Auto Brightness - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a TF300 (JB preinstalled). And the auto brightness doesnt seem to be work turning it on reduces the brightness to the minimum regardless of the ambient lighting.
Is this a software bug with JB on TF300. or a faulty hardware that i should return ?

To be honest, mine never seemed to work correctly and don't even use it. May not be a flaw with yours

heat

has any one ever had any overheating issues with this tablet, mine only gets a tiny bit warm where the charger connects to the keyboard dock and the hottest ive seen the tablet is 31 degrees and i was hammering it just to see how hot i could get it, i just wanted other peoples opinion on it as think asus did great with this one

Same here, about 30 degrees during gaming apart from that, only the wall charger gets hot ^^ I'm pretty impressed with how cool this thing runs.
So far the mid 30s but the A510 had no problem busting 50c.
my galaxy s2 gets real hot all the time but this just stays cool, are all transformers like this??

My Acer A200 gets warmer than my tf300 not by much tho. I think Asus did a good job on it.
My tf 300 dont get hot at all...
My tf101 only gets a little warm around the Cpu when I overclock to 1.7 for teh lulz. Normal use cool as can be
The wall charger burns my hand though, but that's normal for the TF101 and isn't a problem.
For once we can say.. GJ asus!
Looks like one person is saying their 300 gets hot and seems to be a defect. Searching du' web, no review or other poster appears to state this. In fact, it is common the opposite is stated on how cool it runs.
I can appreciate though if a person does have a defect and assumes that is normal for all. For the Acer 510 and 700, it is very true
i still cant get higher than 31 lol

What's up with auto-brightness on Android devices?

I don't think it's been usable (auto-brightness) on any Android device I've owned. Typically, in a home setting, it simply sets the brightness to the lowest setting, which is way too dim. Why can't they implement a "customizable" auto-brightness so that it's actually usable???
Does anyone else have any better luck with Auto-brightness on Android devices??
Actually, I *do* have one Android device where it works properly - my HTC EVO V 4G.
Yes, I know there are apps in the Market but they always seems overly-complicated. I just want a simple brightness slider that can adjust the auto-brightness, like on iOS devices (was trying to avoid mentioning that, but it's the best way to describe what I'm looking for).
Anyone know of a way to customize the auto-brightness level without a 3rd party app?
Thanks for listening while I vent!

In the case of the TF700 I found that switching on the Super IPS+ while in auto brightness mode makes it usable. I totally agree with your point, adjustable would be nice. The TF700 is the worst I've seen. Even in fairly brightly lit rooms mine turns the brightness all the way down.
The only device I have been able to leave autobrightness on is with the Galaxy Nexus. However, I am noticing constant adjustments in brightness on the Infinity, even with autobrightness turned off. Are you guys experiencing the same thing?

Yeah, it's actually just the dynamic contrast adjusting the backlight levels depending on how much white is on the screen, etc... No way to avoid that yet...

Just install Lux!

I have purchased Lux and it does work, but I just wish it were as simple as a single slider to adjust the auto-brightness - Lux is overly complicated (in my opinion).... I've actually found it easier to just adjust the brightness manually when needed instead of trying to get Lux to do what I want it to do...

It's just one button and you don't even have to press it?
Seriously it is even more complicated to buy the app than to use it.
Puzzled...

You must have better luck than I - I found myself having to constantly add new "levels" to make the brightness adjust properly for the current lighting - it was never as automatic as I had assumed it would be.... THen i had issues where certain apps wouldn't install anymore and had to enable a special option to let me install apps again, etc - again, just not as simple as I had hoped...
Maybe I'll give it another shot... Maybe it's better than it used to be...

Maybe your sensor is faulty?
Sometimes I have a glitch too but it is as randomly as the I/O so I thought/think it is related.

Man, my sensor must be on steroids. I'm going thru theze new threads and am wondering if I've got the same pad.. I went into my settings and changed to"auto" but still get good resolution contrast and readability. Sure, there is a small diff between the bedroom and the hammock, where I am right now wondering if I over did the 32 gig sdxd cards since i don't game. But really now, this is heaven and we want more???
Really nice day in S Jersey btw

My auto-brightness works great in bright envs. But at home in normal lighting, it sets the brightness all the way down (my TF101 did the same thing so I highly doubt it's a bad light sensor). It's un-usable. Of course, I want more - let me adjust it!

Lux and I bet there are other apps for this, has a debug mode that outputs what the sensor-api returns.
So get there or get such an app and try if the sensor readings are somewhat reasonable.
That method showed me my sensor has also a little problems with darker surroundings.
Sometimes it will get stuck at a low leven like 4 lux and not go down all the way to zero.
I know this is an old thread, but in case someone still wants to see this implemented (as I do) please star this request https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=56581 :good:

Screen brigthness reduced on dark backgrounds

Hi guys,
So I just got my forth Infinity Everything seems to be OK this time so I can finally play with it There is one thing I didn't notice in the last three tabs, but it is because I have never used it in dark conditions so far. Anyway I just noticed that if my brigthness is set to 10-30% (no auto mode) and if I run some application with dark background (like Gallery, YouTube or some screens of Google Play) it is visible (but you need to pay attention) that screen gets dimmed a little and if I return to homescreen it is noticable that screen get's brighter after some time. I think it won''t be visible, but there is some little lag of adjusting the brightness. If I reduce the brightness maximally to the left it is not visible, also if I move it to >80% it is also not visible. If I run app with white background (like GMail or Internet) there is no such issue. Is it normal ? It is not big issue, but I'm praying I don't have to send it for replacement once again I checked it both on normal and balanced mode while running on battery. I have to check if there is difference if I'm plugged into AC power, but I don't have such issue on my HTC Sensation.
Sounds like the same issue I'm experiencing.

