Hey guys,
got a brand-spanking-new N7 for Christmas and saw on a news site about a WebOS port.
Now, I'm not sure if any of you have seen the Nook Color forums but I'm gonna tell you, they hacked a 2010 $250 e-reader to run every version of Android and Ubuntu. I'm a tinkering kind of guy and decided to give this ago.
So pretty much I took instructions from here:
http://www.webos-ports.org/wiki/Nexus_7_Build_Setup
And installed to the device here:
http://www.webos-ports.org/wiki/Testing_Nexus_7
It is moderate-hard difficulty, especially for people who have never tinkered with this kind of stuff before. There's only so much I can do for you guys, but I have simplified the install process quite a bit.
I DO reccomend building it yourself if you can, because it provides a learning experience plus you can get the build fresh out of the oven.
Note: This is work in progress, some stuff may not work, alpha, blah blah most of you have heard it.
Without further ado, I present to you:
WebOS Installation Guide - Nexus 7 Edition
Windows:
1. Download Windows.zip
2. Extract all to one directory, make sure Nexus is plugged in & ADB on
3. Run "Boot.exe"
4. Wait.
Linux version to come; Mac i'm not so sure about.
Credits: ALL credits go to WebOS-ports for making this port in the first place. I just made it easier for the common user to test this thing out. You can thank me if you like but please remember to do so to WebOS-ports as well.
Notes:
-This is an alpha build, according to the dev. It's nothing you could use everyday as an OS but this stuff is fun to play with
-I nor WebOS-ports take responsibility for your device in anyway! I don't care if your cat dies because it ate your N7 running WebOS, or you caused WWIII, or whatever. Please take caution.
Looks interesting and I am the tinkering kind of guy myself. Down to check it out. Oh, and I always wanted to say it.....FIRST!
Wouldn't you be second cuz he was the first guy to post something

You are very correct this is not something to use everyday, but it's something.
Thanks, gonna use this later... Seems cool. WebOS is HP's operating system right??

Yeah it is a bit hard to compile. Good luck to both of you.
If you get stuck, there's a reason I posted this
not working for me. it pushes the images, reboots to fastboot/bootloader and gets stuck there. nothing happens.

For me it's stuck at "booting downloaded image".
I started compiling this last night at about 11:00. Its 1:00 pm now. This morning when I went to bed the terminal said 'preparing run queue' and had for about two hours. This morning when I woke up terminal reads 'Currently 1 running tasks (1801 of 4600): 0: webkit-webos-1.3-0.54-r10 do_compile (pid 9944). Been this way for a long time now. When i scroll up the terminal window I see some warnings. Repeated several times is QA Issue: package qt4-webos contains bad RPATH and repeated several times before that is QA Issue: No GNU_HASH in the elf binary: Am I on the right track or is something screwed up? I'm using an older PC running Ubuntu 12.04 with core 2 duo and only 4 GB of ram so I figured it would take a while. When I started the build I also got a message in the terminal saying this build has never reportedly been done on my machines configuration and to let them know if it works. Something along those lines.

(This is a re-post from Android Hacking and General section; I developed this on a Mesmerize so I can promise it will work just fine on 2.1 and 2.2.1 stock kernels)
Requires a rooted device!
BackTrack 5 installation guides are making their way around this forum. I've tried to synthesize it all, but I've also added my own touches to help with usability and features, along with a workaround for the "ioctl LOOP_SET_FD failed" error message some people have been getting.
In theory this build is nearly universal, so if you have an Android device it should work. I've put it all in one zip file that you can download directly from my website, no hassles or wait timers.
If you are interested have a look, feel free to re-post. Credit goes to the BackTrack team and xda member anantshri (he's got skills, give him props guys), who built the base image file.

BackTrack is an operating system based on Ubuntu Linux that is used for security testing (aka hacking) and digital forensics. I'm a master's degree student in computer security, so I love this OS... it can do awesome things. Turn on your Wi-Fi and you can do advanced network scans and tests right from your phone, no laptop required. For me this is hella-useful.
But besides just being an OS for hacking ****, it's also fully Ubuntu-based, so you can run it like a desktop, including running Firefox and other Linux applications.

