Hello,
Before start working on the kernel 3.0 branch, I think we should have a good kernel for CM10A4 because 3.0 would take a while. So, I created this kernel.
Release:
Final - Jan 2, 2013
This is the final release. Only minor optimization are included. Dhiru already patched all necessary code to his kernel. I though about backporting DSSCOMP and ION but it seems not worth it. From now on I'll focus on the 3.0 branch. Happy new year to all.
R1 - Dec 28, 2012
Overclock to 1.35GHz but boot at stock (Vurrut)
No signal fixed (loSconosciuto)
Noop, CFQ, SIO schedulers
Various governors
Based on Dhiru CM10 kernel
How to flash:
- Download it to your storage
- Reboot to recovery
- Flash it as a zip file.
How to restore to stock:
Download and flash "kernel-cm-10-A4-restore.zip" from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029921
Disclaimer:
As always, It is your responsibility to use this. I wouldn't take any blame.
All credits are given to:
- Dhiru
- Vurrut
- XDA_Bam
- loSconosciuto
- Adi_Pat
- UtterChaos
kool will give it a try
Features??
Thanks. But please post details such as governors and IO schedulers, boot @ 1GHz etc.
now we have 3 devs working on kernel 3.0 ))really nicee
:good:
Guys, try it out. If you don't like it, you can reverse to standard CM10A4 anytime.
Thanks for this crackerizer. I Was just recently thinking about the lack of an overclock kernel for Alpha 4 and you came up with this. Great job! :highfive:
Just the type of steriods needed right now
Thanks bro
Flashing it right away
Edit: kernel works properly, no issues yet.
rom is now much smother
Will report battery after 2-3 cycles.

1200MHz - very unstable
When I was on bam kernel (gingerbread), my phone was very stable (OC 1200), no random reboots or something like that.
On this kernel - 5min and 3 reboots and a lot of FCs :/
Edit:
1100MHz = the same problems like on 1200 and 1300

For me it's quite the opposite. On Bam Kernel or Vurrut my phone use to lock up as soon as OC applied to 1.35GHZ. Now it stays without any problem.
Ha thanks for the super team of developers. Now the room is smoother than ever(until 3.0)thanks to the overclock and stuff. Plus great there is the signal fix with it.

Mine running at 1.35Ghz without any problem (the phone is a little hotter than other speed). I do a lot of gaming (most are 3D).
Is your phone stable at stock speed? I think some phones may not be able to overclock.

Rom is definitely smoother and with OC games lag way less....
But got one feedback on the camera. Image preview is very much distorted.Too many flickers.(during video recodring too)
Never had this issue in the stock kernel or loSconosciuto's signal fix kernel.
can you please look into the issue ? and can someone else confirm this ?

This is a bug for CM10. I think it will be fixed when kernel 3.0 is ready.
Anyway, The recorded video is ok. :good:

No, this kernel is unstable even on 1000MHz
and,
as I said, on gingerbread 1200MHz (BAM kernel) was very stable, without any FCs and reboots, so my phone is able to OC.

If its unstable don't use it. U might risk the chances of burning your chip .
OC is stable for me. Works fine.

It depends on the hardware you have, try a different OC or roll back.

Well, so far, we don't have a separate forum for Galaxy R (i9103) so I need to put in here...
OK, the kernel is ready. I have tested it using Quadrant benchmark, CF-Bench and continuous playing of asphalt6 & dungeon hunter 2 for hours. Smooth and without causing much heat
Below are the details of the kernel:
Features
=======
- For Samsung Galaxy R (i9103) only
- Based on Samsung open source, kernel version 2.6.36.3
- Added new frequencies: 1200 & 1300Mhz
- Setting of max 1300Mhz through SetCPU
- All stock frequencies are untouched: 216-1000Mhz
- Expose the voltage settings to be set through SetCPU
- Limit the boot up frequencies to be 216-1000 to avoid unstable boot up
- Simple IO Scheduler
- 2.6.36.4 patches
- Speed up framebuffer copy
- memory copy macros and functions fine tune
- Misc. kernel fixes
- Rooted (embedded su & Superuser.apk)

