[Q] N00b to XOOM moding - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm new to modding my Motorola XOOM. I've looked around on the boards and found nothing on the how to's for the XOOM especially since there are so many variants. I currently have a MZ601 and am in Malaysia - I bought it here. I keep seeing MZ601 umts-everest, But I don't know if that is my device.
I'm wondering is there any easy way to unlock and root the XOOM and what are some good ROMs. I've read about TeamEOS and AOKP.
Thanks heaps.

Thanks gucio1200. Do you know how to root? I have looked around but haven't found one that I understand.

Easiest method after you unlock your bootloader.

Does it work with MZ601 Everest?

I read through the post. I still don't understand how to unlock and root. How do I access the SDK?

Google man.

I did. It's all for the wingray and stingray models. And the everest models redirect to xda.

Here is the android SDK download:
http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r21.0.1-windows.exe

Thanks. I've already installed it. All I do is use the command prompt then? Just type in the commands?

The link that d3athsd00r posted basically walks you thru the whole process... if you still can't figure it out after reading that thread then maybe you should leave your xoom stock. No offense intended but it doesn't get any easier than that.

It looked a bit complicated to me initially but was spurred on by a friend who had done it and saw the benefit. Just take a deep breath, print out the instructions and make sure you download all the required files for your device. Read the instructions carefully and follow exactly. It was a lot easier than I feared and now have the device that I want. Good luck

Thanks. I'm going to find out about backing up my data. Right now I have an app which I have done microtransactions that I wanna make sure stays with all the data

There is no working one click method for rooting the Xoom, but if you can follow instructions and take the time and care to prepare, you can do it pretty easily. For everything you probably need, go to the Xoom Heaven thread in General: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209341
And in particular, you could use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Take your time and don't worry too much...the Xoom is very hard to brick. Print the instructions.
Practice booting into recovery and using the volume buttons for navigation.
Good luck!
THANK YOU!

I can vouch for okantomi, he helped me through rooting my Xoom. I was pretty hesitant to take the plunge, but if you take your time and follow guides letter for letter you should not have a problem. There are lots of people willing to help out if you do run into issues.
Enjoy
this is hard, i rooted my htc evo 4g. i think this is a little harder. to scard to mess my xoom. what ever happen to the one click root?

The hardest part is actually setting up your pc for adb. Once you have downloaded all of the drivers, and the android sdk and the java jdk, etc...and make sure you have your fastboot and CWM recovery image files in your platform tools (or tools) folder, you just need to connect your Xoom and follow the steps. Don't worry, you'll get it.
On edit: you could try the much quicker adb setup linked to in this post. Please note that I haven't tried it myself.

Really OP, as long as you follow directions and know a bit about computers, you'll have *zero* problems. It feels so good to successfully root a device for the first time, too. Totally worth it, promise.

New to Xoom have questions, recovery , ROMs

So I the tittle says it all i am getting my xoom today from work it will be a wifi only 32 gig US version of the zoom. My biggest questions are what is the best guide for rooting and flashing recovery i found these two: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22276224#post22276224, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979 which one of those is best for my device and also is there another i should be using???( provide link if possible ) Also what is your favorite ROM i pretty much know what ones i want to try also whats your favorite kernel?? And anything else i should know about the devise i am looking forward to joining the xoom xda community,
That guide to rooting should do the trick for you. The hardest part is setting up ADB and fast boot, but really that isn't very difficult. Just make sure to type things correctly when using the command prompt! Haha. Also, that recovery by Solarnz works just fine, but I use the Team Rogue recovery. And I don't know if you've figured it out on your own, but no ROM for the Xoom is worth flashing unless it's ICS. But! you did say it was a work Xoom, and I don't know how much "legal" freedom you're going to be allowed.
Team EOS ROM v 1 and Steady Hawkins CM9 Kang both ran great on my Xoom (4G). You getting to the Xoom party just as its getting good. Honeycomb vs. ICS is a night and day difference.

