So I grabbed one of those bluetooth controllers for my TB to goof around with some classic snes/genesis roms. Unfortunately the market is flooded with various versions, half of which appear to be ripoff's of each other (obviously stolen gui's and menu hierarchies). I remember a long time ago when this was a problem. Some author would release a true to form emulator, then get plagiarized by knock-off brands trying to sell their work on the market and make a quick buck, sometimes even with bundled spyware. So I've tried a few different emu's and most of them seem to have some lag issues. I look them up to see they were last updated in 2010, or 2011 or something along those lines.
So I'm wondering if anybody has any recommendations for good emu's that run great on the TB. We're talking 100% perfect framerate, just like the snes. Perhaps this isnt even possible given the TB's limited horsepower, but hopefully it is. It also wouldnt hurt to post any emu's to avoid, so I dont start getting notification spam and junk like that.
Pretty sure THIS is the best free one for SNES out there.
Someone else may have a better suggestion, but I think this one is hard to beat for free.
Snes9x or gsnes. I have tried almost every single one on the market and both of those have been better. They all have little quirks that make them a little off. Snes9x was the very best snes emulator for pc and the same developer made the Android version.

I use the oids. Snesoid, nesoid, etc. Last time I checked you can get them free on the slideme market. 64oid you still have to pay for.
Emulation: my personal solution to all the "angry birds" games that flood the market.
Enjoy sir.
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
Indeed, I have tested every emulator I could find for the Thunderbolt and the 'oid series seem to do best overall.
I've tried them all and snes 9x is the best IMO. it's available on the dev's site...

Will this mean anything for performance?
well i don't see why not. game developers should benefit from this too
Let's wait for the dev's to implement this
This should mean a performance improvement but I would not hold my breathe as to a huge improvement.
I dont really mind as I dont think a phone should be a games console.

It's not a PSP, but a game once in a while doesn't hurt. This driver might open up some options for UIs as well and/or make them respond faster.
Open Source Kernel Driver, but Closed Source User Space Driver.
Won't help us much as much as we would like, unfortunately. Hope they'll release it fully so we all can make the best use of it.
Dave @ DRI-dev has had enough with these closed sources already :/
Just love what he's responding with:
"This is a can of worms I'd rather not enter into......"
"So you've upstreamed the kernel bits, kept the good userspace bits to yourselfs, are stroking them on your lap like some sort of Dr Evil......"

I agree with that.
Just a few people on here were wanting Desire to be as good as IPhone 3GS for games when it does everything else better.
People just have to get used to the fact that no matter how good the graphics are it'll never be able to play games. For instance I had a game the other day which had a virtual joystick on the left and buttons on the right. Graphics were very good but sometimes lagged. But problem was when you had to run and jump, u couldn't because u can only press one button at a time. Which in my eyes is the worst flaw for the desire. How can a phone at this price in this day and age not support multitouch. What a con.
Other than that I'm happy with everything else but this is a big letdown to me and I'm sure many others.

The Desire can happily track 2 touch points at any one time.
Games will see a vast improvement in quality once Froyo and Air based games arrive.
Just look at the game Angry Bird's, Best seller on iPhone & iPad and due to arrive on Android soon, you can see it on a Droid/Milestone here: http://www.rovio.com/index.php?mact=Blogs,cntnt01,showentry,0&cntnt01entryid=24&cntnt01returnid=58

In theory yes it should track 2 touches but it doesn't. Trust me I've tried all sorts of games and emulators and it won't let you press more than one button at once. Try it you'll see. No updates will fix this as far as I'm aware its a hardware problem(cheap touchscreen).

I did, I wrote my own app to test max touch points available (in Air 2.5) had it tracking 2 points no problem, on both 2.1 & 2.2.

Yes I know about that app but like I said u try playing a game that supports multitouch and it doesn't work properly on the desire. For instance, assassins creed from gameloft had a lot of running and jumping and certain parts u need to do both at the same time yet its not possible which ended up in a lot of deaths and getting a refund. Yet the iPhone doesn't suffer from this. Maybe because it has 11 touch points.
I also hate the way every one says the desire isn't for gaming. Yet its market store has a lot of (incompatible) games. If u remember when the iPhone first came out it couldn't do anything, it didn't even have an appstore at first but now it plays amazing games. So fingers crossed, this problem will be fixed and the desire will catch-up with the games because believe it or not there are a lot of upset desire owners that want good games for the £350 phone.
gameloft are lazy. their android ports from iphone arent clean. i played real soccer on desire and it was poor. after a mazy run you are lucky to pass or score. fifa 10 on desire is a different kettle of fish. multitouch does work but not the best compaired to iphone

it's a software problem, the phone can track two points but will also activate an area between those two points, this is how pinch-to-zoom works.
the solution is to include the area between the two points in the calibration for the buttons, so that you do not inadvertently activate buttons between the two that you want to press.
complicated but not impossible, they just need to properly port them
There's a developer called phhusson over at Modaco in the Acer liquid development. I think he solved the mt problem in his kernel.

