Well, I have a question regarding the screen resolution. They say it is qHD but when I'm going to download a game or it's data it's all about VGAa like HVGA blah blah blah.
Is qHD a non-standard screen resolution? If it is OK, then what VGA resolution it mostly and better corresponds to?
qhd (960 * 540) is indeed a standard 16:9 resolution. FWVGA (854×480) seems to be the closest VGA match. This link has the details of video resolutions.

When using the MHL cable to output the phone's screen to the TV, The video is not nearly as crisp as it is when I play it back later on the computer. I assume this is because the device is showing the compressed video form on the device which is what is being output?
Is there any way to output a better quality version to the TV? (App, etc) Has anyone else felt the same way?

I just picked up the MHL dongle last week. Works great! Love it!
I think VIDEOS I've shot on the Sensation look like 1080p/720p on my Plasma HDTV... to my eye at least. I assume that's what you're talking about....videos you've recorded or HD You Tube vids etc?
Are you for sure recording in HD? 1080p/720p?? I think by default, the Sensation is set to qHD res in the camcorder settings.
You may already know this, but for those who don't.....
The UI on the phone isn't going to be true HD on your HDTV, as the Sensations display is only qHD 960x540. 720p is 1280X720 and 1080p is of course 1920x1080....officially. There is NO compromise on the official HD resolution standard. It either is or isn't HD....qHD is a marketing term...it looks like true HD on mobile devices, but it's not truly HD.
As far as I can tell though.... it does indeed output true HD resolutions from media etc....but not the UI itself. Videos I've recorded look stunning on my plasma....the UI of course looks grainy.
Hope that helps somebody. If I misstated anything...please correct me
That's correct you have to manually change camcorder to 1080P mode.

Thanks! Yeah I am up to date on my resolution knowledge , and Yeah I guess it outputting it in HD, it just is a little jittery, and for fast moving objects (I was recording ping pong XD ) it looked much smoother when I pulled the file off and played it on the computer.
Where are you guys getting your MHL cables? Are they the official HTC ones?

qHD isn't actually marketed as HD... it's qHD because it's (q)uarter HD, as in 1/4 of the HD resolution. 1920 / 2 = 960, and 1080 / 2 = 540. Divide length and width each by 2, and the overall number of pixels gets divided by 4.
It's not just a marketing term.

Correct...it is actually quarter HD, of course....hence the "q". What I meant by marketing term is that a vast majority of people out there see the "HD" and may think it's actually HD...when of course it's not.

if i watch a 1080 p video would the desire s get all the pixels are will it only use 480p or the800p. what would be the differnce between 720 p and 1080pvid.thanks for all answers.
Sent from my MildWild for Desire using XDA
720p video resolution: 1280x720.
1080p video resolution: 1920x1080.
Desire S' screen resolution: 800x480 (horizontally).
Meaning: anything above 800x480 is a waste of pixels that you won't see, and extra load on the CPU that will need to resample it to 800x480 on the fly.
I have two android phones. Both of them have the same resolution and similar display size (as per company specifications), TFT capacitive touchscreen, 256K colors, WVGA resolution 480x800 pixels. The only small difference is..one has a display size of 3.5 inches and the other 3.75 inches....not much of a difference.
However, the phone with the 0.25inches larger display size shows pixel grids horribly and in the other one it doesn't show at all. What could be the reason? I also see banding on the larger display, which is not present in the other.
The larger display seems like a display with much less actual resolution. Does phone resolution specs on paper of the larger display lie? How do I check the actual resolution of a display?
The attached image below shows what I mean by pixel grids being visible.
It also depend on the technology being used (TN panel, IPS or AMOLED), the quality control come into play, and subpixels arrangement. Paper spec for display are useless, it's better to see the phone in person.
I've always wondered...
On my Nexus 9 which has 2048 x 1536 resolution, how does a 1080p file display so smoothly?
Logically speaking, i would imagine all those 1080p be blown up and stretched to fit the full screen of the display. However, it seems the video is just as crisp as the original.
Is there some magic involved when a video is set to full screen?
Or is it in reality being stretched but my eyes can't distinguish?
You could tell that the quality of a 720p game forced to 1080p looks horrendous.
How do videos in full screen actually work?
Thanks for the education lessons!
To display 1920x1080 image on 2048x1536 screen it's need to be upscaled from 1920x1080 to 2048x1152 (the rest will be filled with black bars). It's just 7% increase, which is hardly noticeable on video content.
Example: 1920x1080 source.
Downscaled to 1366x768, downscaled to 1280x720 and upscaled to 1366x768 (same 7% increase).
Games that ran at subnative resolution are a different thing:
1) They're very aliased.
2) They have pixel-perfect elements like fonts and osd.
3) They're upscaled using fast methods with low quality. They run at sub-native resolution exactly because perfomance is low.
Thanks for that informative reply!
So is it safe to say, it's actually better to get a device with 1920 x 1080 resolution, just for perfect viewing?
Well yeah, but then you would be forfeiting a larger screen. Like vivan said, it's only a 7% increase upscaling the 1920x1080 to 2048x1152,

I would say that it barely matters - probably subtle difference will be noticeable if you'll switching between 2 devices, but other differences between displays will be way more noticeable.
If I were to select - it would be the last thing I will consider (while first will be display quality and perfomance).
Also you can always switch to 100% zoom mode - it will add small borders on all sides.

According to the gsm areana site (which is usually pretty accurate for this sort of stuff), the full spec details for each of these models are as follows:
OnePlus 6:
External Dimensions: 7.5 mm thickness (no data on length and height as of yet, until officially announced, but the screen size may give you some idea)
Screen Size: 6.28 inches, 98.4 cm2
Resolution: 1080 x 2280 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~402 ppi density)
https://www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_6-9109.php
OnePlus 5T:
Dimensions: 7.5 mm thickness
Screen Size: 6.01 inches, 93.7 cm2 (~80.0% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution: 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9 ratio (~401 ppi density)
https://www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_5t-8912.php
As you can see the thickness of both phones appears to be the same, however the screen size is not. (the screen on the OnePlus 6 looks like it will be bigger than the OnePlus 5T). Though bear in mind if they're doing the whole full screen with notch thing, that doesn't necessarily mean that the external dimensions will change. So for that, we'll just have to wait and see.
If you could have the dimensions any way you wanted them though, what would you ideally be hoping they would be?

Yeah, I hope they don't get too much bigger either, I think plus sized smartphones are already slightly larger than the ideal size for carrying anyway. And if they go any bigger, they might as well be full blown tablets. But smartphones with a big enough screen whilst still being able to carry them in a jeans pocket comfortably without it bulging to the extent where it either digs in or just looks like I'm just pleased to see ya, is ideally the way I prefer them to be.
