I would just buy an underwater camera? The pressure itself would break things in your Nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
your best bet if you want your phone with you is to buy a waterproof pouch like this one. Its not going to be very useful though since it will blur the camera, kill your touchscreen sensitivity and speakers. i guess it's still good to have your phone close to you for an emergency.
Thank you. what you mean when blur camera? Poor image quality when phone in this case?

yes the pouch is not fully transparent, its going to make your shots blurry. There are some cases for the iphone that are waterproof and with clear plastic so you can take pics but there's nothing like that for the N4. If you want to use it for pictures just get a waterproof camera, they are relatively cheap now and will take much better pics underwater than any phone with waterproof case.
edit : the only thing you can get that is made to fit the nexus 4 is this case(more of a plastic bag). It's a plastic bag with a hole in the back that you put your phone through and then stick a piece of plastic tape over it. Its not reusable and i wouldnt trust it to have it submerge in water.
Yeah I would recommend just getting an underwater camera, even a cheap disposable one over trying to use your phone.
The heavy duty plastic pouches work, but the touchscreen is not going to register very good through the plastic screen, especially with all the water around it interfering with the capacitive sensors, and the pouch itself will cause distortions and reflections on the captured pictures. So even if it did work the images would probably not be very clear.
Now I would recommend one of these pouches just to protect your phone from the sand/salt water. They would be fine to protect your phone while snorkeling and the pressures seen at that minimal depth would not harm the phone at all. Now if you tried to go scuba diving with just a pouch then you will most likely be buying a new phone. At those pressures water will find a way in and in extreme cases the pressure could cause some physical damage.
From personal experience a ziplock bag does NOT work very well even to just protect from getting splashed. They just are not durable enough to stand up to being in your pocket all day and staying closed/sealed.
Topic reminds me of one of the company's at CES this year, HZO protection or whatever. Hopefully the technology becomes standard for phones in the future.

Even with that protective coating Motorola advertises I would be concerned about salt water. That stuff is very corrosive and once the salt starts to crystallize I would worry that the coating could be compromised. Basically electronics and water, especially salt water, do not mix. I would think that if this coating was effective dive computers and lights would be using this instead of the heavy rubber gaskets and silicon grease that always seem to fail.
Motorola even just calls this "Splash protection"
invisible nano-coating splash protection inside and out

Ok, i have purcrased the Salabox 3xl and the ipega.
the salabox fit well but there is some issue to push the power button. I use ipega with iphone 4 4s and 5. I made with it different videos. Search for "pinna marchera" on youtube. The s3 version fit very very very well on nexus 4 but i can't push the power button to out of the standby. Does somebody have any ideas? sorry for my english, i'm an italian boy.

LOL then it probably was, the screen is very durable.
The screen can break pretty easily too, already got a crack on mine from a small fall out of my pocket when i had crouched.
I've always had a screen protector on every one of my phones due to the fact I always carry them in a pocket. I tend to use an Otterbox Commuter case when working in the field (I am in the military) and a slimmer case like the Spigen Modello for normal every day use. So my phones tend to be scratch free... your mileage may vary.
I will not answer this - to superstitious - I might jinx myself.

The screen is not very search resistant. I somehow managed to get a very small scratch on mine. And I tried to take care not to man handle it before I got a case and screen protector on it.
There is a YouTube video where the Samsung is put to a drop test at waist height from a two positions and the screen broke.
So the guy blew up the phone..lol
I already have 2 scratches on my screen =( and I'm very careful with it
My phone is always going into jean pockets, sliding off the passenger seat into the unknown cracks and crevices of the jeep. Not one screen scratch. No screen protection.

I came from a Droid Razr and while they said the screen used the new gorilla glass, I still was getting scratches on my screen. When I switched to the SIII I wasn't gonna take any chances. I got a moshi brand screen protector for mine. Kind of expensive but it adheres via static so no bubbles, very smooth tracing, and very good protection.
Bottom line - They're expensive but worth every penny. We use them on our display iPads at my store and even crazy kids haven't scratched them yet.
Link is at moshimonde .com under film protectors. (Can't link yet. Still on a new account)

Galaxy S3 has Gorilla Glass 2, so I use it without any screen protector.. but I am thinking of buying one hearing news from you guys...
I took off screen protector (curved crystal) It scratched to easy I think what would scratch this is putting it in your pocket with change or keys. Or setting it flat where there is grit or fine pieces of sand. But this screen is pretty scratch resilient

