New to Xoom. Need help with rooting and such. - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my wifi only Xoom today. I also have a Motorola Atrix, which is rooted and running a custom rom. I was reading on here about rooting and kernels and other things and I didn't understand it. Can someone please help me understand the differences between the Xoom tablet and an android phone. Thanks

They are practically the same, but methods for rooting devices change per device. The Xoom requires a little extra work.
Do you have the JDK and Android Development Kit installed on your PC?
Are you comfortable with command lines?
Can you afford to purchase another Xoom if you brick this one?

I suggest you learn, it isn't hard at all, and will help you out in the future.

Rooting is very simple and is basically a copy and paste operation by following this thread.

Go to YouTube and lookup Nat3mil. He
has great step by step videos of the whole process. U'll need to spend some money in Market too for ROM Manager, Root Explorer and a few others. Get the MR2 radio not MR1. Good Luck!
Use the google machine! One click root. It does the adb for you in 3 steps.
THUNDERBOLT
Is the process the same with a stock mr2 ruu? From what i understood update using the other mr2 radio leak then update to one of the the roms.

I knew nothing about ADB but rooted my phone in about an hour.

weekend to the thudnerbolt and will be looking
to root my device as well
I've been searching to get the answer to my wifi
question but i can't seem to find a definite answer.
- after rooting, what do you use to get wifi tether?
pdanet, android wifi tether any others you'd recommend?
Nice I'm waiting to root my phone like I did my DX with just an app

Pretty easy to do and if you watch the video and do it step by step you can't go wrong...so easy a caveman could do it.
Congrats Carlito, welcome to the rooted world. You'll never go back.
Coliny, once I rooted I got Rom Manager immediately and a few other root apps. I flashed the radio after flashing new rom - worked fine.

I agree. Learning how adb works is a huge help when it comes to problems down the road. Not hard to understand the basics.

MEIYING M10 8-inch Tablet w Android 4.0.4 (ROOT Question)

Greetings,
I lived on the edge and just bought a MEIYING M10 8-inch tablet; got it just root and play; I'm no beginner with computers by any means; what got me on the idea was rooting my wife's Nook Color. More importantly what really got me on the ROOT rant here was I can't use Netflix on this thing -- everything else works fine. So since this sucker is new from China, I'm wondering if there are any ROMs out there i can try that will work with this device; I'm not talking about THEMES...i'm talking about legitimate root packages that could be compatible with this tird. Any ideas would be great...bfn...Jim

Rooting/unlocking the vzw gs3 sch-i535 with a Macbook running lion OSX?

I have a question about my galaxy s3 sch-i535 model from Verizon Wireless. I have understood that it looks easiest to do this process via windows, and I have messaged and inquired with many ppl about the best way to complete this process using a mac. Is there a guide I can use to do this? I've used windows computers before to do this and have eooted a motorola bionic but I havent been successful in finding a guide for doing this. Any help would greatly be appreciated (I actually even searched this site or tried to at least). Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you want you can send me a email at [email protected] . Thanks again!

For one your in the wrong section my good ol fellow and 2 the rooting boot loader unlock procedure only works on windows. I too use Mac. So here is how to solve the issue. Do it from a windows PC or get VMWare or Parallels and run a virtual machine of windows on your Mac. Note windows installation disk, .IMG is not included. Good luck.

Yes, there are guides out there to root your S3 from a Mac. Can you search this site? Yes, you can. Can you search using the all mighty Google? No, you cannot. Please utilize ALL of your available, and free resources before posting.
Here's your answer; all of these links by searching "rooting S3 mac" on Google and youtube

Unfortunately you can't root with CASUAL on jelly bean. If on 4.1.1 OTA you have to use ODIN, unless they get Heimdall working.

how did you manage to root this tablet... I'm stuck in a bootloop, so first I need to go to recovery mode (which I cannot find)... Can I put firmware on SD card and install OS again to fix this?

Superboot also didn't work for me.
Custom recovery like cwm and then flashing supersu is better in my opinion.

Firstly great choice leaving that other OS behind that's the best decision you have made.
Secondly the moto g is another great decision as its an amazing phone..
Yes root it, install xposed framework and gravitybox and customize your heart out.
I followed the guide over at modaco forums to root mine:
http://www.modaco.com/forum/751-motorola-moto-g/
There are two methods to root either work fine.

Ok I think the phone is fine, in apps I now have SuperSU.
Ok I now get a warning when I start the phone, so bootloader is unlocked, and I have superSU installed in apps, whats the next step, sorry for the newbie questions.

IMHO, you should use your phone without making those hacks for a while. You need root if you want to change something really specific on your phone or want to run some really specific apps. The vast majority of people doesn't need any of those.
That said, since you already rooted your phone, you might want to try using Xposed Framework (with gravitybox), Greenify and Titanium Backup. Search for those to see if that is something you might think is useful.

Ok just in case I mess something up along the way how do I do a factory reset?
I would read on xda a good bit before attempting to do anything as it's not for the faint hearted but as soon as you have enough knowledge you'll be fine.
I'm the sort of person who likes to root but even I haven't gotten around to unlocking the bootloader on the Moto G yet and I have it a month now, I only use it as a second phone after my HTC One, plus I only use a tablet and not a PC /Laptop so you can't do anything like this on a tablet which frankly I find bizzare given more people use tablets now then desktop computers and laptops but anyway read, read and read more and you'll be fine
