3. Enable connecting device: You will need to enter the MAC address and name of your connecting computer. You can name it whatever you want; in OS X, the MAC address can be found in WiFi > Network Preferences > Advanced > Hardware.
4. Connect to FoxFi on your computer.
DONE!

From what I'm aware, Verizon still charges a monthly fee for tethering. I could be wrong, though.

Tethering is free on Verizon LTE phones. Of coure it will use data from your data plan. Look at Settings->Wireless and network->More Settings->Mobile Hotspot.
You can thank Google's "Open Access" provision when the C Block was being auctioned off.

I thought the ruling in that tethering case was they couldn't charge customers that are on the new share everything plan and thru couldn't block tethering apps.

It was explained to me that "grandfathered unlimited accounts" could be charged the $30 tethering mobile hotspot fee. All new shared plans cannot be charged per court decision.

so for those of us on the unlimited plan, is there a way to disable the " verizon hotspot" from kicking in every time we try to use a 3rd party hotspot provider?
i am running jellybean 4.1.1 and just rooted my phone today and installed titanium pro. yet i can't seem to find anything in there to disable the verizon hotspot from being the primary hotspot app.

Correct. I still have an unlimited plan from VZ and would be charged for WiFi Hot spot unless i am rooted or can get my FoxFi work around going. Will try this later and hope it works.

There are tons of different roms that have the hotspot baked into it, I used Beans Build 7, But also if you look in the theme and apps section TrevE wifi tether mod works with 4.1.1.:good:

Has anyone tried this with the recent christmas jb update to Razr/Razr Maxx ? I have the jb update downloaded, but have been hesitant to install because of the broken jb issue.

Did all that and it worked. (kind of, I think)
Then closed FoxFi again.
Reopened FoxFi and the VZ Mobile Hotspot still continues to pop up. When the toggle is "ON", i can connect with my laptop. When I toggle it "OFF" so VZ Hotspot closes, and only FoxFi is open, the connection quits.
When I just open FoxFi and I can get a connection, the VZ Hotspot does not mention anything about a subscription (it only does when you toggle it off/on). Does this mean I am not being charged for it?
Unlimited data accounts are unlimited data for ONE device. A laptop or tablet constitutes another device using the data so there still allowed to charge a tethering fee

Not to be glib, but am I missing something here? I've been using FoxFi for over a year and a half and have never had any extra charges from VW. Install the app, set up a password, turn it on, good to go. No extra steps at all.
Foxfi did not work with my Gnex that was running android 4.1.1, but my S3 that I just picked up about a week ago is working fine. I am using it now to post this comment. In the description of the app it says will not work on "most" phone with Android 4.1. I am also on the unlimited plan and don't plan on giving it up lol.

Since I installed the 2.3.4 leak the Verizon Mobile Hotspot app is no longer working. I am getting the following message when I attempt to activate the hotspot:
"If you would like to subscribe to Mobile Hotspot/Mobile Broadband Connect, call....."
I actually have the tethering option on my plan (company phone). I'm not sure if this is a problem with the leak, or Verizon has something messed up on their end.
Anybody else having issues?

That's because the lonnnnnnnnng extended trial period is over now.
You probably have the promotional hotspot feature expired. I called today to add it and it was 30 bux for the unlimited tethering feature. I had to tell them to look again 3 times and they finally found it.
I have the 2.3.4 leak and am using the built in hotspot feature without a hitch. I got the same message this morning prior to having them add the 4g hotspot feature (not the promotional hotspot)
quick question for tethering (undetected). I have read it might be detected based off of the apn name used. So what is the apn settings used for remaining "undetected". I currently have a jailbroken iPhone 3g that I will be retiring that I do this with now.
Best bet is to root and then get the wireless tether for root users app.

Hmm, I don't now if that's true or not and if you had to use a different APN based on plan...Then I imagine if you didn't have that plan, connecting to that APN wouldn't work And if one proxy server can detect tethering then why wouldn't all of them do so?
I think I would look into that "tether guard" app and I would also use a method through the debugging mode of the phone.

ok, so on my tmo plan i got a deal where if i got the 5gb plan for 30 a month they threw in free tethering and free wifi calling
my question is, with using rooted roms, do i need to have those on my plan? in other words, if i drop my data plan to 2gb a month i loose the free wifi and tethering but i though or read somewhere that using a rooted rom i have those functions anyway
wifi calling is a free utility with this phone I thought (stock or not, doesn't matter) the tether is something they are cracking down on, ways around it with root and something to do with chrome look in the threads around about tethering stopped.

