[Q] MT6575 GT-I9300 convert to English - General Questions and Answers

HI all. I'm a noob. I did a search on the forum for GT-I9300 and MT6575 before posting here, and could not find a similar question. Hopefully this is the right place for this. This is my first ever post here, so apologies if I've stuffed anything up.
I recently bought a phone for my 14yo son. I'm a new user, so cannot post a link, but I got it from "A Happy Deal" in China", (I saw an advert on Facebook). I'm aware it's a cheap copy of a Samsung Galaxy S3, (It actually even shows the Samsung startup logo on boot), but I was willing to risk potential low built quality given it was 1/8th the price of a real one.
On the web site it said it was Android 4 before I bought it. It now says it's 2.3. And they won't give me a full refund, (offer was 50% refund and I had to pay postage). So I decided to keep it and use it anyway. I managed to change the display language to English, but there is no English locale or keyboard option. It appears to have Google Play store installed, but because I cant read Chinese, I cannot log in on it.
I've spent some time reading through various pages about MT65xx phones, and how to root them. But none of the instructions I've read so far seem to allow me to connect to this phone via USB except as a USB drive. What I would really like to do, if possible, is upgrade the ROM to Android 4, with full English support. Failing that, I would at least like to install an English locale and keyboard, so my son can use it.
I'm an IT guy, (and have been for well over 25 years), so have a reasonable understanding of flashing ROMs etc. But I have no experience with phones and modifying them. So if anyone can point me to step by step instructions to fix it I would be very grateful.
Rob.

Rooted G2x won't get past LG logo on reboot.

Before anyone chews me out for thinking I haven't researched this here, believe me I've already spent hours over the last couple days researching XDA and tried all kinds of things and I'm just at a loss for knowing what else I can do from what's available (some download links don't work etc.), and from what I remember from way back when I first rooted the phone. I take care of my developmentally disabled sister and don't have a lot of spare time to devote to researching this. No time and always stressed from my caregiver responsibilities. Not asking for sympathy, just understanding that I can't devote a lot of research time for this. I learned how to root the phone from XDA without bothering anyone, but this just has me stumped. Tried NVflash (this will flash the images to the phone, but still can't get past LG logo), LG updater / alternate updater tool (neither will see the phone),
I'm willing to pay for either an absolute certain fix with clear instructions and download links for any software needed that work, or possibly sending the phone to someone that can get the thing working again for a reasonable price. Keep in mind I can wait for a cheap broken phone on Ebay to replace the motherboard. I also luckily had another G2x that had Froyo and not rooted, but I decided to update it to GB even though the camera sucks. I uploaded two Youtube vids to show what's happening with it. I can't post links yet, but this is the extension for part 1 at Youtube: /watch?v=ulZzWFgNosY and part 2 :/watch?v=YVV9Vzbz0dg. Just ad these to the youttube url after the .com

After going to the store to get soup and remedies for my sister (just came down with a cold... sigh), I sat down at my computer and was disappointed that I didn't even get a response let alone an offer to help -NOT EVEN FOR PAY! So I went over what I'd done the last two days and figured it out. Phone works now, but the problem was the person's instructions were terrible. So no credit and no money. Sorry, I had to work too hard to work out what was not clearly instructed. There's a lot of that here I find. The person knows what they're talking about in their mind, but they sometimes fail to convey it clearly in written form and give instructions that are not easy to follow. Anyway, a general thanks is in order for XDA. :good:
Good to hear that your phone is working C:

Pretty sure a high majority of people that write the guides are in high school, so there's that.

[Q] [Help!] Video chat to answer lots of questions, general and device specific?

