[Q] Updating OTA on clockwork? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a note 10.1 8010 with clock work recovery installed. I just went to install the new ota update but when i clicked install and it restarted, it went to the clockwork recovery screen and said that it could not verify the whole signature so it aborted.
I bought the tablet second hand and while it has clockwork on, it doesn't appear to have cyanogen or anything else. I'm a bit confused as to how I now update to the latest firmware so that I can get the new premium suite features. I've rooted devices before and have heard conflicting reports as to whether ota updates will kill my root.
Attached is my system summary, please could someone direct me as to the best route to take? Thank you in advance!

You will need to get the stock recovery or wait on a cwm flashable rom.

I would suggest download the UK rom which is complete flash it using Odin and you should be fine
I do not advice installing OTA using CWM as it is a very complicated process

Thanks for your replies guys. Unfortunately this is complicated further because I only have access to a stupid Mac at the moment so I cant use Odin. Is there any other way round it or do i just have to hang on for a CWM version?

You could try mobile odin.

Not bricked but not working.

OK all...so I am new here and was trying to get JB to work on my tablet. I thought I had done the needed research but went wrong somewhere I guess. I tried to follow steps on a site I found from AndroidAuthority dot com (not sure if I am able to post the entire link or no?). I was trying to root and install ClockworkMod Recovery but I guess either something went wrong or I messed something up. From what I have been reading I guess I have not bricked my device since it still tries to load. It currently loops with the Samsung screen. I can still enter the download mode and recovery mode but not sure what I should try next. I tried via Odin again with no luck. Out of the box I was running 4.0.3 but did the OTA update to 4.0.4. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks from a newbie!
Also I used espresso_recovery.tar.md5 as the recovery image if that helps at all. Thanks again.
Followed the steps from another site. Will follow these later today:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788625
I guess since I can still use Odin I should be all set. Sorry if this was in the wrong section.

You can use heimdale too. Ive had better luck using that for my phone, never tried my tabley but it should work.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
I haven't tried heimdale yet cause I do not want to add more gas to the flames. But I tried the other link I posted and still no luck. Also tried a different SD card to be on the safe side but no luck. Any ideas on what I should do next? Or any other info I can provide that might help?
Keep on trying... it should work sooner or later. Have the samsung drivers? If not install kies. Try other usb ports too.
Sent either from my p113 (gtab 2 7.0) or i997 (Infuse)

Should I keep on with the same procedure or you mean keep letting it boot in a cycle?
I used this with 4.0.4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1657056
i would suggest you follow from the beginning.
install samsung drivers and kies and odin. run odin as adminstrator.
pay close attention to the mention of the post #325 in the instruction as it what helps you 4.0.4 root process. its difference from 4.0.3.
also if you are on jb. you need to run cwm 6.0 not 5.0 make sure youre uploading the right file into odin.

btw youre not bricked don't stress, youll sort it out soon enough

Followed all the steps in section B and I am still stuck in a boot loop. Any idea?
Then use the restore to stock procedure. But before you do, tell me: what step did you boot loop on?
Haven't been able to work on this again. I will try and get some time and get back to you. Thanks again for the help.

Don't use ClockWorkmod, it's not designed specifically for Gtab2... CWM is bad.
you can try flash your gtab2 with ODIN instead
CWM is OFFICIALLY supported now and works good.
Don't fear.

So I'm new here, I tried rooting my p3100, flashed cwm with Odin, as it rebooted from there it just keeps rebooting - need help please guys......any lil bit of advice would help - I've read on other posts to flash to the stock ROM, but how do i do this? where do i get the rom......
OK so I am back at it and still not having much luck. I can't get as far as the:
"CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.0"
Screen.
From here I do not have a recovery file to use. Which should I use for the P3113....At this point I don't even care if I lose all the data on the tablet and go back to stock. Just need it working again and then do some more research on how to do it right..
Thanks again.
Then use Section E of my guide. It will wipe your data and restore your tablet to stock.

[Q] New Member of the Club, now Rooting but not flashing

Hi guys since today im a proud owner of a Galaxy Note 10.1 N8000 stock 4.1.2, but now comes the question, is it possible to Root it without flashing anything?
I only need root access to install a few apps, FolderMount, Titanium, Root explorer, etc.
I own too a Galaxy S2 that I rooted by the method of "rooting without flashing unsecure kernel" is it possible to apply the same method to the Note 10.1?
THANKS for any help given.

Welcome to the club. Take a look at all the sections for the tablet and make sure you read the stickies too.
Method #2 and youl be good to go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
I had already read that stickie and if I have correctly read, Method 2 (and the others) involves Odin and flashing something and that is what I dont want.
Isnt there a way to root without flashing?

