I saw a couple old posts on hotspot speeds being slow, I figured I would restart it since I am running into issues. Would you expect a laptop connected to SGS3 hotspot (the official way - I have free hotspot due to a shared data plan) to run significantly slower than using the phone itself? For example, I used the hotspot feature today, and while I am getting 15-20Mbps on my phone, at the same time a laptop and iPad connected to the hotspot get well below 1Mbps. Both the laptop and iPad a right next to my SGS3. Is this normal?
I ran a ping test and saw that a lot of packets (50% or more) were getting lost from my laptop to wifi connection.
I a running CleanROM 5.5.2, s unsure it is not an issue that would be ROM specific, given the amount of advanced users and developers using that ROM and very little talk in the forum about hotspot issues.

I get crappy speeds via the WiFi hotspot. For example, when I am in a good 4G zone, I get 2-3Mb download speeds on the Evo itself but my laptop or iPad connected via hotspot will get between 200-400Kb downloads. Same problem when I'm in 3G.
*bump*
Any help would be appreciated.
200-400 kilobits or kilobytes.... if its kilobytes, then that is normal download speed as statedfor your 4g connecting.
Kbits.
If I get 2-3M download speeds on the phone, why would another device connected by wifi to that same phone not get at least similar download speeds? If I get 2M on the phone and 1.6 to 1.8M on the iPad or laptop connected to the phone's hotspot, I'm happy. But getting 10% of the download speeds doesn't make sense. The Evo clearly has a great signal. Why would it not be able to pass it along to other devices by wifi since Sprint's Hotspot is designed (and marketed as being able) to do that?
--- Edited, I can't read apparently ---
Have you tried different channels on the wifi tether? Might be interference? Are you running at full 54mbit on the client? Interference would easily drop the speed down to 11 or lower, and absolutely KILL your speeds
Try firing up osmonitor (is cmdline top available?) and see if something is maxing the CPU. Since most of the routing is done with the built-in Linux routing and iptables, I don't think that would cause it, but CPU usage or interference would definitely kill it.
I get 3000kbits/s or 3Mbits/s on the phone and I get 200-400kbits/s via WiFi hotspot on my computer. I am getting about 10% of the bandwidth via the WiFi hotspot than I get on the phone itself or even on the laptop when tethered via USB.
Hello, I'd like any feedback from any folks using the TB as their main or primary internet connection via hotspot and/or usb modem mode.
I'd like to get rid of my dsl connection, and use the TB with the unlimited 4g data.
Concerns I have include latency (for steam/online gaming), streaming stability (netflix etc), upload/download speeds and hitting any soft or hard xfer caps (usenet etc).
Since this would be the main internet connection and I have alot of devices around the house, avoiding/negating simultanious connection caps is also a concern.
Has anyone used the TB in conjunction with a normal home router, like with wrt-54/dd-wrt or a newer device like netgear wndr3700, or any router with usb modem support.
Ideally I'd prefer plug the TB into a router via usb and use it as the main internet, or alternatively have the router connect over wifi to TB, with the router performing NAT and managing ports/upnp/etc for the rest of the network devices.
Do a search for "home isp".
I have never used it as a main connection before but I have used the Wifi on it many times.. Although it is fast, it will not work as fast as a main line, especially when gaming.. Also, the ulimited 4G wireless hotspot will not always be available, unless rooted, I talked with a verizon rep about it yesterday he said although it is free right now, they will take that away later. When connecting multiple devices to the phone the speed will only go down.
Now, depending on your ISP I could be wrong, it may be faster, but if your signal is not stable your internet connection on your PC will not be either.
Just a couple things to consider before you go through with you idea. One thing you might do is try to set it up temporarily and see how it goes, but keep your DSL service up. That way you can get a better idea of what to expect.
Just because you have unlimited data on your phone doesn't mean you will have unlimited on tethering... I believe its $20 for 2GB. And if you think you'll get away with sneaking behind Verizon's back your very mistaken. They can see your doing it and dont expect them to put up with you sucking down their LTE without paying for it for very long.