Hi CeeJayII,
Yes, your issue seems to be related, but is not the same. You wrote:

... for instance if browsing at 100% in only seems to drop to 85% when watching video. Is this normal? I've noticed the most difference when the brightness is set at 0%. I'll watch netflix then press the home button, the screen stays at video brightness (darker) for a second then restores back to the original setting.

In my case I can't tell how much it has dropped, because looking at the brigthness level in statusbar it seems to be the same, but it is still visible that the brightness has been reduced/increased. In my case it is definitely not reduced/increased by 15%, I would say it is something like 2-5%. Besides that in my case everything is OK if my brightess level is 0% or more than 80%. But in your case it seems to be similar, because you are watching netflix (dark background) and when you go to homescreen the brightness is restored. Maybe it is some power-saving method to prolonge our battery lifes ? Anyone else can confirm the issue ?
Well I may have overstated, when brightness is at zero there is quite a drop. The higher the brightness, the less noticeable it is. It doesn't change on the brightness slider for me either, just seems to dim a little. I think it is the same issue. I'm guessing it is normal.
OK, so it seems to be the same issue. Let's wait for other user to reply if they observe the same thing.
This sounds like the SmartDimmer (which is different than auto-brightness - it's kinda like dynamic contrast). You can disable it if you are rooted.

Hi jtrosky, it is definitely this issue ! Thanks for putting it here ! I will root my Infinity in few minutes just to get rid of it
Do some SEARCHING BEFORE POSTING.

Believe me - I did thorough search on xda and transformerforums and didn't find this thread. Sometimes it is not that easy to find what you are looking for
Ok, you have jtrosky to thank then. Google search with "xda" added to the query normally works better than the internal one here.
BTW, greetings from Warsaw, misiek.

What's really strange is that I just picked up a Nexus 7 and the "SmartDimmer" is barely even noticeable on the Nexus 7, which is where that tweak originally came from (over in the Nexus 7 forums)!?
The issue is *way* more noticeable on the TF700 (I probably would have never even noticed the issue on the Nexus 7) - almost like there is some sort of bug in the TF700 firmware as it relates to the SmartDimmer. It drove me *crazy* on the TF700...
Anyway, it's well worth rooting to get rid of the constant flickering!
EDIT: By the way, the search function in the Tapatalk app is next to useless... Unless someone knows something that I don't - for example, is it even possible to limit the search to a particular forum/subforum in tapatalk?

That's strange, as they're both IPS and manufactured by ASUS (the Infinity with some added brightness if used), it'd be nice to compare the config files you mentioned in your posts on both devices, along with smartdimmer settings in the plaintext files.
Just a thought, but as there are more pixels on the Infinity - is it actually faster on the N7?

Air Control HD

Works great on my Nexus 7 but on the TF700T I can't consistently draw trajectories to the landing. Tried all kinds of setting, in and out of the game, but no luck. Anyone successfully using this?
Just gave it a quick spin and it seems to work fine here. I only tried it for 2-3 minutes though, since I'm horribly bad at it

Works fine for me too.
Are you on JB?
Yep, I'm on JB. Arre you using the HD (paid) version? If I draw a long trajectory line, the line stops after a short distance. I've tried turning off h/w acceleration within the game and different tablet settings. Also reinstalled the game, to no avail.
Air Control HD works fine here.

Had a thought and downloaded Sketchbook Mobile and found that when I draw in it I see the same issue as in Air Control - as I draw my finger across the screen in Sketchbook, a line will be drawn for a short distance and then will stop. So the screen is losing my touch/drag detection.
I tested it with Air Control HD, yeah. Bought it during the 25c sales earlier, haven't had a chance to test it properly until now. Works fine, though. I also tried drawing some long lines in Sketchbook Pro (yet another 25c purchase ) and it works fine as well.
It seems that your touch panel might be defective. You could try a re-flash of JB manually, but I don't know if the touch panel firmware will be reinstalled as well then. I doubt it, but it's worth a try.
Edit: If you're not on JB yet, you might want to try updating that. There have been some touch panel firmware updates since the release of the tablet, maybe that'll help.

Odd thing is that something like dragging an icon from one end of the screen to another works just fine and I don't see any other anomalies other than this line draw issue.

And another - I can readily draw lines in the Notemaster app so it would seem that this is not a h/w problem. I have cold booted several times, too.
This is a h/w problem. Here is my RMA request to Asus:
Center of screen is dead and unresponsive to touch.
I can go into Developer Options and enable Debugging Mode. If I enable Pointer Location and then draw my finger back and forth across the screen in landscape mode I can see an area about half an inch wide in the middle of the screen where the drawn line is broken. This dead area extends from the top of the screen to the bottom. If I enable Show Touches, I can see the visual feedback jump over this dead area, not glide through it. I have done a factory reset but no change occurred.
Ah, too bad :\ Good luck with the RMA, though!

[Q] anyone notice their screen is getting dimmer?

have had my Transformer Infinity since September (or October?) of last year. besides the usual I/O problems (which i am putting up with until i can't, and then buying the Nexus 10 or whatever will be the new hotness at the time) despite running CleanROM and Browser2Ram, i've noticed that the screen seems to be losing brightness.
anyone else?
never had to use the IPS mode up until the last few weeks, but now i'm using it a lot more to watch videos and to browse.
possible the screen really IS losing brightness? or maybe, you know, i have early onset macular degeneration?

Maybe it's just your environment that got brighter. Winter is over...
You don't happen to have set auto brightness to on?
It's most likely the environmentgetting brighter, i've noticed the same thing on my sgs3.
