the moment the device works fine. But I also want to install the play store with a working google account to install my legaly bought license of Navigon. Did someone manage to get the PlayStore and a google account to work?
I'd also be interested in root, a custom rom and recovery mode. Are there any plans in this direction?
Regards

Welcome
Looks like you may have got the last one for now lol.
Mine should be delivered tomorrow (maybe today - fingers crossed). UNIKA interface is out for delivery now :victory:
I'm all in for helping out if you need testing. Not too good at coding yet.. still learning, but I'll help out where I can!
Got my smart this weekend and have been tinkering all week long in my breaks at work. Replaced an an original Asteroid(now called Classic). I had no issues with the classic originally. Didn't like how it was limited to android 1.5, and the non-standard display and controls limited apps that would work. Eventually It developed issues related to heat. Could be 90 out, but my car sitting in the parking lot apparently got the inside of the dash too hot and the radio would over heat, POP all the speakers and lock up till it cooled down. After weeks of battling back and forth with support they shipped me a refurbished unit. Connected it, made sure it was all working and did not have the same issues (yet) and then pulled it out and put it on ebay. Using the cash I bought the smart and have not looked back.
Android 2.3, standard interface and touch controls. So far every app works. some things will causes app crashes, but very few and far between. Installed google framework, Maps/Nav (and used the make offline feature to get maps of pretty much all of LA county and the inland empire and everything in between offline). Pandora, SiriusXM, Spotify, Torque(tho i can't pair my ELM due to non 0000 pair code) and Trapster. Everything working great. Lets you set custom backgrounds and such just like standard android which is nice for a customization feature for a headunit.
Bluetooth has been working nicely to my SGS3 on sprint. Using wifi tether treve mod for internet connectivity.
How about going from ODBii > Smart via USB cable instead of bluetooth?
Does Torque support USB?
I found a hint on the parrot developer zone how to adb the parrot asteroid smart, if this is connected to your computer via usb. You need a login to the developer zone, so I post the plain text here. I hope there is someone, who can and will use this information for root, custom rom, add google account and all the other nice things .

Developing on an ASTEROID target
If you have an ASTEROID device, you can test and debug your application directly on it. It requires that your ASTEROID device is connected to your computer using a USB cable via the device micro USB port.
For Windows users:
To be recognized by your computer and by Eclipse IDE, you need to define your device as a Composite ADB Inerface:
Locate the Android SDK folder (we call it <android_sdk>)
Go to <android_sdk>/extras/google/usb_driver
Open "android_winusb.inf" file
Look for the list of predefined ADB interfaces blocks such as "Google NexusOne" and add the folowing block:
; ParrotASTEROID
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0451&PID_D102&MI_01
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0451&PID_D102

%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0451&PID_D102&MI_01
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0451&PID_D102&MI_01
Simply restart your adb with the command "kill-server"
That's it !
If you are encountering issues while installing your device, you may refer to the following forum post
For Linux users:
Create a file in /etc/udev/rules.d named parrot.rules with this content:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="19cf", ATTR{idProduct}=="1000", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0451", ATTR{idProduct}=="d100", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"
This file supports ASTEROID Smart, Tablet and Mini devices
It will permits to have you device accessible by adb (or flash) using the USB connector without running adb usb in root
It is not compatible with ADB over Ethernet.
So, if exist you must remove this line in init.parrot.sh "setprop service.adb.tcp.port 5555"

I've already been into it with ADB. As far as I can tell there is no stock recovery. I've tried several attempts to root the thing, to no avail. Going to fire up Linux and see if I can make any headway.

[Q] Using gps-500 with tablet?
I have a gps-500 (a usb based GPS receiver) from when my laptop worked and wondered if some guru out there found a way to make it useful with the tablet. For the price, $19 or so to purchase the 'sensor', it would make the tablet become a cool GPS for any others where tethering is not an option. i'm using a bt-1000x travel recorder, it's a bluetooth gps, i't working great, all i have to do is use a special program on the gtab so it knows about the gps, works perfectly with google maps