I am in the market for a waterproof case. I love having multiple cases and this is one i dont have. I have been looking at both the lifeproof nuud and otterbox preserver. They both look like really nice cases but I'm worried a bit about sound quality. I really like the fact the lifeproof doesn't have a built in screen protector but read on amazon, like I'm worried about, affects sound quality. I was trying to find the OB on amazon but the only one listed is at 339$ and doesn't have any reviews.
My question is what are your experiences with either case. Thanks for the feedback guys.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
Ordered this thing with some trepidation when it first came out.
Waterproof YES
Great protection YES.
Touch functions work well YES.
Sound out - listen to music or calls Yes and quality is okay.
Sound in - speaking on calls - nearly inaudible to person on the other end!
If you use your phone as, well, a phone you MUST use some bluetooth headset/mic or it's a no go.
I was really hoping that this wouldn't be the case, but figured it would be - as virtually all 'waterproof' cases for any device I have just cannot transmit VOICE sound 'IN'.
But hey it is waterproof and provides superp protection. I'll just have to remember to put the case on before I need it.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I was looking at that one as well like I said. I've always had good luck with otterbox. The only thing I don't like about in comparison to the lifeproof is the LP is 6.6ft @ 1hr while the OB is only half an hour and then OB has a built in screen protector. I really hate built in screen protectors.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
I've got a lifeproof nuud and I have no complaints. The first one I bought, I had the sound issues that other people on this forum has had. I replaced it and the call quality was damn near crystal clear. I recently had to get a warranty replacement because my USB port cover broke off, and the new one I have now works perfectly also. Another thing that really stands out is their customer service. I called to see where I could buy additional screen protectors and they sent me 3 for free. This last time I called for a replacement, they sent me a brand new case in the box with really no questions asked. I haven't worked up the balls to put my phone underwater yet because I had a bad experience with a casio g'rock when I tried that. But I'm sure it'll come. I recommend giving the lifeproof nuud case a shot, I doubt you'll be let down. I know I wasnt.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
As much as I like cases I think I'll buy both. I just bought the nuud on amazon for 50 and next day Aired it for like an extra 4 bucks. Stoked about it arriving and once more otters pop up on amazon I'm going to buy one of those as well.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
I've had both. I started with Lifeproof and went through two Frē cases because of the bad audio quality. I then went with the Preserver. I've been through two of those as well. It's an awesome case, but the mesh covers on the speakers tear off within a few days. My second one only lasted a day in tact before getting ripped off just by pulling it out of my pocket. I took the first one back and got a refund from Walmart, and still have the replacement from Ottetbox. I just super glued the mesh back on.
I gave the Lifeproof another shot with the Nüüd case and couldn't be happer. Call quality is great, and no screen protector to get those Newton rings or "rainbows" between the glass and screen protector.
If you go with the Nüüd but want to buy in store, pick it up at Best Buy. They honored Amazons price of $52.99.
Hell I started out paying $100 from Verizon with the water protection plan. After getting screwed around about wanting to return the case because it was defective, I ended up only paying $60 for it. $50 is a he'll of a deal

The Incipio doesn't close properly with the battery cover of the phone on. If you take it off, it closes, but the screen cover doesn't contact the screen properly and loses touch sensitivity. Also, the tempered glass protector has the worst rainbowing effect imo.

So far the Lifeproof gets my vote as the best for me. I absolutely love the overall design of the Otterbox, but the speakers are a big design issue. If they come up with a fix, it'll be a hit. Out of all of them I've tried, I felt the most protected with that one. Speakers and button response though, hats off to LP.

I agree. I love my obex case. Very secure and keeps your device safe. Very waterproof, I literally run my phone under water to clean it. Screen very responsive. Only issue is the capacitive buttons take a getting used to. Require a bit more finger coverage.

I have the white / grey cause I don't like dark colors on my phone as they absorb sun light and heat up your device. But they are designed very nicely. Only downside is the white rubber seems to absorb the dye from my jeans xD prolly can clean that up with bleach tho.

Yeah it's not real leather...what, you thought you'd buy a $700 device and it would come with a few inches of leather?
/sarcasm lol, it really is messed up like how our phones are plastic and not alluminized
But it's plastic lol, full plastic.

