CM10.1 as a daily driver. Who is pulling this off? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I want to use CM10.1 as a daily driver, but all of the bugs and small nicks make me go back to more developed and stable TW roms. Anyone using 10.1 as a daily? Can you give me your opinions on it? Which rom are you using? What bugs do you notice?
Thank you
996

The in call volume has been fixed for me so I'm going to run it as a daily driver from now on.
Bluetooth audio is still completely broken I hear but it's not something I depend on or use without going out of my way.
Unless some other huge bug manifests, all is going pretty well.

So far there are two main issues that make me consider going back to TW:
1. Sometimes when I interrupt a game from loading, the entire system is laggy as hell until I reboot
2. There is a small delay when answering the phone. I don't know who can hear who during that delay, but its annoying nonetheless.
I'm waiting for the stretched image bug to be fixed on multi-window ROMs before I go back to TW though. It's definitely daily driver worthy.

Been daily on mine since the unofficial cm10 back in August, fine here but maybe I just can't stand TW. Only little issue Ive come across that bothers me is sometimes it will think a short press on menu/home is a long press and have to reboot. Bluetooth audio is fine if you go into the build.prop and modify lpa.decode to false

Been using as daily driver since unofficial cm10, lost IMEI and had some pretty good scares but I have been loving it ever since. I would say the only issue for me right now is the screen flickering which can be somewhat fixed by disabling HW overlay, which does not seem to stick through a reboot.

thank you all for the replies. I was running CM10 for a while, but I just resorted back to TW. I can't wait until all the nicks and bugs get sifted out of 10.1. Pure Google is the way to go.

I've been AOSP since week one of owning my SGS3, however weak data signal / drops and spotty gps has me trying out TW.
Synergy is pretty awesome. It's not a huge adjustment once you get it configured with your custom launcher. Plus, MultiView is amazing!

if you are going to "wait for all the nicks and bugs get sifted out", you might always have a wait. Custom ROMs are just that, custom, and sometimes, what works for one phone won't work for another.
Just pick one that you like the features, and learn work arounds or ignore the "nicks and bugs"
Thanks to all the DEVs! I love waving my modded S3 under everyone running stock and asking why their phones can't do what mine does!

Mastamoon in the official 10.1 thread has been putting out some rocking unofficial builds that contain cherry picks for most of the issues that have annoyed me. I really suggest checking out his 1/4 build (I'm on this) or his latest. He seems to have Bluetooth and call volume issues pretty close to being wrapped up.

I ran liquid's for two weeks or so, but my flashing addiction made me try something else. Went back to AOKP 4.1 but now I'm back on stock TW that I made a few modifications to. I replaced the MMS app and keyboard with AOSP as well as the UI sounds, and I'm fairly content for now. Usually any kind of lags annoys me, but I've found JB Touchwiz to be alright ( I was an avid HTC user prior. Touchwiz is way smoother than Sense.)

I am running the CM 10.1 Official NIGHTLIES. They have been my daily driver since almost beginning of the month. My custom ringtone only rings once when someone calls, answering calls ends up with a weird delay before anyone can hear you. A couple of other small bugs, but no deal-breakers that I really see.

I like slim bean 4.2 but I am not able to find a working wifi tether for it. Most 4.2 roms I cannot get wireless tether working

Update. Running 10.1. I dirty flashed from 10 and all my problems were solved. Pretty awesome having the latest version of android. Love it. Battery life can be better though haha

I love CM, but lately it seems they have too much going on. The barely got 4.1 working, and came out with the M2 release, and then moved on to 4.2, which is CM 10.1. I prefer to stay with a dev that will tweak their ROM and stick with it until they get it right. That's why I will not use CM anymore. Unless they have hundreds of devs working constantly to keep up with the number of devices they support, they're eventually going to become a ROM that's unreliable. I hope I wrong, but with the S3 they're clearly not completing one OS before moving to another, which makes them a no go IMO.

Battery life has been absolutely incredible for me on 10.1. 9 hours on battery all on 4G with 20 min screen on at 80%

Just flashed the DarthStalker ROM onto my S3 I've had for about 2 weeks now, it works beautifully, I've gotta say. Super fast, native WiFi hotspot/USB tethering, I would highly recommend at least checking it out.

[Q] AOKP or CM9?

I'm currently using Milestone 6 AOKP on my Skyrocket and it's pretty great. The only thing is, CM9 released a stable RC for the Skyrocket and i'm wondering if it would be better to switch to CM9 than AOKP? Although I know they have their differences, i'm wondering the Pro's and Con's of each ROM if anyone can think of any.
Thanks!
I'm in the same boat

Aokp is build from cm9. So any feature that cm9 has is pretty much a given in aokp. Aokp has more features added onto it. Personally I prefer aokp. But cm9 is always smooth, fast and simple. The beauty of this is it your choice run em both and decide which you like better:thumbup:

Well the thing is, about AOKP M6, is that it doesn't come with a Music Player, I have to install an app to wake the phone screen for every text. My Messaging always freezes up, randomly shuts off, a whole load of things and I just think i'm going to swap over to CM9 right now to check it out and see how it is.
Oh and also, some of the features on AOKP such as the "Task manager style changing feature" doesn't seem to be anywhere on Milestone 6. Can't find where to actually change the style of it.
Sounds like cm9 is the way to go

I've settled on CM9 mostly because AOKP has a lot of minor bugs that irritate me, i've reported them but have been ignored. One thing is whenever I lock my screen after texting someone, once I receive a text and unlock the screen, the predictions for the keyboard would not pop up. I'd have to close out of the Messaging app and open it back up which is an annoyance if you text a lot.
Plus, AOKP only releases an update/build every....month. Not willing to wait a month just to fix some minor annoyances when I can switch ROMs and fix it in a day. AOKP is still a great ROM, just not for me.