Hello! First off, thanks for having an awesome website like this, and forums full of help!
So as the thread title states, I'm looking for someone to video chat with so I can ask a bunch of questions. I am a slow reader, and have some eye strain issues, so I tend to avoid reading like the plague; so looking through lots of forum threads for each piece of information isn't a great option for me. The other reason why a vid-Q&A session would help me is because I really am pretty ignorant on most of this fancy cell-phone type of stuff, and may have a huge range of questions, from basic definitions, to device-specific possibilities, to program choices, etc. I don't do well learning stuff from reading, and am much more of a discussion-learner. Also, typing back-and-forth is also very time consuming, so I'm not huge on that sort q&a either (though obviously, if someone's willing to spend time helping me out, I'm appreciative of whatever way they help). Finally, the big crunch factor is time. I have 6 days to return this device, and I think I'll need more time than that (due to my schedule) to figure everything out on my own forum-searching. So I'm humbly asking if someone is available and willing to spend their time to make my work easier. I'd be greatly appreciative!
I need someone who speaks English. I'm in the Eastern time zone (US East coast). Please PM me if you're able to help!
Some of my question topics:
I bought a 'new' T-Mobile Galaxy S3 T999. But I'm seeing indications that the device is rooted or something. True?
Is my device disabled from downloading any updates, or just an issue with Samsung holding the current update?
The Root Explorer app shows all options in some oriental language. Is there a way to change that?
***When dialing to make a call, my older phone would allow me to search by name (so I'd hit 5646 and anyone named John, and other possible names would show up as options). My new phone doesn't do this, and I don't see an option anywhere for it. Is there a simple way to change this? (This is the question which started my search in the first place, bringing me here).
All Galaxy S3s are basically the same hardware? The only difference really in how things play out is the programming/OS?
My device has 4.1.2 T999UVDMD5. I read (here: ___support.t-mobile___.com/thread/44716___) that this OS is pretty crappy, and he's happy with the one he replaced it with. I need help figuring out whether switching up my OS is right for me, or no. I do see some lag in performance, and a bit of quick battery eating. Also not so happy with minor changes to the keyboard.
Where can I find layman's definitions of terms that people are throwing around? Like ROM, Firmware, Flashing, Odin, Kernel, etc. I assume that if I'm going to mess with my phone, I should know these things.
If all phones are created equal, and can be stripped down and dressed back up to function as desired, would it make more sense to return my $350 new S3 (non-contract), and buy a used one in good condition from Swappa for $200-300, and rework it?
Is buying from swappa safe? Seems kinda sketchy to me, in terms of reliability for returning a product if needed.
Like I said, lots of questions all over the place. Thanks in advance for reading and any help you can give! (especially to any tech guru's who aren't camera shy.

[Completed] Locked relative out of phone :(

Hey all, firstly, sorry this is a rushed post but I'm hoping I can get some advice and pointed in the right direction. I'll start by saying I'm fairly experienced in tech and with Android.
So, a family member was having problem with her new android phone (Samsung J ... 6, 5 or something, I can find out) so I said I'd just do a factory reset - there was nothing on there she was worried about losing).
Long story short, this new security feature (if stolen) where you can't just factory reset has completely screwed me over. They are not tech orientated and can not remember the original google login they made, and barely half of the security questions to remember the original google account. I just want to cry. What was a basic factory reset has turned out to looking like I've 'bricked' their phone. I obviously haven't but it doesn't look good. I've read there's an APK to skip this google sign in step, and I feel competent to do it, but I feel like things can only get worse by this point. There is still hope to reset the google account, but what is your experience using this skip sign in APK. It sounds too easy, for would be thieves, and I don't trust it much. I'm thinking this has gone far enough, I should just tell her to take it back to the provider (EE UK) She's only had it a month. Any idea if they can do this in store or it'll be sent off. Any other words of advice with this skip sign in APK; pulling hair out, thanks
EDIT: Am I right in thinking I can't contact google any further to get the original account back?

Greetings!
Thank you for using XDA Assist.
Having the correct phone model would be helpful here because there are different methods available for fixing this issue. Google will be of no help whatsoever. You can try to bring the device to an authorized Samsung repair center, if available. Also I do recommend bringing it back to the original place of purchase.
Good luck!
Thanks for your reply and sorry for mine being so slow. I guess I'm on my own with this one, but if you can point me to the most favoured guide for a Samsung J36 (I think that is J3 (6) I would appreciate it.
The APK method seems seems easy enough but I'm really worried it has been patched out, seeing as it's a relatively new phone. The last thing I want to do is make it worse. Could you advise how safe the APK method is? usual disclaimers aside
I went into EE today and they weren't much help; they said there's not much they can do, which I don't believe, if we can prove the phone is from them, only a month ago. Thanks for your help. Stress :S

I haven't seen one for the J3 specifically, as there isn't a specific forum for that model on XDA. May I recommend doing a search to see what turns up. I know that official Samsung repair centers can fix this problem.
Will do, thanks. I wanted to avoid paying for a fix but if it keeps things safe, so be it. I'd have to travel so hopefully they'd do it on the spot. ty

Seeking help. Novice user rooting advice. Feeling like a fool!

