Can MMS messaging on Solo in Canada work without data? - General Questions and Answers

A friend of mine is on Solo with a Samsung Galaxy 551 with no data. His plan does include texting but not data.
His apn settings are set to the recommended settings on the Solo website.
I phoned their customer service and he informed me that he needs to have a data plan to send and receive mms messages, but anyone else on any other provider with a non-smartphone can do it just fine.
Does anyone know if this is actually the case? If there is a way for him to get it working without costing extra, or if they're just trying to sell a data plan?
Thanks very much

No it will not work. MMS uses 1kb of data that the company waves with a texting plan. If data is blocked so is mms. This is also the reason that firewall apps have to allow the messaging app to have data access.

I can confirm this as well, my mom has an mms plan on her droid but because she turns off her data because she does not have a plan she can no longer send an MMS

Now if he was to enable his data on his phone, not have a data plan, and change his apn to only be an mms apn, in other words remove the internet apn would that work for him?
Would it fall into the data that they would waive under his texting plan? Or is all data blocked at the provider side when you have no data plan?

All data is blocked on the carrier side.

MMS with Data Off?

Hey,
I do not have a data plan with my carrier because virtually everywhere I go has WiFi, so I leach off of this. Because of this, I disabled the data connection so I don't wind up with any accidental charges. But, this leaves me unable to send or receive SMS messages. Has anyone found a good solution for this? Thanks!
If you cant send SMS thats not a data issue. If you mean MMS then:
Here (T-Mob UK) i have 2 connections, my internet connection & my MMS connection. If i receive a media message, the phone connects to the latter - free - and downloads the message.
If i send a mms, it connects again (still free for the data) and sends it. I get billed per mms sent, regardless of the ammount of data.
The internet connection isnt used for messages at all, but for everything else (and is billed per kb)
I'm talking about MMS, I mixed it up in the paragraph. I have to connections with AT&T: Media Net and ISP GRPS. So will just disabling the ISP GRPS connection allow me to send MMS without accidently connecting with Opera a day later on accident?
With AT&T, Data and Messaging are separate features. As long as you have a Messaging or Messaging Unlimited plan, you can send and receive text and MMS messages.
Yes I realize that, but my issue is accidental data usage after the message is sent. I have unlimited MMS and SMS but I dropped the data because most places I go has wi fi. The issue is that I might send a message and an hour later it downloads my email from the data connection either when there is wi fi or not.
I do the same thing with my Fuze, I also have AT&T and use NoData. I just tried to send a MMS and it wont even connect to send it. I even uninstalled NoData and it wouldnt connect. I have done a little looking aroud and with AT&T any smartphone you use has to have a data plan to send MMS, it is true that it doesnt need it but AT&T wont let you connect to media net with out it.

This is correct. As far as I am aware there is no work around for it either. I used email for the longest time instead, but finally decided it was time to get a data plan. Its actually pretty nice.
I think this is very wrong of AT&T to do, I pay for unlimited text and MMS and I cant even use it. I have no need for the data plan, at home I have Wifi I also have it at work and my half hour drive I dont need to be connected to the internet. The only company I know that will let you do something like this is T-Mobile, I did it with them when I had my blackberry.
Yeah it is a little unfair, although really the end user is at fault too for disabling the data feature to avoid accidental charges.
Side note- I thought that with Blackberrys you had to have the BB Data service as it is something RIM mandates or because its a licensing/contractual thing between them and the carrier.

You only need the service books for your carrier for mms to work on the Blackberry, t-mobile will give these out AT&T wont. For the Blackberry the work around is to put in a sim card that has a active BB data plan, it then downloads the service books and when you put your sim back in it will still connect with out charging you for it.
Can anyone tell me the settings to Connect to "Media Net" on AT&T? It would be really appreciated

[Q] Using MMS without a data plan

Hi,
I have a Nexus S with Koodo in Canada. I have the possibility to send unlimited MMS, but it doesn't seem to work. I called the tech support and they are telling me that the only way to be able to use that option, it is by enabling Data.
I don't have any data plan. I asked to the tech support if it was possible to block all the data except the MMS, but he said me no. The only way he gave me is when I'm trying to send a MMS, enable Data and turn it off after. The problem is that many applications automatically use the Internet when possible. For every MB, I would need to pay 3$...
Is it possible to activate Data, but blocking everything on my device? I'm sure their must be a way, like blacklisting every servers except the one dealing with MMS.
Any idea? I tried an application called Quick Settings, but it doesn't seem to work when Data is off and MMS is on.
Thanks
Have you tried to set your APN type to "mms" rather than "default"?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Is there a way to know before I activate the data that it won't sync my other applications?
I don't think so, but if you activate data with only an mms apn present, I don't think you will see a 3g icon in your status bar unless you're sending an mms.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
go to settings->wifi/networks->mobile data->apns->select your apn and edit it
Scroll to the very bottom setting, make sure it says ONLY "mms" and NOT "default, mms".
Alternatively, you can root your phone and install droidwall and select exactly which apps can access 3g/wifi.
I think it's a bit silly and disingenuous for your carrier to sell you an MMS plan knowing you don't have a data plan (and that MMS uses data) but then don't show you or direct you on how to then set it up e.t.c..
With Droidwall, can I prevent some apps from using 3G, but able to use WiFi instead?

