I know the lapdock works with our phone but my question is...Has anyone here, that is on AT&T, been using one of these and received any warnings from them about tethering and being put onto the data plus plan? I have been warned once and I CAN NOT afford to lose my unlimited data plan. I have a chance to get one for dirt cheap and I don't wanna pass this deal up. Really stupid that AT&T limits you while the Verizon and Sprint doesn't. How is this even tethering

when I plugged mine into the lap dock 100 at the verizon store it told me that I wasn't subscribed to the tethering plan and it would only work over WiFi

[Q] Can you Tether without being charged?

I have never Tethered my Samsung Ace to my Asus Pad TF300T before and I have been reserching this feature because I am about to go on holiday.
Before I experimented I asked my ISP (Virgin Mobile) if this was possible. They replied that I could Tether my phone for the princely sum of 50 pence a time.
Now I'm not happy with being charged twice for the same thing when all I want to do is surf on a bigger screen.
Is there any way that I can Tether my phone and tablet without having to pay 50 pence a pop?

If you have root you search the market for wifi tether apps that will let you tether with out the restrictions from your carrier. BEWARE- you will pay for data if you go over your data limit, of course, so keep an eye out.
If you not rooted, it limits you down to unlocking it with your isp, rooting your device(then it doesn't matter because you are rooted), or installing a custom rom with tethering included already(generally comes with root as well).
I'm sure there are more options available but those would seem the most direct route at least...

Isn't 50 p not the normal data tariff ? Thethering uses data.

You can try FoxFi from the Market. It works wonderfully. If you have unlimited data on your phone like I do, then you can just use that to tether to whatever devices you want to using WiFi.

Teathering is patr of your data plan. You can have up to 5 devices hooked up to your phone, but still have to watch out for going over your data plan

you can if you root your phone and install a wifi tether app, like "wifi tether" or "barnacle". however, it will run off your data plan, so if you have unlimited data then yes it is free, but if you have a data cap, you may need to watch how much data you tether.

Are these apps encrypting your traffic? I would think the carriers can detect tethering based off your traffic.

I have been using FoxFi for more than a year now to tether. You don't need to root your phone, and to your carrier, it just looks like data that your phone itself is using. They can see that you are viewing sites with a desktop/tablet User string, but that's it. Unless they really analyze it, they won't know you are using the tethering app.

Have you been caught tethering?

I havent yet, I've been using Tether For Root Users. I tether my friends, my laptop sometimes, and I even tethered my PS3 to play Battlefield, with surprisingly no lag.
No messages/letters from AT&T and I've hit the 2.5 gig mark in 28 days and went over 5 gigs just once

Rogers let's u tether from stock Haha but 5gb isn't bad I usually hit around 9-10 with no tethering

Not yet. I just started using it a lot more than before though. I'm just on the 2 GB plan so if I start going over regularly then I'll probably upgrade to the 5 GB and not worry about it.
By the way, I'm using the stock hotspot app with the mod that comes with Clean ROM LE.

I thought I read somewhere that using the stock tethering app without an AT&T tethering plan is not a good idea - because they can see what you're doing. Folks previously suggested to use a third party tether app, like WiFi Tethering or Barnacle, or something similar. Am I remembering something wrong, or have folks heard that as well?

I could be wrong, but I don't think one option is any more stealth than the other.

ive never been caught. I used 3g for watching lots of youtube videos and stuff like that. 2 or 3GB quite easily but no problem. (Just don't tell my network )

Idk how it works for android but I know a couple of friends that were grandfathered into unlimited plans with their iPhones that got caught..
But if your on a tiered plan what could they do? Bump you up to 5gb? It's not like you'd be forced to hop on that plan..

That's exactly what they do. Of course you can change it back but then you're flagged and will get caught constantly.

If you have your bikini team waiting to greet me, I'm all in (my wife probably not so much ).
As for tethering, I only do it in case of emergency, so no problem so far. I'm on a grandfathered unlimited plan, but I barely go over 3GB a month.

At&t offered me a 5gb plan with free tether. Should i switch to that rather then having the 3gb plan with no tether? My thought is i have wifi, and im on it constantly. But when i take trips back home, having tether would come in handy. I have the free root tether.....but i dont wanna risk getting caught. Thoughts??

50 a month is a lot of money to have access to something you won't use that often. I say use the tethering app for free until you get caught.

I tethered for the first time today for a few hours, probably 400-500 mb. We'll see if I get the dreaded text.

I have tethered shamelessly for years, first on my jailbroken iPhones and now on my One X. I've never gotten caught.
I don't claim to be an expert, but from what I've heard, tethering is tethering. Devs will tell you their apps can hide it somehow, but this is hard to accept given that no one is quite sure how AT&T catches people. I myself have tethered using both hacked native capability and third party apps and didn't see a difference.
It seems to be related to bandwidth, but I've heard of people getting nabbed after tethering just once.
I suspect it's a mix of your data patterns and what you're doing. Once you get on their radar screens its very easy to get caught based on your traffic.
When I tether, I pay close attention to how much data I'm using, and I try to avoid doing anything that would be a dead giveaway, like updating my computer software. I also avoid streaming anything or moving large files; this means disabling autosync functions in things like Dropbox.
I'm a fairly heavy data user, but I always stay below my soft cap (5GB unlimited).
So far this approach has worked for me.

