NFC Service gobbling up battery like CRAZY!! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. Im on Xenon HD 3.0 (4.2.1) with Marmite Kernel 7.3. I have used many 4.2.1 ROMs but all of them have this issue that the process "NFC Service" takes up too much battery. It was there on JellyShot, Xenon HD 2.0 and SlimBean (all 4.2.1 ROMs). However it wasn't there in CM 10. My device model is i9020.
I've attached the screenshots of the battery stats. Hope someone can fix this issue. As the battery life is the Biggest problem here and I haven't seen anyone else with this similar case. Thank you

untick nfs on settings

Just noticed. I have an NFC bug. My NFC is continuously on :/ i cant change it back to OFF. Here's the Screenshot.

I'd this problem and i just delete or say just uninstalled nfc service..
No NFC battery drain here..
and i don't need NFC, if you need it and want to stop it just freeze it or disable it or you can turn off nexus s, pull out battery, press power button for few seconds, then reinsert battery and go to setting and you will be able to untick NFC setting..

What I tried:
1. Reflashed the ROM I'm on... Just the ROM and GApps. No kernel no nothing.. Still had the problem.
2. Tried freezing the app. No luck.
3. Uninstalling "NFC Service" didn't do anything either.
No luck :/ still the NFC Service is ticking on :/
Had anyone else successfully fixed this issue? Im getting it on all 4.2.1 builds :/

"NFC Service" still running... :/ even after a restart.. I'd let it settle down for a bit :/ is there a solution that makes the faulty NFC Service thing OK again? :/

Had the same problem for a day. Was freaking out. I think I used android beam or wallet. Went away after a battery cycle.

What i did after Flashing Rom is, uninstall NFC.apk and TAG.apk from system->app and then reboot.
Now i don't have NFC settings and Battery drain is gone as well..

NFC.apk can't be removed from KitKat
Uninstalling the nfc.apk did the trick for ROMs up to CM 10.2. But in KitKat based ROMs it is no longer a solution. Once you delete the apk or restrict permission, the Settings will FC when opened. Is there any other solutions?

I don't have this issue. There must be an app that is waking your device/wifi during sleep.
1) go to settings/wifi/advanced and choose never for "keep wifi on during sleep"
2) get betterbatterystat app to check what is waking up your device.

Havent changed anything and didn't install anything.WiFi is totally turned off. Even flight mode on will still cause this. It happens about 6 timed every few seconds and then stop for a while. Soft Reset the device won't fix it either. It seems like a nasty bug. After some time of use.
By the way I don't have android 4.0 but 3.2 4.0 is still not here in Europe.

Oops. I thought you are rooted.
If you ever want to have ics better than stock faster and more stable and not buggy. Just unlock your bootloader and flash a pre rooted rom of team eos rom.
By the way. Team eos released 4.1.1 jelly bean rom for you too. I am on it now. It is lightening super fast.

After 3 years of owning this xoom, I found out what causes the screen to randomly come on and off -- using a non default wallpaper.
Sounds silly, but all I did was change my wallpaper back to one of the default ones and I problem of the screen coming on randomly :laugh:stopped!

Buddy, you'd ALWAYS start these threads in Q/A section...as suggested by kataria.vikesh
and you'd always post details like, which ROM /Kernel you're using too
But since you already started this thread, 'll reply you here...
The screenshot posted shows that your device was AWAKE most of the time...so that could be the reason for this sudden battery drop.
But again, it doesn't exactly points anything particular, which might be responsible for the phone being awake...
So, I'd suggest you to install this app "GSam Battery Monitor" by GSam Labs and monitor the results next time.
here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm
This app will tell you details such as which app/service used how much battery etc...
Hope it helps
Wipe your battery stats if you have cwm (clockwork mod recovery) installed..
Boot into recovery > advanced > wipe battery stats
Do a full charge and discharge
Also add the details about your rom, kernel, boot loop etc

Did u 'force reboot' your phone by holding diwn power button for 7-8 seconds? This happens to my phone when I turn it off in an improper fashion - such as pulling out battery without turning off the phone, or holding down power button to force a reboot - which at times is the only way to get the phone working if it has hung. Btw, I am on GB 2.3.6.
Edit: On second look, this seems like a calibration issue, since the battery graph rises after the sudden drop, and then declines again. So do calibrate your battery as suggested in the above post.