Q & A
=====
Q: How to flash the kernel
A: Just flash the .tar file using Odin3 PDA (the same as flashing most of Samsung's android phone). Easily search xda forum for Odin3 and how to use it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262272)
Q: Will it delete all my applications, settings or files?
A: No. (should be..) It is a kernel, not ROM, therefore, nothing would be deleted
Q: What version of ROM is supported?
A: Kernel version is 2.6.36.3, it is proved to work on 2.3.4/2.3.5/2.3.6 ROM
Q: I don't need overclock (OC), can you make a non-overclock kernel?
A: The kernel itself supports max. of 1300Mhz. It doesn't mean that you need to operate in such frequencies. You can freely set your frequencies using SetCPU (for example, you can set 216/216 when screen off, and 216/1000). In such case, no OC will occur
Q: Will I be rooted after flashing this kernel?
A: Yes. I have modified the kernel to make it embedded with su & Superuser.apk
Q: How stable is OC? Will the battery drain fast? Will the phone get hot?
A: For 1200Mhz, it is quite stable. For 1300Mhz, I have experienced 1 program FC. Apart from that, I am using 216-1300Mhz for daily use and it is quite stable. Tested with asphalt6 and dungeon hunter 2 for over an hour, no FC occurs. Also, the battery doesn't feel hot (it is the advantage of tegra2 CPU )
Q: How can I revert back to the stock kernel?
A: If you have flashed CWM, and you have backup before you flash this kernel, you can choose (advance restore) to restore only the boot.img. Alternative method is to download the rooted stock kernel here (flash through Odin3 PDA): http://www.mediafire.com/?guhb64qy3h6sang
*** I will keep updating this kernel to make it better and better ***
*** Finally, flash at your own risk ***
=====================================================================
From the Samsung Open Source web site, I have downloaded the kernel source for i9103 and made modifications to it. It is good that this phone is equipped with Tegra2 CPU such that overclocking will not cause much heat problem and I can successfully overclocked to 1.3GHz
Below are some screen shots and I will release the kernel later today as I am still testing the new kernel.
For the first version, I will add in rooting (su+superuser.apk), SIO Scheduler, 2.6.36.4 patches and some minor kernel fixes. Stay tuned
(Quadrant score is: 4275)

Great news, glad to see that there is some dev for I9103!
Do you have in mind ICS cooking?
And this mod kernel is for what version? 2.3.4? 2.3.5 or 2.3.6?
Good news!!! I'm very happy with the normal CPU speed but it's good to see any developers for this device!!

Well, for ICS, I have downloaded the source code (haven't compiled yet...). I think porting to ICS ROM will not be too easy ... as I lack all those hardware libraries and experiences. Let's wait ICS for Galaxy S2 and see how far we can reach...
This kernel is proved to work in 2.3.4 and 2.3.5. Should also be ok for 2.3.6
thats perfect then! I'm in 2.3.4 stock with rooted kernel, I think if you provide us a rooted kernel with optional OC that would be awesome , thanks!
Great news, thanks!
So great!!! Congratulations for your work ardatdat, could you confirm the ROM version? 2.3.4/2.3.5...
Wow,thats amazing man *-*
We are waiting impatiently your kernel
Thank you!!!

G R E A T !!!!!
Ps.: why on XDA do not exist a subforum dedicated to Galaxy R?
Thank you! I flashed it and works great. Although there isn't anything this phone was slow at, so only the various benchmark apps tell me it is actually faster!
Thanks for the Root kernel with OC.
Appreciate it alot.
1 step forward to get custom roms.
Can you also share which CWM you used and how ??
Thanks alot.
PS : Does this kernal work with ANY stock rom for 9103 ?

Try some Live wallpaper and Gallery widget slideshow, and you will notice lag, but I don't think that's related to CPU clock. Not to mention that color palette is scaled down to 65000 colors (just look at the Microbes Live Wallpaper).

There is a CWM version 4.0.0.2 that works with the phone. I just found (and flashed) today myself.
I found it at a Chinese forum and at a Spanish forum. Downloaded from both and had the same flashable tar (checked with diff), though different apks (which I didn't install anyway).
Try it from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q33VEDF0
I am terribly sorry but I can't find from which forum I originally got this link. It isn't mine work of course.
After flashing with ODIN (the same way you flashed the rooted kernel), to enter into recovery turn on the phone and while it is on the Galaxy R boot screen, press voulme up and home together. Do not press them before powering on because your phone won't turn on, instead it may block and you will have to remove the battery for some seconds.

Not yet but i will make a patch or add one soon.. still testing, what kernel do you guys use the most or prefer?
oooo hardware acceleration, sexy!
do other roms offer this feature?
Sweet... another ROM Dev!
The biggest props right now go to Roach's Kernel, Blades and co haven't had a source release since August, I dont know what Roach has had over them during the interm time, but it seems to be pretty damn decent if i say so myself... Oh, and the TF201 (Transformer Prime) Kernel Source is out, so hopefully someone will tear it down and see what can be ported over to our TF101 (Transformer)!
And speaking of Roach's Kernel (which sadly lacks UV aka Undervolding to save power), look into the dual core optimized OC daemon and OC Daemon control panel! Best low level OC tool ever... Talk about Mhz speed scaling!
EDIT: yes, most other ROM's support GPU UI Acceleration

Cool thanks I'll try that, and thanks for the welcome. Most of my work is over on the sensation forum but I'll be making some for the Galaxy S2 also. I've mainly made this just for a good stock ROM that's fast and reliable. So I hope you guys like it. Requests and feedback are welcome.