I got that too it offered me 40 bucks for 5GB with tether. Same price without it. So why not. I just use the USB tether when my Internet goes down. Happens often with time warner Cable:-(

no tethering charges here in Canada, at least not Telus anymore. I do like to tether though, I have a PC in my car and when I'm on road trips its nice for the passenger to surf the net. I did almost get caught back in the day though.
I got a call from Telus saying that the system dropped my unlimited data and to call them. so I called and they said there was some error and they would drop the charges that incurred. that was on their old CDMA network at $8/mb

As long as you have >1GB data with Rogers, tethering is free here in Canada. tbaytel offers free tethering on any data plan.
Feel sorry for you 'muricans

I average about 20 gb a month for about 5 years now. Not all tethering though. Alot is actually downloading roms from phone browser. Haven't gotten a single warning about it. But for the last 7 months I've been throttled after I hit 5 gb.

Wireless Tethering

Hi I hope this question is appropriate for this thread. I have an unlimited data plan with Verizon Wireless (I was grandfathered in). I currently root my phone and have access to wireless tethering (using the most recent Carbon Rom). I was streaming the Bruins game on my computer while connected to the wireless tethering on my phone and managed to rack up over 1.3 TB in data usage. My understanding is that since I have the unlimited plan, I cannot be charged for this. Can anyone confirm this? I only ask because this is a significant amount of data over the 2GB generally alotted for a VZW data plan and I don't want to be stuck with thousands of dollars of charges.

If you haven't already, you'll probably just get the 'complimentary' call from Big Red to review your account and make sure you are getting the best services from VZW. Tell them 'no thanks' and not to change a thing. It's a trick to slyly knock grandfathered unlimited users out of their unlimited plans. Unlimited means unlimited... Except for the annoying throttling, which I'm sure you will experience real soon, with over a TB of data. Other than that... You're fine. Stream on!

Any non-root Tether options shake loose after the update??

Just wondering. I never did the unlock as I really just need tether. Wondering if there were any developments in that department.

I feel confident that the FoxFi\PDAnet developers will come through with a solution as they did for the Samsung KitKat devices. A process report would be helpful.

You can always pony up the extra money per month for the officially sanctioned mobile Hotspot feature. You can also use Faveset Klink over USB to a small always-on PC that acts as a wireless router. An Intel NUC is a good example of that. Both of these solutions do not involve paying Verizon any extra money per month, though they may not be 100% kosher as far as the ToS for your unlimited data plan. I went the legit route and signed up for the mobile Hotspot feature. Hurts the wallet but I'll never need to worry about NUCs or the possibility that I'll never be able to root my device and be stuck without a tethering solution.

Easy tether pro has worked since day one. Has bluetooth for wireless but it's not a true wifi hotspot. Better than nothing.

I haven't seen any data. But I've personally experienced the best results using wifi hotspot. Followed by usb, then bluetooth. The last 2 are significantly slower.

My job is providing me with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4" which I should be getting in the next couple of days...but it's WiFi only. They will buy tablets but not data plans and they will only buy WiFi only tablets. So if I want cellular data its up to me. Note: Please don't reply with "why don't you unlock and/or root" because I've already made the decision not to do that.
I am lucky enough to still have an unlimited data plan on my Droid Maxx. I checked out buying a Verizon MiFi device, but that would require a change in my data plan and I would lose unlimited . On a MiFi, I would end up on a 5 GB data plan shared between my phone and the MiFi but my total cost would be only $10 higher than I pay today. On the other hand, tethering is a feature I can turn on without changing data plans - but that's $30 per month. But I mostly only need it when traveling and the feature can be turned on and off at will. I can do the math for myself to decide which is more cost effective. But that leads to my question:
If I pay for tethering, how well does it really work? Does a tethered phone work just as well as the MiFi? Or are there other advantages to the MiFi?

I realize you are asking a specific question and I am not answering that, but wanted to throw something out you may not have considered:
You can buy a used Verizon 4G LTE mifi off ebay for $30.
Your unlimited data plan is associated with the sim in your Maxx.
The mifi takes a sim too. Size adapters are easy to find on ebay or Amazon.
I'll let you connect the dots.

Hmmmm. That's a very interesting article and I was completely unaware of the issues it raises. Only problem is that without the SIM card, my Droid Max becomes mostly a useless brick...or does it it? I found this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvQ6tyWKXbg
But then the Droid Max would always need a WiFi Connection. When I get home I'm going to try out the app mentioned in the video above on my old Og Droid I still have laying around. It's not activated on Verizon but it still works via WiFi.....

I would look at this solution as disabling the Maxx to use the sim in a mifi, just to keep it simple. When out of a case, the sim in the Maxx is easy to access. This may not work for you but is a cheap workaround for me and my non-rootable phone (I have a Maxx too) when I occasionally travel and can do without the phone for hours at a time. Again, just another option to consider if it fits your particular requirements.