It's apparently fixable in the kernel. Cyanogen apparently had a fix but he never released it. Google promised as well to fix the multitouch bug on FroYo for the Nexus but I haven't heard anything else about that.
It would be nice to have the same smoothness as the iPhone, as in on interface parts.
Hi all!
So how is the emulator scene with this thing? I just saw some videos on youtube and was blown away.
I was recently dissapointed that I could not get a HD2 due to the 3g not working with ATT but this Galaxy is WOW...
I am hoping that PS1 emulation and maybe even Commodore Amiga is working

there's a vid in this forum (Captivate general) showing the ps1 emulation of FF7.
I'm not sure about emulator, I WANT TO DOWNLOAD IT, but i'm too lazy ha. Gameboid emulator's creator has fixed the crash so we can use that too. There are around 5? emulators out there so it's WONDERFUL for gaming.
I just switched from a Tilt2 also ... I thought I would miss the keyboard but not missing it at all.
There are several emulators available in the android marketplace, NES, SNES, GENESIS, PS1, XBOX and those are just what I remember. I haven't played with any of them yet, but I do recall that some had issues on the Captivate from reading comments. I wouldn't fret though, this phone is new and with it being seeded (in one form or another) on every carrier on the planet I'm sure issues will be worked out fairly quickly. With the Galaxy S also having a GPU I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Galaxy S specific emulators which take advantage of it.
That phone has me really pumped up...everything I see and read about it seems to be awesome...I may wait a little longer so that more hacks and stuff is out but I think I can upgrade for like $160 so that may be too tempting
I switched from a tilt 2 and will never look back. That thing is a complete piece f crap compared to this. The hardware was OK, but the aging pos windows mobile (even rommed to the Max) sucked.

Ive been playing a ton SNES roms on my Captivate. The emulation on this phone is great.

Gameboy advanced roms here so far, I will be getting an SNES and possibly PS1 emulator when I am not lazy enough. GBA games FLY on this bad boy, especially compared to my old original Tilt.
Guys you are killing me.
BTW, I saw it on the Walmart online cellphone store and according to it , I can get the upgrade for $99...what would be just TOO awesome.
Heck I can probably sell my wife Samsung Eternity and not have to spend much to upgrade then my wife gets my Tilt2 of course...in case I decided to go back to it lol
I was never into it, but I'm sure some of you are. Enjoy.

ooo, been waiting for this. Cheers
I was excited for this but now I'm just mad. 7 dollars for an alpha? Steinkraft for. 99 cents has more features. And updates come daily adding something new mst of the time. I'm just shocked by the price an lack of awesomeness compared to something 6 dollars cheaper and developed bysomeone who hasn't already made a f**k load of money selling people an alpha.

As for someone who has never played minecraft, the price is a bit steep. I've been told that this version lacks many features that made the desktop counter part so great. I tried the free version myself and was impressed at how large the world is. It's very expansive and filled with different terrains.
Aside from that, the controls need work and having an open world where there really is nothing much to do but build can quickly become stagnant. I spent a whole hour building a tunnel going to nowhere and now that I look back, I kinda want it back.
I'll keep my eye on this and purchase at a later date when there is actually something to do.

Lol, that's the whole jist of Minecraft - you do whatever you want!
I haven't tried the mobile version, but from what I heard, this version is really behind the desktop version.

No survival, no mobs, no health - just exploring and building...
If these will be implemented, then it'll be great. Now it is just really a "demo"
It's alpha, and that kind of makes sense for why its so limited. That said, its probably been released for stability testing and to gather bug reports since its new to the platform. I note that the Desktop client for linux requires specifically SUN java, and knowing what we know about the chafing between Google Android and Oracle's new ownership of Sun Java, this may explain the slow development of Minecraft for Android. Perhaps the conversion to other java variants is a stumbling point.
Been building like crazy cuz I'm new to minecraft altogether, but it hasn't crashed on me evar. So I hope the features begin being added soon. I like it a lot so far.
I play minecraft a lot on my pc, so it was a bit strange to see the only building version of it. But i'm pretty sure it will be awesome once more features will be introduced. So for those that really havent played it, just hang on it's gonna be awesome!