I doubt this is possible to do via a phone, but can you crack wifi networks using this?
Wait, so let me get this straight.... this is an ubuntu based os that will run on the mesmerize???
If so, HOW? Dual boot? Or complete rom replacement?
My curiosity is peaked.
EDIT: nevermind, I just followed the link and read it... i'm a little disappointed haha but I might try it out just for the hell of it.

Assuming the Wi-Fi chipset supports it (and it probably does) then yes, you could, but it will take a lot longer than, say, if you had a laptop, since Wi-Fi cracking always involves cryptographic computations.

It still runs pretty nicely, especially considering you are running it on a phone And for what it's worth, having to use VNC as the GUI is often a plus; it's nice to be able to switch back and forth quickly.

Just like an app. Specifically it uses the concept of a "chroot" to run it from inside of Android's Linux kernel. You can even switch back and forth between the two instantly.

Correct, under normal circumstances. I'm going to cover my ass here and remind you that you'll be running this stuff as root, so if you start deleting files willy nilly you can still blow away your Android system requiring a re-flashing.
But as long as you aren't an idiot you'll be just fine, lol.

Hello everybody,
I am quite new to android as i just bought this phone 3 months ago and before that i had an iphone.
I know everybody is happy with the upcoming ICS and the SDK that could be used for theme's, sounds and even more. but i know some of you are looking for a port from the SDK.
At this moment i am working on a port for the Sensation, but i have little to no knowledge on porting roms and such. so it takes a little while. but good news is i got it to boot up the service ril-daemon, and as far as i can see it will take a little bit more work till it will boot up fully.
If by any chance i can get it to work i do not promise that anything will work.
but i just wanted you guys to get a heads up on what i am doing at the moment and if anyone likes to help with development you are welcome to throw me a PM..
I will be updating this thread every once in a while when i have made progression.
A lot of work has been done. and i have made something that boots but needs a lot of work.
Whats working
-backlight screen
-buttons
-volume buttons
-boots
-hw acceleration (not tested just yet)
-screen
whats not working
-touchscreen
-all the rest.
we just got the screen working but wanted you guys to know it. we will test things out and upload later on.
device has got graphics working, but a load of services are failing so we still need to fix those things and hopefully get touch working soon as well.

ICS SENSATION v0.0.3
Just for dev only at this moment.
I'm excited either way.atleast someone is attempting a port. Alot of the devs look at it as a waste of time, but I don't think it is, especially if its as useful as the nexus s port. I wish you good luck my friend and if your looking for anyone to test, don't hesitate to PM me.

Glad to see someone with better ability wants this too.
I myself have been trying this just flashed my first .zip file last night have not even run a log cat on it yet. So you are way further then me. I have also been doing a lot of research through the forums and plan to expand my research to other places on the web tonight to see if might come across anything. I got a lot of reading and learning to do as I am certain you know way more about what you are doing. Best of luck to you and I will PM you if I come across anything you might could find useful.
Oh yeah by the way you probably should have posted this in the development forums, that is if you do not already have a thread there. I have not visited the development forums today yet.
Best of luck to you.
you're way ahead of me too - zips won't even flash for me (no idea why) and if I do bludgeon one into working, then logcat doesn't work
Nice, three devs working on this. I'm really happy right now. You guys should just all work together on this so our device will be the second or third to actually run the port

I've gotten connecting to the network working so far. SMS seems to work fine and it lists my network. I'm unable to use the data though. It just tries to connect but fails. Unfortunately system/bin/sh doesn't work so no logcat currently to see why.
EDIT: Removing /system/bin/sh and replacing it with a symlink to /system/bin/ash seems to have worked. Now I can run logcat at boot at least.

But tarends messaged me and it seems like he is very close to a fully booting build. I suggest you PM tarends and ask him if he can give you a run down on what he has, I have not asked if he wants to discuss everything here in the forums yet. He would probably would not mind but I would rather ask first. I think I might have a lead on what to do to get my build to flash. I am not sure but I think I have to edit the build.prop cause it is looking for 4 mount points but only finds 3. someone on the GNEX general page also has a post up, they claim that canonical will be releasing images in the next few weeks.
Im hoping our Devs catch wind of this and help with the digging/porting. I dont assume any huge hurdles outside of it only being gsm 3g and losing buttons as Ubuntu needs no physical keys outside of volume power.
most are claiming that once the image is released that it shouldnt be more difficult than a simple cwm flash.