Reasons plastic covers are good is that if you drop your phone and your cover cracked or become ugly somehow, you can buy a replacement easily unlike the xperia z1/2 and iPhone 5s

leather vs aluminum
I have no problem with the plastic back, I think it feels nice and practical. I would much rather have real metal around the body, instead of the shiny plastic. This current material is the most sensitive to scratching and to getting chipped.
Metal body means a sealed phone almost all the time. I'll take a plastic body if it means I can get to the battery. It's what's inside that counts. I'll always choose capabilities over looks, and I'll never understand why people do different.
Click thanks if I helped you.

i am glad my phone is plastic rather than aluminum, the state my old htc desire was in after a few drops, it just dents and gets sharp edges, maybe the quality of the materials have improved since my desire days, but just my opinion , also the phone is lighter!
+10 for all the comments... The plastics used in todays Samsung devices have many more benefits than drawbacks... leather would have been impractical if not impossible so that's a non-issue... aluminum blocks and distorts signal and dents very easily on a drop... plastics keep the cost down when replacing back covers and allow accessibility, good signal characteristics, resilience, and many options for fit and finish.... I wouldn't change a thing

To be honest, I really like it this way. I just hope it lasts though.
plastic or not just get a good cover (you may find metal covers) and forget about the problem, the phone is sturdy enough well built no crackling or so and so light in weight due to that plastic and have nice specifications top notch,i do not like leather for the sake of animals !!!! hahaha
It's called a FAUX Leather look for a reason...
It clearly says Faux Leather in the specs. So if you feel cheated, you should've read the specs.
I like to use my phone without a case, but the stock battery cover has a low coefficient of friction. Also, I'm not a fan company logos.
The fix:
Using a Scotch Bright scoring pad I rubbed the cover, using even pressure, first vertically then horizontally. It took about 20 minutes to achieve the desired effect.
-phone now sticks to the hand
-company logos removed
-cover is the same color but less reflective

I too don't like using cases per se, but the only reason I do is because I worry that I'll scratch the camera lens as the stock battery cover practically sits flush with the lens itself.
Has anyone ever scratched their lens? I really want to take the slim skin/case thing I have off the phone but I know with my luck I'll scratch the camera lens the first time I put the phone down on my desk lol!
I don't like cases either but one you may like is the Spigen.com Neo Hybrid for our phone.
Very slim and light weight. It is just thick enough to keep the lens from contact and allows you to set the phone face down without touching.
I bought mine from Amazon.com for just over $20
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
My lens is fine and my phone receives a lot of abuse.
The Neo Hybrid is a beautiful case. Stopped using it because it makes my phone skip out of my pocket when I workout.
Order Spigen from Amazon and not their site. My case took over a month to be delivered. Spigen never returned any of my emails:/
So I lost my phone out of my pocket while riding my bike. Sprinting approx 40km up a hill. It jumped out, hit the road. And slid into the bushes. Front of the phone looks new back has some pretty bad scratches. But everything is pretty much fine. No dents no marks on screen. Was in a dot view case. A few scratches on the case and they instantly separated when impacting the ground, which kind of sucked.
That's funny because this feels like the most fragile android I've owned in 5 years. Mainly because my first one lived in my pocket but the camera still managed to get scratched to the point to where it was hard to find a spot on it that wasn't scratched. Now I don't feel comfortable carrying my phone at work. I carried my s4 everywhere with me for a year and not one scratch on the camera lens. This is my first phone with a screen protector on the camera lens.
That is why I have an otter box and a really expensive, tough screen protector. If you're planning on biking with your phone loose in your pocket, you may want to invest in those also!

ya the dot view case is cool but hardly serves the purpose of an actual case.
Should be a criminal offense to use a case for this phone.
Try and get a pair of arms not growing out of one's behind so the droppage is minimized.

Cases actually assist this phone in other ways than just protection. For one, they make the touchscreen less susceptible to undesired palm touches when using it one handed, and can hide the loose volume rocker issue many people have.

I thought I had a ton of scratches on my lens,I would wipe it off with a soft cloth and they wouldn't wipe off. Well today while sitting bored I just took my sleeve and rubbed with some pressure for a good 5 minutes. All those marks that looked like scratches all came of . Might try some alcohol on a qtip when I get home.
going back to the original op issue. I use the dot case when not biking and I use a otter box defender case mounted to the handle bars when riding. So far the otter box works very nice and does not come off on the bike ride. It takes around a minute to put the phone in the case every ride, but nothing to long.
one added bonus about the mounted otter box and m8. When listing to a talk podcast I sometimes do not use headphones, the speakers are plenty loud.
