HTC inspire 4G AT&T rooting - HTC Inspire 4G

HI,
I recently took this phone from my frend who brought this from US.
It unlocked to any carrier. I have read couple of places about S-Off.
Not sure what it is all about. Before rooting & installing custom ROM I need help from the folks who have done this. There is no removery mod installed on this phone. I dont want to brick this piece hence need rooting instructions from the folks.
Regards

S-on? Then use this.

Hi Nick,
I did read it couple of places but wanted to keep myself on the safer side. I know folks on xda provide real help in getting this done. This was the reason I floated my question on Inspire 4G Q&A. I had already visited Teichopsia link before.

In truth, we can't make the instructions any simpler than the step by step that was already beautifully done by attn1. If you read it and still don't understand, keep reading it until it makes sense and read the effin manual included with the hack kit. While rooting, if anything goes wrong, follow the manual and don't make any assumptions or redo anything.

Darunion said beautifully....the only thing that I can add up is that the Hack Kit is the only game in town. DO NOT try anything else or might end up with a messed bootloader. Read as many times as necessary and then go ahead...if you get stuck do not stop or close anything, just re read the manual´s troubleshooting section and if are still stuck hit the IRC channel...but do not stop or atempt anything....welcome to XDA...:good:

I used Ace Hack Kit. It was actually surprisingly easy and didn't take that long.

Here's a video to help: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...m6DWCA&usg=AFQjCNEDETg2nq8rDBQWfKvlh9APF40fiw
It will root, unlock, install clockwork mod recovery, and superuser.
After that flash a rom. I will say I use the Rom called "Android Revolution HD 6.3.1" and can hotspot when ever I want, even without the AT&T account.
Video for that is here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...4dTCCA&usg=AFQjCNE6rGAT6Z8pN9omO8UshYbzAup5cQ

Please if its been posted, tell me where and ill read it but a quick search revealed nothing. I just picked up my inspire and when I check for HTC update it shows there is one. Do I need to update before rooting? Also what changes are there as far as any major steps to flashing a Rom. Like if I want inspired ace can I just root, flash recovery and install Rom? Or does the bootloaders need to be flashed before flashing a gingerbread Rom? Sorry for the 838393 million questions but I'm a long time Samsung user lol,I know my way around rooting and flashing but I know HTC phones can be a little different

anyway, like he said do that .. as far as the update first or not:
you can flash whatever radio you want after you are done rooting; for me i rooted before the OTA, but for wifey we did the update first.. it doesn't matter, as the info will be destroyed during the root anyway.
you cannot OTA after root from what i gather, as i was never offered the update as i was rooted

Lol sorry for putting it like that. It's just sometimes someones question sounds like one that's been answered already, but they mean it in a different specific way. Here lately people have been a little rude about the whole "its been answered" but really I just have a hard time explaining exactly what I mean in text. I don't mind reading the stickies but sometimes it gets confusing if you are new to a device and don't know what stage the development is at lol. But thanks man,ill go read the stickies and if I have any problems ill just post back here lol. Appreciate the kind answer

Well don't take it to harshly most are just sarcastic. I mean I am just sarcastic.
What doesn't help is when you can't truly tell for sure if its a playful sarcasm or mean sarcasm. It sometimes is hard to tell considering we are talking to each other in text form. There have been some posts I've read, not by you, but others, that I couldnt particularly tell if they were being mean or just being a smart @ss just to mess with someone without offending. I just wanna say something to the ones who have meant there sarcasm in a mean way. My wife's cousin coined these 2 phrases, and I like using them a lot. "Can't we all just smoke a bong!" And, "Life's a ***** and then you die, f*** the world let's get high!" Lmao ;D

My favorite method is to apply the OTA and then use Gingerbreak. Chainfire is a fantastic developer and I used gingerbreak to install rom manager, flash CWM, and get your flashing on.

Oh Thanks !! Well, I know the root process is the fact that being gaining admin access within the device, in order to make any kind of changes at the kernel level or anything else right ?
Now, my device is unlocked, that necessary means it's also rooted ?

Oh Thanks! and Yeah, that was the first post I'd read when I came into this cool website... The thing is, the guide is amazing, and those two ways to root the device seems great !! it's just that, what else after that ? I'm talking about being upgrading to Gingerbread, let's think the bases are ready (rooted, flashed, unlocked..) so then what ? should I download something and use some king of soft to upgrade my Inspire ? You know, I know all about Iphone and the way to jailbreak and unlock and upgraded and so on, but NOTHING about android.. as I said, I'm just starting.. Thanks a lot for all the advises... And SORRY for being posting this on the wrong thread!

