Does Wi-Fi chip support lowering power - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi peeps. Came across a way to lower Wi-Fi signal strength to save power. Having a few problems, but came across another thing that said not all hardware can be adjusted. Before I tinker with this anymore, does anyone know if our Wi-Fi chip can be adjusted?
http://jhanford.wordpress.com/2011/10/03/lowering-wi-fi-transmit-power-in-android/

Nice find! When I started, the utility reported that the TX-power was 1496dBm. When I told it to set it to 4dBm, it lowered it to 398dBm, so it does seem to be working (basically, you divide the number that the utility is reporting by 100).
It seems that the TF700 defaults to 14dBm and I just lowered it to 4dBm.
Now, whether or not it's *really* doing anything, I'm not sure. I'll have to do some further testing. But, this does look promising!
Thanks for sharing this. I'll report back after I do some further testing.
What problems are you having?
EDIT: FYI, it seems that 14dBm is the max and 1dBm is the min for the TF700. I have mine set to 1dBm right now. Will try to determine if it actually makes a difference next...

I finally managed to beat mine into submission, and shows reduced values now. Thanks for confirmation on that. Article showed values much lower than my tab reported. I'm also running at 1
Update: applied this to my phone as well. Added bonus, it drops power while hot spotting, so should use less power. If your tethered, your seldom more than a few feet away. Full power is a waste.
Read of an app called Wi-Fi tf power that supposedly switches power. I can't get it to work. All choices revert you back to default. (well, it does me) and I have to force stop it, reset permissions, and decrease it through term emulator.
Please keep me posted on your findings, and I'll do the same.

When I applied this to my phone then hotspot, it truly DID decrease broadcast signal. I lost hotspot connection to phone as I got about 20 feet away.

Running CleanROM Inheritance here too, of course - is there any other ROM for the TF700?!?!
Unfortunately, I can't say that I've noticed any difference, regardless of what I set this setting to on either my TF700 or my Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 also defaults to 14dBm and when I set either to 1dBm, I don't see any difference on my wireless router - the router runs DD-WRT, so I can see the actual signal strength coming from each device, which should get much lower when going from 14dBm to 1dBm.
I also have an Android phone, but haven't messed with it yet - I've gotten so spoiled by the TF700 keyboard dock and the larger screen size of the Nexus 7, that I try not to do much typing on the phone anymore! In fact, it's not even unlocked (it's a HTC 3D and requires some hardware modification to unlock, I think - never really looked into in that much to be honest).

Unexpected reboots

So it seems I'm getting more and more of these nowadays. At first I thought it might be Battery HD, which I removed, as I didn't remember installing anything else lately which might be running, but today at the very moment I removed the tablet from the dock, it just rebooted (almost) instantly. Wonder if more of you experience this.
I was getting these on the stock launcher yesterday and I'm getting it today while on Nova.
I would really love this unlocking tool right now..
i got mines on thursday and have not had one reboot.

After reading your posts...your OBVIOUSLY doing much more to your unit than the average user. Especially since it just started happening to you after you did all these tweaks.
The glowball thread is irrevelant....just because someone is havingan issue with an APP...now all of a sudden its a disease and your unit caught it.....
Comical..
If you expect the unexpected, is there truly a thing as an unexpected reboot?
Well, certainly wasn't expecting it to constantly reboot on undocking, so I guess the pun doesn't work in this case.

Pun? That was no pun. You weren't expecting the unexpected so you were surprised.
I was expecting not to have them... let's just... EOT. I don't see a point in analysing my expectations further, as this was not the issue in the first place. You may call them "sudden" if this helps you settle things in your mind.

I am not a power user by any means, and I can confirm that the machine rebooted a couple of times while watching 720p videos.
Is there a CPU usage/temperature log somewhere on android? That could help track down the origin of these nasty reboots and file complaints to ASUS.

You can find numerous apps for CPU monitoring in the playstore, but I haven't found one for monitoring CPU temperature (only battery temperature)

I've had at least 2-3 random reboots in the last 4 days. Once it happened while loading up the Facebook app. Another time it happened while browsing the web with the stock browser. Both times the screen when white and had a thin black line down the side, then after 15s the boot screen appeared with the Asus logo.
So far most everything has been working and I've been happy with the Infinity. But having a number of random reboots in a single week and not being able to get an uptime over 2 days is a fairly major problem for me. Note that it is not rooted or tweaked in any way.

Wifi Boost question

Hello everyone not must of a poster more of a reader have a quick question I noticed my laptop can pick up way more wifi signals at a distance is there a tweak or a way to boost the wifi on the tf700 to pick up wifi signals?
I'm finding the WiFi radio in the TF700T to be a bit underwhelming too. But considering it's a $500 device they had to keep costs down somewhere and I think much of that $500 goes to the screen and CPU. IMO the sound system and WiFi radio didn't get much of a budget to work with.

I don't believe that these apps increase the power of the wifi radio - they are mainly for cell phones - all they do is look for a stronger signal and switch to the stronger network. In the case of wifi, I don't think it will help at all unless you have multiple wifi routers and you aren't using the one closest to you (but then again, you can switch that yourself - no need for an app)...

Many comments say otherwise, so perhaps it's worth a try. Personally I don't like to make statements based on a "belief", so I'd try it if I were you, although I've just posted the links, I haven't tried it myself yet. Having said that, I believe the idea is boosting the radio capabilities in the similar fashion as Volume+ boosts your speakers' volume. I'll have a look at it in a spare hour.

Actually, I have used these apps on my phone and they will not help with wifi connections unless there are multiple hotspots, which again, you could do yourself.
It says it right in the app description: "drops your current connection and connects to a better connection" - that's all it does. Like I said, it's mainly for cell phone connections. Not going to help for home wifi connections and is certainly not going to boost the power to your wifi radio.
And if you really read the comments, you'll see that they also introduce SPAM and is generally a waste of time.
I would *not* install these apps for this purpose - you are wasting your time.
Just my opinion of course - everyone is entitled to one!

Will Asus fix the lag and crashes on TF700T

Im now on 5th day with my TF700T.
So far it have been mixed feelings about it.
I love the keyboard, dont think i can have a tab without a keyboard in the future.
There is also no other tablet out there that have what I want.
The thing that worries me a bit is the lag on the device. Sometimes I must wait several seconds before it responds. And this is not the touch screen, becouse when I just wait, it will do what i wanted. This is not fun when you are sufring a simple webpage.
Will Asus fix this lag in the Jelly Bean 4.1 update?
How about people that have rooted (custom rom) their devices, do they have the same issues?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
ummm, i dont think anyone on here can answer that question. JB is a google OS update.
Try resetting
Then check the firmware version.
The only delays I see after tapping are when web browsing.
Everything else is snappy as far as snappy can be under Android.
Are you running in the balanced mode?
First thing I did was root mine and freeze all of the useless crap they preinstall. Havent ever had any lag issues.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Have had the tablet just less then a week. I very surprised at just how poor the performance is on this. Here are some of the issues I'm having:
-If I leave the web browser app for other apps and then come back to it, my web pages reload. It's like the multitasking fail that is present on the HTC EVO 4G LTE or HTC One series only not as pronounced.
-Some Flash heavy websites are so choppy and laggy. Scrolling is very choppy.
-The Netflix app is almost unusable. Scrolling through my queue seems like it's getting about 5 frames per second. Oddly enough, actually watching movies plays perfectly if I can manage to scroll to select the right movie
-Some games, even ones that are promoted through the Tegra Zone are very laggy.
I really want to love this tab. It's so great for me in so many other ways but I can't live with it if this is what I can expect
I'm rooted, not unlocked, stock ROM. I've been running in performance mode. I've tried with and without Nova Launcer. I've removed or frozen everything I dare to using TB. I've looked through this and other forums for tips on improving performance but so far nothing has helped. Do I have a lemon? Are these problems common? Is this what this tab is? Please help, really want to get this thing running like I'm pretty sure it can.
im going to go ahead and assume that asus had a bad batch of tf700t's go out. i had one with the same problem and i returned it, got a new and havent experienced the same problem again. so fast and snappy that jellybean will just make this tablet crazy.
Because of some problems i have with my pad i have decided to factory reset it a week ago.
Since than the experience is sooo much better. Didn't solve my problem though

Not sure what to tell you...
I don't have any really bad slowness.
Kind of sounds like a bad processor or gpu core or other hardware bug like maybe ram errors.
IMO wouldn't say these are common problems.

C6. From Amazon maybe 4 days ago. Is that older or more known to have issues. I'm still well within my return period from Amazon. If C7 is known to be better it would be worth it to me to return it and buy it from a store where I can look at the serial number on the box first. Thanks for the replies... The tablet serial number can be found on the box the tablet came in and on the bottom of the tablet itself on a sticker (on the part of the tablet that would go into the dock if you use one).
The only difference between a C6 serial number and a C7 serial number is that one was manufactured in June and one in July (the number after the C is the month it was manufactured in)....

For my limited use, the lag and freezing was driving me nuts. Of course, I've been down this road before with the Prime. Eventually the Prime community found the tweaks and mods to make it fly, and I admit it was part of the fun to experiment and find ways to squeeze more performance and stability from the tablet.
My problems with the Infinity seem to exacerbate when RAM goes below 200k. I can see this from the Cool Tool widget. When I get below this level, the browser is generally unusable. I use a tool called startup cleaner to minimize what launches and tried to keep widgets to a minimum but my RAM seemed to always run low. Based on this same experience with the Prime, I changed the setting in developer options to limit background processes to 2. This does a good job keeping RAM above 400K, and when I do this it runs very well. No lag or ANRs, and everything seems very fluid.
This was an early temp fix with the Prime until other mods caught up, so I don't expect this to be required long term. However, the results are really are dramatic so far and enough to keep me from going the Note 10.1 route.

That's a good tweak, and one I hadn't tried before, so thanks!
If you're unlocked, I would advise you to run...don't walk, and flash TWRP recovery and then the Zeus rom v 4.0. This is a totally different machine on that rom.
There is also the trick of turning off animations in Developer Options or set the scale to .5. That helps with smoothness, too.
My advice is not to exchange over simple lagginess if all other hardware issue are ok. There is so much more that can and will be done on the software side, but if you exchange, what if you get a tab with a major hw problem?

I have them as well, and while I would like them to pack up and leave, I concur with the OP that it is not a deal breaker of any sort.
I can't remember having them on ICS -- would this be a JB thing?
Only happens to me very rarely, only when browsing, once or twice a day at most. Never in games, films, music or documents...
Working on it?-- That implies that they still care about us. They don't. I have almost 50 of these that I support, all have the issue and even after working with Tien and Gary to get a resolution.... they have given me absolutely nothing as far as support goes.
They have suggested cold boots and factory resets... that is all. And NO, those actions fix NOTHING.
Tien... you even abandoned my support call..
Last communication that I had with him was this on 11/7:
Hi Jordan,
Sorry for the late reply, but I just wanted to inform you that we have passed all this information back to HQ so they can test and figure out a solution. I am confident, with all the material we've supplied, that they can duplicate and figure something out. I just want to thank you for sticking through this. Hopefully the new firmware update will address all these issues.

Tien,
I am assuming by now that you or your company has been able to reproduce the graphics issues, reboots and issues that have been happening with the TF700. If you are having trouble with that, there are large groups of users getting these problems, documented here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811538&page=14
Please let me know what asus plans to do to resolve these issues. Again, these are company machines that are relied on everyday as a primary work space for some. Please email me asap to let me know a time frame that I can expect some sort of resolution.

From time to time, a black horizontal line flashes across the screen, usually in the upper third (at least when I noticed), seems to be random. Looks like a GPU driver issue (maybe NVidia's fault?) because it appeared first with the JB updates.

I'm pretty sure sbdags is applying his magic as we speak. He has a lot to go over, so give it a few days. I do hope the new update remedies it to a large extent, because they are annoying.
The remark of "no developer options ticked" seems to deny me the pleasure of disabling 2D GPU GUI rendering and seeing them leave automagically. I had that idea yesterday evening -- well, I'm going to try anyway. (If it should somehow work out, that'd be a strong lead to suspect a driver issue. Damn you, NVIDIA! )
PS: are we all on CROMI? (Me: v2.7.2) I guess stock ROM is no different to all intents and purposes as far as the black line issue goes. Do any of the people in here that use AOSP/AOKP/CM10 have them too?

Interesting suggestion! I hadn't noticed anuyhthing partiucular in connection with the WiFi being on while the problem occurred. I am curious to see if I can ''fix'' this myself. Anoter workaround for an -- essentially -- hardware issue? (If you are correct, and that carries a rather high probablility, you'd suspect the Tegra3 to be susceptible to some kind of EMF reception and static build-up internally or something,. Ugh, another unsolvable issue to contend with. And still I like this device very much.

Upgrade tf201 to tf700?

I have a tf201 that has the very latest 4.3.1 ROM installed that is running very well. It has an ANTU benchmark of 14562. I'm thinking about buying a used tf700 as a replacement and have been reading in this forum about customizing the 700. It would appear that pepple are having problems unlocking used tablets and I'm wondering if this is a common problem? I know these forums tend to exagerate some problems because you hear more from the people having problems than those that don't.
It will probably cost me about $100 more for a 700 than what I can get for my 201 and I'd like some opinions from people who actually like their 700's about whether the extra money is worth it.
Thanks for any advice.

There seem to be issues unlocking at the moment. I don't know how it is working for most people, but my brother can't unlock his tablet and he has been trying for a few weeks. If you are looking at a used tablet, there may be one that is already unlocked. Aside from that I'm not sure. I can say that the screen on the tf700 is nice looking, It may be worth it if this is what is important to you.

Screen res is not a high priority with me. I'm 75 years old and my tired old eyes can't see the difference. In fact, I have two 40" monitors and they are both set to only 1360x768. What I'm really looking for is better page load times in browsers. Other than that I'm perfectly happy with my TF201. I use my tablet mainly as a book reader and Internet browser while I'm out and about. I don't watch movies ( I do that on the 40" while at home.) and don't play games, so pretty pictures don't mean a lot.
But thank you for your input.

I have a TF700 and a TF201. Is it worth the upgrade? No. Is the screen far superior on the TF700 - yes. The TF201 runs faster than the TF701 for graphics intensive programs but suffers from poor wifi and gps.....

What's the problem with the TF201 wifi? Signal strength or actual transfer speed? Would the wifi cause my poor browser page load speed even with a good connection?

I'm not experiencing poor wifi connections with my TF201 so I guess my answer is to save my money and stick with it. Thanks everyone for your help.

I'm selling the TF201and keeping the TF700 The screen is keeping me on the Infinity. Let's be honest I use the screen for everything.
As for WiFi, in the same room the prime gets 3 bars whereas the infinity gets 4. Speeds are slower on the prime once it drops to 2 bars. I didn't really notice it until I got the infinity. They put the plastic strip on then back for a reason.
