Honestly it depends on the Droid X ROM you're using. I use Liberty, and it doesn't have built in wireless hotspot or (last I checked) a functioning bluetooth tether. So I use apps. I've had a lot of success with Wireless Tether (root required)
But PDANet would work like the above poster mentioned.
I tried setting up bluetooth tether with PDAnet (Sprint Hero and Xoom WiFi) but had no success. Paired, but devices won't connect.
Am I doing something wrong?
Just to add my 2 cents on transfer speed, bluetooth has a transfer speed of 800kbps to 2.1Mbps, Wifi has up to 11Mbps to 54+Mbps, if you have anything above 2.1Mbit on your phone your xoom won't be using it because of the bluetooth limitations.
On another note (I might be wrong) I beleive that the total draw power of the bluetooth chipset is almost identical to Wi-fi so there is no "battery saving" using bluetooth.
Moved to Q&A.
if your rooted you can use wireless tether if not try barnacle in the market, i have used it a long time ago and still hear that it is a good workable program just watch out for charges from your carrier.
yes- you can root your phone and use wifi tether. Works just fine.

Hoping someone can help with tethering a cell phone with the g tablet. I specifically have a blackberry storm 2 from Verizon with all the necessary rights to tether. The problem is the the OS I am using (Vegan) makes the tablet believe it is a phone rather then a computer so it obviously causes issues with connecting to a phone by Bluetooth. Any assistance would be great.

Anyone ever figure out if tether between storm2 and gtab? Running vegan b 5.1
I have an android phone and it tethers fine. Do you see the black berry show up in your network??
I think there is an app called tether for the blackberry that lets you do bluetooth tether.
barackisbrown... Wifi tether or usb tether?

I use wifi tether..Not sure if the gtablet can do usb tethering??
It's been asked in several different threads, there is no solution currently to tether blackberry with the gtab. There is no bluetooth dun client available to do this yet unfortunately.
I just got my G tab about a week ago and and wondering the same thing. I have a iPhone that I have jailbroken so bluetooth would be the most convenient way to tether but if anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.
Besides the difference between Bluetooh and wife, what is the difference between those two types of tethering???

I don't know what the speed differences would be between the two methods but I've been using Wireless Tether on my rooted Droid X for almost two months. It turns my phone into a 3G wifi hotspot that allows up to 5 devices to connect to. Since I have an unlimited data plan with Verizon this seemed like a no-brainer to me rather than paying them an additional $30/month for a lousy 2GB to use the Verizon hotspot app the phone came with.
This has worked with no headaches and since I always have my phone with me it is convenient.

So I installed the Nero ROM on my Vibrant and it states that I can tether, but anyone know of a way to tether it to my G-Tab? I found apps like PDA-Net, which will install just fine on my phone, but will it have issues if installed on my tablet? Pre-Thanks for the help. You guys rock ! ! !
I'm running tnt lite 4.2.1 and I'm tethering it to the gtab. The Tnt lite rom recognizes ad hoc tethering which is required using Wireless Tether on my Droid X to the gtab. I don't run VEGAn so I can't help you there.

I want to root my Xoom so I can wireless tether from my phone. If I can't do this, I don't even want the Xoom. So, if I root it and I still don't like it(because I still have a few days before I can take it back), is there a way I can get it back to the stock software and all so I can return it? I have the wifi model.
I saw some other posts on this but I wasn't quite clear on whether they would work or not. Some were only for Verizon model and stuff so I wasn't sure.
Thanks.
Why would you want to root the Xoom?
Wouldn't you just be able to connect wi-fi by just allowing your cell phone to output wi-fi signal? I can do this without rooting my Xoom.
Hmmm, I guess I am confused by your question. Do you want to use your phone to act as the modem for your Xoom or your Xoom to act as a modem for your phone?
If it is the latter, that doesn't make much sense. So it must be the former and in that case you would need to have a rooted phone to tether your Xoom to. Your Xoom can then remain stock.
My phone is rooted. I want to use my phone's internet to tether to my Xoom. Wifi tether apps create an ad hoc wifi network for your device to be able to connect to, and if you have not heard, Motorola disabled the functionality to connect to ad hoc networks in the Xoom. Therefore, it must be rooted.

The hacked Sprint hotspot. Haven't tried wireless tether.
Guess it depend on your phone. Using tether on my incredible and droid 2 it is not in adhoc mode but infrastructure mode. They both show up as wireless g networks not wireless b or adhoc. I also did not know of anything you had to do to a rooted xoom to use the adhoc serivce.

Well that app must run differently than the wireless tether because I know for a fact wireless tether doesn't work unless the Xoom is rooted.
Edit: dch921 what app are you using?

You are incorrect sir. My Xoom Wifi is not rooted. And I have no problem tethering with my Droid Incredible. Not using any app. Just the native Wifi tether built into CM7.