Let me ask you this, why no flashing? As far as I know it's either Odin or flash. You need to get a custom recovery on it in order to root.
---------- Post added at 05:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:30 PM ----------
Also with the s2 the recovery and kernel are in one. This is not.
Thanks for your help and time spent helping me, but I think I will pass the root on the Note, I thought there was a more easier/safe method like that on the S2.
Thanks

There was an Exynos exploit method but Samsung patched the security hole a few updates ago.
The method in the link that was posted does alter your flash count and that can be correct but you are the owner of the device and if you are not comfortable flashing you tablet I wouldn't.
I have flashed mine and tried a few rom's but I always ended up resetting my flash counter and going back to stock.
Folder mount works great and that was the reason I rooted in the first place but you can store your files on the ext drive and transfer them back and forth manually but I found with my fast wifi I'm better off re-downloading the data along with "Helium - App Sync and Backup" to backup and restore my data and you do not need root, only draw back is that you have to have a computer connection for backup and restore to work.
.
Yes, its just a matter of not feeling confortable, and there is also the risk of blocking the camera. (had a similar issue with 4.1.2 on S2 needed to downgrade to 4.0.4).
But it seeems to me a bit odd that to grant root access we need to flash the rom.
I don't think you read that right. You're not flashing a ROM, just a custom recovery through ODIN, then a root app. It's actually very simple. (Any simpler and I would be concerned about rogue app exploits)
Fyi: I'm also new to Samsung devices and bought my tablet this week. Rooted it this morning by following the stickies, but sticking with the stock ROM for now. I'm more than happy with the tablet so far.

There is no flashing a rom with method 2. You Odin the custom recovery then you have to flash the superuser into the system. You need superuser to get root and Odin is the easiest way.
Trust me we have all been in your shoes about being nervous, I've been doing this a long time and this method is really easy.
You can also use this method - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957002
It does require ODIN but as has been stated this is the norm. You are not replacing any kernels or flashing another rom, you are just adding the root components. Using this method also leaves stock recovery intact...
If you woory about flash counter then run triangleaway after to reset the flash counter and recoveries....
I found doing this, doing a factory reset from settings then reflashing the Stock rom using Mobile ODIN pro gave me a stock standard, but rooted, rom with all statuses "Official" and 0 flash count....
A lot of work I know but then worthwhile things generally require it...
Ok, I followed the Method 2 made everything like on video, after pressing Power+Volume Up, I entered on STOCK Recovery, not the CWM,even so, I apply the .zip and I get:
MANUAL MODE
--Appling Multi-CSC....
Applied the CSC-code:LUX
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
--Install /sdcard....
Finding update package....
Opening update package....
Verifying update package.....
E:FAILED TO VERIFY WHOLE-FILE SIGNATURE
E:FAILED TO VERIFY WHOLE-FILE SIGNATURE
E:signature verification failed
I also retryed and turned off auto-reboot in Odin before starting the process but I get the same thing, now what should I do?
Its not rootable?
Ok, Its finally rooted, What I had to do,
On Odin unthick auto-reboot, When Odin finished doing its thing, dont shutdown the Tablet but press Power+Volume Up and go directly to CWM recovery and there follow the rest of instructions.
Thanks to everybody that took time to help me, thats why I love this forum.
A BIG THANK YOU.

I see that I'm probably too late now to answer the OP.
But maybe others can be interested.
I find that the easiest way to root (without odin and without installing a custom recovery) is Framaroot.
It uses some Exynos exploits, and has been also recently updated by the developer to counteract Samsung's patches.
It may work or it may not work on some devices and with some of the more recent firmware.
In any case giving it a try doesn't cost anything. It's just an app.
If it works the app can also be used to temporarily remove the root.
For me it worked with Firmware N8000XXCLL3 and I know that it works with some more recent fw too.
Furthermore it doesn't change the counter and even the Devices Status remains "Official". Well, actually the devices status may change to "Custom" after few days with the tablet on, but it returns Official after a simple reboot.

Installed TWRP on StraightTalk SCH-S968C Samsung Galaxy S III - now no OS! - resolved

I have a rooted StraightTalk SCH-S968C Samsung Galaxy S III (with the stock AOSP ROM) that I just screwed up. I had used EZ-Recovery to flash TWRP 2.2.0 to the phone. Now TWRP says there is no OS! I can only boot into TWRP - nothing else. It won't even let me power-down the phone. Is there some way I can recover from this, or do I now have a very expensive electronic brick (that runs TWRP)? I have adb installed on my laptop and I know it works, so that's one possible route to recovery. Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm pretty sure it's possible to return it completely to stock with the COMBINATION_S968CUDUAMH1_S968CTFNAMH1_1304014_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5 file through Odin. I just to happen to have the file right here.. small warning though, it's 1.2 gigs.

