Yeah it's not real leather...what, you thought you'd buy a $700 device and it would come with a few inches of leather?
/sarcasm lol, it really is messed up like how our phones are plastic and not alluminized

But it's plastic lol, full plastic.

This post is a joke, right? ut was announced even before the phone was even launched that the back was plastic, but made to look like it was leather... it took you half a year to notice it?

Looks like a joke isn't it! but what do u think if it's made of real leather would it last long enough heat water n dirt etc..it's all about indurance n leather is not one of them materials to compete..aluminuim draw back is weight n signals distortion ..but u can always have the best aluminuim covers out there
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk

Reasons plastic covers are good is that if you drop your phone and your cover cracked or become ugly somehow, you can buy a replacement easily unlike the xperia z1/2 and iPhone 5s

leather vs aluminum
I have no problem with the plastic back, I think it feels nice and practical. I would much rather have real metal around the body, instead of the shiny plastic. This current material is the most sensitive to scratching and to getting chipped.

Metal body means a sealed phone almost all the time. I'll take a plastic body if it means I can get to the battery. It's what's inside that counts. I'll always choose capabilities over looks, and I'll never understand why people do different.
Click thanks if I helped you.

i am glad my phone is plastic rather than aluminum, the state my old htc desire was in after a few drops, it just dents and gets sharp edges, maybe the quality of the materials have improved since my desire days, but just my opinion , also the phone is lighter!

+10 for all the comments... The plastics used in todays Samsung devices have many more benefits than drawbacks... leather would have been impractical if not impossible so that's a non-issue... aluminum blocks and distorts signal and dents very easily on a drop... plastics keep the cost down when replacing back covers and allow accessibility, good signal characteristics, resilience, and many options for fit and finish.... I wouldn't change a thing

Guy's chill out, in gsmarena they mentioned leather that's why I thought so

Don't trip bro... it's XDA and they will jump all over any little mistake here... makes everybody feel smart and superior... like we really have a life

Using samsung devices since s1, have to say this was the best back sammy has ever made.

To be honest, I really like it this way. I just hope it lasts though.

plastic or not just get a good cover (you may find metal covers) and forget about the problem, the phone is sturdy enough well built no crackling or so and so light in weight due to that plastic and have nice specifications top notch,i do not like leather for the sake of animals !!!! hahaha

It's called a FAUX Leather look for a reason...
It clearly says Faux Leather in the specs. So if you feel cheated, you should've read the specs.

Rubber feet to protect the glass and unmuffled sound

So I wanted to protect the back glass with a screen protector since I would generally be laying the phone down on it's back. I got one of those "apply when wet" guards and it went on ok. The only problem is, the material is so soft, it basically makes a seal on a flat table which cuts off the speaker completely. I only noticed when I was missing text messages, that the sound was significantly reduced from laying it down.
So I got these rubber feet So far, so good. I was afraid they would come right off, but they are on there pretty good. If they do come off, I still have 92 left! I might remove my back screen protector, if these work out. They aren't too hard to get used to when holding, but they certainly don't look the greatest. I attached some pics.

OP's idea is amazing! Agreed that the circular ones look ugly, but say something like two thin strips along the length of the phone, or two horizontal ones along the top and bottom curves?
How does one go about getting custom shapes like that?

agree, dont really like the idea of those rubber nubs, but I would think something a little less aggressive or strips running down the sides or tops. I like the idea, just not as pronounced.
I thought of this some time ago and actually sourced some 3M manufactured ones in transparent polyurethane with an acrylic adhesive. They make them as small as 6.4mm X 1.9mm. I have not found anywhere that sells them in anything less than bulk so I didn't order any. I am waiting to try a few more cases before I decide whether to do this, but am pretty happy with the diztronic TPU for now. My Poetic hardback is supposed to be here tomorrow. I am guessing that if the Poetic works well, and the phone will fit in it with the 3M pads on, I may go for it.
i bet you could find something at michaels.
It's not something I'd do, because how the device looks is a major selling point for me and this doesn't look great.
Not saying it's bad though, it's actually a very clever idea. I do worry about the back getting scratched and the muffled speaker is annoying, so nice job man

I have some extra feet from an old laptop that were supposed to go in the four corners of the screen so the screen wouldn't press against your keyboard. They're maybe 0.5cm wide. Definitely been thinking about doing this myself.
However, I got the bumper instead. Which is now making me think I might plastidip the backside of it so it becomes uber grippy.

