[Q] HELP... hosed up the SR - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Damn... got a bit too adventurous with the SR. Used the UOT Kitchen to make a simple battery/icon mod. Created the zip successfully.. but don't have CWM installed (running stock 3e Recovery). I was rooted running OTA 2.3.6. On my PC, I extracted the framework-res.apk from the zip and moved it to the SR. Moved it to /system first to fix permission (rw.r.r), then was going to move it to /system/framework folder. But being a complete azzclown, I thought I'd be cautious and rename my stock framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk.OEM. Didn't even have a chance to move the cooked up framework-res.apk to /system/framework folder cause as soon as I renamed the good framework-res.apk, I was in FC hell. F. Anyway, now I'm stuck at the "SAMSUNG" boot screen. What's the best course of action at this point?
I can get into stock 3e Recovery Mode... but hoping there's a way I can just somehow rename my good framework-res.apk.OEM back to framework-res.apk. (Reality tells me I can't). Anyway, I do have a Titanium Backup on my external SD. Just not sure what the best steps are from 3e Recovery: In 3e Recovery, do I "wipe data/factory reset" ? Do I need to "wipe cache partition", or will I just F it up more.

I m pretty sure this will help!
it's Sean's work!
When in 3 e recovery do a factory data reset (home button is enter)
7. now close and reopen odin
8.pull the battery on your phone and put it back into download mode
9.in the pda slot this time select clockwork recovery.tar
10.make sure your phone is in the com slot and hit flash
11. now reboot into clockwork also doing a factory data reset
12.clearing cache partition
13.go to advanced and clear dalvik cache
14. lastly go under mounts and storage and format system
15. now install any rom of choice .. your phone should be clean

Appdroid... thanks for the quick reply... appreciate the help. I was avoiding putting CWM on until official ICS OTA rolled out... was going to keep the OTA 2.3.6 and 3e Recovery until then. If I wipe data/factory reset from 3e Recovery, will this put framework-res.apk back in /system/framework? Or is my only option now is going to download mode and Odin flash (and trip the counter)...

It may work, try it ans see, i wont hurt anything, have you ever had cwm on your device at all?

I've never installed CWM... I rooted the stock 2.3.5 with SuperOneClick back in November, then took the OTA 2.3.6 update... and maintained my root. I just did the wipe data/factory reset.. that looks like it only wiped my user data and reformatted the /data partition. Now when I try to get back into Recovery Mode, I get a white triangle with a yellow exclamation in the middle.. and a green droid under that.. WTF?
OK... I can get back into 3e Recovery... but can confirm, the "wipe data/factory reset" only erases user data... it formats the /data and /cache partitions. When I reboot from Recovery, it still gets stuck at the 2nd SAMSUNG during boot. Do I need to Odin flash CWM, or can I somehow Odin flash the stock 2.3.5 with 3e Recovery, then re-root... or will flashing the stock ROM also trip the counter?

I believe kernal only trips counter, but who cares about the counter. Do what you gotta do to save her. You could prob just odin cwm, wipe and flash a rom

UPDATE: saved the Rocket!
Appdroid, cdshepherd: Thanks (and XDA Thanks buttons pressed as well!). Brought the SR back from the brink of brickmania. Nearly 5 hours of hell from one idiotic move (which was renaming "framework-res.apk" instead of simply overwriting it with the UOT Kitchen cooked-up mod). Anyway, used Sean's method to wipe phone and Odin flash CWM. Then the fun really started when it was time to flash a ROM via CWM.. and I had no ROMs on my sdcard! So pulled my external sd out of SR, put it in a MicroSD adapter... then discovered my desktop computer couldn't read my MicroSD! So, shoved the MicroSD adapter in my work laptop, it auto-added drivers so SD was recognized in the laptop. Then, back to the desktop and copied my ROM of choice (went with silver03wrx's Stock 2.3.6) onto a USB flash drive. Ported the USB flash drive over to the laptop and copied the Stock 2.3.6 ROM to the MicroSD. Finally, popped the external SD out of the adapter and back in the SR... booted into CWM recovery, and flashed the ROM from the external SD. Things began to become much more clear after my 3rd beer and the clock striking 1am!
Re-downloaded Visual VoiceMail, Superuser, and all my purchased apps. After reinstalling Root Explorer, I actually braved the UOT Kitchen fiasco again and flashed my Kitchen mods... all working to perfection. Titanium restored all my user apps+data (and yes, did NOT restore ANY system stuff). 2am now and all that remains is to reinstall the volume button camera mod and translucent 3.4.4 Market app (both of which are pretty cool), and get my home-screen widgets re-setup. Oh, and by the way, my custom binary counter is still "NO", and says "SAMSUNG OFFICIAL". After all of this, I'm not sure why I even cared about the counter.... but in any event, it's still "0". Thanks XDA for all the stellar helpful posts and development materials.

