Music"not smooth" in playback issue - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I know this seems to be a silly problem, but this starts to become really disturbing. I don't know why when I play some music with my headset plugged into my phone, the songs play as usual, the quality is satisfactory, but lots of time the songs stop and continue by itself (buffer if you like) and you can obviously notice the gap between them (it is really small (about 1/1000 seconds; but you can definitely notice it and it is very disturbing when you are really in the music). I have this issue in my GT-N7100, but also in my MB860 as well, so I do not think this is a problem for a specific device. I've tried different audio drivers and different headsets (I am currently using the Beats one). If it doesn't changed anything. This problem happens most often when I am on a bus trip or in a car, but less frequent when I am at home or in a library. Does anyone has the similar problem and knows how to solve it? Thanks.

First I thought, it might be a RAM problem but for such a strong device as the GT-N7100 it shouldn't be a problem. Do you use a certain music player or does it happen with different players?
EDIT: If you are using some kind of equalizer, try turning it off and see if it helps.

Thanks for your reply, I previous use Poweramp with the MB860, and now PlayerPro for the GT-N7100. They all have the same issue. And I do not think it is a RAM problem too, since even when I use my iPod touch (with only 1 core), it plays music like charm!

I never use equalizer since it makes too much noise with some songs.

Ok, that was just a low CPU speed issue. I fixed it by setting it to at least 800MHz.

Anyone else have horrible music playing experience?

If I use the stock player, which seems nice, as soon as I enable an EQ, I get this terrible effect that sounds like it's being over compressed. It happens with all the eq settings, and even custom.
I stated using Mixzing and it's a great player, the eq is awsome, but when I play songs it skips all the time.
That's odd. Mine doesn't seem to suffer from any compression with EQ use.
I don't actually use EQ but i have some poor experience playing music at times.
Sometimes when I'm listening to music through the headphone port and the phone does something (receive a text message or just use data or something) there are audible pops and clicks in the audio. Once the phone is done doing what it's doing they stop
I experience the same small pops and hesitations when playing music. Mine occur both from the speaker and the headset jacks. Sometimes I can play an entire song and have no noise, but most of the time it occurs a couple of times during a song. Very annoying.
Mine doesn't do that either. Good for me I guess, but odd.
I also have noticed the same issues. Especially when there is an incoming call. Granted, IM not stock, running cog 2.1.5
Sent from my Captivate
Yeah, I get the crackling noises too, but haven't noticed whether it's only with mixzing or stock player.
same issue here with the stock player AND mixzing. others have said that apps running in the background cause this issue but I tested that by killing everything in the background first and the issue still occurs. I know that android will auto-start stuff it needs but if the stock apps kill the music quality, then they have more fixes to release.
Weird, when I get a notification my music stops completely just to play my tone... is this normal? Any way to disable this? Hell I didn't even know stock player had EQ adjustments, where do I find them?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Bluetooth playback is when I notice the most distortion. I don't bother with any kind of EQ.
I get clicks and pops from all headphones, anything I connect the phone to, car, stereo, anything connected to the headphone jack.
I've tried and listened to music using all of these and get clicks and pops from all of them.
Stock player
MixZing
Cubed player
Tunewiki
Meridian
The player from Cyanogen mod
Pandora
Last.fm
Astro player
Every music player app I've tried clicks and pops, pauses and stutters. It does this no matter the encoding of the file, no matter the source, it clicks and pops and clicks and pops. It's worse than the cheapest mp3 player I've ever owned and frankly, I wish I could return this phone to AT&T but I'm past my 30 days. I really expected some updates, real updates for the GPS which is why I kept it past the 30 days. I thought the clicks and pops were a fluke, but to this day, GPS sucks and the music player clicks and pops. It's beyond annoying and if I could return it, I would.
Earlier today the GPS had me in Bakersfield, CA, over 2,000 miles from where I actually was. 2,000 miles!
And no, the explanation "it's a phone, not a gps or a media player" is not acceptable. These are features we pay for as customers. And a fix for these issues means I don't have to screw around with custom ROMs and settings and hacks and blah blah. It should just work, period.
Click click.. click click...
Yes, I get clicks and pops and stutters, yes I do...
...and yes, I've tried all the various buffer options in the MixZing app and am using the full PAID version, PAID version of the app. That would be the media player I bought because the stock one that comes with the phone can't read playlists created elsewhere. If you have even a moderate music collection it's absurd that the damn stock player can't read a standard playlist file and users would be expected to create all their playlists on their device. Ridiculous.
May I suggest you try two things and see if it helps:
1. Try a lag fix if you haven't already
2. Download SetCPU, lock the cpu at 1GHz and try music
I'd be very interested to see if either of these would help, have you tried factory resetting or a new ROM?

