i'm thinking of getting the archos 101 tablet, not ready to shell out that much cash for a galaxy tab, and i was wondering if xda will have a forum for it. i'm hoping so becasue i would love to see a good amount of development for it. the specs are pretty nice for a budget tablet.
I'm getting the 101 also..
released officially in the States November 8th. A Monday. I have gapps4Archos.apk and market4archos.apk's if you need
i just saw where tigerdirect is letting you pre order, unfortunately they already sold their first shipment so they are not taking orders at this time. i called and talked to a rep and he said they will begin shipping them out on the 1st and expects them to be back up for order then. it really looks like a nice tablet, then add the low price to the nice specs and its a no brainer for me. i'm sure when better tablets come out next year i'll want to upgrade...but for now this tablet looks really exciting!
I have preordered my 101 too already. The e-store where I ordered it have said 9th. will be the shipping date. So only a weeke and a half to go
Would also love to see lots of development on Archos (and other future android tablets).
i'm still not sure where to preorder from, i was gonna order from tiger direct but it appears they are out for now....as well as amazon. the archos canada twitter site llnks you to a place that is still taking orders i may order from them not sure yet. i'd rather order from somewhere within the us though.

i pre ordered a 101 8gb this morning from http://www.archos.ca/ and the guy said it would be shipped out via ups the day he gets them in.
I'm really interested in the 101, but it only has 256mb ram... Thats really a Debbie downer for me. I'm looking at a Tegra 2 tablet too, but it seems like everywhere but the States is getting them.
I also emailed xda a suggestion for other tablets, including the Archos.
Yes I was hoping for more ram as well, but the original droid only had that much ram and I think it el be enough I'm sure I will get a gingerbread tablet next year anyways. Still really looking forward to getting this
Will HP be their cellphone inventory for the cheap too?
Maybe but I think that would more likely be a carrier decision. Hell most of them were already free on contract lol.
It was suggested that it would be better if hp had sent all the touchpads to a landfill(I dont think that). If its up to the carriers, they my do just that. I wonder if they already have warehouses of pre3's. I dont know if they even started producing them en mass.
A firesale, eh?
I may have to look into one of these things.
Aye - it will be - apparently the pre is scheduled to come down to 50 quid! - waiting for a word from our rep at the moment...
Please keep me posted. I would definitely like to get my hands on one as a spare phone.
My 9-year-old daughter really wants a tablet, and I'm considering getting her one of the ultra cheap ones that's floating around, especially in this cyber-sale week. She doesn't have the best history of caring for her things, so I don't want to spend more than $100 on something she'll likely break sooner than I'd like to know. I recognize this means I'll end up with junk, but I'm trying to filter the junk.
My main concerns are having at least Android 2.1, and the ability to hopefully hack the genuine Market onto it, although I'll settle for the Amazon Appstore. Being able to do all the basic things without being horrific at it would also be very nice.
Does anyone have a specific model they could point to? I'm seeing some Velocity Microsos and Pandigitals on sale, along with some cheap no-names from sites like ahappydeal.com, but I'm trying to make an informed decision.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DealExtreme.com have a lot of Android items. Just be sure to read the reviews. They may be extremely cheap but there are limitations. I use the website to buy cheap gadgets as gifts for my friends lol. But yea, if you need a simple Android tablet with a certain spec give them a try.

Yeah, I already buy a lot of things from there, but was hoping I might find someone who has more direct experience with a specific model.
I'd run up to Walmart, Staples, Office Max, or Radio Shack and see what they have in regards to e-readers. Velocity Cruz Micro is one I believe is sub $100 one at my local Radio Shack. Find one that you like for the price and then see if your able to load the market, or better yet a custom rom.
When your looking in the less than $100 catagory, that's probably your best bet. They're at least made with some care for the consumer in mind, where as an elcheepo china model isn't.

I've not seen anything there in a price point below the Nook Color you're writing from. Certainly no sub-$100 Android tablets. Or has their inventory changed recently?
Well Fry's, BestBuy or Office Max will probably be your best bet to get the feel. Read some reviews on NewEgg or something xD
Oh my bad sub $100. No go with retail stores. Definitely Ebay or DealExtreme. Hard to imagine local stores selling anything cheaper than that.

Fry's is a vague possibility, yes. The other two don't carry tablets that low-end, though. Not by a long shot.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!
Yes, I was looking at the Velocity Cruz units that were on sale on 1SaleADay today, but as I dug into reviews I wasn't liking what I saw. Some really odd limitations and compatibility issues that concerned me. Left me thinking they'd be no less of a frustration than the Chinese ones from the descriptions. Might not be accurate, but that's why I was hoping for people with some real-world experience who did some of the hacking themselves.
Well, I can't help you there, but I can tell you with these cheep units that your experience will almost be gauranteed to be a crapshoot. It might work for me, it might work for you, it might not. I'll dig around the net and see what I can find for you though. I'll report back in the morning, I gotta get some rest for the night.