Glad she's back up and running. A good thing to remember is, when your In CWM. You can plug your USB into phone/computer. Go to mounts and storage option in cwm and click mount USB storage. Then you can copy files between your SD and computer without having to do the SD card swap fiasco. Always remember to unmount SD from computer first. Hope this helps and good luck buddy!
EDIT: don't forget to make a nandroid backup. It can easily save ya

I was pissed at myself for such a bonehead move (renaming an active framework file). After going through the whole process to bring the SR back from the dead, I was determined to get that freaking battery icon mod installed and risk it all again! Fortunately, it worked this time and all is good. With CWM now installed, I could have just flashed the UOT Kitchen zip... but was sure my Root Explorer process would work so did it again, but this time I "replaced" the active file instead of renaming the active apk.

coming from a G2, i have flashed a many a roms, did wipes, etc. my question is not toally newbish, but is newbish to the G2x.
i did the nvflash, installed the newer CWM, comfirmed that i have a recovery setup,etc...
now, from this point is anything different compared to doing it on the G2? i still scroll down to install update from SD card and stuff like that, and install the zip file and phone does all the work?

Yes, should be the same as any other phone with CWM. As long as the flashable .zip is made for CWM and your phone, you're good to go

Hey guys I'm coming from Windows mobile and I've never used CWM before. I rooted, installed CWM using Gunman's directions last night, and I downloaded CM7 to my extSD but I just don't know exactly what to do next. Is there a link someone could provide me or give me directions on the steps I need to take after I'm loaded into recovery?
Do I just wipe and then install zip from the folder? Thanks for the help. Sorry for being a newb.

So once you have recovery, you can now flash custom roms, kernals and themes.
1. Put the files you've downloaded into you ext SD
2. Reboot into recovery by pressing and holding power + vol down button til you see a red recovery screen
3. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
4. Wipe data/cache
5. Install .zip
6. Choose the ROM that you want to flash
7. Reboot
Edit: Also if you'd like to save your apps and their data, I suggest installing Titanium backup and make backups for your apps before you flash anything. And if all else fails, just reboot back to recovery and restore your nandroid backup
Somewhere I must have done something different, when I boot into CWM thru the button method I get the red recovery but it doesn't see my backups. When I use Rom Manager, and boot into recovery I get the orange/yellow recovery and it shows my backups. What I need to do to fix so the red recovery sees my backups?

Thanks a lot for the step-by-step list. For some reason when I navigate my folders in CWM the .zip files are not showing up. For CM7, then only file that it will allow me to install is the boot_animation.zip, which I'm sure won't boot the actual CM7 software. Oy ve. I'll keep messing around with it and see what I can figure out. Maybe I'll load a few other roms and see if those .zip files will show up when I navigate the folders.
Has anybody had this problem? Loading the boot.img file to a particular area on your ext_sd card (which was the one I set up when I installed CWM and nvidia or whatever it's called), and then once you try to find it it doesn't show up? Ugh. I'll try at it some more tonight and let you guys know what I find out.
I don't have to rename the boot.img file to update.sd.zip or anything do I? I should just be able to navigate to the folder and install the file, right?

You don't want to unpack the .zip file. The way you downloaded it should be the way you put it on your SD card. Do not rename anything inside the .zip.
So, take the cm7.zip file that you installed, whatever the exact name of it is, and copy that to your external sd card. When you're in recovery, pick the option to chose .zip from sd card, navigate to the .zip you just placed on the card, and it should ask you to install it.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you're confused about anything
If I were to flash cm7 is the newer red text bootloader OK to use?

Alright, I think I got it. On my old HD2 I used to have to unzip the deal when I would run it from my sd card. I think that's where I was confused. So I just download the .zip file, don't extract it at all, place it in the folder, and just run it straight from my phone. Thanks for your help. Hopefully now it will work.
EDIT: That worked. Thanks knuckelpuc. Woohoo, CM7 how I've missed you.

Is "Settings > Applications > Unknown sources" checked? If not, that's probably your problem.
If anything, you could always just Odin KC1 instead. As what everyone has been saying, KD1 has a faulty system partition.
As for the 8GB sd card, Samsung decided to cheap out on the newer phones. All of them come shipped with 8GB sd cards now.
I would recommend odining kc1 for a fresh start plus you will have root. Then grab cwm final by krylon 360. Once you have all that up and running make a backup of the 8gb sdcard on your pc and format it inside the phone ,replace all the files you want plus the update.zip. reboot into recovery and see if you can adjust the mounts. If so now try flashing a rom. Most roms need the ext4 converter to install properly should it require this it should be stated in the op of the rom you intend to install if not read through the post a little to see if anyone else has had similar issues or had to use the ext4 converter. Hope this helps and you get things going for you girls phone.
Edit: also do not use rom manager as it is not for our phone yet.

What do you mean it won't work? did you make sure to press the mount r/w button before pasting the file? If there is an extension in the filename, remove it. And you don't install the update.zip, you just place it in the root of your sd and leave it there.