[Q] ICS problem with music, podcast player and everything audio related

Hi all,
ICS 4.0.3
Ver. 3.32.707.10
I was wondering if anybody else is encountering similar problems.
Ever since the ICS update, my music player, podcast player (beyondPod) and e-book audio player have gone crazy.
I cannot understand the logic behind it, but the player either stops, skips, pauses, jumps... u name it. Not all the time, but (please do not laugh!) when the car door is slammed shut.
It got me thinking. Is it the shock or the vibration? Tapping or gently bashing the phone does not disrupt the player. Only door of the car closing. It happens every morning and every night when someone gets off the car before me.
Rebooting, taking battery out, clearing out some stuff from my Micro SD... simple stuff to eliminate causes have had no success.
Only rebooting the phone can solve the problem. Force closing the app does not help.
I was thinking that after a heavy days use, maybe the RAM was running out, bu the problem starts even within 20 min of reboot, with no other unnecessary apps running.
I am using Jays headset app since my headphone has that button that allows me to stop/play skip and volume control etc. This has nothing to do with it? I have had it for a while since Gingerbread...
If it were apps from the market that was problematic, i can understand. But since this affects the stock music player as well as other audio related features, I am baffled.
Anybody else? Suggestions?
Found the definitive cause. But still have no solution.
OK guys and gals...
I had my podcast player and stock sense music player do crazy stuff on me, ever since the ICS update.
Maybe the scratched paint is the cause of headache for some people, and covering/insulating it may relieve it of problems, but my feeling is that for quite a few that have posted on this thread, their reasons of malfunction differ, and in fact, are on the same boat as I am.
Please read my post which is the link below to understand the full symptom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24511005
I am not sure if ICS update from GS is related to this problem directly or indirecty. All I know is that I had a happy sensation until the update OTA.
Here is the reason why I know that neither the paint or back cover of sensation is the cause of skipping/jumping/stopping/calling last contacted....
I tried the experiment with the back cover off, but I could not replicate the problem, thus no paint chip, back cover or short circuit of any kind is the answer.
So, by method of deduction, with the cover off, I tried wriggling the headphone in the socket to see if that had any effect. None. I tried plugging and unplugging. None. I tried using the remote button to control the music app and the podcast player. No problem. The play/pause/vol up and down etc all worked fine. I even uninstalled the jays app and tried. Without the app, the button on my headset does play and stop, answer and end calls. It got me thinking, and the environment it caused the symptoms only could point to the mic on my headphones.
And guess what? It is the bloody Microphone on the headset. I bet you there are some of you with this problem using the stock headset supplied that have built in hands free.
Basically, the pressure spike caused by slamming of he car door, is the same effect as blowing into the mic of the headset. And once this is done, the only way you can stop is reboot.
Since there have been no posts on this thread, and while I was hunting desperately for answers, I came across a different thread. Similar symptoms. I posted there too, so u might want to take a peep.

Weird symptom. Possible solution? (Apart from using headsets without mic)
I have the same problem with my Sensation after i flashed the ICS. I have flashed two different custom ICS and with both i had the same problem. The music app goes crazy. I haven't find any pattern on what is that that cause the music app go crazy. When I touch the jack of the headphones (the original headphones of the Sensation) the app start forwarding, skipping track pause, etc. Also the same happens when i put the phone in my pocket. I haven't found any solution but maybe is the signal from the microphone as you said. When i shake the jack i think that signal noise i created and makes the app go crazy.
I hope someone will find a solution soon.
I just found a way to hear music in my ICS Sensation. I just disabled the default music app in the app settings that comes with the rom and i have installed the ESfile explorer which has its own music player. I am using ESFileExplorer's music player and i don't have problems till now...
Hope this is useful for someone.
I think issue is software related. Look here:

Does it happen ONLY when using headsets? I have the same problem, but is caused by the jack connector (only in ICS). It randomly sends signals that the phone understand as multimedia commands. If you remove the headsets and play the music with the speaker, no problem at all.
Crap.

