Are 4.2 roms becoming far more stable? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I have been on Beans for a while and I love it since it is tw with a aosp touch and feel but lately I have been noticing in the developmental thread that there are now far more 4.2 roms out there. I know that aosp has been pretty damn buggy just a month or so back but are they now stable? or dare I say it almost daily driver worthy? Im actually in the process of downloading the latest liquid smooth rom to check it out and I cant wait to see the results.

I've tried all the 4.2 ROMs and the only one where everything works on my phone; GPS, MMS, call volume etc, is mastamoons build. I know ROMs work different on everyone's phone though.

I think that most of them are stable in the sense that they can be daily drivers depending on what features you need.
All of them except for baked black bean and mastamoons unofficial builds use a new audio stack that breaks Bluetooth audio streaming.
All of them have issues with encrypted Wi-Fi tethering.
I've been using the baked ROM, it's awesome. Haven't had any random crashes, audio and GPS work well, and data is pretty good for the most part

So baked has everything working so far? Honestly for me I never ever use blue tooth or wifi tethering which is why that has never really bothered me. As long as data, sms, (group texting is the main reason i want to go to 4.2) and gps works then I am totally fine. Oh and of course battery cant be totally horrid haha

Mastamoon's 1/18 build of CM works great. It's the only 4.2 ROM I can find with functioning bluetooth.

New to Thunderbolt

Just switched to a TBolt from OG Incredible. Was running cm7 on it, and loved it. Just wanted some idea as to the best version of cm7 for Tbolt and any other things to make it run better. Any help would be appreciated. I kinda dont have time to read thru 10000 posts in the cm7 topic...
Welcome.
I don't think you're going to get a ton of help with a first post like that, but you might want to check out the CM7 links from the forum post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930
There are also a couple posts at the top of here and the Q&A subforum about what roms people prefer.
I don't have CM7 on my thunderbolt, but on a different device. In general, CM7 is stable enough such that the recent nightlies, if not the latest, are usually the best. However, currently most of the CM dev work is focused on ICS/CM9.
I just came from dinc last week. I had senae 3.5 on mine, though ive flashed every dinc rom ever available. You may want to try a sense rom, i was shocked how smooth 3.5 mikrunny is on this, and it all works. I will try some aosp roms soon, there is a cool one with ics theme, pretty slick. Just experiment dude, this phone rocks.

If you don't need MMS, I highly recommend MIUI. On the other hand, fully featured and most awesomely completely customizable - Gingeritis 3D. I personally switched from Gingeritis to AOSP recently, better battery life and faster performance but you can't use VZW apps. I'm currently running on Thundershed CM7 nightly and I will probably run this until CM9.

I'm currently running ThunderShed and it's working REALLY well for me. It's a CM7 ROM from a guy called Workshed. It's really good.
If you Google "Thundershed Thunderbolt" you'll find it very easily.

+1 thundershed is ur only option imo. As its the only aosp rom with good incall volume levels. And its super smooth. miui does not have working mms which is a bummer cause i like miui also.

You need to go to a Sense based ROM and connect to GPS, then flash (while still connected) to a AOSP ROM to fix GPS permanently.
Also I'm not sure why you're having those WiFi issues; try deleting the WiFi and DHCP folders, I forget where theyre located. I suppose running fix permissions wouldn't hurt, hahaha, I know people hate that response.

Help me choose a rom

Number 1 for me is stability. I am looking for a Rom that fully works or for the most part everything is working. Full camera functionality/flash, Sending and receiving SMS & MMS, GPS (I use navigation often), making and receiving calls, all the basic stuff that work on stock. Stability is my main objective. Second would be battery life & fluidity. Everything else like customization options is a nice bonus
I expected the Jelly Bean OTA to be better than it was. I did a factory reset when I got the update to make sure my phone started fresh. Even formatted internal and external SD card. I just expected a better experience. They took away some things I loved and added some things I don't like. But the main thing that bothers me is the occasional stutter/lag. And I notice battery life is worst on the JB OTA. I thought JB was suppose to be refined, it's not totally buttery smooth like they promote it to be. At least not on the stock Verizon variant of the GS3.
I am looking at "The Executioner" or the CleanRom/CleanRom Lite Edition. Any opinions or thoughts by people who have ran both would be appreciated!! I realize roms, as most things in life are a personal preference but I'd still like to get some opinions.

Thanks for the feed back!! Is there any common bugs people been experiencing with it? All the basic functions are working well? Again I appreciate the reply, I'm brand new to the S3 section of the site. This makes me excited to see what the rom is about. I take it the rom has no stutters or occasional lag like the stock touchwiz.

