Light bleed? - Asus Transformer TF700

Is this something to just be expected with these tablets or should I go through the headache of returning it? Took me almost 2 weeks to receive it so I'd hate to return it if I'm being over critical...

Looks about like mine, and for me it goes away after the boot is complete and the brightness is reset to a "normal" level.

Yea mine seems to go away after the boot as well, until I watch a movie or something that has the typical black bars on the top and bottom, then it's noticeable again...

same here
i also have a spot of light bleed on the upper right hand side that's fairly annoying.
i heard this can be cured by loosening one of the screws inside that holds the lcd to the glass.
it seems that the light is caused by pressure. i would love to hear from someone who has successfully opened the tf700 without breaking it LOL
im a DIY kind of guy but $500 + GLASS =

Just got mine yesterday. I noticed something like that on boot, but haven't had the time to grab my magnifying glass. This may be a quirk of the tablet. My razr has ugly black blobs when the brightness is way low and I'm in the dark. A bit annoying, but I'm over it.

That's fairly normal. It's not intentional, but light bleed happens on pretty much every device from any brand that uses LCD or LED screens. Not all infinities have it (Europe seems to have a higher quality standard than the US) but it is quite common worldwide.

Mine has some too. I went through like 5 returns for various reasons. From the July to October. They all had various degrees of light bleed.

So my coworker who is a big apple fanboy, looks at my tablet and the first thing he says is " what's wrong with your screen?"
I didn't even bring it up to him. He noticed it on his own. Great...

Minor light bleed is normal on most LCD screens. You can put your TF700 and any Apple device side by side in bright ambient light, then enable IPS+ and maximum brightness on your TF700, and ask the Apple fanboy what's wrong with *their* screen.
(The TF700's display is one of the brightest out there - see http://www.anandtech.com/show/6036/asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700t-review/2)

Mine has even worse bleeding, do you guys believe I can ask a RMA after 4 months?
Would it make sense or they would send me back my tablet in the same or even worse condition?
Thanks

I wouldn't take much that any Apple "Fanboy" has to say about any Android product. They are, after all, called Fanboys for a reason. A bit of light bleed is normal and it happens even to iPad's. My wife and son both have one, one of the two has a light bleed very similar, so it's not just Androids or the Infinity.

Light bleed during booting up is perfectly normal, light bleed while you're watching movie/video is not normal. You can throw a custom bootanimation on yours so that during boot up you won't see the it.

[Q] What was your face like when your tablet was fine?

So, what was your face like when you realised your transformer had no issues?
After having had the luck of a perfectly functional and non-flawed first batch transformer, Was dreading the worst when I finally got my own dock and could put aside the dock I borrowed from my friend.
I couldn't quite believe my luck when my dock worked and is still working fine after 24 hours, even with trackpad.
My face was sort of like this

So what was your face like when your transformer was in full working order?
EDIT: This of course could also mean I wasn't actually lucky and that the majority of users have a well working product (which you wouldn't think after reading these forums on a daily basis).
Maybe I'm crazy but I expected I'd receive a well built, fully functional product. That expectation was based on years of system building using Asus products & the understanding that forums like these receive more posts from people seeking support for problems than posts from thrilled, happy, users
but to answer your question.. when I realized my tablet and dock were good,I did this link is work safe

It took about a week for my Transformer to have its first Sleep of Death, and about the same amount of time for the case to start creaking. Will you post your face when either of those happens?
Good to hear! No issues at all? I hope it's the same with me.
I got my dock in today, but still haven't been able to order my TF. Hopefully this delay is a blessing in disguise.

Had my tab for 3 weeks. No sleep of death. Also it's plastic, of course it's gonna creak, anyone who's actually bothered by it shouldn't buy plastic in the first place.
It's funny to me that everyone is so happy to get a working product. I've never been an early adopter of anything without experiencing a few minor issues. The TF is no exception, but Asus seems quick to respond to concerns, so hopefully these "no issues" threads will no longer be necessary.
mine arrived with the latest firmware
so is that the new batch?
Mine did too....I hit the "update" button and it said that my software is up to date..

Most of my Evo is plastic, wanna guess what it doesn't do? I don't mind the creak, only happens when I squeeze the right back side of it, but the flex and creak are there, only on that side, and it reeks of cheap construction. It's a $400 IPS tablet though, can't expect it to be 100% solid I guess.

