Directions to find "allow unknown sources" for apps? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm attempting to set up TiBU and it's requesting I check off the "unknown sources" box under the apps menu in settings. I looked, and it's not there. Anyone know where to make this selection?
Thanks!

Its under the security tab in settings...scroll down

[Q] I need help with accessing 3rd party apps on rooted atrix 4g

I rooted my atrix with gingerbreak my dads phone and mine, and I went to mobiles24.com to download a app and then it downloaded it and I went to install the app and it says: This application comes from an unknown source, and for your security only applications from trusted sources can be installed. So Im not understanding why I can't download 3rd party apps and I do have my allow mock locations setting on please help.
In the same menu as allow mock locations there is an option about untrusted sources. If you enable that it will work.
I had the same problem and spent days finding the anser.
Hope this helps.

How to get unknown source option in under 1 min

I decided to start a thread on this after trying what gmanunited posted in another thread. It was posted in Post your sideloading update from today! thread.
Due to mms problems of not being able to send or recieve, Use at your own risk! Trying to correct the problem now.

The following are instructions that I have come up with to unlock the "Unknown Sources" option on non rooted Android phones that do not have the option available. By unlocking this option you will now have the ability to install non "Android Market" applications such as "TeamViewer" and more
~Warning~
This was performed in a HTC Inspire 4G so results may vary for each phone
THIS PROCESS WILL RESET YOUR CONFIGURED SETTINGS TO THE DEFAULT (Display, Ringtone, Wallpaper, etc.) BUT DO NOT WORRY BECAUSE IT ISN'T PERMANENT. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS RECONFIGURE IT AND ITS WORTH IT IF YOU ARE UNLOCKING THE OPTION "Unknown Sources"
1. Go To Your "Settings"
2. Go To "Applications"
3. Go To "Manage applications"
4. Go To The "All" Tab (or any tab that will display all your apps)
5. Find The Applications "Customization Settings Provider"
6. Click On "Clear data"
7. Go Back To "All" Tab (or any tab that will display all your applications)
8. Find The Program "Settings"
9. Click On "Clear data"
Finished
If You Go Back To "Applications" You Will Now Have The Option To Enable "Unknown Sources"
If It Worked For You Please Submit "Yes" in the poll. If it didn't please submit "No" in the poll. I would also be glad if you submitted a reply to the thread to keep it alive.

Is anyone else unable to send/receive mms or texting? Really want to try this but afraid I'll disrupt some data setting.

For those curiouse if this is going to break your MMS or Calls or Data, dont worrie. All this does is clear a "Development Setting" to hide Unknown Resources tab. However you may have to renter some info, such as APNs or Voicemail.

After performing the above I also cannot send MMS. SMS is ok.

I'm super interested in this thread.
The only reason I'm wanting to root my phone is to access more apps. I'm cool with the stock rom and radio, and I will never change to another network. I bet there are a lot of folks in the same boat with me. Maybe someone could develop an app that resets critical AT&T settings after performing gamanunited's steps to enable the unknown sources tab. Then if someone could develop something like crudscraper to get rid of the At&T bloatware, we'd really be in business.
I am receiving a new HTC Inspire form AT&T Monday or Tuesday.
Do you think the phone will already include this sideloading update.
good question, let us know
Will do.

Should be here Mon-Tues.
Had a friend recently purchase an inspire about 5 days ago. Unknown sources was NOT an option.

Any fix for mms yet?

