I want to root my Xoom so I can wireless tether from my phone. If I can't do this, I don't even want the Xoom. So, if I root it and I still don't like it(because I still have a few days before I can take it back), is there a way I can get it back to the stock software and all so I can return it? I have the wifi model.
I saw some other posts on this but I wasn't quite clear on whether they would work or not. Some were only for Verizon model and stuff so I wasn't sure.
Thanks.
Why would you want to root the Xoom?
Wouldn't you just be able to connect wi-fi by just allowing your cell phone to output wi-fi signal? I can do this without rooting my Xoom.
Hmmm, I guess I am confused by your question. Do you want to use your phone to act as the modem for your Xoom or your Xoom to act as a modem for your phone?
If it is the latter, that doesn't make much sense. So it must be the former and in that case you would need to have a rooted phone to tether your Xoom to. Your Xoom can then remain stock.
My phone is rooted. I want to use my phone's internet to tether to my Xoom. Wifi tether apps create an ad hoc wifi network for your device to be able to connect to, and if you have not heard, Motorola disabled the functionality to connect to ad hoc networks in the Xoom. Therefore, it must be rooted.

My stock Xoom tethers just fine to my rooted Evo so I guess I wont be of much help.

The hacked Sprint hotspot. Haven't tried wireless tether.
Guess it depend on your phone. Using tether on my incredible and droid 2 it is not in adhoc mode but infrastructure mode. They both show up as wireless g networks not wireless b or adhoc. I also did not know of anything you had to do to a rooted xoom to use the adhoc serivce.

Well that app must run differently than the wireless tether because I know for a fact wireless tether doesn't work unless the Xoom is rooted.
Edit: dch921 what app are you using?

You are incorrect sir. My Xoom Wifi is not rooted. And I have no problem tethering with my Droid Incredible. Not using any app. Just the native Wifi tether built into CM7.

Then I don't know what the problem is because my tether network does not show up when I scan for networks in my Xoom.
I am using cm 7 tether as well.
The newer experimental builds of wireless tether apk supports infrastructure mode. Not sure which phone you are using but here is the link to the site where the project is hosted

Alright i have a backflip so ill try it with that but I also need it to work with an iPhone and I use MyWi 4.0 for that... I don't think it supports infrastructure mode.

This is 100% incorrect. I have a Rooted HTC Evo and use Wireless Tether all the time on my WiFi Xoom ( No root whatsoever).
Yeah i was already corrected on that. Just has to be in infrastructure mode. My phone has an older version without infrastructure mode.
I have an unlocked Atrix with Fido in Canada. I can't use the default Mobile Hotspot because it says I need to get it enabled through AT&T. I've tried Barnacle and WiFi tether and although they work as a wifi hotspot, the Xoom cannot see either network. I think both run as Ad-hoc networks and the Xoom does not see Ad-hoc networks.
Anyone able to get their Xoom connected through their Atrix using a WiFi hotspot? If so, can you let me know how you got it working?
I just setup a hotspot on my Atrix just now. I am posting this connected thru that connect right now!

What did you do to get this to work? Did you use the inbuilt Mobile Hotspot to get it going? Do you have tethering enabled through AT&T?
I am using the built in hotspot. No tethering plan, just added the new apn. When I start up the wifi on the Atrix I get a message about needing to call CS. Then it starts working fine.
Ahh, I presume the new APN is only for AT&T customers. What are folks not on AT&T doing to connect up an Atrix and the Xoom?

Hi
I have the same question but for an Atrix and Xoom UK, connected with Virgin Mobile.
I have two good offers, one from a service provider, the other from Virgin.
My heart would go for the Atrix, but my brain says Samsung Galaxy S2. It is all about compatibility between phone and tablet, and their WiFi hotspot.
Which one to choose? They both come free, but are they compatible?
Atrix-Xoom or Samsung G2-Xoom?
And one more, is the Atrix compatible with macs running OXS 10.5?
Decision, decision..
Thanks
T.

I sold my Atrix and picked up a Samsung GS II. The Atrix had amazing hardware, but I felt the software (Motoblur, crappy firmware and a locked bootloader) were too problematic too deal with. I've had my GS II for over four months and am pretty happy with it.
It works really well as a hotspot for the Xoom.
I want to be able to have my Xoom mifi over droid X - is it possible? Thanks!
It works
Using PDANET!
Im so gleeful! Bluetooth tethering a SUCCESS!

Honestly it depends on the Droid X ROM you're using. I use Liberty, and it doesn't have built in wireless hotspot or (last I checked) a functioning bluetooth tether. So I use apps. I've had a lot of success with Wireless Tether (root required)
But PDANet would work like the above poster mentioned.
I tried setting up bluetooth tether with PDAnet (Sprint Hero and Xoom WiFi) but had no success. Paired, but devices won't connect.
Am I doing something wrong?
Just to add my 2 cents on transfer speed, bluetooth has a transfer speed of 800kbps to 2.1Mbps, Wifi has up to 11Mbps to 54+Mbps, if you have anything above 2.1Mbit on your phone your xoom won't be using it because of the bluetooth limitations.
On another note (I might be wrong) I beleive that the total draw power of the bluetooth chipset is almost identical to Wi-fi so there is no "battery saving" using bluetooth.
Moved to Q&A.
if your rooted you can use wireless tether if not try barnacle in the market, i have used it a long time ago and still hear that it is a good workable program just watch out for charges from your carrier.
yes- you can root your phone and use wifi tether. Works just fine.
Jwb
Does Foxfi wireless tether work well on the Maxx HD. Does VZW have any policy against use of wireless tether by folks with grandfathered unlimited data?

