Dunno if this is a brick or not... deleted my system (no boot) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I can get into recovery but I deleted my system files... so must I use odin and a custom recovry (will i looose root?)
Or how does this work
if i could trasfer files onto it I be fine? anyway to force it open I can get into recovry still so there must be a way to force phone on to put files on it or to run a file from computer using twrp

mount usb storage.

mounted in twrp love this recovry problem solved.. note to self ... never delete alll data again

In recovery do your wipes and flash a ROM too easy. No ROM on phone like said mount storage and drop a ROM there.

Thanks. lol I'm getting my PhD in internet jibberish. It helps if you never really make sense yourself.

its not really considered a brick if you wiped your "system", you just dont have a rom installed to boot from, you can just flash a backup in recovery, you did create a backup right, or just flash a rom from your sdcard

[Q] HELP... hosed up the SR

Damn... got a bit too adventurous with the SR. Used the UOT Kitchen to make a simple battery/icon mod. Created the zip successfully.. but don't have CWM installed (running stock 3e Recovery). I was rooted running OTA 2.3.6. On my PC, I extracted the framework-res.apk from the zip and moved it to the SR. Moved it to /system first to fix permission (rw.r.r), then was going to move it to /system/framework folder. But being a complete azzclown, I thought I'd be cautious and rename my stock framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk.OEM. Didn't even have a chance to move the cooked up framework-res.apk to /system/framework folder cause as soon as I renamed the good framework-res.apk, I was in FC hell. F. Anyway, now I'm stuck at the "SAMSUNG" boot screen. What's the best course of action at this point?
I can get into stock 3e Recovery Mode... but hoping there's a way I can just somehow rename my good framework-res.apk.OEM back to framework-res.apk. (Reality tells me I can't). Anyway, I do have a Titanium Backup on my external SD. Just not sure what the best steps are from 3e Recovery: In 3e Recovery, do I "wipe data/factory reset" ? Do I need to "wipe cache partition", or will I just F it up more.
I m pretty sure this will help!
it's Sean's work!
When in 3 e recovery do a factory data reset (home button is enter)
7. now close and reopen odin
8.pull the battery on your phone and put it back into download mode
9.in the pda slot this time select clockwork recovery.tar
10.make sure your phone is in the com slot and hit flash
11. now reboot into clockwork also doing a factory data reset
12.clearing cache partition
13.go to advanced and clear dalvik cache
14. lastly go under mounts and storage and format system
15. now install any rom of choice .. your phone should be clean

Appdroid... thanks for the quick reply... appreciate the help. I was avoiding putting CWM on until official ICS OTA rolled out... was going to keep the OTA 2.3.6 and 3e Recovery until then. If I wipe data/factory reset from 3e Recovery, will this put framework-res.apk back in /system/framework? Or is my only option now is going to download mode and Odin flash (and trip the counter)...
It may work, try it ans see, i wont hurt anything, have you ever had cwm on your device at all?

I've never installed CWM... I rooted the stock 2.3.5 with SuperOneClick back in November, then took the OTA 2.3.6 update... and maintained my root. I just did the wipe data/factory reset.. that looks like it only wiped my user data and reformatted the /data partition. Now when I try to get back into Recovery Mode, I get a white triangle with a yellow exclamation in the middle.. and a green droid under that.. WTF?
OK... I can get back into 3e Recovery... but can confirm, the "wipe data/factory reset" only erases user data... it formats the /data and /cache partitions. When I reboot from Recovery, it still gets stuck at the 2nd SAMSUNG during boot. Do I need to Odin flash CWM, or can I somehow Odin flash the stock 2.3.5 with 3e Recovery, then re-root... or will flashing the stock ROM also trip the counter?
I believe kernal only trips counter, but who cares about the counter. Do what you gotta do to save her. You could prob just odin cwm, wipe and flash a rom