Battery Eater: Google Services?

I kept my (at 100% when I went to sleep) phone unplugged last night while I slept to see how it does when it's idle. (when I'm working I'm running WiFi tether which obviously sucks battery life so I've not seen how it sits.
6 hours later I woke up to A battery at 71%, which was kind of surprising. I've attached some screen shots.
I run CleanROM 6 with its stock kernel. Would a different kernel help?

Are you on Wi-Fi at home? I've read some people having this issue and they've turned off the Wi-Fi power management feature and it seems to resolve this. Settings--wi-fi--menu key-- advanced should get you to the right menu (I'm on an aosp rom so not sure if it's in the same exact place).
Also an app like Better Battery Stats might provide more specific information about whatever is draining you.

I have the same prob since CR6v2 (50% Google Service batt use when relatively idle) and have always had my wifi set to stay on when sleeping (assuming that's the setting you're talking about). It seems clear via GSAM and normal batt stats that Google Services is causing wakelock. GSAM says, "included packages Google Contacts Sync" but I'm not sure if that's conclusive or if it's just providing an example.

How to get the best Battery life?

Hey I'm currently running CM11 and I want to be able to maximize my battery life but still have customization. I'm looking for any option weather it be flash another ROM or what.

Battery life depends on the users configuration. Start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785128

Flashing custom kernels (Franco for me) has yielded some improvement (but as it always is with this kind of things, YMMV), disable Google Now, turn location to "battery saving" or "GPS only", disable wifi always on scanning, you know, the usual. The thread above should help you quite a bit. Also, this is what I do...

If you Greenify apps that don't need to be Greenified (ones that don't wakelock) and you use them often it'll use up more battery than save.
I Have figured how why my battery life was being so weird and I have fixed it. I had an app called Lux and for some reason it was killing my battery.

Never thought of that - guess there'd be diminishing returns at some point. I do want to keep FB Messenger greenified though...that app sucks up battery like there is no tomorrow. I'll try degreenifying WhatsApp and a few other apps and see how it goes.

I use Velis Auto Brightness instead - I use these apps because honestly, the stock Nexus 5 auto-brightness is overkill. In a dark room, the screen is like a second sun!
Though if you have GravityBox, you could apparently tweak the auto brightness values...I haven't given it a try though.

Cm12 Mobile radio active issue?

In KitKat Display was the highest battery drainer. Now i switched to lollipop ,
Problem is that in c12 based Roms mobile radio active time is insanly high and drains my battary a lot.(See image)Does anyone else got this issues and is there any fix for this?
I usually do clean installs of my roms. When i am in wifi my battery life is mich better.
Here is chrome for example, but nearly every APP runnimg im the background has the same behavior.

Same for me.
which is installed gapps?
mobile radio active
someone managed to solve it?
Same problem here, it's on majority of my apps and the screen time is all the way at the bottom. I've switched Roms, modems and firmwares. I really don't want to go back to lollipop lol.
Any solution?
Same problem here. Clean install of CM12S. When I'm on WiFi I have no problem.
I think it's this is a know issue of lollipop. No one knows why. Someone have the problem someone not...
I can suggest you to go on privacy guard and block keep alive from the apps who use most of the battery... And sometimes check if they are running and close them...
Until someone find the fix... Like Wakelock...

Problem also here...IT's not a wakelock issue...Looking for a fix!
This is a screenshot the difference drain between WiFi and 3G
Issue ist still there in CM12.1 . Thibking about switching back to Kitkat.
Same problem, COS12 with default kernel. I changed the modem to see if the OxygenOS' one could fix this and one particular app (WhatsApp) went from 3+ hours/day to 40min/day with similiar use and signal reception, but others remained high
Even 5.1.1 has it
I can't believe this annoying bug hasn't already been fixed as I can't believe why the entire group of lollipop users all around the world is flooding the web underlining it.
I've tried at least 3 different 5.1.1. based ROM and they all have this bug (not to mention how many different 5.1 based ROM I've already tested or 5.0.2 as well for what matters).
Funny thing tho, the first day I'm using the ROM the bug never appears: it's only after a couple of days that the mobile radio active stats spike up to 2 or 3 hours for some apps that use internet (it could be spotify, google search, etc.)
Really hope someone comes up with a fix, this is getting more than annoying...