Honestly, if you were gong to do something like this, I would suggest a few things.
Go to a cabinetry or hardware store, to look for the bumpers. You would be surprised at what they have.
A better solution, which I was thinking of is dynamat, the non aluminum version.
Take a sheet of plain paper, use a pencil to make an exact tracing of the back of the phone. Use the rubbing method to make sure you know the exact edges.
Overlay onto the dynamat, and use an exact knife to cut out your new back, and add sound channels. But it seems like a lot of work though.

Why so much buzz on plastic body for s4

Well i have been reading around the comments of the people about , how silly samsung is for making s4 all plastic when there are other phones with a good overall build quality.
Well i wont compare it with the sales of samsung but i think they have other reasons. Well i agree that metal always looks and feel great. But dont u think that plastic body is much durable. Well i have never seen any phone breaking in 2 years. People with s2 s3 notes are allbhappy with their phones. Just some scratch issues. So its bearable.

definitely a big plus for samsung here is that if you do damage your case, you can just buy a new one.
if i had a GS4 i definitely wouldn't be using a 3rd party case for that reason.
my problem is that the plastic used by samsung in the gs3 and probably the gs4 is that while it may be durable - im sure it is - it just looks cheap, and that matters to me
my HTC incredible s is plastic, but its like rubberised plastic, and i think its great - it feels nice and durable, non-slippy and i think it feels like a good quality material - maybe thats just me
Actually samsung is so successful with ita galaxy line. That they are so scared of trying even a little change to it. Just like apple was scared to change ios. So they will make money from this same strategy, same looks and builds until sales drop. Till then we all have to agree with their plan.

Mostly anal OCD types who really should not care because people who are THAT concerned about "wearing" these devices probably spend a lot more on Otter Boxes and "screen protectors" and never see the case or use the smooth glass. All the moaning about metal vs plastic is fun to read though.
Those of us who USE the phones without cases and "protectors" could not care less about metal or plastic and may even prefer the lighter plastic. We care about what is INSIDE...not outside. These are not "fashion statements"

Most peoples argument is, it's a flagship device and every part of it should feel 'premium' and plastic just doesn't...
The S4 body is polycarbonate (no different than devices like the Lumia 920 or the One X, except for the finish). The front of the device is Gorilla Glass 3 and the inside of the device is a magnesium frame like their previous devices (lighter and more durable than aluminum).

. "Flagship" is a matter of ones own definition Flagship to me is still the Note 2 . I don;t see anything in the S4 that trumps my Note 2. In this case the note 2 is the flagship device still. There are no rules for "flagship" devices. They are only flagship because they are the latest not the prettiest. Plastic for a device one may keep a whole year is a good business decision. Samsung will sell millions of them as usual. More than "flashy metal" Sonys and HTCs.

Metal may be stronger, however is does a piss poor job of absorbing impact and doesn't sprint back to it's original state. I would rather have the plastic absorb the impact than the circuits in the phone taking a beating. I skin all my stuff anyone so I am not worried about scratches.
so what about the sides where S4 has metal? Will that not pick up scratches/nicks or not bend when it will fall?
Or is that it is ok where Samsung deems it ok and not where it doesnt.
In any case, I've seen many drop tests on youtube and S3 seems to do far worse than iphone5. shame on Samsung

I might be wrong but from what I have read that is not metal around the sides it is also plastic coated to look like metal just like the GS3.
I'm the type that puts the invisibleshield on
the screen and the phone in an Otterbox Defender case. Mostly because I like the heavy durable feel. But also because I like to keep the phone in near mint condition. Then when the case cracks or looks crappy I rock the phone naked. Right now my Samsung Captivate is naked and in awesome condition for being so old. I like having a scratch free phone after several years of use. To me it's like insurance, figure if I'm going to keep it a few years, which I do for ipods and phones, I may as well protect the investment.
I could go either way with plastic or aluminum. Both have their ups and downs, so I don't gripe about either. Plastic doesn't dent like aluminum, but aluminum helps dissipate heat better.
I also hate the feel of my wedding ring against a steel phone when fishing it out of my pocket. Small, but to me it makes me cringe. Like nails on a chalk board.