Hello all!
First of all I'll say that having spent several hours browsing the forums here I am in awe of what you're all able to achieve!
Anyway, here's my story...
My partner and I have not long moved to South Korea and, with my first paycheck here I decided to treat myself to a Mate 9 after HOURS of research. I've always had older, cheaper smart phones and this was a real 'treat yourself' purchase for me. I ordered my new phone on Gmarket and it arrived, from China, a week later (last Friday). Since then I've been knocking my head against the wall. It's not the international version I've bought myself, but the Chinese version. I can't get google play, gmail and all the other great stuff that really makes an android phone properly useable. I am gutted.
I understand that all is not lost- I can wait two weeks and request a code from Huawei to unlock the bootloader, and from there root the phone and get it onto international firmware... right?
My problem is, after a weekend of looking into this obsessively I feel like I'm in WAAAY over my head. There are so many options for different firmwares, different ways to do it and, well, I'm massively confused.
I'm hoping some kind soul will make me feel less utterly stupid than I feel right now! I'm not wanting to do anything fancy, just change the ROM to make the phone function as if I'd bought it back home in Scotland. Is there an idiots guide to this? I am brand new to this kind of thing and terrified of making a useless lump out of my new phone.
One of the biggest issues with living abroad, I'm over 5000 kilometers from the people I'd usually go and beg for help when I've been a tech dunce.
Specs of the phone;
4 gig ram, 32 gig storage
Running android 7.0
EMUI version 5.0
Build number MHA-AL00C00B213
Thank you all in advance!
-Michael
If that's your only issue you should just get GMS you'll get Google apps.
If your looking to change your Rom and take a dive in this world. Read read read read.
If your just interested in getting it done fast. I would recommend funky Huawei (Google it)
You still need to root. If you don't want to wait for the bootlocker unlock code just get DC-Unlocker.
These are paid services. But they make life easier. If you want a easy step by step guide ask I'll try to make it.

Thank you for your reply! I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, I managed to get the GMS core working and got so excited I forgot! Unfortunately the reason I've remembered is because I'm back on the forum looking for help again. Just about to post a new thread!

Is it possible to port a ROM

Hello there and welcome to my very first post in this Forum.
First of all I would like to thank so many Devs and Hackers here to do so much work and spending time in the ROMs or the hacks for some stuff.
Without the help of this forum I wouldn't have rootet and changed firmware on so many different devices.
Up to now I did not have a reason to register or post in here but now I have been put on a task by my father
Yes as it is always you have an IT guy in family he/she is responsible for anything from programming TV to hacking mothers Tablet XD
enough blah blah here's the task:
My father bought himself a Tablet and as it always is he did not ask me he just bought the cheapest one available a
"Hannspree HannSpad HSG1297"
In the first months it was ok than he found some things are not working without beeing able to store and run apps from the SDCard because that device
has as always with this devices a extremely tiny internal storage.
Despite my suggestions he made the next mistake he bought another Tablet.
Again a cheap one but now with the newer Android 7 the only thing he listened to me... *sadface*
This time it was an "Odys Xelio HD 10 LTE"
And here is the connection we both investigated these both devices and finally come to the conclusion they are both the same Tablet Barebone I would say just different
producers name and modell name.
The Hanns is only available with Android 4.4.x
The Odys is available with Android 7
The question is if our conclusion is right would it be possible to put the Android 7 from Odys to the HannsPad?
What would be required to do this?
I would appreciate any suggestions or tipps.
Sorry for Bumping this up but at least yes or no would be enough for me