With this release onto other Android devices, Mojang will start to focus on bringing more of the original Minecraft content found in the PC version over to the mobile version which includes Survival Mode. For those of you eager to get your hands on Minecraft: Pocket Edition's Survival Mode, it may be a little bit of a wait as Mojang needs to rebalance and tweak things before it will be released.
It makes sense that porting an entire PC title would take some time. However, it looks like they have a handle on things. It's just a patience/waiting game until they work everything out.
I tried this out. I like minecraft a lot, but I can't see playing this on a tablet. The controls are awful and the features are very limited.
So I am a huge android gamer. I do not have a pc except at work and i do not have any console systems at home. I am really loving the development that is going on with some stuff Ive seen. Unity 3d and cloud gaming is gonna be huge i think.
My goal with this thread is to try to gather some of us android gamers together. I play all day at work and at home. I need something more than Modern Combat 4 haha. Its a great game but im looking for some huge sprawler. I have seen wildblood from gameloft, looks amazing. I am trying to figure out what people are playing on this device. maybe develop a little support thread for us gamers to unite and share what we have found with each other. I havent really been able to find anything about it anywhere for our device. seems all the attention is always on the one x. our phones are powerful....lets unleash it!
I agree. I'm down to play whatever multi player/coop games we have. Let me know!!

I would be too. I guess MC4 multi is only on wifi, but im sure there are some good things out there. I really am sort of enjoying Aralon. Played it?
Am i to assume that really no one plays any games on our device?!
Its too small to do any serious gaming on
What do you mean too small? I play stuff on it all the time. Classic games for sure. I even tried OnLive and demoed the free demo for Darksiders 2 and it worked awesome. Im trying to figure out pairing my ps3 controller for better use, but you could even do mhl out and play dead trigger and whatnot with a ps3 controller. Havent heard of the Ouya? well our phone is powerful as well, i see no need to buy a console when i have one in my hand.
Figuring out compatibility with games that I know the unit could run, i.e. Horn and Six Guns. Let me know if anyone is interested in this as well, I think we should work together as I see no real gaming support community out there. If anyone knows one please let me know.
Too small: When using touchkeys, your fingers covers half the screen and you cant see where youre going
Controller, sure, but unless you have one that can dock the phone, you face another problem - the screen is too far away and therefore too small.
Now a tablet on the other hand have plenty of space for your fingers and can easily be seen when using a controller
So, therefore: The One S is too small for serious gaming
Edit: Whats wrong with six guns? Seems to work just fine?
gameklip acttaches phone to controller. i can play fine with touch controls, maybe youre not a good gamer.
woa that was uncalled for. In that case - maybe youre an 8 year old girl with paperthin fingers?
maybe, im just saying that why should i have multiple devices? i already have a powerful device.
No one said that. You asked if you were to assume nobody played games on the one S, and I answered "its too small" as the reason as to why I dont play 'hardcore' on it.
And Im sure Im not alone.
well thats a great answer i guess. Now as far as people that would actually like to do so? any input there?
not to sure if this would fall under our forums as a development but it was only developed for android so maybe if could sit in the dev forum if not it can be moved to were ever it would situated ( im assuming the acces page ) but this pad is quite nice granted at 49.99 + tax it's not bad it's like 59.99 + tax at toy's r us other then the price this works great for any gamer that has the older like gameboy rom's or snes emulators etc it is quite a impressive piece of hardware and it's lightweight

Not only that, but this thing doesn't seem like a good product. Here's why:
It requires an app on the phone to relay your commands into the game. This means that it has extremely limited game compatibility.
The PSP style analog nubs as your only movement interface make this thing a joke.
The only thing this has going for it is the clever system of attaching the phone to the controller then when the phone is not being used for gaming...folds back into the controller itself. There are numerous options right now for attaching a phone to the controller, but most of them are the same size when they are not being used as when they are.
In short....I see only *ONE* advantage of using this over something like a gameklip. There are so many reasons why you would not want to use it though.

i have to agree the "joysticks" need to be digital because it would make them alot more responsive within games and they need to be "looser" to allow for faster movement of your thumbs like the xbox sticks those are more fluent in movement then this moga is but i play the older SNES games on my emulator and it works "alright" ( mortal kombat not so good lol ) anyways theres gonna be more improvment so ill just keep my receipt lol if it gets any worse
