OTG and Charge with Verizon Siii - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Anyone know if there is a kernal, ICS or JB, that allows USB OTG access to a thumb drive and charging of the Verizon S3 at the same time?
My S3 is still running Beans ICS revision 15, and Samba share works great to feed movies from the USB to my kids nooks in the car, but would like to charge at the same time.
TIA

You have a link to the OTG cable you would use to pull that off?
Or would you get juice from a powered hub, maybe the device you are talking to?
My OTG cable only has a plug to go in the phone, and a plug for a USB device - that's it. No place to plug a cable in to add power to the equation, like the MHL cable has.
(both cables samsung OEM)
Are there aftermarket OTG cables with power input?
I really don't know how comfortable I would be using OTG with anything other then a samsung OEM cable. Have you seen this thread?

[Q] HP Touchpad OTG support?

So simple question, does anyone know (have tasted) if Touchpad supports OTG like for example Galaxy S2?
I bought these from DX: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774 and is working great with my Galaxy S2, but can it be used for Touchpad?
First, it is TESTED.
Second, Nope no native support yet, might have to wait till android port is complete, might take a couple of months.
[Q] USB OTG?
That's pretty cool, keep up the work.
Does anyone have ubuntu chrooted to check if the usb module is reporting anything?
kinda pre emptively ordered one in hope.

Apparemtly there is built-in OTG USB support using a powered hub or Y cable, and an OTG mini-male to regular female USB adapter, according to rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?4332-Functional-USB-Host-on-Touchpad

One of those newbs who can't post links eh? I'll fix that...

The Touchpad doesn't have a powered port is the only problem - so provide power to whatever device and you're good to go.
what about a external HDD with its own powe supply, will it work..
unfortunately, i'm still waiting for my TP so cant test
Does it work with your HD2?
If so, there is no reason not to work with TP
(Hint: HD2 has same kind of usb host capabilities that needs external power supply)
So was it ever established whether or not USB OTG works on the Touchpad? Sorry to necro-post, but I picked up a touchpad during the firesale, have been loving it with first WebOS then CM9, and since I ordered a USB OTG adapter for my GSIII (this friday!) I was curious if there was anything I needed to know about using OTG with the HPTP.
It just works with a powered adapter. Nothing more to it then that. I've plugged almost everything into mine!

Thanks for the links, will see if I can get the needed cables etc from eBay/Amazon
Thanks for the help. My OTG cable and other things from Monoprice should've come yesterday, so hopefully I'll have them tomorrow. By powered adapter, do you mean something like a powered USB hub? Although I didn't get that OTG cable for the touchpad, it'd be a nice treat to be able to use it with that, it would definitely make moving movies around a lot easier.
EDIT (10/19): Dangit, they didn't come today. I'll have to see what's up, because they've been in my area for a while according to tracking just not coming.
Yes, u will have to use either a powered USB hub or get power from a USB charger that doesn't have the data +/- pins shorted internally (purchased or modified). If u plug device (ie phone) into charger and it says "ac charging" that means the data pins are shorted.

Alright, thanks. I think I need to get a powered hub for my laptop (which I am currently using as a desktop with external monitor and keyboard) so I there may be a happy coincidence here.
Also, just checked on my touchpad, and the HP charger says charging (AC) as well as my phone charger, which I think started life destined for some Blackberry.
The powered hub should work though, and that would make a great machine for typing and working in bed as opposed to my laptop burning my thighs off.

I just verified that if you get the Micro USB Host OTG Cable With USB power ($6 from AppleCable on Ebay) that Ramjet73 mentioned (or this one), it will work with any standard USB charger (ie the 1 Amp HTC or 2 Amp HP Touchpad Charger) because the USB Power Connector is Isolated. I also picked up Applecable's USB 2.0 3 Port Hub with data Sync Charger cable for $7 (I may try to modify it to be a USB OTG powered hub with this).
I will be updating the OTG thread I mentioned earlier. See attached:
I've never successfully used OTG. I've bought 2 cables.

I've received a bad one before. Cut it open to verify the id pin hadn't been tied to ground like it was supposed to be. I can verify that OTG is enabled with the CM9 Nightly and jcsullin's latest Cm10.

SGS3, USB to go, and charging

I just recently purchased a USB to Go dongle for the SGS3 (the adapter allowing you to use the SGS3 in usb host mode, to connect things like flash drives, mice, hubs, etc). Everything seems to be working quite well, but I do have a question maybe someone can answer.
I was hoping that, if using something like a powered USB hub, that I'd be able to plug that into the USB to Go connector, and that my SGS3 would charge through the hub. Maybe this was a foolish hope, but I'd hoped nonetheless because it seems that there's going to be quite a bit of battery power drained by trying to power devices like this. I had hoped to basically set up a sort of docking station where I could connect the phone to the USB to Go adapter, plug that into a powered hub to have it charge, connect a flash drive, mouse, and keyboard to the hub, and then use HDMI out to a TV.
It seems even with a powered USB hub I'm stuck not charging so this setup obviously doesn't last long, which leads me to wonder why it's set up like this.
I'm sure I'm missing something or not thinking it through or maybe it's just not possible. But any insight into this, or is it just not possible to charge while using the phone as a host?