Is there a no root wireless tether that is better than Foxfi?
I think barnacle is. Check the market. I'm rooted, so I either use Wireless Tether or my hacked hotspot.

Yeah it works. Just need to download FoxFi and the add-on from the store and it runs beautifully.

You are 100% wrong. The FCC ordered Verizon to cease charging customers for data tethering and fined them 1.25 million dollars for doing so.
FoxFi should work with out problems for you.

Type FoxFi into the play store, should show up as FoxFi AddOn. It's by the same people, and its a small download.

I was 50% wrong
"The FCC also is saying that Verizon cannot charge customers on tiered data plans the $20 a month tethering fee, but it can charge it for those customers who are on an unlimited data plan. However, Verizon will not actually have a way to determine if customers are using one of these apps, so presumably any Android customer can download one of those apps and tether to their heart’s content."
Glad you pointed that out though, nice lil loophole. I had Verizon for a long time, not anymore though. Might go back some time if I win the lottery or at least make 48k/yr

My 2 cents. I am not rooted yet but foxfi worked flawlessly on my Maxx HD. No need to install any ad-ons. Personally I don't think bozos from VZ will charge you for tethering. Unless you start an adult content server

Are any of you using this with an ipad(2)? I am still having issues when trying to connect my ipad2 (ios6) to foxfi ever since moving to the maxx HD (even after the fix by the dev came out a couple weeks back).
This is what I sent the developer earlier today:
-Foxfi starts up like normal
-It shows up on the SSID list on the ipad
-the ipad connects initially like normal, shows up as a connected device on foxfi
-about 5 or so seconds later, the ipad loses the connection and the SSID disappears from the ipad's wifi list
-foxfi still claims that the ipad is connected until I stop the app
I've tried downloading the Foxfi Addon app as others have mentioned but that does nothing to fix the problem. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the app... restarted my phone...toggled the wifi on the ipad... restarted the ipad to no avail.

Why did you do that? Mine works without it. Does that mean VZW will charge me?
I've used FoxFi on an unlimited data contract pushing 15-20GB for over a year, and have been using it for the past week on my new RMaxxHD with no issues. VeeZeeDub hasn't done anything to stop me.

Same issue here on MAXX HD...with or without FoxFi add-on installed. Never had a problem on my old MAXX, now can't get FoxFi to work on MAXX HD. It worked couple times after multiple reboots of both phone and computer; but usually I can see my hotspot, then will try to connect from my laptop and the hotspot will either disappear from the list or laptop will connect to it but will not go online.
Also, I noticed that download speed on the phone was 22Mbps (via Speedtest) but only 0.6Mbps on laptop when connected via WiFi to RAZR HD hotspot and no Web proxy enabled. I use applications on laptop that need direct connection to Web so setting up a proxy on the browser does not work for me.
Any suggestions/ideas how to get this work on MAX HD?
I was forced to use PDAnet via USB cable for now but it is not convenient for what I am usually doing with my computer.
Barnacle is working for me. Requires root access. I'll try FoxFi again at a later date.
EDIT: This morning I streamed Netflix to my desktop thru Barnacle on my phone for a couple of minutes. And now Barnacle doesn't work either. Something seems fishy here.
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use the the xt926 with the Sapido RB-1733 router in USB tether mode?
I have an unlimited data plan so data usage is not an issue. I just don't want to keep using WiFi tether as the connection resets every now an then. I still want to share my connection with a few other devices as well hence why I'm looking at this router.
If I can't then is there another router that is capable of tethering to my phone via USB and use the phone as a wan connection?
Thanks!

While I can't condone what you're doing, or answer your question, I can offer you this temporary fix.
When Comcast was down for a few days, I used easy tether pro (great for tethering one device, always works, even without root) and bridged the connection to my wireless card in my laptop. This allowed Internet on the laptop and whatever else I needed in the house. Only problem is you gotta have the laptop on at all times.

I'm paying the extra 30 bucks for the right to tether with the stock hotspot/USB tether app. So I am allowed to tether since I'm properly provisioned to do so.
I know I could do that with a computer but I was looking for a low power solution like that router I was looking at. I would rather not have to leave a full blown computer running if I don't have to.

For those of us that kept our unlimited data plans now get unlimited hotspot/tether if we decide to pay for it. This was due to Verizon being sued for their data pricing practices. This is why they know offer their shared data plans which they are no longer allowed to charge you for tethering anymore. However those of us on unlimited data plans still have to pay to have that feature but Verizon now just sells us the ability to tether and not a limited data package for tethering. Hence why there is a thread in the general discussion on how to do an entitlement hack so that you can get away from paying them the extra 30 bucks. I have no intention of rooting my phone or hacking it so I decided to pay them the extra money since I already payed full retail for a phone just to keep my unlimited data plan.
Anyway we are getting off track here.
My question has yet to be answered if it is possible to tether this phone to a Sapido RB-1733 router or not?
Sorry about that. I stand corrected. I was not aware the two were connected. Well shucks. That's really cool. I have lots of reading to do.
You might find some info over at Howard forums. The droid forums here don't seem to have very much activity. I anyway back on track...