That's the file I am offering to host on my Website, since nobody seems to be able to download it from Dropbox. I'm having trouble downloading it from Mega... Since the file is over 1 GB, Mega insisted I needed to download their extension, but it's not compatible with Firefox 22. I tried Chrome, and Mega says that Chrome on my laptop is "a bit outdated"... sheesh! I'll try and update it.
(added later) - I found a Dropbox link for the file and it's downloading now.
If you want to FTP the file to my Website, let me know by PM and I'll give you the username and password.
I tried using fastboot to install CWM Recovery, but fastboot is eternally "waiting for device" even though it's there (adb can see it).
Aug. 7 - Got the file I needed, but didn't use it since Windows7 would not recognize the phone even after I installed the drivers. (I think it was an issue with automatic updates being disabled...) In the meantime... I tried the button-combo for the bootloader (which I swore I tried the day before and it didn't work), and the phone booted into the bootloader! From there, I pressed "Volume down" to cancel & reboot the phone, and it went into the stock system - it was all still there! First thing I did was immediately use EZ-Recovery to flash CWM 5.8.4.5. - Issue resolved!

Modem drivers are jacked up. I want what I have now with WiFi in tact and custom recovery. Just wanted to get the word in in case I hit a wall with recovery as I am now before the flash to stock. Thanks in advance for any help. Sorry for the ramble

Does anyone have a good link for h1 stock. All the links I can find including aa51 are dead. I need to go stock to fix the modem. I can handle everything from there I just need stock and I've trolled XDA , aa51, and several others. All links are dead. Probably for a long long time . any help is greatly appreciated

[Q] Just Rooted Stock Lollipop... What Apps to Freeze / Delete?

So, fellow campers....
I gingerly rooted my Tablet, saying goodbye to any hope of Samsung's help should something happen in the future... but also freeing myself from all sorts of bloatware. At least, I hope that's the case. I'm backing up the unexpurgated version of Lollipop right now via TWRP to my micro-sd card. Then I can go in and muck about to my heart's content.
What -- besides KNOX -- would you get rid of / have you gotten rid of? I may come back to this post to add a list of what I freeze via Titanium Pro or even remove. But all additions welcome.
Can you tell me how you rooted it? I did not have success beyond installing TRWP:
Wifi note 12.2, installed the OTA 5.0 update. Then I tried to root following the instructions here in the forum.
When I tried to run supersu.zip from the sdcard it stopped with an error.
Any help is appreciated. And yes, I used the search

You flash the SuperSU.zip in TWRP.

I used Odin to flash a file - CF-Auto-Root-v1awifi-v1awifixx-smp900 - and that pretty much made rooting painless. Once I'd done that, I used Odin again to flash TWRP (latest one, 2.8.7 something).
I believe there's a thread in this forum somewhere with pointers how to do all that. I used this, I think... it has links to the Odin and CF-Auto-Root files you will need. Again, I'm just a journeyman, so proceed with care. The thread says kitkat but it seemed okay w/ Lollipop as well, for me anyway.

I'd actually downloaded an early copy of the 5.02 update, but my tab downloaded the USA release... so I went with that instead.
Let me know how it goes!
Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 - w/ New Lollipop!
Samsung Galaxy Note II - Oct L Custom Rom
(My wife's geek for her Asus TF700 w/ ZombiPop)
(My wife's geek for her Samsung Galaxy Note 3)
Retired yet still functional: Asus TF101 w/ Timduru Katkiss Pop
Thanks a million Shonkin

I've never run into that with stock recovery but I had that issue with clockworkmod a long time ago.
You might verify you have the correct update zip for your tablet.
Usually that error comes from the tag in the updater script being for another model.
It could also be that the zip you have isn't official and needs to be installed from non stock recovery.
If you are full stock anyways I would recommend just using the Samsung switch software to run the update instead (unless you have a reason to install a version below the latest.)
i tried installing switch and it errors saying something about side by side configuration is incorrect im on windows 7 64

Looks like the same issue found here: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Tablets/Smart-Switch-won-t-start-side-by-side-configuration-problem/td-p/50275
According to that post you need to find and install the following:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
Sorry about that, it just straight worked for me when I used it last. Hopefully this helps.
is there root for 5.1.1?
got kies running but i wont go 5.1.1 unless i can keep root
kies says my device not supported? is that because i debloated it?

I think that depends what model you have.
I'm on the Verizon P905V model so for me there is no root for 5.1.1 and the bootloader is locked so I dont have custom recovery.
if you have a model that allows custom recovery as indicated in your first post you would be better off flashing a custom rom if one is available.

quick question, i have the same verizon model p905v and been putting off updating, currently on 4.4.2, i used to have root, but no longer b/c i took an update by accident.
my main thing is the multi-window apps drawer, can you still add apps to that drawer that aren't "officially" supported for multi-window? i use this function almost 100% of the time i'm using the tablet since i use it in my car as GPS/podcast/music player. i use this app currently to help with that: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xpe.app.multiwindow.commander
when i open the app, it says i don't have root, but the app still lets me add apps the the multiwindow apps drawer that weren't there by default.
is there any way you can test this out or if someone else can chime in on that, i'd appreciate that.
I tried the app you posted but without root it doesn't seem to work .
It let's you make the changes within the app but they revert when you reboot, and you have to reboot for them to go through.