UPDATE: saved the Rocket!
Appdroid, cdshepherd: Thanks (and XDA Thanks buttons pressed as well!). Brought the SR back from the brink of brickmania. Nearly 5 hours of hell from one idiotic move (which was renaming "framework-res.apk" instead of simply overwriting it with the UOT Kitchen cooked-up mod). Anyway, used Sean's method to wipe phone and Odin flash CWM. Then the fun really started when it was time to flash a ROM via CWM.. and I had no ROMs on my sdcard! So pulled my external sd out of SR, put it in a MicroSD adapter... then discovered my desktop computer couldn't read my MicroSD! So, shoved the MicroSD adapter in my work laptop, it auto-added drivers so SD was recognized in the laptop. Then, back to the desktop and copied my ROM of choice (went with silver03wrx's Stock 2.3.6) onto a USB flash drive. Ported the USB flash drive over to the laptop and copied the Stock 2.3.6 ROM to the MicroSD. Finally, popped the external SD out of the adapter and back in the SR... booted into CWM recovery, and flashed the ROM from the external SD. Things began to become much more clear after my 3rd beer and the clock striking 1am!
Re-downloaded Visual VoiceMail, Superuser, and all my purchased apps. After reinstalling Root Explorer, I actually braved the UOT Kitchen fiasco again and flashed my Kitchen mods... all working to perfection. Titanium restored all my user apps+data (and yes, did NOT restore ANY system stuff). 2am now and all that remains is to reinstall the volume button camera mod and translucent 3.4.4 Market app (both of which are pretty cool), and get my home-screen widgets re-setup. Oh, and by the way, my custom binary counter is still "NO", and says "SAMSUNG OFFICIAL". After all of this, I'm not sure why I even cared about the counter.... but in any event, it's still "0". Thanks XDA for all the stellar helpful posts and development materials.
Glad she's back up and running. A good thing to remember is, when your In CWM. You can plug your USB into phone/computer. Go to mounts and storage option in cwm and click mount USB storage. Then you can copy files between your SD and computer without having to do the SD card swap fiasco. Always remember to unmount SD from computer first. Hope this helps and good luck buddy!

I was pissed at myself for such a bonehead move (renaming an active framework file). After going through the whole process to bring the SR back from the dead, I was determined to get that freaking battery icon mod installed and risk it all again! Fortunately, it worked this time and all is good. With CWM now installed, I could have just flashed the UOT Kitchen zip... but was sure my Root Explorer process would work so did it again, but this time I "replaced" the active file instead of renaming the active apk.

Quite possibly, kinda. Are you rooted? If so, what recovery are you using? Most recoveries allow you to do this.
Why do u need to format within android? Why not just format from your pc?
Using SeanZ's SkyICS 4.2F r2 v6B ROM / XDA Premium
Boot into recovery, select Mounts and storage then format sdcard/ or emmc whichever one you are wanting to format

this is correct, or as an alternative u could either a) hook it up to a computer, mount it and format, or b) use adb, but I recommend either a or the method gs2usr suggested
im gonna post in this thread instead of making a new one since im having a similar issue.
In CW recovery it'll tell me it cant mount my sd-ext and as well give me an error when trying to install a custom rom from my emmc, so do i need to do a format of both of those in order to get a custom rom to finally install again?
i've had this error ever since i switched back to rogers stock 4.0.4 to try it out
I'm getting errors in cwm too. How can I do it in ADB? Macs don't do fat32 correctly and I don't have a Windows machine.

Figured it out. Please try this and see if it fixes your internal aswell.
So go ahead if you don't have it, ADB install a copy of Root Explorer.
Go into the emmc folder and give it read and write permissions.
Now, in the settings, under storage, it should let you reformat the disk again and you should be okay.
I have no idea what's up with CWR, but we were told not to use it anymore on our Kindles due to it messing with partitions. But this is how I just fixed my Skyrocket, just in time for the fireworks tonight.

[Q] Ooops - Tab's funked. Help!

P6800 running Zeta
I was browsing facebook the other night when... shaboom - everything froze. No biggie I thought, I'll just do a little reset (I was getting a few FCs here and there anyway lately) and I'll be good to go...
NOPE. It started bootlooping at the initial Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 screen. I'm able to enter CWM recovery and even wipe the cache and flash ZIP files, but when I try to wipe data/factory reset, wipe the Dalvik cache or restore a Nandroid backupI get a System Error. It doesn't look good.
Is there a way to fix my seemingly funked /system without losing all my internal SD card data (where my Titanium backups reside) or to recover it before a full Odin flash?
Just tried again - it reboots and goes into a loop when I try to wipe data and dalvik, and when I try to restore a previous backup it gives me "Error while restoring /system!"
Any help greatly appreciated before it becomes a $600 door stop
Do you dare to wipe the system folder and follow by flashing another ROM?