And also, i'm on the Release Candidate for the Skyrocket, CM9, and i've encountered no issues thus far. Of course, the screen doesn't light up when a text is received, so it must be ICS related. Other than that, so far so good.

Post ICS launch, which ROM are you using and Why. ICS or JB

First, thanks to the Devs working on the CM9 and CM10 ROMs. They are looking good.
I just wanted to see which ROMs you guys were using primarily now. I jumped from GB right to CM10 from dr4stic. I'm pretty happy with it so far.
Are you guys using JB, or sticking with a flavor of ICS?
I'm using Blaz3r 4.0.4 by ptmr3 and I couldn't be happier. I like TouchWiz, and a lot of the stock widgets so this one fits me just fine.
Oh that's right, I forgot about TouchWiz
Stock ICS by tthaz777, I love it. I miss Tweaked (GB), but I want to run ICS and need wi-fi calling. I also loaded CM10 but downgraded back to 4.0.4
CM 10 great built ROM with no bugs and a full jelly bean experience!

I've been using Blaz3r since it came out with Apex over top with perfect keyboard n compact qwerty mode. Drove 300 miles today used GPS, Looked at Google now 20 times to see how far away I was from home. I used the bluetooth to talk and play some tunes as well. I really like using a stock camera and the Samsung messaging is sweet. Only thing I can say if you use this, it seemed to take longer than 10 minutes to settle in ( I also have gone back and fixed permissions when adding apps) +1

Funny that I used ...ahem... used to have a skinomi screen protector on my Blaze but for some reason after 2 months in it started developing weird bubbles/lines that weren't present even days after installation so I took it off. That was over a month ago now and no scratches. I'm unsure if gorilla glass is used on this phone as I can't find any conclusive evidence on what it is. Maybe I got a bad skinomi, as my old exhibit and my wife's sensation have skinomi's and are still perfect. Just make sure you are ready and have the phone spotless or you will see those same dust spots for a long time lol.

I was really impressed with CM10 but sadly the random MAC address issue along with the lack of wifi calling (a CM issue in general) made me go back to Blaz3r. I'm sure CM10 development will chug along and it's hard to deny the feel of it - I may be going back to it soon (especially once hardware key notifications are fixed - I miss a notification light). You will have bugs/slowdowns on Blaz3r until getting titanium on it solely to remove Nova launcher. A reinstall of nova fixes it and I'm sure this is something that will be fixed (along with adding a default music player) with the next version. There are a few customization options but I would like more - kind of like the amount of customization options in DK on GB lol Development overall is really great here and there are plenty of options considering how long it's been since source dropped.

There is a milestone for cm10. The 4.2 ROMs are still in beta mode. I have been running cm10 m1 for weeks and everything works perfectly. Like I said 4+ hours of screen time plus all the customizations make it too hard to go back to anything TW based.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you said it yourself "possible issues" it doesn't mean that everyone will have issues. We all know that ROMs behave differently on different phones. Same with me. CM10.1 is great, but if I need to use my phone in an emergency, I want to know I have a phone to rely on. And tethering doesn't work (At least I think it doesn't work).

I may be lucky but I haven't experienced much of the problems people claim in CM10.1. I doubt I'll ever look back at TouchWiz-based roms.
Personally, I've never used CM on any of my devices, I've always used others. For instance, I ran stock unrooted Touchwiz on my S3 for a couple months, then I switched to Liquidsmooth, I had that as my daily driver for at least 6 weeks, but the FC's and data dropouts were too much to bear so I went looking for another ROM, I installed Mean Lean Jellybean Machine Build 4 and loved it, so once Build 5 came out I switched to that, and have been on it ever since! I think I'll be staying on this ROM for awhile.

TouchWiz is actually an awesome oem skin for Android. It gets unfairly attacked because people think AOSP/CM must be better.
My personal experience: after rooting never used cm10.1 went straight to finding a good rom. Used executioner 2.5 liked the feel, speed, and battery life. Felt very stable. Tried cleanrom but started experiencing some bugs, switched quickly. Currently im running superchargedwiz rom kyjelly and it seems very stable i closely compare it to executioner 2.5 although im not getting the same battery life as i was getting on executioner but supercharged is very smooth. If i can figure out ktweakers kernal that came with supercharged, i know its possible to tweak it just right to get the right battery settings. My suggestion if your looking for a good rom to play with try one of these 2.