[Q] USB Hub and Charging

I want to connect my Galaxy S3 to a USB hub but also charge it at the same time. That way I could connect my keyboard, mouse, thumbdrive and PS3 controller while still charging my phone. Is this possible?
I was thinking through a Y-cable I could charge it while the other side connected to the USB hub.
Does anyone know if this will work natively?
Do I have to do anything to my GS3 to enable this functionality?

The S3 automatically charges when plugged in via usb, albiet it's a trickle charge and therefore MUCH slower than if it were plugged into a wall charger.

[Q] USB OTG Cable with additional power

Hello, we all know that there are USB OTG Cables with extra power plug (Y cable) but those are supposed to power external device like HDD, DVD, or anything what consumes more power than our android device can handle.
But my question is: is there any USB OTG cable with additional power plug but for simultaneous tablet / phone charging while USB stick is used?
I want to watch something long (i.e. TV Show series) from USB stick via OTG cable but I cannot simultaneously charge my tablet, so if it take too long my tablet will be out of power before I stop watching.

That means I have to add a resistor only to usb connector or just need a different kernel, or both?
On the native firmware say that this support function is disabled. Personally, I use this CivZ-FLEX-ЛУЧ-REV3.6.2 + SphereXtreme, where works flawlessly with OTG + charging resistor 64.9 K.
I call BS!!!!
I have a stock firmware, and have been using all kinds of USB cables. Found the best are made from Sony/Ericson and Blackberry. Once you have a quality cable your charging issues will go away.
Right now I am using a 7 foot cable that is from a Sony. No charging issues and works perfectly.
Lately I found another MHL cable 2hich is called HDMI to Micro HDMI, and that micro HDMI plug looks exactly like micro USB. Will such cable work with Note 8 properly without additional power?
The version of MHL our device supports requires a power source external to the tablet. That means the adapter itself needs to provide the power (battery or power adapter) or can pull enough off the HDMI cable, which is usually not enough juice to run the connection.
MicroHDMI and MicroUSB are also not physically compatible (won't fit the same port and different pin outs) even if they look so much a like. MHL typically uses MicroUSB at one end and full sized HDMI at the other.

This is correct u need to put a 63-65 k resistor between ground and Id pin(pin 4 &5) on USB connector. Doesn't work on civatos 4.4.2 as of now. USB host works fine with regular USB host cable but no charging when u use a y cable. I use civatos 4.2.2 kernel also. Works on yyks note 2 4.3 port also..
I have test multiple times. I use a USB dac in car and need charging and USB host.
what resistor should i use on my sghi257m samsung galaxy s4 mini otg usb cable?
on my dads galaxy s5 Active it shows message that says: Do you wanna enable power sharing
is that OTG? on my S4mini nothing pops up
I know this thread is really old but i want to use a USB DAC so need at cable with a resistor as mentioned above but What ROM should I use now?? also is there anywhere I can buy a cable with resistor in it or do i have to do it myself?

MHL + Power Adapter not Charging Device

So I recently got a MHL/OTG adapter off of ebay. The HDMI out and usb ports seem to work no problem. My problem is that when connecting my charging cable to the MHL hub my device isn't getting any power. I have no indications of my battery % going up. That means if I were to stream a movie onto my TV it would work fine but I would run out of battery fast. Does this seem like there's something wrong with the MHL adapter? Is my samsung battery charger not strong enough? Any help with this is greatly appreciated. I have done a bit of research on this and found mixed answers.
Actually... That's normal... An otg adapter puts your device into "power output" mode so it can power a flashdrive or other storage device... So the input/charging mode gets turned off.
Plugging your charger into the hub helps power the external devices so they don't kill your battery so quickly...
No. MHL 3 is meant to charge in parallel. Works on mine. It charges at 700mA only though, pretty slow. You can check the current by Synapse App + Skyhigh Kernel. I think you can configure higher charging rates as well(didn't try). MHL 3 is speced for 2A current.
Yeah... MHL works that way... But the OP says it's also an "OTG hub off ebay" .... So were not just talking about a straight MHL adapter... If it's an OTG hub triggering OTG mode on the tablet... Then it won't charge and it's not suppposed to.

Hi, I also have a MHL/OTG adapter like yours (MHL/OTG/Card Reader) MHL-HDMI works flawless but OTG doesn't.
A USB pendrive that works flawless with an OTG cable it doesn't recognized in the hub while MHL>HDMI it's working.
@xmilar can you please post the link to the MHL/OTG adapter you bought and while yours not charge, are MHL+OTG working simultaniusly?
Thanks!
I've looked into MHL adapters for my Tab S 10.5 and LG G3 but it would require multiple cables and if I replace either or both items and the new item uses a different MHL, I would have to spend more money. I ended up just buying a Chromecast that does the same thing and wirelessly. Best $30 I spent
Hello, I ve bought an MHL adapter, the one with usb connector to charge the tablet when using the mhl, anyway nothing is working. The tablet doesnt charge, and shows 2 times the following : HDMI Connected, then after one second HDMI disconnected, two times. On my Sony phone works with no problems. I have skyhigh kernel and stock rom.
Probably it's not MHL 3?
Sorry for the late reply, if is not MHL 3 why is it working on my Sony Z1 compact with 4.4.4 rooted also.
If the adapter works on a Sony device then its probably based on a standard micro USB connector. According to the wikipedia entry for MHL newer samsung devices use a propriety 11 pin micro USB connector for MHL. There is mention of a "tip" to adapt between 11 pin and 5 pin, perhaps you could buy one of these?