Upon reading it, did you miss the part about flashing a rom? Since you want Gingerbread you will need to instal one. Hence the how to instal a rom portion.
The Inspire forums have many subforums. one of them is the dev forum. This would be your next reading material. But I suggest you read the guide again. Good luck.
Oh.. I got it !! The flashing process is basically the installation of a "firmware" into the phone, which would be in this case a gingerbread.
Thanks !

Though there obviously hasn't been an official inspire gingerbread release, what you'll find in the dev section has been modified as required from the gingerbread release for the desire hd, pretty much the same phone.

Newcomers please read me, a helpful little guide

While I'm seeing an influx of new comers to the MyTouch4G section, most likely due to newer phones coming out and picking these up cheap.
I'd like to remind you of a couple of things prior to just jumping in and rooting your phone.
Disclaimer: i am not a mod or an admin, just a humble "helper outer"
First Things First.Rooting one's phone is not to be taken lightly. When you root your phone to are basically giving your self SU access to the /system files of your phone. While this allows for GREAT expansion of the devices capabilities, you need to under stand that it can also brick your device in a heart beat. I know a guy who lives in St.Louis who said all he did was flash a custom font, via an application, on his rooted droid 2 and it bricked. You need to read, and understand what you are getting into. Because when the rubber meets the road you are the only one who can save your phone.
Secondly and just as important as anything else else.please install the ADB drivers at a minimum. TrueBlue_Drew has put together a very simple walk-through with video for this http://bit.ly/q7MP9t. Please take the time to learn the basic commands and what they do.
Third, and this can prevent some headaches down the roadplease go and check which eMMC chipset you have. Our phones where made in two different places, and have two different Chip set serial numbers. One of them is problematic and one of them is pretty safe. Please take time to verify which chipset you have prior to flashing anything. And yes it can be done without root access [http://bit.ly/y2zmdr]. Please see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Fourth, and this is where the rubbers meets the road. A)
You need to decide which root method is for you. There are two different proven methods out there. One is known as the root.sh method. This is the simplest method. the long and short of it is this. You download a packet, extract a folder to your SD Cards root directory. Then you download, install and run a program called VISIONary. after you do that you enter a simple command or two to run the script in the extracted folder. you can find that method here root.sh method now this method will work to turn your phone into a rooted s-off phone. and is super easy i used this method to root my phone with s-off before i even left the T-Mobile store when i bought the devices. However it only turns off the security flags. IF you flash the PD15IMG to return to a stock fashion it will remove all SU rights.
B)
the second method is a bit more entailed but completely removes the security flags. IT's called ./gfree method. Now you need to be careful because this will root a phone with a bad eMMC chipset. Meaning it will be easier for you to brick your device. If that happens you own a 200-500 USD paper weight. And as of currently there is no sure fire way to recover from it. you can find more on that method here ./gfree rooting method.
c)
ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE STOCK 2.3.4 (GINGERBREAD) ROM
you must downgrade to 2.2.1 before you can root your phone.
Please see this link http://bit.ly/rugejM.
d)
if you do not know what you are doing i would advise against the OneClickRoot for rooting ANY phone. It's a simple path to enable someone with no knowledge to root their device.
We are glad you have chosen to make XDA your source for all of your hacker needs. But please take some time and read and study prior to doing anything. We'd hate to see you root and brick your phone because you over looked something.
the Q&A section is used for just that Questions and Answers
the Accessory section is for just that Accessories devoted to the HTC Glacier
the Development Section is just that a section where you can find ROMS, Kernels, hacker, and PC/Mac/Linux guides
the App section is just that a place for us to talk about add ons and applications
everything else falls under the general section.
hope you enjoy your stay here.
Finally, and i wanted to post this separately
please do not be afraid of the search button or Google. Chances are if you've encountered a problem, or have a question. Someone has already asked it, or solved it.
Please watch this

If it does go bad there is good chance you can exchange it just don't tell them anything about you rooted the phone. I sent my phone in rooted with S off with a different problem and had no problem getting an exchange now I have this 2.3.4 which is not too bad but still figuring out the downgrade process I miss all the privileges with being rooted.