Fastboot and the like are pretty easy/simple to use after a while, especially if you're familiar with the command line/prompt.
Basically the procedure is:
1. Unlock Device
2. Root and install recovery (I like to do this from fastboot as well)
3. Flash ROM then GApps
4. Reconfigure home screens and accounts for the eleventy billionth time.
5.?????
6. Profit! (sorry. I had to)

I don't think there is a single guide that encompasses all that, but that rooting guide you found is a good start. Each sub part should have install instructions in the OP of each respective thread.

I followed those instructions and were able to unlock the bootloader and root my Xoom WiFi without any issues, and I'm a dork at rooting. I will especially recommend installing the alternative ADB setup which is mentioned in step 2.3.

HTC inspire 4G AT&T rooting

HI,
I recently took this phone from my frend who brought this from US.
It unlocked to any carrier. I have read couple of places about S-Off.
Not sure what it is all about. Before rooting & installing custom ROM I need help from the folks who have done this. There is no removery mod installed on this phone. I dont want to brick this piece hence need rooting instructions from the folks.
Regards
S-on? Then use this.

Hi Nick,
I did read it couple of places but wanted to keep myself on the safer side. I know folks on xda provide real help in getting this done. This was the reason I floated my question on Inspire 4G Q&A. I had already visited Teichopsia link before.

In truth, we can't make the instructions any simpler than the step by step that was already beautifully done by attn1. If you read it and still don't understand, keep reading it until it makes sense and read the effin manual included with the hack kit. While rooting, if anything goes wrong, follow the manual and don't make any assumptions or redo anything.

Darunion said beautifully....the only thing that I can add up is that the Hack Kit is the only game in town. DO NOT try anything else or might end up with a messed bootloader. Read as many times as necessary and then go ahead...if you get stuck do not stop or close anything, just re read the manualĀ“s troubleshooting section and if are still stuck hit the IRC channel...but do not stop or atempt anything....welcome to XDA...:good:
I used Ace Hack Kit. It was actually surprisingly easy and didn't take that long.

Ok considering your situation you should root it. The process is very simple. It's a one click root.

Here's a video to help: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...m6DWCA&usg=AFQjCNEDETg2nq8rDBQWfKvlh9APF40fiw
It will root, unlock, install clockwork mod recovery, and superuser.
After that flash a rom. I will say I use the Rom called "Android Revolution HD 6.3.1" and can hotspot when ever I want, even without the AT&T account.
Video for that is here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...4dTCCA&usg=AFQjCNE6rGAT6Z8pN9omO8UshYbzAup5cQ
As always I take no responsibility if you brick your device, or if you damage your device in anyway. Hope I helped.

Looked all around just simple instructions to ROOT 4.1.2 Wifi Xoom

Hello to all
I have a Xoom from the day they came out. Cost a penny then but I thought it was great....not a iPad.
Anyway the Xoom is at it's EOL. OK, but I can still make it work good mounted in my truck (they are rugged).
I have the simple Wifi Xoom with 4.1.2 now.
I have read and read thru this site and others and it seems like it would be simple BUT some of us are not developers/programmers.
I have tried to make sense of it (why can't there just a 'One Click' root?
I need basic, simple instructions on how to root this.
Do I download the STOCK image and then what? Use CWM ok, but where do I get that? How do I put it on the Xoom?
etc,etc,etc......
So any help to get the instructions (and forget that someone is not going to ADB shell fastboot this and command line that) in a SIMPLE form for those of us who can do somethings (I can use Odin and reflashed the ICS back onto my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 because I did NOT like the JB OTA,also rooted my Galaxy S3 (metroPCS) by following simple online instructions/tools) so I am not a complete dumba$$.
But the way this is all laid out, it is confusing to me.
So can someone help?
Thanks
And my Xoom (I am sure like others) is completely stock, gotta all the OTAs and is at JB 4.1.2 MZ604 JZO54K whatever........
Again
Thank you
philmiami

Careful, unlocking the bootloader will format and reset your xoom to zero !!!
Btw, you can use twrp as recovery as well. Download latest version here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28988754