Then I don't know what the problem is because my tether network does not show up when I scan for networks in my Xoom.
I am using cm 7 tether as well.
The newer experimental builds of wireless tether apk supports infrastructure mode. Not sure which phone you are using but here is the link to the site where the project is hosted

This is 100% incorrect. I have a Rooted HTC Evo and use Wireless Tether all the time on my WiFi Xoom ( No root whatsoever).
Yeah i was already corrected on that. Just has to be in infrastructure mode. My phone has an older version without infrastructure mode.
So I currently own a Thunderbolt on Verizon as well as a wifi only galaxy tab and a wifi only xoom.
I also have a G2X on a 2 week trial. I was going to transfer me and my gf's phones over from Verizon.
I have my G2X rooted already and I have wireless tether installed. It works but my Xoom and my Galaxy tab won't recognize it. I'm assuming this is because it's running in ad-hoc mode and not infrastructure.
If this something that can be changed with kernal upgrade or custom roms or will this phone forever broadcast ad-hoc? This is pretty important to me as it's one of my primary purposes for switching to tmobile. (4g in my area vs none for verizon as well as battery life.)
all the 3 version is infrastructure mode the 2 version is in ad hoc. try it out should work not sure yet tho. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I feel like a tard now actually. I'm so used to having verizon I didn't realize that T-Mobile didn't take out the stock android mobile hotspot app.
Does anyone know if t-mobile makes you sign up for a tethering plan to use it? I was able to fire it up and connect both my Xoom and my galaxy tab just fine.. just don't want a suprise in my bill.

Just use it.
If you got error page, you simply add tethering option or just change browser agent (but I don't think you'll get in trouble if you tether with Android tablets).
As long as you have an unlimited data package youll be fine...they have a 2gig & 5gig. Once you go over those limits it will still work, just not as fast as before you went over the data cap. No issues with mine tho, my hotspot works fine with various devices

It's not an app, it's in the wireless network settings. Same place as wifi-bluetooth and all that. Just a check box to turn it on.
Funny story about the wireless tether for root users app.
So when I posted this that it will only work in ad-hoc mode, I found a workaround for my xoom to connect before I realized there was built in hotspot. The built in hotspot works great and it's infrastructure mode, but like my thunderbolt and droid x before it, won't stay connected in my office for some reason.
I tried the wireless tether program and low and behold it stays connected firmly in my office. Must be something about it being ad-hoc because all the infrastructure mode tethering methods I've tried will not stay connected in my office.. must be some intereference or something.
I am running a stock rooted NS4G and I am not able to get wireless tether to work on my phone. I have tried Wireless Tether and I can see the network on my computer but when I try to connect its a no go (my computer just keeps connecting but never connects). I also tried Barnacle Tether but I get the same issue. I really don't-won't want to change my kernel to get this feature does any one have any ideas?
Thanks
I had to download the latest wireless tether app.

Lol no it doesn't. Enableing the hotspot disables my data connection so I use wifi tether.

It disables the data on the phone because it ports it straight to the wifi connection. Personally, I find this provides a more reliable connection (though it is annoying that updates are suspended while you're using it).
Edit: It is not 100% pass through. Data still works on the phone, but sync is suspended.

Is there any way to get 4G tethering and infrastructure rather than ad-hoc?
If via wireless or wifi-tether app what version are you using? 2.0.8 pre-1 or 3.0 pre-14? Or something else? The built-in tethering turns 4G off, so alternatively to wireless tether is there a way around this?

Officially, yes (or, "It's a bug we're working on").
What I know:
On the Evo, the Sprint wifi app would authenticate to check if you subscribed to a tethering plan. If not, it gave an error and would not work. The Nexus uses the stock Android tethering app, which does no such thing. It just works.
What I don't know:
- If Sprint will work with Google to make the stock tethering app subscription-dependant.
- If Sprint will leave it alone, as a Pure Google feature they'd rather keep on the down low. After all, people are switching to Sprint just to get stock Android, and there are reports that T-Mobile still isn't charging for tethering on the Nexus 6 months later.
- If Sprint will detect usage and charge for tethering after the fact.

+1 on this! The built in hotspot only works for 3g. Of course we 4g owners want full speed so that just isn't good enough. I have gotten android wifi tether running on ad hoc and it works BUT I really want the added protection of WPA and the ability to connect other devices besides a computer. I've been searching for a way to run it as a wireless access point but haven't found anything. I'm guessing by the lack of response to the above post there aren't any solutions yet???

I know I'm dredging up an old thread here, but when I Google'd this issue this was the thread I found and I wanted to add the solution for others running into this.
I ended up finding a way to make this work! I'm using the latest version of android-wifi-tether (3.1-beta7). If you set the "Device-Profile" to "Samsung Galaxy S" and the "Setup-Method" to "Netd", it will support tethering to 3G or 4G (4G takes a little while to reconnect after enabling tethering) via WPA/WPA2. My tethered laptop checks in at 9.96/1.41Mbps down/up with this method.
Since Verizon will start to charge extra for tethering on June 15th, I am looking for a free app to tether via USB.
I tried android-wired-tether since I have root access, but that app does not work.
I am aware of pdanet, easytether and tether for andriod, but all are paid apps.
If there is not a free usb tether app, what is the best free working wifi one for the droid charge?
Thanks!
I would recommend Klink tether they have a free and a paid version. Its way better. Also the developer of the app responds quickly if you have problems. Hope that helps

I really like "Open Garden Wifi" for wifi tethering. many people really seam to like Barnacle Wifi Tether also.
I have been using PDAnet for usb tether and wireless tether (root) for wifi.
Both seem to have been working good on the Charge.
I used them both with the Fascinate for months.
I just bought my charge a few days ago and recently rooted with the new altered beast ODIN ROM. Is there any tether software that doesn't require a client installation on the tethered computer, or maybe just the phone drivers?

WIFI tether options don't require any software on the client, just a working wireless card and OS that supports Wifi (can't think of one that doesn't)...
Wireless tether for root users is what I use
Barnacle is another free option
I am sure there are more....