Really appreciate the assistance. I've done some research of my own, too. I'd love to get her something really good, but I just know for a fact that if I do I'll get a call a week after Christmas that she left it out in the snow, or her dog chewed it up, or something. But I also don't want to get something that will frustrate her enough to CAUSE that.
Wasn't there a £30 7" tablet floating around eBay with a capacitive touch screen running 2.1 Eclair? I'm sure somebody mentioned it on these forums a while back and a few members bought one for family members, might be worth a look there.
Good luck finding one.
Well, most of what I'm finding is Chinese ones that break the hundred dollar mark after shipping and what not. The ones that stay below that either turn to vaporware or are ungodly aweful.

Ah I see, sorry I can't help you any more, I'm not really into tablets and stuff so whatever knowledge I have of the tablet market is very limited. Goodluck finding one, might be worth a look in a few second-hand shops and get a decent used one? My local CEX and Cash Generators etc sell HTC Flyers, Blackbery Playbook and iPads fairly cheap.
Might want to take a look at the amiga tablet ...

While I agree, which was my concern, if I go above that point it's both prohibitively expensive and a really stupid move on my part. I know her well enough to be shocked if this thing survives more than six months. If it does, then I can consider putting real money toward a good one for her. But this is basically a test run both of her responsibility and of how into it she really is.

Okay, now THAT's intriguing. I feel like there's got to be a serious catch, but it's intriguing. Might still be a shade too much to spend on her, but it's a starting point. Thank you.

You do understand the concept of a Christmas gift, yes?
Be very careful with cheap tablets. They are all extremely weak. Ugly performance, ugly screen. Your kid will hate android having this as first toy.
It is for kid. Buy used older device but good mark

Samsung is first to offer Windows Rt
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/1613638/windows_rt_samsung_ativ_tab_up_for_preorder.html
Sending from HTC Radar
That's a fair chunk more than I was hoping.
This in my opinion is MS's last chance to get a slice of the mobile market with their W8 Eco system.
With their partners charging that much, I don't hold up much hope.
I was in hopes, RT would be a touch lower in price. Seeing this amount does take some of my excitement away!!!!!
It has me on a rethink........
Maybe my best option is to snag a used W500 tablet and upgrade the O/S to Win8. Use the money I save to buy a pocket battery extender for use on long trips.

wow 550 pounds,
I look forward to see the price of the Surface
Those aren't going to sell at that price.
I saw they'll be asking $650 ($750 with keyboard without battery) for the Atom version.

holy crap you're so right!
I hope someone shoe horns Linux or Mac is onto these things, and directly after there is a fire sale ... then ill get one.
they really screwed themselves with pricing.
I'm seriously considering an Atom version right now since I don't think I'll need a Core CPU.
I haven't seen a Surface Atom version mentioned, but I hope they will exist since I think the form factor is pretty sweet.
The next few weeks should be pretty interesting, once reviews/prices/comparisons are released.

if you think the pricing isn't going to make these devices undesirable, that's a good point to argue.
No windows 8 pro for that price?

the two posts directly above mine that you quoted also were a little surprised at the price. after a little thought, it would be a very good idea to only sell these wp8/surface devices in the Microsoft stores: customers won't be able to see the 1/4 priced droid tablets or 2/3 prices I pads ( that everyone thinks is the second coming) and limit the leaching to other platforms.

ahhhh, ok, I see where you're going. no interest, sorry.
we'll see fairly soon how consumers feel about the pricing. the hardware is g r e a t, so I doubt that will be any reason for poor sales. pricing is sooooo cut throat in tab markets.

Might be essential add-ons? Maybe the dock or aux attachment.
I'm pretty sure it's Essential Home. It's been "coming soon" for 6 months.
Where are the other colors? Guess they scrapped that idea.

You're no going to make more colors when you haven't sold any devices in relative terms. Honestly, the two colors that they have now are plenty.
RE: "looks like essential has a big CES announcement planned"
What makes you say/post this?
I can not find a booth reservation for Essential, or any references to speakers presenting.
I have only read comments related to vendors displaying Essential Phone PH-1's at the show.
I (and others I would assume) would be interested in a bit more background on your opening post
He tweets his off to Vegas to unveil, and he works for essential!!!!!.Now we have new accessories launched today .

My thoughts exactly. It's pretty ridiculous. They have no logistics and customer service in Canada at all. Telus is exclusively running their entire distribution channel here. Hopefully Telus will offer accessories.
On the same note, since the PH-1 didn't sell well for Telus, if they discontinue their relationship with Essential this or next year, what will that mean for us? Would all these phones become unsupported? I would think that Essential would have to take ownership of the warranty and support at that point.

I'm hoping they do take over if Telus pulls out. I think they should support their devices in every country its legally sold otherwise whats the point of selling it with no support?
I took a chance with this because I love supporting the underdog but you would think that Andy Rubin would know how to handle all of this considering his background.
I have even sent a support request last month which was totally ignored. Not even a response to say talk to Telus.
So i got a reply to my original question of why we don't have support in Canada and why there is no purchase ability for Canada. They responded with this
They clearly pushed a generic email response.
Let down
the headphone were a let down. It still doesn't solve my problem of not being able to use my nice wired headphones while charging. Really was hoping for a dongle