I use the CM10 Nightlies. I update about once a week or so. And I have had very minimal issues. When I did run into any, I just updated the next day and the issue was fixed. And you can report bugs to the developers to help expedite the fixes as they come up. Not to mention no more touchwiz, *Gag*

People spend hours putting together guides, doing reviews, etc. It's frustrating sometimes to see how little effort some people put into utilizing the forum.
It works both ways. These boards would be alot less cluttered if people searched. We're all guilty of it, I'm not preaching. Just know where he coming from.
For example there's a great guide in the android development forum that compares many different roms.

CM10.1 as a daily driver. Who is pulling this off?

I want to use CM10.1 as a daily driver, but all of the bugs and small nicks make me go back to more developed and stable TW roms. Anyone using 10.1 as a daily? Can you give me your opinions on it? Which rom are you using? What bugs do you notice?
Thank you
996
The in call volume has been fixed for me so I'm going to run it as a daily driver from now on.
Bluetooth audio is still completely broken I hear but it's not something I depend on or use without going out of my way.
Unless some other huge bug manifests, all is going pretty well.
So far there are two main issues that make me consider going back to TW:
1. Sometimes when I interrupt a game from loading, the entire system is laggy as hell until I reboot
2. There is a small delay when answering the phone. I don't know who can hear who during that delay, but its annoying nonetheless.
I'm waiting for the stretched image bug to be fixed on multi-window ROMs before I go back to TW though. It's definitely daily driver worthy.

Been daily on mine since the unofficial cm10 back in August, fine here but maybe I just can't stand TW. Only little issue Ive come across that bothers me is sometimes it will think a short press on menu/home is a long press and have to reboot. Bluetooth audio is fine if you go into the build.prop and modify lpa.decode to false

Been using as daily driver since unofficial cm10, lost IMEI and had some pretty good scares but I have been loving it ever since. I would say the only issue for me right now is the screen flickering which can be somewhat fixed by disabling HW overlay, which does not seem to stick through a reboot.
thank you all for the replies. I was running CM10 for a while, but I just resorted back to TW. I can't wait until all the nicks and bugs get sifted out of 10.1. Pure Google is the way to go.

if you are going to "wait for all the nicks and bugs get sifted out", you might always have a wait. Custom ROMs are just that, custom, and sometimes, what works for one phone won't work for another.
Just pick one that you like the features, and learn work arounds or ignore the "nicks and bugs"
Thanks to all the DEVs! I love waving my modded S3 under everyone running stock and asking why their phones can't do what mine does!

Mastamoon in the official 10.1 thread has been putting out some rocking unofficial builds that contain cherry picks for most of the issues that have annoyed me. I really suggest checking out his 1/4 build (I'm on this) or his latest. He seems to have Bluetooth and call volume issues pretty close to being wrapped up.

I ran liquid's for two weeks or so, but my flashing addiction made me try something else. Went back to AOKP 4.1 but now I'm back on stock TW that I made a few modifications to. I replaced the MMS app and keyboard with AOSP as well as the UI sounds, and I'm fairly content for now. Usually any kind of lags annoys me, but I've found JB Touchwiz to be alright ( I was an avid HTC user prior. Touchwiz is way smoother than Sense.)

I love CM, but lately it seems they have too much going on. The barely got 4.1 working, and came out with the M2 release, and then moved on to 4.2, which is CM 10.1. I prefer to stay with a dev that will tweak their ROM and stick with it until they get it right. That's why I will not use CM anymore. Unless they have hundreds of devs working constantly to keep up with the number of devices they support, they're eventually going to become a ROM that's unreliable. I hope I wrong, but with the S3 they're clearly not completing one OS before moving to another, which makes them a no go IMO.
Battery life has been absolutely incredible for me on 10.1. 9 hours on battery all on 4G with 20 min screen on at 80%

Just flashed the DarthStalker ROM onto my S3 I've had for about 2 weeks now, it works beautifully, I've gotta say. Super fast, native WiFi hotspot/USB tethering, I would highly recommend at least checking it out.

What do you run on YOUR Sgs4g? And why?

First off I have the Canadian T959W....I have tried most ICS roms & have gone with RemICS-UX...(hooked on TWRP) FB's new kg4 padded modem, as well as the proton ICS kernel(to control those annoying capacitive lights).
Though my model has the basic hardware of the V there are issues with some roms.
Looking forward to running cm10 or Slim bean as a daily driver when hotspot fixed

As far as Apps, Titanium is a must, Outlook Web App (OWA) for the work e-mail, and a great app called CamScanner, which puts a scanner on your phone, SwiftKey Flow Beta, SuperSU, Quick Boot, and SManager is a must for the Unlock code and root management.