Do you mean via Odin? Will I lose the data on my internal SD card by doing that? Is there any way of mounting the device in its current state as external storage on my PC to copy all data before a wipe?
ZhenMing: I'm not sure what you mean, but as I wrote above I am not able to wipe the system folder.
yes you will loose your data... i can give you another advice... but do this one carefully... the reason why your device cant wipe any /system or /data is because the corrupted partition... you need to check it... follow the guide in this thread...
USE ONLY PART 3... follow the guide start from this para to check your device...
Code:
Now we are going to use e2fsck to check our new partitions for errors, but not only, it also fixes some erros and it will even for example create lost & found in /data
So let's go, we'll begin with /system. If you're still in the (parted) shell, use ctrl+c and type "adb shell", then issue the following :

Since you can go into cwm, you can mount your storage and then connect to PC to copy all you want.

But won't it downsize the int sd size, if OP tab still under warranty, better to get it fix by samsung for free and not lost any space.
Just reading the 1st post of the ZETA rom thread.
He says he is using stock Kernel.
He says every 5 lines, that you should full wipe...
without giving any sort of warning that it will eventually brick your device.

Tried that one, but it won't mount unfortunately. The external will no problem, but when I try with the internal it just... well it does nothing. It's a bummer cause all my most recent backups are on the internal. Any other way of retrieving my data short of extracting the chip?
Giving it back to Samsung sounds like the best option, but I'm worried cause it has a custom ROM and it's rooted. Anyone has experience doing that?
Also I thought full wipes were good, but you're saying they eventually brick the device? How come? I thought having a custom recovery meant it would be virtually impossible to brick my device... and the weird thing is that it happened during normal usage, not while flashing.
Anyway, my priority is obviously to get my tab working again, but retrieving my internal data is second highest. Isn't there a flashable ZIP that would copy the contents of the internal SD into an external SD card? Surely this has happened to someone before me?
Thanks for all the answers, really appreciated!

nope it wont... the 3rd stage on that thread command for just check and fix the corrupted partition... its like when we force boot windows... it will run on a little diagnostic software to check the drive... same concept.

Gotcha! Will try that one and post result - thanks!
how did your partition check go?
i'm annoyed that some partitions can be corrupted randomly even doing some mundane stuffs
even on stock ICS fw, i encountered DATA corruption by just deleting a contact
i guess you have softbrick..
here is what i did:
-flash stock Honeycomb firmware using Odin
-forced tablet into stock recovery mode
-wipe Cache/Data/Factory Reset
- reboot
when your tab is working again you could backup files from your internal EMMC and you could flash ROMS from there

Thanks for that. I haven't tried anything yet as I'm away till Weds, but I will then and let you know. So you're saying by flashing stock HC via Odin and wiping/resetting everything through stock recovery I won't lose my internal storage data?
that's what i experienced..but i could not guarantee that it will be the same for your device
i noticed that because old folder are not deleted when i rebooted, but i haven't checked if the system folders are cleared
to have a clean reflash i also format/sdcard on recovery..but don't do this on stocl ICS recovery since you might risk increasing the damage
try to format via odin the Honeycomb fw first [don't put PIT file neither enable Repartion, just normal flash]
then force it to enter recovery mode when it bootloops after reset
you might fix your device this way if it has softbrick
just resort to using PIT/repartition as your last option
Again I would not recommend repartition when tab still under warranty. Repartition the last resort only if the tab is without warranty after failing all other alternatives.

1)if you've made a backup that can be restored in twrp ,do it.
2)download a Custom ROM and flash It through twrp .only data ,cache and dalvik need to be cleared .you won't lose stuffs in internal storage including photos ,music.
3) if you cant find any custom roms then connect your phone to pc then,in twrp ->mount ->enable mtp.now you can access your storage, backup your files on PC ,then flash stock ROM and later restore .
Hope this helped.

Download that and a gapps for android 6 and also a supersu.zip. enable mtp like earlier and put them on your phone storage .now do a normal wipe in twrp wiping only data ,cache and dalvik(which is a normal factory reset)
And then install the ROM followed by gapps and supersu.
If you didnt wiped your internal storage you won't lose your files.
After booting up in file manager delete the folder called "0"(make sure none of your files that are personal are in there first) and your phone storage should be normal.

Looks like flashing that twrp messed up your default storage.
Just so you know you're the 8th person I ran into who had trouble with flashify. Looks like the only way is flashing stock ROM .but don't do it yet we'll look together for a less destructive option.
Can you try to flashing through Odin to see if it works.

You can either flash your stock ROM and be done with it or try and wait for a solution but since your device won't boot and you can't even copy your ROM files to phone I don't think there is much you can do(I did try some searching). Normally when this happens there a new folder called "0" (that behaves as a storage)from where you can transfer your rom file to flash but you say you can't do that here. And since after flashing twrp your phone didn't boot your system and directly booted recovery one would think your whole memory partition including system and internal storage got effed up.
So what you're trying to save may already be gone.you should be mad at your self for putting your trust in an app that has resulted in bricks for many users and flash the stock ROM IMO.
Sorry.
You should always make a backup when doing something that has anything to do with root /customization etc..

I would just bite the bullet, enter download mode and Odin the stock firmware. Get it over with and start fresh.

Are you sure you don't have your music and images backed up somewhere in the cloud or to your PC? Maybe backed up with Samsung Kies?

Are you 100% familiar with what you can attempt to do with TWRP and your device connected to your PC? When you select "MOUNT" in TWRP what boxes are checked?

Yeah, I have only small bits backed up.
The problem i have with twrp is that it needs to format my device for it to work, the same as the last time i did it. I used my other phone as a security measure but my brother managed to format that one 20 minutes before I screwed this one up, and he did that without my knowledge. So the situation is pretty bad here
Thanks
When you have TWRP open on your device and you are connected to your PC, does your PC recognize the device? If so, what does the device manager say it recognizes the device as? Also, do you have a USB-OTG? If so, you can try to mount OTG in TWRP, select OTG as your storage and perform a backup to your USB-OTG. If it works it.can save your butt.

It recognizes it as portable device, samsung galaxy s7 edge, as it should i think. I can't find a storage device right now to connect it to my phone
See if you can round up a USB-OTG device. That may be the obly thing that saves you for any type of backup. Hope it works

*[SOLVED]*!!! CANT MOUNT ANY PARTITION!!! no such file etc... HELPPPP

SEE PHOTOS BELOW PLEASE
Well long story short I bought an OTG adapter and a USB 64gb 3.1... Was fed up of slow read write speed on my s6.. So I kind of have 2 problems originating from 1..
My original issue was with my USB 3.0 drive write speeds of 2mb/'s So I formatted my USB using a "genius" app....
.....
***UPDATE***
WENT IN TO SHOW GUY FOR REPAIR HE BELIEVES I CORRUPTED/DAMAGED MY PHONES MEMORY..
ALL TO SAY I ENDED UP FORMATTING MY SDA1 PARTITION THINKING IT WAS MY USB!!!!!
No mount points found, apparently partitions aren't removable, but not present..
missing dev/block...userdata along with like many more (pic of my /dev contents below)

DEC 4TH UPDATE
Of course this wasn't enough already, but but now when I go to format data in TWRP, it says:
"Unable to update " " to wipe crypto key"
I only tried encrypting my phone 3 days before I wrote this thread was created.. And it did not work.. It would do encryption procedure but it let me use swipe, pattern, etc as passcode options... Usually it's like password with numbers n letters no??
So it didn't ask for decrypt passcode on boot and it didn't give an error message.. So I'm asking if there is a correlation or not..
-_____- simplest fix I had to flash pit via Odin like I stayed a week in this state of 0mb storage lol everything back to regular state no idea why I suddenly got encrypted with no password but whatever lets pray it behaves this time

I did carHd and it does the Aroma installer perfectly till it finished extracting files and ends with set metadata recursive some changes failed... But new files are visible in twrp (ONLY IF I KEEP S6 ON) always 0mb for partitions..

Unfortunately there is not much to do.
Try to back up the sdcard folder on the PC.
Then format the entire device to a new format (EXT3 for example) and then switch back to EXT4.
Then just install another rom by the same TWRP.
_____________
Maybe you can't backup any files because you won't mount to do that.
So I don't have any other option without being FORMAT AND LOSE all files.
And you still won't have a system/rom to install. Only using another phone to download some.

Enter in TWRP.
>> Wipe
>>Format Data
Write Yes
Select other format and ok
Reformat Data to EXT4
Will back mounted
Install a rom via OTG