Can we really say that metal is better that plastic? If it was true, why did they invented it?
Here’s a little story.
Two men are on a battlefield, first man’s name is Harold Thomas Campbell (Lets call him H.T.C. for short) and the second man is called Samuel Forsyth (Let’s call him S4 for short). The two men are given the choice of two high tech armors. One is metal armor, the other is polycarbonate (light weight bulletproof) armor. H.T.C. takes the metal one and S.4. takes the polycarbonate. H.T.C. starts laughing at S.4. and said, "Your armor doesn't look premium". S4 reply “let’s see on the battlefield”. It’s the final battle against their sworn enemy, the terrible Icarus Fontana (let’s just call him ifon for short). The fight begun. Ifon brings his large army of magic metal robots. They have the power to mesmerize inferior minds. HTC and S4 are in smaller number but their android army can adapt to any situation. The battle is long and furious. Ifon is sending his elite guard called, #5. The #5 gives a quick scare but the android army counter all #5 efforts. During the battle the high tech armors starts to lose power, so S4 quickly removes his back panel and changes his power source. H.T.C.’s power is getting dangerously low but his heavy metal armor doesn’t allow him to replace the power source. He needs to find an electrical outlet nearby. H.T.C. and S4 receive many hits. HTC’s armor is all dented and scratched but still resist. S4’s armor looks untouched. The battle is raging on and S.4. is killing enemies at an incredible pace. S4 is trying to help HTC but the armor is just too low on power and too heavy to carry. HTC dies on the battlefield. Ifon’s army is retreating. S4 won this fight but the battle is not over.

This is the thing dude. When you are already having dream success and that too in a hell of a competitive environment, you don't really need to change things all over. Just imagine apple today decides to bring major open source changes in ios like android or major changes in design, more than half of the customers will dislike it. It's because they are used to this closed environment. Hence making major changes with just 1 phone is not that easy.
Samsung has already replied to this criticism. Plastic is easy to make in mass production and its durable. Like it or not but it will be like this. To shut the mouth, Samsung is giving hell of other things in both software and hardware department. This should be enough to please us.

S4 Build Quality : Plastic > Aluminum

I've had all sorts of Android phones. I loved all the metal ones (Moto and HTC) and stuck with the Galaxy for the developer community, camera, and not getting rid of SD cards and removable batteries. Although my next upgrade batteries and internal memory should be good enough to let that go. I loved the One but 4 MP is 4 MP when your not indoors at night.
I won't let any comments on build quality bother me again. Forget shattering in my pocket, I have dropped my GS4 numerous times with zero effect. I use a $10 case. And now, I ran it over with my car. On concrete. The kind with tar and rocks all in it. Diagonally, straight over the entire phone with tire tracks on it.
Zero damage to screen, all sensors work normally, not even a scratch on the case or screen or edges. And it even popped out of the case while being run over. I guess it's true there is a reason they use plastic for heavy duty stuff in commercial tools and equipment, and aluminum is soda can material.
See attached pics.
Ya and function is more important than appearance anyways

Plastic is fine with me, every phone, plastic or metal will break if the screen lands just right. Despite all the claims to the contrary, I find the S4 to be great. The video below should debunk most nay sayers.

I completely agree that plastic > metal for phone cases. A metal case on a phone is a serious MINUS to me.