Lol man, whats the prob hehe, it's stable for us, not for you all n u dont have to believe us anw n there is always a reason to keep it, not to release it cause we know that however stable it is, there will be complaints lmao so we will sneak peak when it's stable enough for someone like you cause I think my complaints (or plus more) r enough for Erik to keep it straight, we don't need more of that lol

I went from froyo to gb, tried stock, rooted stocked, barebones, valhalla and they all suck, reboots, gps issues, freezes, etc. went to ics and the battery life is just terrible, regardless of the rom or kernel, fix, shot, its unacceptable for daily use, then tried jb, but it lacks gps, thats terrible. I just went back to froyo, rooted and its decent. I guess that due to this phone only released to tmobile there are not many devs to put a decent rom together, I m now waiting for the contract to end to switch to att and get the iphone. Screw samsung and google, no fricking support or updates for a 2 year old product....laim. My 2 year old ipad has the latest google search, but my 2 year old samsung phone using google os is not compatible...please!! I m done.
On my sgs4g I run audiophile ics for its great music quality

Lol beast you made be look with search broken for your slim 4.2.*2* for like a 30 mins thinking I missed you updating slim to 4.2.2
Cm9 w/proton because it's the latest which has all the things working that I want.
Thinking about trying one of the other cm9 derived ROMs, but I'm just enjoying this one for now.
Valhalla black was great. So was cm7.
On any of the roms, seems bad apps are the biggest problem. I try to only add one or two at a time, but even then sometimes an update will cause problems.

Help me find a daily?

Hey everyone, been lurking mostly and first time posting. I'm not one for having the best newest rom. I am looking for something that can be my daily driver. Currently I'm using cm10.0 12/16 build lol because anything I've ever tried has been really buggy. I'm looking for anything Smoother, reliable and better battery.
Thanks for your help!
Carbon if you want AOSP
Beans 10 build if you want touchwiz.

I recommend the unofficial CM10.1 builds made by Masta.

I reccommend stock 4.1.2 leak with my MODS
if you want stock touchwiz newest with MODs..
if you want a 4.1.1/4.1.2 AOSP ROM, I personally suggest ParanoidAndroid 2.5.6
and if you want AOSP 4.2 I'd would sugggest BAMF Paradigmn, but that isn't public yet, so my next is Carbon ROM is nice, Slim is great, and Eclipse is awesome if you want a nice dark theme and a great ROM..
I personally use stock kernel on touchwiz, and whatever comes in the ROMs for AOSP.
Thanks for the recommendation guys. I'm not a big fan of touch wiz and much prefer aosp.
What are your opinions on aokp?

aopk, carbon, or liquidsmooth
I personally use Cm10.1 with Imos lean kernel. It is daily worthy but I suggest using the unofficial builds. I have been very happy.

Been using carbon for the day. Loving it so far. Super snappy. Only thing I noticed was 4g drops sometimes between wifi hand off.
I'll be trying eclipse soon

Agreed, I would definitely go with mastamoon's unofficial build, if only for the GPS revert. I prefer lk as well, but the stock kernel has gotten better.
What's the battery life on carbon? Or cm10.1 cuz Im always using KT kernel so yeah

I am using CleanRom 4.5 with Apex Launcher, it has been rock solid, I just can't get myself to switch to any other ROM, everything just works. You get the AOSP look with the TW features I want.

I honestly think this is your best bet. Though the AOSP roms are snappy and simple, there are still way too many bugs. I'm on CleanRom as well and it's very smooth with virtually no bugs. You can even theme your phone to resemble AOSP while still having the luxury of using all the addons touchwiz has to offer.

I've gotten absolutely amazing battery life as well as speed and reliability. There is only one bug and that is a lack of pattern lock which many roms have.

As I said above this ROM also has virtually no bugs and is very nicely put together. If you do in fact go with clean however, don't put a launcher on it because it ruins the purpose of a custom rom.

I don't normally use a pattern lock, but I just set one up and it seemed to work fine for me. I am using a CM10.1 unofficial that I've repo-sync'd and built myself this morning. I added a few cherry-picks, but they shouldn't have directly affected that.

My top 2 favorite ROMs right now are beanstown jellybeans and SYNERGY.

My personal favorites are as follows:
AOSP: Carbon or Eclipse
TW: Beans or Synergy
Currently on Carbon with KT747 kernel and perfomance/battery life is out of this world!

What bugs? Seriously, what bugs are there that I keep hearing about?
I am running the damn ROM and I don't experience bugs, but if I listened to everyone else I'd swear I did!

You are so right, I experience none myself but everyone on TW based ROMs or things like carbon think AOSP is very buggy.

I've lately been wanting a speedy, stable, and battery lasting rom. If you're looking for that TW is the way to go for that. I'm using Edgehood's delta rom right now and it's been great. Running Lean kernel 1.8. I like AOSP as well, but the lack of stable data connection has kept me off of it.

It's not that buggy at all. It's the stable data connection which is still a little off. It definitely has come a long way. Reason why I'm still on TW for right now.

CleanRom 5.6 with Heinz 57 theme running anthrax kernel is the bomb. They also have a working flashable AOSP MMS in the theme and apps section.