Occasionally. Maybe every 3 or 4 shows that I watch.
Hmmm, it's a right pain in the minge isn't it?
Still, could be worse.
I'm actually more annoyed at my recent upgrade for PowerAmpPro. They got the album art right but it freezes in mid-song. Often. Oftener than Netflix anyway.
I have also encountered this problem unfortunately... I just want to enjoy my Dr. Who darn it...

I was having some glitchness with Poweramp when I first installed it. It would freeze if the screen went off. My solution was to disable the screen from turning off while the player was active and on top. It will play for 4 or 5 hours without any interruptions that way. Not the best work around power wise. There has been one or two versions released since I originally had that issue (currently on build 2.0.5.-build-488 Full Version), so not sure if the problem is still there in the newer versions
As for the Netflix issue, I've been hoping that they'd release a magical update fixing the issue on the 7.0+, but I'm not holding my breath. Maybe if/when ICS drops it will work right...
Thanks. I'll try that out tonight, see if it makes a difference.
Speaking of audio difficulties have you experienced the low level audio fluctuations that are bothering a number of us. Different apps, different audio streams, all with annoying varying audio at low levels.

I can't say I have noticed the low level volume issue ever. I mainly use poweramp/tab 7.0+ connected to a mixer and amplifier at work, so i never have at it set to low. Haven't noticed any volume issues on netflix on headphones either (rarely use low volume for anything i suppose).

[Q] Major static when using Equalizer app

I installed Equalizer and was happy with it, until last night. I've eliminated the headphones and the Note itself as the culprit. (Headphones work fine on MP3 player, and audio sounds great from speakers. Also, initial "Samsung" startup sound is fine through headphones.)
I'm getting A LOT of sort of squeaky static when using Equalizer, either with Music Player or Video Player. The static doesn't start right away, but after a minute or two. I REALLY like the way the audio sounds with Equalizer (minus the static), so I'd like to keep using it. But it's unbearable the way it is. I poked around in the Equalizer settings, as well as Music Player settings. I've got my Music Effects set to Equalizer. I have no other sound effects app running.
Also, I can't seem to disable Equalizer. I force stop it, and it keeps coming back to appear in my notification area. Can't find a setting for that, either.
Anyone else have any issues with this app?
Thanks!

Just noticed the same issue myself. I'm not 100% sure it's because of Equalizer yet, though... still have to do a few more tests. But it does seem to be the likely culprit.
I know what you mean... I really like Equalizer, so I'd love to be able to use it, but I think the static problem would be a deal killer for me if the app turns out to in fact be the cause of the problem. I'm especially choked since I JUST paid for the full version, like half an hour before realizing the problem!
BTW, for what it's worth, I'm using an Asus Transformer Infinity.

Just so as to not tarnish the reputation of Equalizer, I've now come to the conclusion that the problem is NOT in fact the Equalizer app. It happens with or without Equalizer running, and regardless of whether "Music effects" in settings is set to the stock option or Equalizer.
What I just found out today is that the problem seems to be related to playing of media off of the microSD card. When I play a movie off of the microSD, I get that buzzing sound. But when I play the exact same file off of the internal storage, it's gone! I guess this is a sign that there's some interference being generated by the microSD port that isn't properly shielded. Lame, since I was using the strategy of keeping all my movies on a microSD card (and a strategy I'll now have to change), but at least it's resolvable.
Try another SD card. I also keep the media files on the SD card and I have no problems .

I have a Samsung Galaxy A8, and when I play mp3s I get weird static sounds and popping noises, I also experienced this on the Samsung Galaxy S8. However when I would play the same song through YouTube on my phone I wouldn't get the noises. After reading this thread and trying all the different suggestions to no avail I thought to myself hang on I'll try and play an mp3 on my (Samsung Galaxy Tab a 10.1. SM-T580) To my surprise no static or popping noises. I am not sure as to why this is however I thought I would mention it for you or other people to work out a possible workaround.