For those who just want to be able to sideload apps, there is a safer way of doing it. But it requires the use of a rooted phone...maybe a friends phone who can loan to you long enough to setup your Google account. You need to setup a specific Google account and sign into it on a rooted phone. Allow it to backup all settings and apps...make sure to install a few non-market apps. Once finished, hard reset your Inspire so that it will set up again like a new phone and sign into the saved Google account. It should restore all system settings and market apps and you will be able to sideload apps. It won't give you the "Unknown sources" checkbox but it will allow you to install non-market apps.
It might help to use an HTC Sense-based rooted phone.
Cheerio
No You don't Need that. All you need is Super One Click and choose the enable Unknown Sources tab. You will not have the check box but you will be able to add 3rd party applications.
This thread has fail written all over it lol

That requires rooting. The process I explained does not required your Inspire to be rooted. You just need to use a rooted phone to make this work.
Superone Click Does not really root the phone. The phones image is protected...This only gives you temporary root which in turns lets you enable Unknown Sources. It works I have been using it for Months. I just wanted to see the Unknown Sources Tab with this fix.
I used SuperOneClick before AT&T pushed me the update. It does not root and it works. No side effects neither. Once you download it you can do it in two minutes then just restart.

Just tried this. Got unknown sources. No HTC wallpaper until restart. SMS works MMS does not. Don't need to send pics that often anyway.
It seems ridiculous....
that you have to lose MMS capability in order download non market apps even though AT&T has an update for this.
So no one has found an apn that will restore mms yet? My wife is angry with me for killing her mms......

Google requests

Besides not loading Google Apps like Google Reader, is there anyway to stop the annoying "Google needs permission" request that are constantly popping up. I keep saying no but "apparently, no doesn't mean no" with Google.

If you go under the System Settings, then under security, uncheck "Verify Apps"
Thanks. I am sure they will still datamine but what I don't know won't hurt me,..LOL.
Hour later...still getting Permission Requested.
You did uncheck the option that "wingcook" posted? Is this happening when you restore apps via tibu or when installing via GPlay?
I know this works for TB. With it unchecked, I don't get any warning from TB or from play store.

Yeppers, I unchecked it. I do tibu. Since it was Google + and Google Reader making the requests and I don't use them, I uninstalled them. Hopefully, problem solved.

[Q] is there a way preventing Facebook app using GPS?

HI guys
Ive noticed that fb mobile app always uses GPS to probe my location when i run the app, thats kinda disturbing. Is there a way to configure the app or do something to prevent it from turning on GPS? I tried to revoke its permission to use location services with another app but fb crashes.. Any tips are much appreciated.
Try this:
Goto 'Settings - Account - App Settings - Messenger Location Services" and turn it off.

no, this only turns the location report in the chat ("sent from near location x,y,z..").

this means turning GPS completely off, not only for facebook.
Without some sort of hack/app it is not possible clearly. Basically FB is using you GPS position for their private needs?
i dont know, but you can look at facebooks app permission and see it usses permission to access your call logs and alter them. if thats not private use, i dont know what is.
same probleme here ,, Turning GPS completly is the best solution
Install any security app form play store like LBE PRIVACY GUARD. You can block a specific app from using GPS through these applications since android platform does not allow settings for specific apps for using/not using GPS!
NOTE: NEEDS ROOT FOR THIS ACTION TO WORK!
Go to fb setting and turn of the location sharing.
Plus u can simply switch off the gps from the notification but then still it shares the location using web access point.
So u need both the things to xompletely shut the location thing...

edit

Tried ticking off the box about nearby friends?

yes. still searches for gps. i think ive found a solution, flashed a new rom with Xposed framework (first time i see this) and theres an option to controll app settings, one of the options was permissions, revoked location permissions and it seems the app is still working and not crashing (unlike the first try to revoke these permissions with another application) and does not uses the gps. yay!!

Developer Options missing!!!

I just unpack my FTV put in my account info, watch the intro-video
when to settings, system, but I can't find the option "Developer", so I can't Toggle “ON” the “ADB Debugging”
.by the time it tock me to look around the system, the system has auto update to v510058520
anyone else at that version?
I'm still at 55620, but I blocked my firetv from checking the update server (I think).
Hopefully isn't amazon hiding it to disable sideloading of apps. I would sell mine if they do that.
Are you sure you're looking in the right spot? My firetv auto-updated, but the option is still available.
1.From the main (Launcher) screen of Amazon Fire TV, select Settings.
2.Select System > Developer Options.
3.Select ADB Debugging.
Interesting.. I blocked mines from updating.. If it works... So still on original firmware