I have a BU-353 usb gps receiver and haven't gotten it to work yet. also haven't found (so far) any threads in the Gtab forums talking about if usb gps work or not with the modified firmwares.
Nothing working for mine so far. I had looked at this, wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Navit_on_Android it "works", as in 'it wont crash', no maps show though. I have not yet posted any questions or such to see if anyone knows a way to make the program take its input from my gps receiver. Though it may be as simple as linking the programs expected input device to /dev/USB (or whatever the proper syntax is) The nasty thing is I had to get the Google Market working on the dev kits virtual device so I could use the virtual device to download a supplementary apk which was required by Navit (a text to speech apk) ...(the market via my tablet couldn't find it, or GPSTether either) And found this as well, still no joy androlib.com/android.application.com-gpstether-xAzq.aspx I'm so new to all this android stuff, 3 weeks, but I'm having a wonderful time playing and experimenting Regards and have fun, Fuzzy
Was there any more info on this? I just bought one of these GPS units and can't get it to work.
[Q] Need an Android app to be developed for $
I need an Android app to be develpoed (for money, of course). Where should I post my request?
You could try freelancer.com, a quick search said "419 freelancers found in Android"
depending on how complicated it would need to be and how much free time you have you could try to build ti yourself, i think Google just released a new app building platform
Grosskum said: depending on how complicated it would need to be... Click to expand... Click to collapse I'm not sure how to rate it by complicity: I need an app which will let me work with an Android device via bluetooth mouse and emulate a pinch-to-zoom function with a mousewheel. Requirements: 1. emulate pinch-to-zoom function with a mousewheel; 2. custom cursor (transparent circle) and, desirable, its custom animation (when doing pinch-to-zoom); 3. the above functions should work in all opened applications (e.g. Angry Birds). Useful info: the latest Android versions already support HID-devices (checked on Samsung Galaxy Tab and a bluetooth mouse), but mouse can't do pinch-to-zoom (the mousewheel is used only for scrolling). Also, devices with an advanced docking station (like ASUS Transformer) have a touchpad with a multi-touch support (e.g. pinch-to-zoom). So, it is possible to send multi-touch commands to an Android device from another device.
Android Car Device
There is an Android 2.2 800Mhz 256MB 8GB 6,2" TFT CAR DVD on sale (about 800 USD with delivery to door in Russia) that I have bought recently and after some software installations it does deliver what I have wanted to have in the car. Nevertheless there are a few major complaints to its performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx53a6N7_ws As well there are several other minor things that would be great to change if possible. If there is someone interested and able to cook a custom ROM for this device - I can send this device for free as a gift and for experiments. We really want a good ROM for this CA-Fi Car Stereo and the guy's in China don't seem caring enough. I will check this thread once in a while and provide contact details for anyone interested in developing this device. It is very close to being a great thing for a CAR! I have updated my email in the XDA profile so you can as well use this option to contact me. I Have a ROM update file that came from the device vendor (dealer). I can send it out for revision. The way to install this rom on the car stereo is to extract files to the root of a microSD card, insert it, switch off the device, then, while holding the screen tapped, power on – the device starts an install mode. When finished it asks for screen calibration and restarts with a new rom as after a hard reset (erases everything). ******************* I understand you if you only need to have music playing while driving, as well as some people who still prefer using monochrome cell phones. This is a matter of needs. Regarding the sound quality of this particular CA-Fi device its surprisingly fine. I use its 4x45W out lines conneted directly to car OEM speakers (its a Chrysler PT) and the subwoofer RCA out channel connected via a 1KW Kenwood amplifier to a large Polk Audio woofer. With the available in this device GEQ and Bass/Treble settings the unit provides perfectly sharp and clear sound in the high+mid ranges for the OEM speakers that in company with the powerful sub make a really impressive rich and clear sound scene with no distortion at any volume. This sound setup is very easy and efficient. Honestly, to my hearing it is not lacking comparing to my previous JVC Mosfet 192/24 DAC car stereo that was routed through amplifiers for all channels to Focal speakers instead of the OEM... That was too much trouble for the gained advantage. Again, depending on the needs. Trully - the sound of this Android Radio is fine, a sound of a branded Hi-Fi car stereo. And if you had a Win7 Car PC setup that is quite complicated to arrange you should agree that this easy one-box Android PC solution is a great idea. It provides the music and all the tablet PC advantages. It's really nice after switching on the ignition to hear from your car that you have a new e-mail arrived, and enjoy other goodies like that. ---------- Post added at 08:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:23 PM ---------- Quote: Originally Posted by leppie And there is the Parrot as well. yes, I considered the Parrot, but found it limited for modifications and with a too small screen. For example, mine had GPS only in WinCE and 3G only in Android - so I couldnt have the Navigation system working along with traffic updates.... this spoiled everything for me. PS Important to know that CA-Fi offer a few dozens of versions of the same model with different front panels to match many of original car dashboards without the need of modifying the panels - the device fits in as a replacement for the OEM unit! As well for those who think that there are many different Android car stereos to choose from - this may be the same model with different front facing. Like all of theese are the same device:

Anyone with one of these units, could you answer these questions: 1) Do steering wheel controls work in Android, or only in WinCE? 2) Can you listen to the radio (WinCE I assume) and run an Android app simultaneously? So say listen to the radio and also run the Waze gps app with voice prompts. How does it handle the audio mixing? 3) What is the boot time? From ignition to radio playing. I have a pure android unit now but the boot time is slow. I understand WinCE is much faster, and I hope the radio would start playing while the android system is still booting up. Thanks!