I don't think the devs want to risk hard bricking their own phones. I know the devs with the International version will make ROMs based on that leak.
Yea too much differences between the two variants as they are completely different phones internally.

I could wait. There's plenty of 4.2 around. All I really want is the multiwindow anyway

You guys that are getting excited about 4.2.1 must have never used it before. This version will become known as the Windows Vista of Android.
The biggest bug I have is https://code.google.com/p/android/i...c=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars&id=39633 . It was somewhat fixed in 4.2.2, but not completely. There are several other issues introduced in 4.2. There are lots of people that believe that nothing since 4.1.2 has been better than that version. Each Android since then has had bugs that ruin the experience and should have been caught by the beta testing team.

You're talking strictly TW right? Because the only issues with 4.2 AOSP are the signal and bluetooth, which I believe was fixed with 4.2.2. The signal has been worked on and is actually pretty decent depending on which ROM you flash. What other "experience ruining" bugs have you dealt with?

4.2 on my nexus devices runs without a hitch. l haven't even had issues with Bluetooth. 4.2 on my S3 on the other hand has been a bit buggier. Data drops, crappy Bluetooth audio and crappy/inoperable camera have plagued every rom I've tried.

The Unofficial CM10.1 rom by Mastamoon has been running great on my Verizon S3. They are nightlies, but certainly don't act like it!

Hopefully this fixes data issues. Where I normally have 3 bars of 4g I had 1 or none on every 4.2 rom. Even the new builds do the same thing. Maybe my phone donesnt like them? Ha

It shows the signal differently. The actual dBm should be the same. At least that's what I'm to understand.

Got a feeling TW 4.2.1 will be a little different than AOSP. At least that's what I would think.

I hope Samsung is working on a theme/skin engine for TW. They've come a long way with the level of customization in TW, but it's just so [email protected] ugly. Can't wait to see what else Sammy has integrated with 4.2.

I doubt it, I think it will attain the touchwiz looks just as they did from ICS to JB...
still green battery, toggles.. etc

AOSP & data speeds

So I've been running CleanROM 5.6 for awhile and it hasn't been updated in awhile. I really want to give AOSP a shot but last time I flashed CM10, I had constant data drops, it was actually pretty bad compared to CleanROM. I was hoping to get some opinions on some AOSP ROMs, data stability being top priority. 4.2 would be great, however I'm ok with flashing an earlier release as long as data works as expected. Thanks

If you want a nice stable fast and beautiful different aosp ROM with plenty of mods. Use slim bean. Very nice. Its my aosp go to. I like the DPI. Dont forget to flash the all in one package with it. It has lots of goodies. And includes the gapps. Peace.

Mastamoons cm10.1 builds data has been fixed for awhile now, when i'd run a 4.2 rom i'd always run his.

I prefer LiquidSmooth over both of these above 4.2 AOSP ROMs.

PAC man ROM is the way to Go. I haven't been back on TW in a while

Ha, I'm still on unlimited so I use my data a lot which is why I'd like an aosp ROM with reliable data connection.
From what others have said here and in the development sections, it looks like I'm gonna try carbon and liquid smooth first, I'll test and report back

Well, I've used both liquid and carbon enough to run through the motions and the winner wound up being carbon. This is purely based on 4G lte speeds in my area (Philly, PA), I'm not saying one is better because they are both equally unique in their own way, I just tend to have a better signal with carbon, battery life and performance was pretty much a wash.
Hopefully this is useful to those in the same boat

I've had no problems with CM10.1 (M1) ... I just upgraded to M2 today and things look good so far but I haven't really given it much burn-in time to find issues.
4.1 ROM: Jelly 'Beans' - Build 12
4.2 ROM: [OFFICIAL] AOKP | d2vzw | jb-mr1 build 5 -OR- CarbonROM -OR- RootBox
If you want a 4.2 ROM and would like a hybrid, I'd go with PAC-Man ROM

Carbon always worked best for me as well. My signal does seem to be significantly lower and data is slower than on tw roms though. But the AOSP benefits far outweigh the signal hit

I'm currently on Jelly Beans Build 12 and I absolutely love it. I don't know why but everytime I was on AOSP I found myself missing touchwiz. Although I go back and forth between Beans and Liquid. I loved some of the bells and whistles AOSP had but I keep finding myself coming back to Touchwiz. What are your ideas of the benefits that AOSP has. I find myself missing lock screen widgets and a few of the subtle things in the build.

I think AOSP far outweighs touchwiz in every aspect. TW does have some pretty neat features like gestures and popup widows, however AOSP just feels right, not hacked together like TW. Every Android device should come shipped with it. I don't really see the need for TW, Sense, Blur etc, besides corporate branding.. None of them can hold a candle to pure Google Android IMO.

I've noticed ever since going from a TW ROM (CleanROM 5.0) to an AOSP based ROM (Slim ROM, Carbon ROM, LiquidSmooth and currently ParanoidKANDdroid) that the data connection all around seems weaker than the TW based ROMS. For me all the AOSP ROMS mainained the same 4G speed, and had data drops in all the same areas. Some local area where I live I get great service/4g, others I have no 4g at all and am lucky to have any 3g on top of that. Only downside of the aosp based roms