Just saw this over on PCW. Am very excited. I've already been using Glovebox for about two weeks, so the full Ubu OS would be great to try out on my H0X.
A quick comparison of other HTC devices listed seems to indicate that installation shouldn't be that much different from a standard unlock and install, except that it relies on ADB at the moment since it nukes your android install: So you'll have to push it via ADB rather than just flashing an image via CWM or TWRP. Looking at the DNA and the Desire for comparison seems to indicate that not all hardware drivers are currently fully linux compatible, so things like hardware buttons and cameras are going to take longer, as Android is a basdard child of linux and uses a few different structures, AFAIK

Hello xda friends,
I've dusted off the relay 4g & playing around with android again to keep my hands busy.
My Question of the day is, are there enough people still using this device to be testers? I've been looking at porting since that's just what I've always done for fun, and currently I'm using the LG G3 on verizon so I won't be able to do network/data testing on tmo.
The other thing, I left off on 4.2/4.3 and wondering if anyone can fill in the blanks regarding issues going to KK/LP.
I've already read some posts regarding memory leaks in LP, and Recovery issues I think..
Happy Modding!

Dude, drop in to IRC. Dev is pretty close to dead on Relay right now, since Nard and I don't *have* relay's any more, and Magamo's busy in his new parental role...
Before I got rid of mine, I did get 5.0 running on it reasonably OK. Some of the inherent 5.0 glitches made the experience slightly.... crunchy, but it was fully functional. 5.1 would probably work pretty well on it.

teamapexq is the github.
Well I manage to build and boot 5.1.1, but has a ton of bugs currently.
Cam, BT, radio and a few ui issues, kinda cool to see it boot.

Finally got 5.1.1 booting using your device tree. Looks like sound, wifi & BT is borked. Likely do to cm-12.0 pulls & needs fixed.
Thanks for the direction & I'll see what I can put together, I'm sure I'll have to mess with the 8960-common now.
I'm surprised cm is not supported pasted 11. As I didn't have to mod frameworks?
Well, thanks again!

I've posted booting repositories if anyone is interest in getting cm officially supported again. Might jump into irc later to night & ask the guys about it.

As of the last time TeamApexQ's repos were touched, CM12 booted, but audio was borked due to a CM change that I never had the time to figure out. -- Never did get around to starting with Android 5.1 on this thing. Nor did we touch Omni after the 5 upgrade, because for a long time their CAF trees were... inadequate.
Eugene, did you gave up on our relay? I hope not.
Just found this thread. Been hoping for signs of life (although this thread is looking pretty dead). Still using the relay until it dies, and would love to see LP or MM on it.

I'm still here, though I agree things are looking pretty dead. Within the next few weeks, I plan to either be gone from here, or be looking into becoming a new nightly provider.
My wife's Relay is having problems, and I fear it's a hardware fault. The proximity detector seems to get stuck. When she takes it away from her ear, the screen stays black, and I'm really not sure what lets it clear its state and display the screen, again. If it's a hardware fault, we're buying two new phones in the next few weeks. I've tried all sorts of things, except a factory reset, and that's next.
If the factory reset works, and I'm able to get it running again, then I want to see new nightlies, even if I have to be the one building them. The sticky part will be getting enough assistance to where I can start building them.
I still use my Relay 4g as my main phone and I'm trying to port LP to it. But I'm still a noob so it will take some time
My main too. I really need to find the time to poke around the code for this thing..
Just noticed this thread now (ha!). I'm using my Relay as my backup phone - but hey, sometimes I do need a backup! Happy to do some testing if it helps. I'd love to have 5.1.1 on it.
Im still rockin the relay also as my main device, but I'm probably gonna get the priv for Christmas.
If there will be cm12.1 I will install it.

Same. The Blackberry Priv I hear has a super disappointing keyboard. I'm hoping Samsung picks up on the idea that people still want keyboards and makes SOMETHING for us.
