Guys,
Im looking for instructions on how to root the Note 10.1 by using a pc that is running Ubuntu (or any version of Linux for that matter). The tutorials Ive seen so far are using Windows and Odin.
I have rooted my galaxy Nexus by using the command line in Linux, but Im not sure if a similar procedure will work.
If any one has a link that they can share, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Wow your looking to do a lot of adb commands..

Lol Yeah : p also this is the wrong section . this Should have been posted in Q & A
Actually, it wouldn't be many at all. Should be similar to rooting the gnex.
I thought I was posting in the correct forum since it was about rooting.
If it's not right, mod, please move this post.

Think about this subforum as a "collection" of "library" with the information. A tutorial on how to root is welcome. A question on how to root goes to "Questions and answers".
When you go to a library, you don't want to see the record of all people who has looked for all of the books mixed with the books, do you?
WTB: I am also interested in that tutorial

I just rooted my Note 10.1 from Ubuntu using Heimdall 1.4rc with the HighOnAndroid CWM recovery. I can't post outside links since I'm a new user, but I'll try to post a more detailed tutorial in a few days.
yep Heimdall works just as well (if not better) than odin.
You could of just put the exynos exploit app onto your memory card and ran that. As long as its not the latest round of JB4.1.2 on your tablet you can root it REALLY easily. Then when you upgrade, You use Mobile ODIN. This will allow you to keep root access.
No stuffing around with the PC unless you download the app on that and transfer to the tab, but you can do that with your tablet...

They are practically the same, but methods for rooting devices change per device. The Xoom requires a little extra work.
Do you have the JDK and Android Development Kit installed on your PC?
Are you comfortable with command lines?
Can you afford to purchase another Xoom if you brick this one?

Alright, so I previously had a GS3 rooted and didn't have any problems going through the process. I am trying to root again however I keep getting a permission denied log. I have been following max lee's video how to root gs3 on mac and have googled this, cannot find a whole lot of info.
Any advice?
Thanks
This is the new method after the OTA update:

Just reread and see that you're using a mac, which I'm not familiar with any methods that work.

Is this going to be compatible with mac?
No that one is not compatible with mac. I dont know why they haven't made Odin 3.07 for mac yet! Frustrating.
It is very frustrating! Do you know any alternatives to go about this with a mac?

None on xda. You'll need someone with a Windows pc to properly root.

They did create Odin for the Mac it is called Heimdall. I just googled that as I am typing this post. It is not hard to do some research before saying that there isn't any alternatives for the Mac.

I have a question about my galaxy s3 sch-i535 model from Verizon Wireless. I have understood that it looks easiest to do this process via windows, and I have messaged and inquired with many ppl about the best way to complete this process using a mac. Is there a guide I can use to do this? I've used windows computers before to do this and have eooted a motorola bionic but I havent been successful in finding a guide for doing this. Any help would greatly be appreciated (I actually even searched this site or tried to at least). Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you want you can send me a email at [email protected] . Thanks again!

For one your in the wrong section my good ol fellow and 2 the rooting boot loader unlock procedure only works on windows. I too use Mac. So here is how to solve the issue. Do it from a windows PC or get VMWare or Parallels and run a virtual machine of windows on your Mac. Note windows installation disk, .IMG is not included. Good luck.

Yes, there are guides out there to root your S3 from a Mac. Can you search this site? Yes, you can. Can you search using the all mighty Google? No, you cannot. Please utilize ALL of your available, and free resources before posting.
Here's your answer; all of these links by searching "rooting S3 mac" on Google and youtube

Unfortunately you can't root with CASUAL on jelly bean. If on 4.1.1 OTA you have to use ODIN, unless they get Heimdall working.

Ok please be gentle, just a suggestion. I have recently bought a mk809ii, and really wanted to add a custom rom like finless, but fell short due to issues with drivers on windows 7 laptops. So I managed to root my device by installing Cwm. Now my question is surely there must be a way of installing a rom via cmw, how is this impossible?, because I really want a custom rom. Also now that am rooted, what are the essential things you havemmanaged to do with root, apart from using titanium back up? So basically just some post root tips, apps are very much welcome thanks in advance.
You can install DroidMote which lets you control it with an Android phone or tablet.

Hello everyone - I need to do a shell root of a Verizon Galaxy S3. I don't want to lose any user data, such as SMS, pictures, etc. Someone had recommended Kingo to me but I can't see to get it pass the "downloading driver" stage. It simply tells me to disconnect the USB cable and stops there.
Is there another program available that will allow me to shell root the S3 and preserve all my data?
I apologize for the newbie questions - thanks for the help!

You just want to root your S3? None of our primary root exploits delete /sdcard which is internal storage. Use Casual or Open1your1eyes0 root exploit that utilizes Odin.

Yep, I just need to root it. Again, newbie here, but is Casual or the Open1yourEyes0 pretty straight forward to use? Does it require I load anything onto the phone in advance?

Casual is very simple to use but requires you to have the latest Java installed to your computer (Java 7 or newer). Works on Windows 7 and OSX 10.8.6 and no clue about OSX ML or Windows 8 compatibility. Here's a link to the older Casual that should work:
