What can we stock users expect from a custom rom like cleanrom?
Is it really that much faster?
Will the input lag be solved ? Because now my tablet takes a few seconds to catch up with what i wrote.
I get a lot freezes where applications hang. Especially the stock browser, every few minutes i get "program is not responding" wait or close
Overal the tablet feels laggy and slow and i wonder if cleanrom will fix all these issues or that i have to accept it as it is

Yes, it worth to run cleanrom 2.4. It makes everything works the way it suppose too and it makes the device worth $500. Without cleanrom, I would return my tablet. Seriously, I was once afraid to unlock because I don't know if it really better, and now people whom are not happy with their devices should unlock and flash this rom, then kick yourself in the bud for not doing it sooner.
YES!! Unlock it and use the CleanROM & Data2SD mods. I was previously on CleanRom 2.3 only but it was still lagging, especially when I'm updating an app and trying to surf. Ofcourse, this is caused by the inherently poor memory Asus installed in this device. With the Data2SD mod, I'm able to multitask without the lags. TF700 + Jellybean + CleanROM + Data2SD = iPad killer

I keep looking for new updates and fixes, so i guess pretty desperate. I have tried lots of resets but i can't really say that it was helping. I have been experiencing some weird problems lately, the screen will sometimes not respond on my finger, it looks like the device is stuck but when i use the dock to navigate it works normally. With a restart it goes away but i do fear it might be some hardware issue, altough it's probably very unlikely. Problems like these make me wonder if i should give up my warranty. On the other hand i feel that i'm not productive on this tablet the way it runs at moment. I have downgraded to ICS, i have done a few factory resets, nothing helps, at the moment i'm running JB which seems just as bad. Ever since i got this device i have been resetting and updating, hoping to get rid of some problems, i would like to use my device and stop worrying about these kind of problems. It gives me some hope that cleanrom users report some improvement, thanks for the feedback.

The echo of desperation there it seems
Is it possible to return the Asus for a different brand or perhaps another TF700?
If not a new ROM would be the next step.
There are a few pre-unlock tricks, although the ultimate fix for some would be the custom ROM route.
Do custom ROMs fix the lag transitioning between apps?
Really the only lag I notice on mine is when I use dolphin to browse the web, and during Netflix. That's really it. Not sure if a custom ROM will fix those issues :-/

My Infinity spontaneously crapped out, so I'd say don't ditch the warranty unless you have e.g. SquareTrade aftermarket warranty as a backup. Asus's QC is just too poor to trust these devices to last.

I had the warranty officially for 5 days. The improvements with using CleanROM are astounding over plain stock. Plus, you will be able to make this tablet a beast for many moons after Asus stops updating the software. And the modifications are almost endless

I unlocked mine and 2 days later I am faced with non-functional, bricked unit, without any warranty (this is completely hardware related, not software). It was a $500 mistake. It was very very good, for two days.

Without any more relevant information, I'd strongly hesitate in establishing a cause/effect relationship here. I'm sorry for the fact that you are out of warranty (seemingly), but I'd still take it up with ASUS. Unlocking the 700 probably didn't have anything to do with -- unless yo udid something stupid -- which we all do sometimes.
Uhh, I did anything but establish a cause and effect relationship. That's why I said my issue was hardware related. It had nothing whatsover to do with unlocking. My point is that with a [seemingly] very high defect ratio on these machines, the consequence of completely removing all warranty (even for unrelated issues), is severe.

I unlucked my device and so far I'm very happy with it, it's unbelievable how much of a difference it made, at first i was skeptical about what other users reported but i can confirm that it's true. ASUS is doing a terrible job with their software, taking away warranty because users want normal use out of their device...they should be sued, anyway this will be my last ASUS product ever, I'm content with my infinity now thanks to the custom roms on xda, but i feel ASUS should see the consequences of their policies, the only thing i can do is stop supporting them with my wallet.
I don't know how it works in the US or other places, but here in europe there is a law that states that customers should have two years of warranty, i doubt ASUS can overrule that law by a simple " I AGREE " statement.

Agreed -- apparently, my red flag went up before I had actually read and consumed your reply. My sincere apologies. You're right, but there are loads of people that have been unlocked and flashing away since the beginning, myself included. My guess is that, from a statistical point of view -- which is worthless in your case, where a 100% of TF700s are sucky devices -- most of the 700s are actually fine.

I've had an ANR twice. Once with Chrome, 86 tabs open (picture leeching off website). The other one was my fault also, but cannot reconstruct it as well from my mind.

You're right, obviously, as EU consumer law is pretty strict. However, you'd need to bring a lawyer into play, as ASUS will just keep its stance when you contact them telling them so. There's a minimum of two years' warranty against factory defects or "inability to use for intended purpose" -- the last term is pretty broad, actually.
Unlocking and flashing any of these roms is not a magic bullet, thought it will perform better. I'm currently playing around with Paranoid Android and really digging it.
My biggest gripe with unlocking is that I can't view play store movies and tv shows in HD anymore, I wouldn't really use it that often but it's lost functionality and it kinda pisses me off. For instance, took the family away on vacation this past summer and being able to hook up my tablet to the flat screen where we stayed was pretty nice. Now, I'll have to either have movies already installed and ripped from a bluray or just watch movies in, what appears to be, 480i.
Both cleanrom and Paranoid are pretty awesome roms and I highly recommend you check out both and some of the others, if you decide to unlock.

for what it's worth, my TF700 boots up in a staggering 35 seconds on Paranoid android as opposed to the 1min 40+ seconds on stock and stock based roms. wicked fast
I absolutly loved my TF 700 the last months. But it seems its getting slower and slower. Doing some slow background data transfer with 100-200kb/s and you cant work anymore. Switching between apps takes too long, the browser reacts awfully and every couple of seconds the "would you like to close the app?" screen.
Im so pissed right now. Is Asus ever going to remove the Issue and the awfully black stripe on the screen?
If I could I would return the tablet but I have to stick with it...
Can u install the clearmod without changing the bootloader? Can u still recieve updates? If yes I will try that if nothing changes till new year.

Yes I did factory reset, wipe and exchanged the tablet for mechanical problems. This is a major problem with most tablets.

Agreed. Do yourself a favor and unlock the 700, and install CleanROM. World of difference, and only minor risk involved. Really!

Not to pi55 on people's CleanROM parade here, but a reminder that my Infinity died a sudden death after only two months on Friday. All unlocking suggestions should be appended with a 'must buy extra warranty' note, what with such awful QC in Asusland.

I had the same experience after the last update, BUT then rolled back to .30 and re-updated using the DLPKGFILE method and now things are much better. Browser still acts a little wonky now and then but it doesn't seem to be IO related as background downloads have little effect on overall performance.
I'll second the last post, while cleanrom seems to be amazing from reports, there have been too many reports of bricking trying to reboot to recovery for me to give up my Warranty.
Choice of nand aside I think this tablet is great and qc is no worse than any other tablet out there. I looked at the samsung windows 8 tab the other day and it felt like a cheap POS compared to the infinity.
So I finally installed Clean Rom with Fsync -> disabled.Stock kernel and launcher, no changes and no wipe/factory reset. Before that I was about to eat my TF700 alive
Now it feels like it is another new rocking tablet. Everything is so smooth and works so fast. Apps open in 2 seconds where it needed 5 before. Browsing works almost as fast as on my desktop pc. The new surface is much better than the one provided by Asus
But if somehow you get one that should've failed QC and you unlocked the thing...
Then just give some time to settle. Look for little defects or signs that you may of gotten a lemon before unlocking, bad screen, buttons etc.
I've only had mine for two weeks, still on the OTA 4.1 JB. Yeah its a little hicups at times, but overall i think its very smooth, games play pretty good.
I'm just waiting for a bit to make sure its stable as a rock and everything is looking good before I unlock it.

So CleanROM sorts out absolutely everything on the tablet? Do you need to put on the IO fix onto an SD Card as well?
It is optional. I didnt do it. If there is an offer on SD Cards I will do it later on for even more speed.

I have to agree with the op...... i would add that my browser was much improved after JB but since has ground to a mind numbing lag when i first open pages. Scrolling while the page opens (and stalls) brings a FC message. Ive cleared cache, cold reboot, etc.... stock browser is still garbage. Too bad browsing is such a drag on this product. My old Mytouch 4G kicks the S**T out of this tired, tired tab.... lol, turbo-fail!

I have applied the new update and i think it may have sped the situation up a bit.....that is, the lag when I load a page has lessened to some degree... not disappeared.....now we shall see if it slows down again...

I bought mine 1 week back with lot of hopes and expectations. I did see posts about IO issue here, but I thought it wouldn't bother me much. But I am extremely disappointed. It lags really badly whenever I try to download something. Right now, I am looking for reasons not to return it. I would have already returned it, but I don't really like going to UPS and do the shipping.
Please advice me...Should I wait hoping that Asus will fix this, or return it and get Nexus 10 or Surface? I am on the latest 4.1.1 Asus original firmware.
Yeah, if you plan on downloading something or just transferring files on/off it you better just do it and let it be. Multi tasking is impossible in those situations.

i dont know about you guys but i love my tf700 ... now!
at first, yeh i was a bit (a lot) disapointed, but now... runnin cromi and on/off with clemsyn/stock kernel it is a beast!
i have an oc'd gs2 also which is an animal... and all thanks to custom roms and tweaks and rooting!
imho: unlock,root,cromi the biatch,some d2sd action and block ads with adaway and browsing/gaming/etc is awsum!

I'm just about to receive my Infinity and have been reading through the posts here. I've read quite a few horror stories about people bricking their tablets, not being able to power it up, etc etc.
I'm not sure what version of Android it'll be running when I get it so I'd like to know what are the things I should really be avoiding when using the lock tool, flashing the boot loader and the rom (cromix :good: )?
From the impression I've got, the device seems very fickle/easy to brick/break. Am I wrong in thinking that?
The TF700 users here seem like a helpful bunch so hopefully I could get a few pointers on things NOT to do....

Hi, and welcome to the community!
First things first: check the unit thoroughly for the known issues (screen bleed, loose screen bonding, etc. Several threads in here concerning the most frequent issues.
1) If you happen to get a pre-.30 firmware (which is unlikely at this point in time), install Nvflash first and pull the backups. That might save you form not only severe headaches but a pretty stack of dollars too, if the excrement hits the ventilator.
2) Try and see if the unlock tool works. In a relatively large percentage of 700s, it doesn't. That would solve your problem instantly. (You can then proceed to update to the latest stock ROM, but no custom ROM'in' for you then. That << smiley is actually very mean, because that would be some major suck.)
3) Whatever you do, ONLY use the most recent versions of whatever recovery has your preference. Also update the bootloader to the version your ROM of choice requires!
4) Unless you have extensive experience with flashing and ROMs in general, it might be prudent to pick a stock-based ROM (i.e. CROMI-X). If you comfortable with the odd bug here and there, you might try an AOSP/AOKP/CM-based ROM and see if they fit your bill.
CROMI-X has a great OP with all the updates to bootloader and such you'll need.
5) Don't do anything if you're not sure when starting out. The 700 is not particularly easy to brick, but it is relatively hard to fix in some cases that on other devices (Samsung's comes to mind) would just mean reflashing some stuff (in Odin/Heimdall).

If it doesn't work it just gives some error message. I haven't heard of anyone bricking because the unlock tool failed, so you should be safe there. As far as I'm aware the only issue you'll have from the unlock tool not working is just the fact that you're not going to be unlocked lol.

I'm with Martin on this:
Until you are sure that your tab is not a lemon with major hardware issues I would not unlock it.
You can root it and start playing around with some more advanced settings in the meantime. Wouldn't it really suck if you unlocked and a day or week later the digitizer would go bad? Asus could say: Sorry, pal - you're unlocked, you're out of warranty.
They have repaired even unlocked devices under warranty, but you can't count on it. And in some cases the repaired tablet came back with a permanently locked bootloader....
So give it a few weeks, in the meantime start reading the relevant thread of your favorite custom ROM(s) to get a feel for them, and familiarize yourself with the process and lingo of flashing.

So give it a few weeks, in the meantime start reading the relevant thread of your favorite custom ROM(s) to get a feel for them, and familiarize yourself with the process and lingo of flashing.

Hi there,
When I had bought my tf700 I did'nt have a clue what custom rom is.
I was totally naive and ignorant as to Android technology.
I was disappointed with my TF700 performance and lived with it for a couple of months.
Afterwards, I searched the internet until I have found this marvellous forum (which attracts OCDs like the fire attracts moth).
I read and read and read and read, and read more and asked the fine users of this fine forum if I got it all right,
and then one springy night on the end of March 2013, something happened.
A magic...
"I took the red pill" , unlocked my TF700, pushed TWRP and flashed CROMI.
Everything went super.
Ever since then I follow Sbdags CROMI-X thread and keep update my firmware.
Just to remind you - I am not a Computer wizard, my occupation has got almost nothing to do with electronics and I am not a kid (actually I am 37 with many obligations like family and work - so my spare time is scarce).
And here I am - master of my TF700!
So - everything is possible!
And if you follow instructions and restrict yourself to the right method - you can be rest assured you won't brick your device.
Actually It's like cooking: you should find a good recipe and act accordingly.

It looks good, no damage, screen bleed that i can see. Screen seems fine.
Its running JRO3C.US_epad-10.4.4.25-20121228

I'm not really sure where to go from here - should I wait a few days or just unlock and put CROMI-X on now?
Speed of the system isnt bad, transitions seem a bit slow, havent really installed a bunch of apps yet...

Well, the rational next step would be to wait a week, or two, or however long you can stand it, and then unlock etc.
But where's the fun in rational, right?
Well, while you decide - why not upgrade it to JB 4.2.1? Saves you a bootloader flash and clean install later....

Is 4.2.1 worth the update? I read that 4.2.1 caused a few issues for some people....
I probably will just flash it It feels like it should run quicker, take Maps for example. seems REALLY laggy but on my N7 it was fine?

JB 4.2 was better for most people, others had issues with Bluetooth tethering and some other stuff...
The reason I recommend you upgrade to stock 4.2 is mainly that then you automatically would have the correct bootloader on our tablet.
For Cromi-X you need the 4.2 bootloader. If you are on 4.1 you have to flash it before you flash Cromi-X, if you are already on 4.2 you're good to go. One less thing that could go wrong....

You could have got the Nook HD+ 32GB for $180 and dead easy to root and put CM 10.1 or Carbon on it and no concern of bricking it. Stock 2.1 on the HD+ is barely ok (very barely), but CM 10.1 rocks.
A little smaller tablet, but same great display resolution. I use this more than my iPad 4 now, which is both a compliment to the HD+ and an insult to how much I paid for the iPad 4.

Personally, when I had this problem, I just tried to run the app every day for a week oe so and it eventually works, but others have had to use tricks. Use the search for unlock, you will find several ideas about fixing it.
Just found out about the MAJOR lag issues surrounding it I have 14 days to return it. I was looking for a $400 tablet, not too old with good battery life and came across this.
Do the clean and cromi-x roms 'renew' it completely?
Would you have returned your tablet and gotten something else if you'd known this would happen??
Should i return it, or just keep it (and flash)?
I keep hearing people saying to get the nexus 10, but even that has its issues apparently (battery drain + slow charging).

Yes, clean rom cromi, cm10.1, etc.. speed up the device very well! it will fly
I own a TF300T and we have basicly the same thing on stock rom: very bad lag! so if you like stock i would reccomend crom-x/cleanrom or TF700 specific roms based on stock
Honestly i would return it and save the money for some upcoming device.It's one year old,you have to unlock it (and loose your warranty) in order to have more decent performance and you will mostlikely end-up spending more time to tweak the device than actually enjoy it.Ofcourse this is only my opinion,the final decision it's up to you.

If I had it to do over again...it would go back. Sorry to say that but you should NOT have to make ANY changes to a tablet that is supposed to be at the top of the line. My wife's AT105-T1032 Toshiba, is a lot more stable than the TF700.
Here are some of MY problems:
ANY browser will loose input from the onscreen keyboard...doesn't matter if it's Asus KB or Swiftkey or Google
The lag is so bad at times the KB won't appear for a second or two
ANY browser will just force close for no appearent reason...doesn't happen often but it does happen
The screen is loose on the lower right corner, I thought this issue had fixed itself but I noticed it again the other day
When posting on forums none of the browsers work correctly. They make it a horrible experiance and I usually have to give up and go to my PC to complete posts I want to make. If you insert a word that was mispelled it usually will appear at the top of the post you are making and delete any text it replaces. VERY VERY frustrating and has been an issue for me from day 1. (a year ago)
Here's how I intend to fix them:
When the warranty is up I will try rooting and unlocking and a different ROM. If I can't get that to make it work right for me I WILL take it out in the driveway and beat the living crap out of it, place it in a box and send it back to Asus with a detailed explanation of why they now have it in their hands
Now- it's your decision to make and you will probably read a lot of negitive replies as well as see quite a few on the forums about TF201 and TF700. It seems like people go to the forums to complain not realizing that they aren't supported by Asus. So get ready for more like this one but also you'll get quite a few saying how great this tablet is. It still all comes down to YOU.
I have NEVER been this frustrated by any computer and I'm not a happy Asus customer. BUT I will still buy Asus products, just no more tablets. I have an old P5GPL (P4) Asus motherboard that has been running for 8-9? years and has never given me one days trouble. I've replaced everything around it, power supply, hard drive and video card and it just keeps on keepin' on!

@Pretoriano80, after being on the custom rom for some time, do you see it using too much memory or getting sluggish? It's one year old but the new 10inch tablets are $500 and up. what option do i have?
I looked through your all in one guide but wouldn't know where to start since my tablet is already updated to 4.2.1.
So how would one unlock the bootloader if the instructions listed were for version below 4.2.1?
Does it mean Id have to downgrade to ICS first?
Also don't know what comes first, unlocking or rooting. Just rooting the device will not allow installation of Cromi-x/cleanRom right?
Please please return it...I know you will be tempted to unlock and install CROMI. But don't....I am using the tablet for the last 6 months I think. If it weren't for CROMI, I would have jumped over it in anger.

I kinda agree with the above, but I bought a used one of eBay not knowing what I'd gotten into. I just want to check email, watch movies, shop, etc. No real life-saving issues. Didn't notice much lag or problem with stock but went ahead and installed CROMI-X not knowing anything about android, etc. I love mine. At 400, maybe not, half the price, sure.

You can ROOT your device without unlocking your bootloader, but you can't install custom roms and a custom recovery in this case, just some apps that need rooting or some tweaks. The good part with only rooting is that your warranty will still be valid because you can return to a clean stock rom anytime. For rooting your device on 4.2.1 you will have to use MotoChopper (search in the tf700t forum).
If you unlock the bootloader then you can kiss goodbye your warranty and enjoy custom roms, custom kernels, etc but you can't go back to a bootloader locked state anymore.
No matter what you will choose (root or unlocking) don't expect miracles or else you will be disappointed. The first time you install a rom you will notice much gain in performance, but after you install some of your favourite apps you will see the performance going down again (imho this is also the reason why you can find bad and good opinions about this device, because everyone use it in different ways). Also forget about benchmarks it won't do any good to you or the device itself and you will just end-up just hunting higher scores.
I really don't know which device to recommend you becaause i only have this one, but read some reviews from trusted sites (Engadget for example was maybe one of the few to do a honest review about the tf700t) or wait until some new generation devices will be released.
Btw one year ago i paid 500€ just for the tablet so paying 500$ now for a new generation device it's in line with the tablet market in my opinion, so once again mate, it's your call.

I actually love this tab. I did do a lot of research before buying it though so I knew some issues before I bought so I also knew that I was not going to buy one for full retail and be happy. I did a lot of hunting around on craigslist and ended picking up a 64GB tab with the docking station and quite a few accessories for a little less than half of retail. I then immediately unlocked and rooted it, installed CROMI-X, and tried a coupe different kernels until I found the combination that worked for me. Finally I created a Nandroid of this setup and started using the tab.
I did have experience rooting and ROM'ing as well so I knew that I would be comfortable with that aspect and I always try to stay a little behind the curve of teh latest gadget so others can figure out how to fix the issues (because for every device there are issues).
As of right now I couldn't be happier. I got a tab that does everything I need it to and it seems sufficiently fast and responsive to me.
Would I have been happy if I paid full price a year ago and had to suffer through all of the issues that I hear being talked about on this forum? No. but at half price and time to give the great and dedicated developers on this site a chance to address the worst of the issues, Hell yeah, Great tab :good:

Thanks guys, I'll just return it then. I did a lot of research as well before picking this one...its a great tablet, but not worth full price considering its drawback. I'll probably wait for the next Infinity Pad that's coming out, although I've been hearing that even Tegra 4 has issues

Try cm 10.2 no more lag at all:thumbup:
I agree with everyone here. Return it. If you want a tablet right now just get the Nexus 10 or maybe even the Toshiba Excite Pro or sony experia z. If you want a kb dock get the HP slatebook x2 which I just bought and it a very speedy and smooth tablet. Screen isn't as high contrast and cant get as bright but it's not too bad. But if you can wait just wait for Asus to release the new Infinity pad and hopefully it performs as well as the slatebook x2. I have gotten so used to the tf700 that I did not realize how bad it really is even with cromi x or data2sd mod compared to the slatebook. So please take everyone's advice on this one.

I tried it and does get rid of transition stutter but it still lags here and there. It's still in its early stages so maybe it will get better but thats a big risk the OP will have to make.

Try CROMi-X 4.7. The only lag I get is on wake up since I disable wifi in deep sleep. No transition/scrolling lag whatsoever, browsing is lightning fast.

I've been on cromi x for a while now. You must've set your transition to 0 to not notice any lag in transition. There's still I/O issue no matter which cromi version or kernel. Anyway were getting off subject. Thanks for the advice. Let's get back on topic.

Try my latest beta version - I found some settings that may help some of the IO issues when downloading files or using the sdcard.

A little while ago, I had to send my 700 in for repair. It came back right when the latest update was released. I noticed a major decrease in speed...very, very slow. I've done the usual things like wipe it, stick with stock, etc, but nothing seems to help. I can't figure out if something happened while in for repair or if it was the update.
I adjusted to the speed and didn't think anything of it. However, the other day I was using one of the original Galaxy Tab 8.9's and noticed it is considerably faster, which obviously shouldn't be the case.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
have you tried rooting and installing a custom rom?

If you want to stay on stock you can try:
Factory Reset
disable/uninstall all apps you do not use
Keep widgets to a select few if any
no live wallpaper
disable auto-updating in the Play Store
try Clean master from the Play Store - seems to be all the rage right now

I haven't tried a custom ROM yet... was hoping to stay stock if possible. I have done everything else listed above except clean master. Even with a clean install and extremely minimal apps, it is incredibly slow. I'll give cleanmaster a shot!

I suppose it's possible... This doesn't sound right. I mean, the TF700 is not exactly blowing your hair back, but it's not that slow.
Can you take it to a store and compare it side by side to a brand new unit? That would answer if it is your tablet or if in your perception all Transformers are slow.

Hi, the issue seems to be that apps/OS use a lot more RAM nowadays.
Installing Clean Master from Google Play (works better if you are rooted) and flushing running tasks fixes it, there is also a setting where you can make it flush the tasks whenever you unlock the tablet!
Give it a shot, I was hesitant to try it and now I am really happy with it.
Which is the right Clean Master?

I also have this sluggish problem with my TF700 and want to try the Clean Master app from the Google Play store, but when I search for it, about a dozen apps come up with that name or a variant of it. Which one is the correct Clean Master app you are referring to?