Wow. I'm even happier now that I chose this over the One.
i kept reading reviews about the s4 about lower end build quality this, plastic lower build quality that, etc. etc.... but have been impressed by how the phone feels. feels solid. i am constantly amazed how that little thin plastic back clicks in so well and feels so solid. main reason i chose the s4 over the htc one is accessible sd card slot and battery. that's it. i'll take this kind of plastic build over unibody metal every time if it means i get to put in myown sd card and be able to switch batteries.
I got the One at launch and just got an S4 a week ago, was trying to decide which to keep... Picked up my One last night after using S4 all week and it suddenly felt heavy and clunky. I'm keeping the S4.

I'm in the same boat, been using the One for a month or so and picked up a GS4 during the half off sale. While my decision will come down more to software than hardware (need to find the right ROM for GS4, still working through this Loki stuff >.<), I definitely prefer the in-hand feel of the One. At a mm or so less wide and having a curved back, it just feels like it fits better to me. I have found that the weight is basically a nonissue, though I know some people get really worked up one way or the other.
As for plastic vs. metal, obviously people who say "plastic is flimsy" are way off, as it is very sturdy, but the One definitely looks nicer after a day of use than the GS4--the glossy finish on the GS4 just soaks up fingerprints like there's no tomorrow. I guess most people use cases, but I've always been a naked-in-pocket kind of guy so that's my biggest beef with the GS4's shell. I wish Samsung would just use a nice matte polycarbonate like some of the Lumias or the One X.
Oh well, it's still a fun debate.

how did nobody take the time to ask OP HOW THA HECK DID YOU RUN YOUR S4 WITH YOUR CAR????
To the guy who called this a fanboy post: I've owned every major brand of android phone of all materials and my wife bought an HTC 8x at my suggestion. I clearly stated I got the s4 assuming build quality to be something I had to deal with. I felt the need to post because I ran it over with a 3500 lb car. That's not fanboy. That's credit.
And yeah I ran it over leaving the lake packing my car lol I set it down on the ground and got my kid, dog, and stuff in. Stupid but true. I'm aware I got lucky but I've ruined phones doing far less. Including my aluminum OG Droid. My wife's 8x shattered on the first drop with a polycarb body. My opinion stands, stupidity and all.

It's on ebay for a bit cheaper and it's not waterproof. Just resistant. So could take splashes and stuff like that but wouldn't immerse for any extended period of time.
Lifeproof doesn't exist yet, but if it did, it's a 6.6 foot drop. Most of the heavy duty cases are 2 meter drop tested.

Lifeproof doesn't exist yet, but if it did, it's a 6.6 foot drop. Most of the heavy duty cases are 2 meter drop tested.

2 meters is quite close to 6.6 feet anyways

For me it is to big, i like small cases......
I think it looks good and doesn't look too bulky for the protection it offers.

casefanatic.com has it for $44 anyone order from this site?
Don't order from casefanatic, they jack the price up. Even for the love mei bumper they put a $20+ price tag when you can get it for less than $10 on ebay. If you need a cheaper price let me know and I'll find one for you guys

This does look good. I usually don't go for cases like this myself. But having gorilla glass instead of plastic crap makes it more desirable than the defender.
They jack the price up? I was commenting to tell you guys that they have the case at a much lower price.

I second that price jack up

there appears to be a knockoff of it already that can be had for $30
http://dx-box.com/black-lunatik-taktik-extreme-case-for-samsung-galaxy-s4-1-pack-retail-packaging.html
at that site they call it the original case but it appears to be a chinese knockoff(peek written on the side, whatever the hell that means), although who really can tell, side note, i wonder how the chinese feel about having their own designs ripped off, karmas a bittch eh?
this site appears to have actual pictures of the peek knockoff(same as above?)
http://www.casefanatic.com/samsung-2/galaxy-s4/case-galaxy-s4/coque-galaxy-s4-pepk-ultimate-3-layer-metal-armour-anti-shock-drop-protection/
that same site also carries what appears to be the original for comparison
http://www.casefanatic.com/samsung-2/galaxy-s4/coque-galaxy-s4-love-mei-waterproof-anti-shock-drop-protection-metal/
the original design(as best as i can figure), which assuming that video was not faked really appears to be well thought out and executed can be bought
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Love-Mei-Shockproof-Rugged-Protection-Case-Galaxy-S4-BLACK-w-RED-Port-Cover-/251314727626?pt=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item3a83866aca
for $60
on that casefanatic site(dont know weather or not to trust this site any experience with it?)
or from the oem manufacturer
http://lovemeicase.com/pro.asp?id=15
the wait appears to be long, and no one appears to have actually gotten their hands on one of these, either the fake or the original, on the ebay listing they talk about how the peek case interferes with the proximity sensor, and other things, the mfg website has what appears to be a comparison between the original and the knockoff going over each of the points individually, and i am skeptical of buying something, especially something Chinese made that is supposed to be a quality product, that noone seems to have gotten their hands on but the design really impresses me, and im a sucker for exposed hex bolts and machined aluminum, at the moment im trying to decide between this case and the sedio
http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-obex-case-holster-black-p/bd2-hwssgs4-br.htm
because i broke the screen on my gnex and im not letting that happen again