Great guide! It helped me with several questions I had, I was even able to check if I had a bad eMMC, I'm lucky I have the good one \o/
My phone came with 2.3.4, I really want to root to remove all the junk that comes preinstalled.
I have a question, if I used the root.sh method (which seems the safest), after downgrading of course. If I flash a rooted stock 2.3.4 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264704
Would I loose my S-OFF? Also to install the ClockworkMod recovery, is it the same way as other phones? ex can I just install it using the ROM manager?
Also is it really necessary to flash the engineering bootloader?
thanks for this great tutorial!

Once you have s-off, you will keep s-off until you manually turn it to s-on. So to answer your question.
No if you flash the rooted 2.3.4 of the stock OS you will keep s-off.
Yes you can flash it via the recovery image, without any problems. Just make sure to do a back up first.
It's not really needed, but encouraged as you can flash specific sections of the OS, or recovery image if needed.
Thank you very much for your help!
Everything went smoothly, now I'm in 2.3.4 rooted with bloat and ad free ^_^
The root.sh method didn't work for me though, but gfree worked like a charm (was kind of scared using it, but since I already checked my eMMC was good, I went ahead and worked perfectly!)

[Q] What are the steps to install custom ROMs in this phone?

Hello all, I've been tweaking with my Xperia Arc and Samsung Galaxy S2 for 3 months now, but a friend of mine asked me to install a new ROM to his Inspire.
It's currently on stock. I found a nice ROM thread and read that it needed the "Radio S-Off" and I don't understand what that means.
I know I'll be able to flash the cwm, and unlock the bootloader (hopefully) but that one kept me guessing. Thanks in advance!
The steps are: Root the phone. Install Recovery. Flash custom ROM.
If you don't know what that means or how to do either of those steps, you shouldn't be messing with the phone at this point. All the information you need is already available in these threads. Do your research.
Research!! Each ROM thread the developer shows you how to flash them. There are also specific threads that teach you how in development section. Do not attempt anything with your buddies phone if you don't know what your doing or you may end up buying him a new phone.
Research and study!!!Reasearch and study!!! I myself searched and searched for weeks before I attempted anything on my phone.

You don't need to. It will work on windows as well.
I would strongly suggest to read the whole manual (effen manual - it's actually named like that) before starting. If you downloaded the hack kit/ran the kit with your antivirus on, the chances of it not working are high.
Thus, read before starting anything. Because if you mess up (the hack kit is quite simple if you understand what you are doing) but if you mess up with something so easy, it's going to take a whole lot more to fix it. READ EVERYTHING IN THE SITE BEFORE YOU PLUG IN YOUR PHONE, THEN READ IT AGAIN. WE ARE NOT KIDDING ABOUT READING. IT IS YOUR PHONE, YOUR RESPONSABILITY.
Keep in mind what android version you are on. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Yes, it does.. i have 2.3.5 and it runs on 3.20.502.52
Make sure that when you run aahk the you shut down any firewall and anti virus programs or you will run into issues. Some people been having issues where anti virus programs treat aahk as a virus and will stop it from working. Last thing you want is in the middle of rooting for aahk to stop working.

Couldn't sleep.
Well, read buddy. Cause everything you gotta do is just that to understand. After you have read (several times) how to proceed, and if you feel confident then go ahead.
I'll pop quiz you to make sure you have.

Ok, my humble advice is that you spend MUCH more time reading before running the Hack Kit. This is not like other phones that the process is painless. Unfortunately, HTC locks its bootloaders so you need S-OFF before anything else.
If you really can't find something in a web site that has 2 or 3 entries, then take time to think about rooting. Don't do it untill you get acquainted with all the information you are being given.
Rooting your build OS is not enterily for noobs, so or you get help via teamviewer or just take some more time to fully understand what you are about to do...

I know, Im just too confused with all the terms, S-off, bootloaders, RUU.. I think I do need to search more and wait till I totally know what is to be done, Else I'll mess up my phone surely!
I think I should wait, and stay with whatever I have. I needed ICS. But I'll wait!
One ques., the most confusing thin is that "No temproot for Inspire for 3.20.502.52" which is written on the site of aahk, means what? Inspire can't be rooted which have this? Coz i have the same one.!
But anyways, thanks guys for taking time out! I do need some learning to be done.
If possible could u plz put up some youtube videos to help beginners like me, so that they can make full use of their phones! Or post link here if u know any video that might help me.
I need the ICS! It would be really heplful!
But thanks guys, you have been great help trying to explain! I'll continue my search! I'll wait and will keep in touch here.
Thanks alot!