Maybe still many people are asking themselves if they can use Optimus 3DMax ROMs with Kernels for Optimus 3D. Here I show you a picture of my tests with “AcuraTeam_3D_MAX_V1” and “The Promethius Project V1.3” ROMs and 3 different Kernels:
1. 1-V1-Maximo (beta3)
2. Titan V0.6+
3. Promethius V1.3+
4. Maximo Speed V2 1208MHz
Promethius 1.4+, 1.5+ and 1.4.5 are not included since they give me lock in twlan_wq lock and 48% CPU constant load till reboot. 1-V1-Maximo (beta1) and 1-V1-Maximo (beta2) give constant pvr_workqueue CPU usage around 1-5% and that give lower scores in benches and sometimes and *wakelock* with battery drain. For me these are the most stable Kernels.
I use V21E Baseband
The combination between AcuraTeam_3D_MAX_V1 ROM and Promethius V1.3+ give me best scores and long battery life.
All scores are made by taking the highest score from 5 consecutive runs.
CPU set on performance/cfq
FastReboot before the first test.

EDIT:
Added Maximo Speed V2 1208MHz kernel, and AcuraTeam_3D_MAX_V3.1 ROM
As you see there is no more that 1-5% difference between the ROM/KERNEL combinations... so all difference you FEEL is a nice placebo "effect". Nonplacebo is that AcuraTeam_3D_MAX_V3.1/Maximo Speed V2 1208MHz has very long battery life when set to 1008/200MHz and vr I/O Scheduler and less lockups of my WIFI - probably more voltage for WIFI or changed sleep sequence or s.t. else

AcuraTeam Rom with Promethius V1.3+ Kernel have good @1080p and 3D 720p recording - no glitches. For Maximo and Titan V0.6+ i have not test.
I have test the 1.4+ ,1.5 but as they were giving me problems I have not record these scores but there was not s.t. I should remember or striking.
Franzferdinan51 - I just install it over “The Promethius Project V1.3” with CWM. All programs and data stay there. I change it back to “The Promethius Project V1.3” by mistake and then again to “AcuraTeam_3D_MAX_V1” and still was all OK. Of course I took full backup on my system before i did that all.
Okay thank you I noticed xda don't have a 3D Max forum where can I find 3Dmax roms

This Kernel is only compatible with ROMS running on the VRALG1 Base!
Do not use this kernel on any base newer than that!
This Kernel is NOT compatible with the latest version of CleanROM!
Features
CPU Overclockable to 1.99 GHZ (vs 1.5GHZ stock).
CPU Underclockable to 192MHZ (vs 384MHZ stock).
The CPU comes clocked at normal Samsung specs of 384MHZ low and 1.5GHZ high. You will need an application like System Tuner or Set CPU to overlcock it. This can also be modified by advanced users in the init.rc but is not recommended or supported. See first two blocks of init.rc for details.
GPU Overclocked at 300/500 MHZ
Under-volted just a few milli-volts to help save battery.
There are no fancy governors or other such things. Its a modified stock kernel, plain and simple.
This kernel should be compatible with any VRAGL1 based ROM such as (of course) CleanROM and Nosympathy's stock rooted base. Good chance it will work well with Team Synergy's ROM too but I have not tested that ROM but its a VRALG1 Based ROM.
If your ROM has non Samsung Boot Animation you will more than likely loose it!
Its been said that flashing a kernel can cause IMIE loss. I have not seen it myself but I guess its possible.
This kernel will NOT work with any AOSP, AOKP, CM9, CM10, etc based ROMS! If the ROM is not a based on official Verizon VRAGL1 ROM then dont flash this kernel!
Instructions
Must have an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER! No exceptions!
Should make a complete Nandroid back up before flashing!
Copy ROM to storage and flash
Use your favorite CPU controller app to set the speeds.
WARNING!
Overclocking can permanently ruin your device. I mean totally kill it! You accept this fact upon downloading the kernel and or source!
I cannot and will not take any responsibility for what this kernel does to your device!
Not all devices can maintain the same level of overclocking!
Just because the kernel can clock to 1.89 does not mean YOUR device can!
Be smart and start off low and bring upt the speed gradually just like O/C'ing a desktop CPU!
To return to what you had before this... Restore your Nandroid back up! You did make that back up, right?
Changes in this version
9/5/12 - Version 1.2
Added: O/C to 1.99
Possibly Fixed: O/C not OC'ing on some devices
Possibly Fixed: gsiff_daemon fix?
Added: Optimaztions to file system
THANKS!
Thanks to dsb9938 for helping me get my box set up and to sbryan12144 for schooling me on the edits to make. Without their help I would still be looking at an empty Ubuntu desktop wondering where to go!
This Kernel is only compatible with ROMS running on the VRALG1 Base!
Do not use this kernel on any base newer than that!
This Kernel is NOT compatible with the latest version of CleanROM!