Is your recovery file named "recovery.bin"? If it is, you have to rename it to just "recovery". It won't overwrite properly if you don't do it that way. Maybe you should try using another root explorer. I use Super Manager and it works perfectly. Be sure to enable root function and r/w mode though.
What do you mean that you tried to reinstall via update.zip?
EDIT: Seems like jager555 beat me to it.
Also, you could redownload the recovery file and update.zip. Who knows, something might've happened during the download process and messed it up.

thanks for all the tips, while using root explorer it was in r/w mode and the update.zip i use so CWM works, on my phone sometimes it will go into the stock recovery (blue in color) i got to the second option reinstall pakages and it will do a quick flash and boot into CWM recovery (yellowish in color) im now running CWM red on my phone so its not an issue but cannot seem to get it to work on the GF phone, i have tried everything i can think of and followed all the tips here and still cannot get it to work
leave your sd card and sim card out of the phone and odin to kc1. when it is complete, let the phone sit for 10-15 minutes. put the sd card in and then redownload krylons cwm final and move the two files to the right locations, making sure they are named properly and you OVERWRITE the files that are already there. once it is done, power off the phone, remove your sd card and do a full format. when this is done, put back the update.zip on the root of the sd card, put on the ext4 converter, as well as icbinb. these are the only 3 files you will need right now. start up the phone by pressing the 3 button combo and go into the orange cwm final. wipe cache and factory reset. check mounts, flash ext4 converter and then flash the rom and reboot. im not sure why your cache is the problem. you can try to odin to kb5 and see if that gives you different results. but if that doesnt work, i dont know what to tell you.

something definitely is weird with the clock work
i beleive even though its the same almost everything
some miscommunication happens with the skyrocket
it wont fix permissions right
and you run into issues where dalvik cache wont clear
or simply put it wont fully clear a partition thats been flash over and over and overand has become corrupt
never had clockwork act like this
i just ran it on my atrix and it took seriously 2 minutes when i chose fix permissions
and on our sky rocket. no matter what ,, its always instant

Awesome instructions and helped me in fixing some weird issues I had with my phone.
BTW, if you using OSX or Linux (as I do), you can do this with windows running inside vmware if you use the SGS Drivers from Softpedia.
I used this one 1.4.8 sgs drivers
So it's necessary to format the external sd too? Our would just internal be sufficient?

CWM can't see sdcard

A buddy suggested posting this here instead of dev 'cuz my problem seems possibly more general
When I Odin flash CWM 5.0.2.6, CWM is never able to see, mount, or format my sdcard.
I'm stuck at square one. Without being able to mount or see the sdcard I can't actually use CWM for anything. I've tried several combinations of repartitioning and formating the sdcard in CWM (can't format it since it wont mount), in Android and in Windows, but no matter what I try CWM can't access the sdcard. Otherwise, I have no indication that there's anything actually wrong with the sdcard.
I should say it's an _internal_ sdcard as I have no external, if this is relevant. Any help is appreciated.
I'm using CWM 5.0.2.6 as there doesnt seem to be a newer one floating around (that's Odin flashable anyway)

Used your method, got 5.0.2.7 on there, but same problem/behavior ;(
edit, almost same thing if I try to install the rom from recovery app, was timing out after it rebooted, but eventually started installing the ROM. so, it worked, though I still don't trust CWM >_<
thanks for the input

Evo Shift Problem

Hello XDA Developers,
First off let me say thank you for all the information always found on your forums, however I've run into a snag with my phone (HTC EVO Shift 4g) and need some help. I was doing a factory reset of my device using the tool in the Clockwork Mod Recovery (v5.0.2.0) and I went to wipe some additional data off my SD card, and inadvertently chose to format the /system, and pretty much every directory in the storage menu, which I later realized I probably shouldn't have done as now I can't get my phone to boot. Where the snag falls into here, I had made a backup of all my data on my SD card but have misplaced my full backup made through the clockwork mod. When I try booting my phone it simply comes up with the white boot screen with the "htc" logo in green. I have tried about everything I could possibly think of to get my shift working again, since it won't fully boot, the only option I've been able to try have been trying to get a ROM to install from a .zip, but I keep running into errors, did I manage to wipe out some sort of critical data when I did those formats?? Any help you guys can offer me will be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for your expertise and input on this.
NOTE: I have tried to download one of the STOCK RUU's that you guys have posted, I have yet to find one that will actually download or resolve my issue!
Sounds like you wiped and formatted everything.. Including your sd card.
Download a ROM to your pc - In clockwork go to mounts and storage - plug your phone into your pc and select mount usb. Transfer the ROM onto your sd card, unmounted your sd, wipe then flash.

Alright man all that happened was when you hit format system, you wiped the ROM from the phone, so download any ROM of choice go into recovery then mount as a storage device and transfer the ROM to the SD card, unmount then format system, data, cache and dalvik cache and flash the ROM and you will be fine

Ok but does anyone have a stock RUU Rom I can download to do this? I'd kind of like to revert to stock in this process and I can't find one that works properly, thanks!

Can you boot into clock work recovery? That's all you need.