It would be easier to try it for yourself . But yes, you can do that. I've just checked

Usually MMS plans come /w a specific APN that is set to "MMS" only as barqers explained earlier. Ofc this is getting a bit more "delicate" on devices that almost require a data plan to function at all (and try to enable it themselves on a fresh setup).

MMS without data

I think I figured out how to get just picture messages without a data plan, so now I can utilize the other half of my unlimited messaging plan. I'm not entirely sure if this works, but just change the APN settings to the T-zones default, (wap.voicestream.com) instead of the epc.tmobile.com APN. I did that because when I clicked just MMS (instead of MMS+internet) for the APN, the option for it to be used disappeared in the menu. I won't know until the bill refreshes online, but I think it worked.
I get picture messages all the time, on this sidekick and my old lx without any data (Mind you I got the stupid lx AFTER data was shut down). In fact, I'm on the $15 unlimited text plan right now for the time being, and when I received the pic, I wasn't on wifi.(if it can even be done on wifi)
Sent from my Sidekick 4G running PDT's Glorious Overdose.
Really?
Really? I've never been able to download MMS messages, and I've always had to have the Data connection running in order to download them. I've run every ROM in this forum and it's been that way for all of them.

How to block data?

My scenario is a little unique
I run this phone unlocked on AT&T without data. I actually have a data block on my plan, so my phone doesn't use any extraneous data from apps I can't control when I'm out of a wifi hotspot
My only problem is, I DO have unlimited texting, which also includes picture messaging. But if I block data, I can't receive picture messages.
Is there any way to block data but still be able to receive picture messages?
I'm trying to use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jeffdonahue.smozzy&hl=en
It is a great concept and would definitely become popular with some love.
Nice way to save data in a pinch too, or forgo the data plan all together if you don't use it much.
But I haven't been able to figure out how to have picture messaging enabled with data blocked.
Short and long answers to your question

Unique is a bit of an understatement, given that most carriers require a data plan in order to purchase a smartphone in the first place.

Short answer, AFAIK, yes. SMS (text) and MMS (multimedia messages) work fine over the standard cellular connection. They don't require wi-fi or the carrier's data network to be active.
To elucidate: I'm on T-Mobile, and though I signed up for the mandatory 2 GB data plan, I rarely use it because I control how my phone accesses wi-fi and T-Mo's data network. In Settings|Wireless & networks, Wi-Fi is off unless I need to use it, be it my home connection or a free provider like Panera while I'm at the restaurant. Likewise Mobile network is set to off, as well as Settings|Accounts & sync|Background data and Auto-sync (separate settings). I use the Extended Controls app for a detailed widget that includes wi-fi and data network toggles for when I need to use these capabilities. My husband is hearing impaired, so we communicate a great deal using SMS and MMS; and we've not had any difficulty with wi-fi and data network switched off.
In closing, it's to your benefit to thoroughly read the manual for the MT4GS. This information and more can be found there. Here's a link for the pdf from T-Mobile (the manual is by HTC, though): http://support.t-mobile.com/servlet...2-102-2-3529/mytouch-4g-slide-user-manual.pdf

You can run any phone on your carrier without data, as long as they can't recognize what it is (i.e. an unlocked phone from a different carrier)
But back to my question, AT&T tech support has told me that data needs to be enabled in order for me to receive MMS as part of my unlimited texting. On a non-smartphone, that would be no problem because there are no apps that constantly pull data in the background. If I disable mobile data on my phone, will my MMS still work? That's what I'm trying to do. Otherwise there's no way for me to avoid pay per use data charges, because my phone will keep pulling data

Why not try and see what happens, then let us know?
Sent from a digital distance.
I've been able to receive mms by disabling data, and deleting the "data" apn. Keep the mms apn, since if you delete that, you will not receive mms.
I have the connect to internet setting disabled, and have been able to receive MMS.

Lol, I did, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. It didn't work for me, that's why I asked

How do I know which is which?
I have about 8 APNs
I have attached screenshots of the list
The second picture is the same list, but just includes the other half of the APNs.
If you could let me know which one to delete, that would be great
Delete all Wap.cingular apns, leave the others. You must have data pay per use at a minimum to use mms because mms messaging functions over the data network. This is the same on all carriers. It's just how mms works. On Att, the data used as part of mms messaging is included in your messaging plan and will not charge your data pay per use.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply.
So if I enable data on my phone now, apps won't rack up data, will they?
MMS is a part of AT&T messaging, even though it uses data, you are correct.
I just don't want the rest of my phone pulling for pay per use data

Is mms possbile w/o data subscription?

I am using a Tmobile MVNO Solavei and I am thinking of downgrading to talk and text only. I am wondering if I will be able to send photos once I drop data service?
If not possible is there an app that can do this over wifi and send the pics to my contacts' phone numbers as well as receive?