I agree its not going to happen!!!
This is super off-the-wall but does anyone else use a Macbook via wifi on their home network at the same time as an Android device, and notice super crappy wifi performance of just the Macbook? I am using an AT&T uverse wifi router (via motorola.)
I have tested this with a Fascinate and an Eris, and with an old Macbook 14" and a newer Pro. When wifi on the phone is turned off the macbooks seem to work pretty good (there are still times when they crap out). When the wifi is on, the phones (and my dell laptop) can connect fine, speedtest shows full bandwidth from them, but the macbooks just run super slow, even when the laptop is very close to the router.
Well, my laptop is a macbook and I use our home wifi network for internet, I occasionally use wifi at home on my phone but I'm usually on 3g (pay $30/month for it, might as well use it). But I haven't experienced issues with network performance on the macbook while there are android devices connected to the same network or not. The problem must be somewhere else in your setup?
I don't see how one could effect the other
It could be the layout and materials of the room you are in. With radio (like WiFi) more than just signal strength matters. You can get interference or reflection of the signal that can cause problems. Newer notebooks have 3 antennas to help deal with these problems.
If the notebook is older, it likely has 1 or 2 antennas and might not deal with relection as well. Not sure what you could do to fix it though to be honest
Thanks for the info, I know that it is hard to imagine that one affects the other but I tested it a few times and each time the network speed on the macbook was bad when the phone wifi was on (even when the phone was not being used) and then got a lot better when i switched the phone wifi off. It is probably related to the Motorola wifi router more so than the phone, but I figured I would see if anyone else noticed it. The funny thing is that if i switch the phone over to hotspot mode (using wifi-tether 1.6beta) and connect the macbook to it, it runs great.
Your home network speed will drop to the speed of the slowest device on that network. There are 3 different speeds of wireless network cards in today’s electronic devices – B, G and N. B is the slowest wireless connection and can be found in things like Wii consoles. N is the fastest wireless connection and can be found in things like Ipad2′s and Macbook Air’s.
A computer network in a home is only as fast as the slowest device connected to the network. Thus if your network had 1 Wireless B device, 2 wireless G devices and a wireless N device, and your neighbor's network had 3 Wireless N devices, your neighbor's network speed would be much faster than yours.
Hi Folks, I'm new here so hi! Tethering (fully authorized by my carrier) with my US version Nexus 5 worked very well for the first two weeks of use. Recently with strong service its data connection drops when I tether to my PC. While tethering the N5 to my iPad or my wife's iPhone there is never a problem and the connection is never lost. The strange part is it is intermittent, but happens often. Also it will drop the connection with full signal strength and in different parts of the house, so I don't believe this is coverage issue. This also occurs via USB tethering also. Any suggestions how to make this stop, explain what is going on, check for bugs?
I am living in Italy and have service via TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile) with a 20GB plan and 8 GB left on my monthly allowance.
If it helps with suggestions, the device is running completely stock AOSP and am not rooted.
I'm loving my z3 but for the life of me I cannot get a tidy wifi connection.it doesn't drop the actually connection but just freezes or slows down to an unusable amount.it's not my wifi as I have tested my note 3 on the same connection and it's the same on other networks.does anyone else have this problem or a solution

I am struggling with Wifi speeds on mine. I am having to switch to 4g regularly.
I am not too worried yet as I have 8gb data, but eventually i'll be worried as it runs out lol/
The speed tests show a good speed and ping, but it disconnects or slows down/freezes a lot.
I'm waiting on updates.
Thanks for the reply.I get data fine over 4G too.the chappy wifi is annoying as I have wifi everywhere I go...but no 4G signal at home

Confirmed, same experienced here.
Didn't the z1 have this problem
That may depend on the router or its settings. Had the same "freeze" issue when connected to my AVM 7490 router set to use channel 100 for 5GHz. Ever since I changed it to channel 48 no more such problems so far.
My bluetooth is similarly awful, in both range and functionality.
WiFi constantly drops and freezes, always has a weak connection compared to my other devices.
Sony have always cheaped out on wireless chips for any of its hardware products, especially things like playstation products (PS4 wifi is the worst I've ever seen), but I didn't expect it for a £500 smartphone!
Ditto. Great 4G on a 10GB cap.
But shocking wifi. It won't connect to I my router half the time, and the other half drops the connection after 10 minutes.
Out of various devices it's the only one, and I've had more devices on.
I'll change the chanel, clear dhcp allocations and usual stuff and see if there is any difference

Mine seems to have sorted itself out.had excellent wifi at home and up the parents.
Yeah for all their positives sony do pass on some crud wifi chips. Ps4 good example.

I seem to of narrowed my problems down to the router at work so Yaay lol.
As for Ps4, I think they're getting some unfair stick. I have mine connected to crappy BT home hub and the wifi connection is excellent.

Swapped it for another router (I got a random duplicate from my isp, glad I kept it) and the problems gone. Mostly. still drops from time to time. but usable

It seems to be random. My mate has a launch day model like me, and his WiFi is excellent to his 6 year old Sky wireless G router.
I have the newest homehub, one of the best rated routers on the market right now, and the connection from my PS4 to it is incredibly unstable. Every online game lags horrendously, especially BF4. Plus on my 80mb connection it allows for 3MB/s downloads at most. With an wired connection, no lag at all, and the download speed hits max every time.
The same thing seems to apply to the Z3. So its a sony thing. My first Z3 the wifi and BT were unusable. 3rd Z3, and wifi is the best I've ever used on a mobile device, and I havent even connected to my AC network yet to try. Bluetooth I've yet to try though.

AVM Fritz!Box here, newest model, got it when I moved because I'm on a business contract, even though I didn't want it. Has a multiuser NAS, SmartHome and whatnot, and one app for everything.
But when on WiFi with my MacBook Pro, ping times sometimes go up to over 250 ms, then back down to the usual 12. I have no idea why, it doesn't happen when connected to it via Ethernet. Bandwidth itself never seemed to be an issue though, and the Z3 performs great with it though.
TL;DR: Trying a different router can make a huge difference.
I was having the same wifi issues...my network was saved, I kept re typing my password thinking maybe I entered it in incorrectly but kept getting the "Authentication Failed" message. I was able to get the phone connected to my home wifi buy simply hitting the "Forget" option...then it automatically read the IP address and accessed the network...smh hopefully this helps for Everybody else....or some at least