The last I heard (as recently as January, when I had it turned on for my account), they didn't charge for it. If they've changed, it should be called "unlimited Wi-Fi Calling" instead of "free". In either event, you can use it if you have the app in your ROM; the only difference is whether the minutes get charged against your monthly allotment or not.
Being rooted has no effect on the T-Mobile enforcement of your Terms of Service that forbid you to use tethering without a tethering plan. They are apparently now detecting some PC browser user agent strings (reportedly Internet Explorer and Chrome, but not Firefox, for some reason) and blocking access via those browsers by redirecting you to an advertisement for their tethering plan. If you're doing non-browser things (ssh, email, etc.), they probably won't detect that you're tethering. It's reported that changing the browser's user agent string to something other than the default circumvents the T-Mobile detection, although if you use an android browser string, naturally you'll end up on mostly mobile versions of the sites you visit. It's also likely that if you're using a VPN and proxy, that will also prevent their detection of your tethering.
I'm still using 2.2.2 stock. When I connect via WiFi, a banner pops up stating calling on WiFi counts against your normal minutes. In other words, your call plan minutes apply with either their towers or WiFi. Makes some sense, as you have to use their Call Manager/Session Manager to route the call...
Just port your number to Google Voice and use Groove IP or Talkatone, currently the top VoIP apps for Android.

that makes the most sense and i have also read that about changing the user agent string. but if im tethering an android tablet would there be anything to change? that was my goal with wifi tethering, use my phone as a hotspot for my tablet (when i finally get one)

T-Mobile is cracking down lately. Regardless of what ROM you are running, if you drop your free tethering plan, you are going to have to screw around with changing the User Agent on your laptop/tablet to avoid being blocked.
I use my phone for tethering with the tablet. You'll use the 5gb once you start doin it. They charge for the tethering plan now, so you're better off leaving it so you'll be grandfathered in for next upgrade.

You may not always be near a WiFi hotspot. The park, the beach, working in your car, etc.

there are two ways to tether a device, usb and wifi. usb is obvious, you connect your phone to your laptop and your laptop uses your phone like a modem or router to get internet access
wifi hotspot is the same just through wifi, its like your wireless router at home
think usb tethering=network cable, wifi tethering=wireless router

i think it doesnt matter
but some devices cant connect to a wifi hotspot, granted most laptops or handheld devices do have wifi, some older laptops may not and may be able to use usb tethering. you can also use it on a pc that probably doesnt have wifi

no worries, they are in the same place in the settings, under tethering and wifi hotspot, they kinda do the same thing. i use my wifi hotspot with my kindle fire
I believe on stock ROMs (including rooted), unless you freeze or uninstall some app that TMobile installed that monitors whether you're using tethering or hotspotting. That's their easy way to detect whether you're tethering, they may also sniff your packets for the user agent info, but I'm not sure if they go through that much trouble. Besides most data plans have limits now, they shouldn't care how those gigabytes are used.

In more recent stock ROMs the message has changed to read, "may use minutes with certain plans." As I said, at least as recently as January, free Wi-Fi Calling was a no-charge add-on to the plan -- just call up customer service and ask to have it turned on. (I hadn't bothered before then because I never came close to using up all my minutes, but in January I added my son to my family plan when he switched over from AT&T, and at that point it became important. )
This is what I did to block data reported to T-Mobile as "tethering". I have the unlimited data package with 3GB of tethering allowance. I'm not sure if this work with Sprint, as I don't have Sprint. Maybe someone can test it out and see if it works on their network.
1 - Make sure you have correct drivers for ADB mode. (LINK)
2 - Connect your phone with USB Debugging. (Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging)
3 - Use ADB to push this command. "settings put global tether_dun_required 0" (I used ADB Shell for Chrome to push this.)
4 - After you push the command, change APN from IPv6 to IPv4/IPv6. (Settings > More > Cellular Network > Access Point Names > Edit your current APN)
5 - Reboot the phone.
6 - That's it, data should not be reporting as tethering anymore. Enjoy unlimited tethering!
NOTE: When ADB first tries to access your phone, you should get a pop up ON YOUR PHONE that says "Allow USB debugging?" Select OK on your phone to let ADB connect to your phone.
i also have tmobile, and the unlimited high speed data package with 3gb tethering. last night i hit my 3gb, and got stopped from tethering. so i installed the wifi tether router app(not in the play store). using it to tether, tmobile has no idea, and i can tether fine. if you google this app, its fairly easy to find.