its poetic irony that something called love mei is described as badass
I just recieved mine from dx-box. now the case feels like a brick which is good. .. bit the screen protector is not gorilla glass. Its thick plastic. Which makes it hard to touch things on the side of the screen and back button is hard to use. My touch sensitivity is on high and still the same. I recommend this if your patient. But otherwise get it from the company which I'm going to do.

Yeah no problem. Would you like the process of it? Un boxing and putting phone in? Or just pictures of the case?

I'd really like to get a look at the build quality and how well/tightly/securely the phone fits in it

The back if the G-Note3 is not like soft leather it is HARD textured plastic

Well, I got my note 3 last night and the back is a small disappointment because almost all reviews mentioned it is like leather , but it only looks 60 % like leather.
I don't have a problem with plastic but this is just a not for future buyers. . Have a look at the device before buying...

Same question. Black is suppose to feel like leather better than white for some reason. Hold out for someone on Etsy or a company to come out with real leather doors. It'll happen sooner or later.

yes, color is relevant, some users report that black offers the most quality texture.
Hmmm, this post suggests that he got black. That's surprising (and disappointing), most of the reviews I saw were favorable of the feel of the faux leather, at least the black ones.

Guys, it's still plastic. Many previews mentioned it. Although they said that it's better than previous glossy plastic, but it's still thin plastic with leathered texture and stitching.
So don't get your hope too high or you will be disappointed.
*sigh*......real leather=damaged internals!

Where do you get this idea from? Leather is insanely tough and can take a hit way better than plastic. Are you basing this assumption on experience or was it just a quick thought that ran through your head?

Who said it had to be soft leather? Look at motorcycle saddle bags made of leather. Thats some tough sh**. I've seen guys go down during rides and have their bags drug across the ground at 50+ mph. Besides scratches from the road rash it didn't even get through. There are different type of leather that range from soft to stiff.

Put that leather back over a gun metal door....OK!!!! But all alone....no bueno.
Who cares..... I have seen multiple reviews that talk about the back and all I them mention the back is a textured plastic so why the surprise? I mean if it bothers you that much return the phone!

I played with an in store demo yesterday and the black back wasn't fooling me. It's ever so slightly softer than my Note 1 back but I was disappointed it wasn't less obvious it was plastic.
Still the design looks better than the Note 1 and 2 and the screen is decent, you have to be really picky to see the difference between that and the HTC One screen (I have great eyes too)

I have the black note 3. I can tell you for a fact the back cover is not leather. It's feels like plastic if you tap your fingernails on it. However it is a big improvement im both looks and feel over the glossy back covers.

Gotta love these super useful threads, where OP starts the crap, then disappears, but tons of others, keep giving attention to it......
.
Samsung is bragging about the leather like back .. so i just wanted to point out what i thought about it. this a big reason for people to support their decision on buying the phone.
I checked out a demo..its like a plastic back.just looks different...and from a distance you woullnt even realise its supposed to look like leather
Leather is an insulator. Think about the adverse effects of what too much heat would do to the phone. First, the warmer the battery, the shorter it's life. Then, after a while of extreme heat build up you're inevitably going to start seeing hardware failures. Thus real leather snuggled up to the internals is probably not the best idea.