A serious bluetooth audio latency problem on OP6

Bluetooth audio has latency. We all know it. Using my Aptx-enabled bluetooth earbuds on my OP6 while watching YouTube, Plex, VLC, etc has no discernable latency. Perfect.
However, on my OP6 I have a massive issue: all games, not matter what kind they are, have around 300-500 ms+ of lag, making any game of any kind totally unplayable, from the resource-intensive PUBG mobile to any random 2D side scroller indie title. ALL games. ALL the same lag with audio only over bluetooth.
I have two nice bluetooth earphones, and various cheapie ones, and ALL of them exhibit this problem, including the aptx, bluetooth 4.0, 4.1, and 5.0 ones. This is also true on clean flashes of OOS 5.1.8, 5.1.9, 5.1.11, and both open betas for Pie. NO difference whatsoever in terms of bluetooth lag: all videos and other streaming services perfect, all games completely unplayable.
I've messed with every normal bluetooth menu and developer options bluetooth menu settings I can find.
Am I missing something here?
Sorry for your problem man, but I use oneplus's bullets wireless earbuds 99% of the time and I have zero issues.

Thanks for the sympathy. It's indeed frustrating. No one is talking about this that I can find.
So you have no real audio latency in games at all? My latency is huge and anyone would notice it, so if you say no, I believe you. What are some specific games that you play?
I've actually had my sights on the bullets. I know they use aptX, which is supposed to be great for latency...but I already have some aptX earbuds! Is there something else technology-wise going on with the bullets that would have a different result than mine?
I used to face latency but somehow it got solved after I uninstalled V4A. But what I have noticed is that volume on Bluetooth devices varies. Like it reduces suddenly and then gradually rises to the set value.

I've never installed V4A
I really don't notice any audio lag. I don't play too many games though, Minecraft, asphalt 9, and fortnite are the only games I play regularly. And I'll occasionally download a random game from time to time.
However, my phone is also rooted with magisk 17.1 and I have a few audio modifications. All modules I have that could possibly change audio are Viper4Android through xxx NoLimits 2.9.2 (along with whatever else that installs that affects audio), Android audio fix, and audio compatibility fix. Maybe one of those fixed the problem?
As for the bullets wireless, these are the most expensive earbuds I've had, which obviously makes them best, but they are really good, especially when you use them with V4A. However, I can't recommend you going out and spending $70 on more headphones with the possibility that they'll still lag for you, that's your call.
I have no idea what the problem is for you, but that seems really frustrating, I hope you figure it out or it works itself out. Best of luck to you.
i would suggest maybe clearing the bluetooth cache? Its an odd issue, but i've experienced it before as well, on youtube nonetheless. Then it somehow just went away. i dont play games on my phone, so im not sure this will work, but its worth a shot.
Even though this flash is under 24 hours old, I just tried clearing the bluetooth cache. No luck.
I also tried installing V4A and messing with some settings. No change for better or worse. All video content is synced perfectly, all audio in games lagging behind badly.
same here dude, lags only at games, with or without v4a + audio fixes for multiple v4a and sauron

Thank you! You are the first person to mention this that I've seen. Maybe we are the only two people in the world who play games on a OP6 with bluetooth audio, or do other people really not notice a near half-second delay with all sound effects with they play literally any game on the Play Store? You'd think that would come up somewhere...
So what do we do now?

I can't help but think this is a hardware problem...but because we have no latency issues with videos at all, how does that point to a hardware issue?
Is there any news about this, because really it suck that we cannot play a game with BT, even when i chat there is latency between pictures and audio, at first i thought it was because of the bad connection or something but when i tried pubg ther was latency, but with the walking dead there was none , very strange

I'm a Youtuber bro playing heavy games fac same problem ?
Why does not a SINGLE review mention this? Why is this a tiny 2 page thread and nothing else? Are people who play some games with a BT device really so few?
I also faced this and switched to wired headphones, maybe we should raise a bug report to OnePlus, hope they can do something.
Did this mean audio lag?
i have problem with playing spotify... it sometimes like blank for 1-2 seconds then sound appear again.
And, playing youtube also same... video still playing.. but sound disappear for around 2 secs and appear again.
This when i playing thru Mi bluetooth speaker.