The only piece of tech I have that has a plastic body and doesn't creak is my G9x, and I have quite a few pieces of flagship tech, including from HTC. it always creaks somewhere.

I have been reading on this forum of people getting a replaced TF101 with dust and even worse light bleed. Now, if anyone with good judgement about this issue that would be great. The light bleed has gotten steadily worse over the course of a few weeks.
My question here: Is it worth sending back? Or am I simply overreacting?
I'm sorry, once again.

Seriously? Are you 5? It's not like anyone can talk you out of it. There are like so many threads out there with the same bs. What do you want to listen? Tell me and i ll feed you the answer you want. You are an adult and you are capable of making your own decision. All the facts are out there and just read and make up your mind.
Btw, the lightbleed thing is silly. How often do you use your screen completely black with max backlight? You should check how much it annoys you when you use it casually like wathing movies.

I thought that some light bleed is to be expected because of the IPS screen?
I have a little too and small speck of dust under the screen. Personally, I would rather not gamble that I get back a "better" version since the light bleed is somewhat unavoidable. As far as the dust goes, I try not to think about it or look for it, and it seems to be fine, but it is just one speck.
I had a hard drive crash on my iMac, so I took it in under warranty. They must have had hairy gorillas working on it because it came back with several dead pixels on the built in screen. I sent them a complaint, but I'd be a fool to send it back to the zoo. I wish they just gave me the bare drive and I could have replaced it myself- faster, better, slicker.
Maybe it's kinda like an old car with strange noises coming out of the engine- just turn up the speakers until you can't hear the knocking... ooops bad analogy.
I've never seen/had a device were people didn't complain about something as stupid as "light bleed" but for some reason when it comes to the TF, it's starting to get out of hand... Either Asus knows how to attract the most misinformed/least technologically informed customers OR they are hiring thousands of agents to invade household all over the world forcing people who don't want the TF to buy it, thus leaving them no option but to seek some imaginable help from the internet.
If somebody is holding a gun to your head at this very moment and claims to be a ASUS rep just *wink* and i'll come to your rescue.
Light bleed is just a side effect of the technology. If you don't like it don't RMA it it. RMA is for defective merchandise, which this is not. These forums are like some scary groupthink center where everyone conspires to have the same stupid thought and then repeat it over and over ad nauseum.
All of these repeated RMAs for a non-defect are one of the reasons why companies are forced to use bargain binned parts to maintain a reasonable overhead. It's a vicious cycle.
Here is what you do:
Return it and get your money back and buy a different product. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is nice. The Apple iPad is a good product with high spec components. Buy what you like and don't complain about non-defects.
Or...
Keep it and deal with it. Does this light bleed prevent it from completing ANY of the tasks for which it is capable? No. Of course it's annoying, but is NOT a defect.
sassafras
I say put a post it note on your Transformer when you send it in that says, "Please send my device back with no backlight bleed and no dust under the screen, k thanks." That should do the trick...
I wasn't happy with the light bleed on my TF and I got a refund, it got progressively worse over several days, I did attempt to get a replacement unit but it had even worse light bleed.
If you feel unhappy with it, change it or ask for a refund if that's possible.

Bizzare screen defect - help!

So check this out. I got a replacement phone from verizon about 2 weeks ago. After the first few days i noticed a slight discoloration in the top left side of the screen. You could only see if on a white screen, other than that it was pretty inconspicuous. However I was dissatisfied that my new replacement had this defect so I called and they promptly sent a new one with standard 5 day shipping!
So, as the week went on this weird spot that I can only compare to a grease stain on a piece of clothing, started to grow... every day it was a little bigger. It grew at a rate that was barley noticeable. I had to see what icon it was touching, and then compare that to its position the next day.
by last night (about a week later) it had grown to affect half of the screen. i assumed that it would eventually take over the enter screen and I would be left with a slightly shaded screen coloring.
when i woke up this morning, this is what it looked like

Its pretty much totally unusable. you can see from the picture that somehow the puzzle piece pattern burned into the screen (not sure how as that screen is never on for more than a few seconds, especially since it wasn't burned in last night and my phone sits on my nightstand and was not on).
Its like the screen 'ink' or whatever just totally failed.
anyway, i have the replacement already, but I wanted to share this weird story
the replacement phone is already listed on ebay and I will be upgrading to the HTC Rezound as soon as it comes out.
Definitely a faulty panel there.
Very strange to see it go that way, though. Pretty interesting picture.
BTW: These screens are not LCD, there's nothing like "Screen ink" in them. Each pixel is an array of 3 tiny LED lights (one Red, one Green, one Blue).