Click to collapse The unit is very interesting and powerful, the fact you can't talk with the support is ridiculous because sometimes a problem can go away in 5 minutes of skype talks.. 1) Only in WInCE. But not sure of your question. 2) Yes you can. WinCE have different volume levels (media, radio, phone, video ..) but all the audio in Android environment is streamed in the MEDIA channel of WinCE. You can still control single volumes in Android. This is not so bad, but there is only a problem: music stream doesn't drop down during speech of navigators in Android. 3) Boot time is longer than OEM equipment of corse. First to be ready is WinCE with all the media and canbus sections. Radio (if on before last power off) start immediately. Android double the time. I use it for Sygic Navigator, and Google Maps navigation (the best because always up to date and with real time traffic)

I managed somehow to subscribe and post 3/4 questions on their chinese forum. I obtained a couple of posts from another user (useful for the specific topic), and stop. No one from Newsmy answered in a week. At this point I just have to hope that the Carpad will never break, and take back my unanswered questions. For this reasons I strongly discourage anyone from outside China to buy a product newsmy. In Italy I am a moderator in a forum community of the same vehicle of mine. There was a lot of waiting for the reviews on this product, others would follow me to the purchase of Carpad probably. Now it will not happen.

Hi Summer, my unit came from tradesolution.hk, images and serial number in attachment. I have differents issues, here are some: RADIO SECTION-> - 80% of the FM stations I get them in MONO; - FM "AF" function, is not funcional. I travel to the same cities every days, and with others radio I can keep the same radio stations, with CARPAD I lose the signal. Before I listened always two or three stations and frequencies changed without me lose the signal. With Carpad not happen. - RDS never received any stream, even if the symbol appears on display; (FM OEM antenna is connected, in fact, by disconnecting the cable, I do not find any station) - I cannot scan FM with binded phisical key: only via touchscreen, and this is really useless; OTHERS-> - I do not have the rear parking sensors, but I have aftermarket rear camera: I correctly get the image on the unit, but without sensors I get a continuos annoying beep and I cannot disable in any way. make a software way to DISABLE it; - the quality of the microphone in a phone call is very very LOW.. make a software way to allow the use of an auxiliary microphone; - backlight sometime is off, although in the rest of the dashboard is turned on; ... I have other problems to list, but for the moment I stop. let's see what happens. I consider regrettable the fact that the service contact on skype has abandoned me without answer. And from your forum you have locked my account after I asked a few questions.

He told me that the DVD player must be configured with the newest firmware of the player and with the software vehicleconfig otherwise the can-bus module of the player cannot work properly with my car. My car is a ford focus 1.6 tdci 2010. Somebody can help me please?? Thanks in advance! Roberto

Upgraded Android with instruction and image file given: is it normal ? I have lost Android Box?? :edit NEVERMIND! Upgrade succeeded! This 4.4 Android version is beautiful configured this way on the carpad and I can see a better UI and user experience. Good work for this upgrade. In the WinCE section instead, there is still an open issue regarding RDS and its related AF (alternate frequencies) function. This function allow user to travel km and km keeping the same Radio Station tuned. This function is responsible to scan in the background for alternative frequencies of the selected station and transparently switch. Unfortunately carpad is currently sold as "RDS enabled" but is not fully enabled. Hope in the future the manufacturer will update this part too. Many thanks to Summer. I am going to pass your skype contact other clients I know who are not fully satisfied with the product. I hope you will want to give them some good advice.

I cant use maps and music at the same window. I attached a video to show you how it looks. No Split-Screen design for some reason. Maybe its related to android 10? my questions are: 1. How can I make android auto to work regular? As I see in the pictures in the play store? 2. How can I force android auto to work on full screen mode? 3. Is there an update to android 11/12/13 for my machine? Im running android 10. Moreover, I can not find the check for updates options any ideas? also attached the version of the machine thanks
1) Android Auto currently does not support split-screen, only at very few top-market builtin AA screens. So certainly not on these units using a reverse-engineered CarLink apk. Android Auto is kept simple to keep it as safe as possible. 2) You can't. Android auto copies your screen to the head unit (or car builtin in screen). It will be more or less your phone screen. That works nicely on a normal 8" - 13.3" landscape unit, but not on a Tesla style vertical screen. (And why use AA??? You have such a nice screen on a fully functional Android unit) 3) There is no Android 11/12/13 for your unit. If you see Android 11/12/13 units for the FYT7862, then they are fakes. Please first read post # of this thread. Based on your question 3) you did not much reading yet. That is what this forum is for. Learning, not only asking. Last summer Google announced that they are working on a new AA, together with Google Assistant, for many type of screens (as more cars get Tesla style screens) and for split-screen. I have no idea when that gets released and whether the FYT CarLink.apk will support it.

If you simply have your phone connected and play music on your unit in the Music Player via BT, it should simply work. For AA via CarLink I don't know. On my unit I never, ever use AA: what a waste of such an expensive unit with such great funtionality to use it as an AA unit. There are special AA /CarPlay Android units below 100 euros for sale on Amazon and AliExpress, and these do it wirelessly as well. I only use AA in rental cars.

The App on the head unit is a hacked app written by the Chinese so they do not have to pay any royalties/licencing fees. Android Auto is written only for supported Head Units using unhacked software where the maker pays the correct fee. So every change on the Official Android Auto app does not consider what effect it has on a hacked app, so if it stops working you are reliant on the Chinese hackers fixing the hacked app. Hence no reply to your request and why I do not use Android Auto on these units.
