I want to connect my Galaxy S3 to a USB hub but also charge it at the same time. That way I could connect my keyboard, mouse, thumbdrive and PS3 controller while still charging my phone. Is this possible?
I was thinking through a Y-cable I could charge it while the other side connected to the USB hub.
Does anyone know if this will work natively?
Do I have to do anything to my GS3 to enable this functionality?

The S3 automatically charges when plugged in via usb, albiet it's a trickle charge and therefore MUCH slower than if it were plugged into a wall charger.

Canyou charge the galaxy s3 wirelessly and use otg at the same time? Do you think this would be possible on the nexus 4?
Has anyone tried this?

I would also like to know if this is possible! (on any device)
Galaxy SIII OTG + chariging = NO
I've tried this recently because I needed to know myself.
It is NOT possible to do USB OTG and wireless charging at the same time. Wireless charging simply disables the USB port. And when something is connected to the USB port wireless charging is ignored. Even when only a OTG cable is connected (no mouse or USB stick) wireless charging is not possible.
Sad but true
Edit:
The same applies for the Galaxy Nexus phone with it's pogo-pins for charging. One excludes the other.
The only device that I've found and tested to be capable of USB OTG and charging at the same time is the Nexus 7. (charging trough dock, pogo-pins).
Another way to accomplish USB OTG + charging is to use a edited kernel.. About to try this on de Galaxy Nexus.
Hi I can't find a definitive answer but I think it is no. Anyway does anyone know if it possible to do the following?
Get TV out (HDMI) + usb host working at same time
Get usb host (hub or not) + charging the tablet
Get hdmi out + usb host + charging.
I think our tab works with the media dock for the 7" tab but can usb host be added as well? The dock for the note 2 looks amazing and should really be available for all devices like this.
Cheers

I don't know the technical terms behind this but here's the gist of why this won't work: When you are using the HDMI out or the USB OTG it puts the multi purpose connector into a proprietary mode which will I/O a protocol that works with that particular type of device. So when it is in HDMI mode it is using certain data pins to connect with the HDMI pins, and when it is in USB OTG mode it is using some of the same pins to connect to USB data pins.
It can only be in one mode or the other at once, so if you hooked up a hub to a usb OTG connector, or used a USB OTG hub, the jack on the note is going to be in USB OTG mode/protocol, and it will not recognize an HDMI adapter also connected to the hub as an HDMI device that it supports. Only storage devices, HID input devices, and samsung printers are supported on the USB OTG.
Since this is a hardware restriction, I'm 99% sure it cannot be programmed around. I think the same applies to why you cannot charge while using the USB OTG. As far as I know all the HDMI adapters require a usb power source and will somewhat charge the tablet.

Thanks for the info just what I was after, it all sounds like a bummer but not too bad. Sounds like I will need root to connect a ps3 controller then.

No need to root for ps3 controller use. My sixaxis works fine using the standard usb adapter. You'll only need to root if you want bluetooth connectivity.
Anyone know if there is a kernal, ICS or JB, that allows USB OTG access to a thumb drive and charging of the Verizon S3 at the same time?
My S3 is still running Beans ICS revision 15, and Samba share works great to feed movies from the USB to my kids nooks in the car, but would like to charge at the same time.
TIA
You have a link to the OTG cable you would use to pull that off?
Or would you get juice from a powered hub, maybe the device you are talking to?
My OTG cable only has a plug to go in the phone, and a plug for a USB device - that's it. No place to plug a cable in to add power to the equation, like the MHL cable has.
(both cables samsung OEM)
Are there aftermarket OTG cables with power input?
I really don't know how comfortable I would be using OTG with anything other then a samsung OEM cable. Have you seen this thread?
Hello,
I have the TF300T (without the keyboard dock), and I want to get a USB port dongle. However I have two needs:
I want the USB port to provide enough power for a USB 2.5" hard disk. I suppose I can use a powered USB hub for this?
I would really like to be able charge the tablet when the USB dongle is on. Is this possible?
Thank you

If that USB HDD requires 2 USB (one data one power), then a powered hub is your best bet.
When the USB dongle is in, it takes the place of the charging port. You can either charge the tablet or use the dongle.
I do not need DeX mode, but I would like to charge the device and simultaneously connect the periphery. Using the smartphone screen. Is this possible?
In a short answer... Yes. With Sidesync. You can charge your phone and and then use it on a computer screen or tablet like a emulator.

Connect the periphery and use smartphone screen, non computer. Usb-c hub to plug hard drive, mouse etc and charge simultaneously. Like macbook

You can plug in to the USB-C with a USB-C to USB adapter and use a dongle that works with your mouse/keyboard. But, unless its on a wireless charger, then I do not recommend using a USB hub to charge.