thats what I thought too. So what is causing it to "bleed" like that? by the way.. its only been a about 2 hours since i took that picture, and its almost entirely "blue". my guess is that in a few hours it will be completely failed
Probably just a bad run on the screen.
I'd be interested to see if there are more of them out there, since the panels are manufactured in large batches, so one defect should have several similar screens like it out there.
Could also be a fault somewhere else in the device, like maybe the display controller, and it's maybe overvolting the red and green LEDs, causing them to burn out much faster. (pure conjecture on my part)
I did just install ep3Ha on that the day I got it. wonder if its possible something went bad in the flash and toasted the screen, or is that even possible

doubt it, that looks like massive hardware fail
yeah, I don't think there's anything you could do software-wise that would do anything like that.

no, this happened very very slowly. it looks like an LCD screen when you sit on it or step on it.. but no. since its not lcd it cant do that.
it took it about 7 days to get to this point.
I was talking to a colleague of mine who is an EE. He thinks it was a failure in the glue that holds the layers of the panel together. because of how it started, small and in 1 corner, it is similar de-lamination that can can happen in things like plywood. these screens are layered pieces of plastics and material that allows it to work as a screen. once it started to 'peel' apart, it was just a matter of time.
the screen slowly started to come apart until it reached a critical point. the result would be the same if you had the screen out of the phone and started to separate its layers.
seems to make sense to me, hes the EE, im just a physics major.. what do i know
I can hear the screen saying IIIIIMMMM MEEEEELLLLLTTTTTIIIINNNNNGGGGG

This is actually normal. Using a software such as Screen Filter and looking at a pure grey image will show the screen pattern pretty clearly. Very noticeable at lower brightness, not much of an issue otherwise.

nothing in particular. I first noticed while using Launcher 7, all the red tiles had a lot of striping. I'm talking about pure red #FF0000. The gray noise has always seemed minimal. I only noticed it while using MIUI or Gingerbread. I just hope they don't replace my screen with the S-LCD. the SAMOLED is still much better than the S-LCD

Although I cannot confirm this right away, I highly doubt replacing it for a S-LCD is as easy as plugging it in. Phones have to be cost effective, so the less time spent repairing them, the better. I don't think you'll have anything but a SAMOLED.
Well I just got it back.
And they didn't fix the issue
although they did replace my charge port and volume buttons.
So, not a complete loss

White don in the middle of the screen

Hey i have this white dot on the middle of the screen . i mean its white on black backgrounds but not noticable on lighter colours . what could this be ?
I have this problem,I have sent my phone to HTC 5 times now and the problem is still here

Sounds like a stuck pixel. If it was dead it would be black.
There are various apps that are designed to attempt to fix the problem, by flashing the screen to create different levels of pixel activity. But I'm not sure if they will actually do anything.
Sent from my Bruce's CM10 Sensation using XDA Premium
I have a problem like this as well. It's not a stuck pixel, it looks more like a "smear" on the screen whose pixels won't get as dark as they are supposed to. The problem is most apparent on dark gray backgrounds. You know, the kind that's all over Holo. :/
Never tried to contact HTC about it since I figured it was my fault, but if other people here have exactly the same problem then it may be a more widespread problem.

It's still very hard too see it properly. Has it always been there?
It sort of reminds me of the first LCD TVs that were released that suffered from 'clouding' in the corners. Which could be 'massaged' out of the panel. Yet this is directly in the centre area if the panel. Or even reminds me the knuckle marks on my old Dell monitor (long MMORPG story) that look exactly like that. Damaged pixels that won't fill completely anymore.
I find it hard to imagine how this could happen without direct damaged (which is pretty much impossible in this scenario, without a damaged digitizer). Or without it being a manufacturing issue, prior or even during assembly.

Hmmm strange, I have the same problem since about 2 months. I thought it was my fault because I pressed the screen too hard or something. On my phone it's a dot, not a smudge.

Have you opened up the case of the phone at all? If you get something behind the screen it will push the center of it out and create exactly the issue you have.
Even if you haven't opened it up, something could be stuck back there. A big peice of dirt, a small plastic peice that broke up internally, or anything else.
If you have teken the device part, do it again and make sure it's clean behind the screen. If you haven't, send it back for a new one.