I use a mix of USB and WIFI tethering so I not sure of that would work for me. Plus I'd rather not have a random wifi app being able to see the data I am using. Not sure if my data is 100% safe.

Wifi Tether Router most definitely works with the Nexus 5, I've used it with a multitude of different roms. If you follow OP's simple instructions though you wont need it. Why pay for an app when you can enable tethering in about 60 seconds? I have the same T-Mo plan as many of you, full unlimited with 3GB of tethering.

So this did not work for my T-Mo N5. Just hit the cap yesterday. Did this earlier today. Reset, checked the DB to make sure the value is still there (it is). Still getting capped.
Any other ideas? Maybe I'll just have to use the app suggested?
If you're tethering to a laptop, tmo also checks your user agent for browsing and will send you to the upsell page if it is any desktop browser.

Just a quick question. I have a 5GB Tethering limit and an Unlimited (No throttle) native Data Limit. Will this mod remove the tethering limit? Will T-Mo still see my usage or will this mod replace my Tethering with my native data plan (Unlimited) I only ask because I would greatly like to avoid any unexpected charges.

Then I followed the directions to edit the APN from the S5 forum. I changed the protocol from IP6 to IP4.
Then I reinstalled Wi-Fi Tether for root. Followed the setup directions for the S5.
Started the app up. Was good to go.
I'm replying from my phone. I'll update later with more details and links. But that is about it to get tethering.

First your phone needs to be rooted, then you need to have ES File Explorer installed on your phone. You can use ES File Explorer to edit the file in the system folder.
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Pull up the Menu for it (hold down the multitask button for that)
3. Tap on Tools
4. Turn on Root Explorer
5. Tap on Root Explorer on the left side and go to Mount R/W
6. Make sure all of the settings are set to RW, tap OK
7. Up top tap / that should take you to the root of the phone,
Now you should be able to follow the instructions to make your APN Editable. Make sure to also edit the one above the Tethering APN and enable it to be editable.
When you click on the file it opens it up in read only, you have to hit the menu in the top right corner to edit the file.
Be very careful and only change what he tells you to change. I would make a back up of the file and place it somewhere you know you can find it.
Once you have enabled the APN and saved the file restart your phone. Once you are restarted navigate to where the APN's are. System Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Once you are there click on the top right corner and tap Reset to Default. That should pull down the new settings so you can edit your APN settings.
Then follow these instructions.
Need to change your APN, simply navigate to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. Select your T-Mobile APN, and scroll to APN protocol. Change this to IPv4, and then save your APN

I tired it on my AT&T. all it did was allow me to change the settings for the hotspot, but it didn't bypass the AT&T checks

I would be concerned about ATT detecting this if you are grandfathered in. Waiting myself to see if there is a workaround like vpn.
not a native bypass but works....
All I do is, Replace TetheringProvision.apk with the modded one, change the permissions to 644 (rw-r--r--), go into customer.xml and change all non ims profiles to ipv4 (leave the ims protocols ipv6 or else VoLTE and WiFi-Calling will not work), go to settings and change the apn by adding dun to default,mms,supl and change it to ipv4. Then I reboot my phone. No reset apns needed. In this state you will still use hotspot allotment. That is because T-mobile is using user-agent strings to decipher device being used. Only way to fix that is to get a vpn and use it on the devices you connect to your hotspot. I have used almost a terabyte of data downloading tv shows and movies with no warnings or hotspot data allotment being used. The only allotment that gets used is the little bit that gets through while you connect to your vpn.