Benchmarks dont matter! But your going to ask anyways so I already ran the three most popular benchmarks and the results are below. Your device and ROM set up may NOT acheive these benchmarks.
All testing was done on a fresh install of CleanROM 2.0 SP1 with no background sync 1.89GHZ and Ondemand governor.
These benchmarks are the best of 3 or 4 runs each. They didint vary too much from this except Linpack. That thing is all over the place.
Do not expect to get these scores!
Next your going to ask me how the battery life is. Being a new kernel it doesnt have as much metering under its belt so you I will need your input on what you see. Obvisouly if you clock it up high you will see a decrease in battery life. Let me know what you are seeing.

MD5's posted....
As stated in OP...
This kernel is based of the Samsung stock kernel for the Verizon based SGS3. The kernel does not deviate from the stock kernel except as noted below...

In other words... No. Thats a Ramdisk edit anyways and not a kernel edit if I am not mistaken, no?

Its all good. I will post modified RAM disk that supports non Samsung boot animations later on... I just want to get a feel right now for the kernel and how it works out for people.
EDIT: But you do bring up a good point... I will post in the OP that you will loose custom boot ani's.
Nice work Scott, first kernel for the Verizon gs3 that under clocks the cpu!
Does it include a fast charge option??
Thanks again for your work! :good:

No fast charge. It only modifies the stock samsung speeds of CPU, GPU and Voltage.
No other changes.
CPU Underclock to 192MHZ may need some tweaking. But I am pretty sure I know what it is... Seems to stick more at 384 than 192.

I'm using CPU master and after clicking apply like 10 times it stuck at 192.
Guys keep in mind that by flashing a custom kernel you risk losing your IMEI number. This can happen at any time while running it, not just the act of flashing. It can be restored (even without a backup) but there's a good chance you'll be stuck in roaming afterwards. I've seen several people ask how to get out of roaming but they never receive concrete responses.
Several people have claimed this can only occur on AOSP roms/kernels, but this is false. I've heard reports of people losing IMEI on beans rom using imo's custom kernel.
Good job man

Nah, its sticking when you apply, but the thermald config may need some tweaking because it pushes it back up. So it doesnt seem like its sticking but its but then it gets overwritten.

Dont stress it... He said what he had to say. Maybe he is right. I put in the OP so...
Lets get to some feedback on the kernel itself...
This thing is lightning fast and has same battery life as stock. Been hammering on it all night

About to flash will report back
originally built this for hercules, but wanted to share it with you guys
camera is a bit laggy btw, trying to find out what is causing it
Rotation is borked :\
likely you will have to flash rotation fix, Do SR have one ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100105
try this
flashed your kernel on cm 10.1 preview 2 and phone is not doing anything after samsung boot logo. dark screen :crying:

for some reason the rotation fix doesn't work on 4.2
Will try to look into it. I'm a fish out of water when it comes to rotation bs

stuck
Governor: ondemand
ROM: cm 10.1 preview 2
Overclocking: stuck at 1.9
Undervolt: don't mess with that
Everytime i try to underclock or go to 1.5 ghz it just shoots back up to max. Other than that great job
1.83ghz overclock stable voltage
Love this kernel but just cant stay stable on 1.83ghz, I heard that this clock likes a specific voltage on this forum, anyone know what voltage it works best at? I tried stepping it down a little and still kept freezing

There are 2 other 4.2.2 kernels. You decided to choose a 4.2.2 kernel that is in beta, and released 3 months ago. Mind trying Marla or Moretz?

There are much newer builds of this kernel in the hercules forum. You could flash those, just you might have rotation issues if you don't keep the skyrocket rotation files (PM me for more info).
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Ill try the hercules ones, mortez I don't think can go to 1.83ghz, that is really pushing it for the phone didn't expect it to be doable when it did work though I did see a performance gain from 1.78ghz and not a lot of heat being generated either, had it stable overvolted 1375mv for a little to then it died on me in a 3d game -_-
