Tethering Block for T-Mobile (Lollipop) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is what I did to block data reported to T-Mobile as "tethering". I have the unlimited data package with 3GB of tethering allowance. I'm not sure if this work with Sprint, as I don't have Sprint. Maybe someone can test it out and see if it works on their network.
1 - Make sure you have correct drivers for ADB mode. (LINK)
2 - Connect your phone with USB Debugging. (Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging)
3 - Use ADB to push this command. "settings put global tether_dun_required 0" (I used ADB Shell for Chrome to push this.)
4 - After you push the command, change APN from IPv6 to IPv4/IPv6. (Settings > More > Cellular Network > Access Point Names > Edit your current APN)
5 - Reboot the phone.
6 - That's it, data should not be reporting as tethering anymore. Enjoy unlimited tethering!
NOTE: When ADB first tries to access your phone, you should get a pop up ON YOUR PHONE that says "Allow USB debugging?" Select OK on your phone to let ADB connect to your phone.

i also have tmobile, and the unlimited high speed data package with 3gb tethering. last night i hit my 3gb, and got stopped from tethering. so i installed the wifi tether router app(not in the play store). using it to tether, tmobile has no idea, and i can tether fine. if you google this app, its fairly easy to find.

I use a mix of USB and WIFI tethering so I not sure of that would work for me. Plus I'd rather not have a random wifi app being able to see the data I am using. Not sure if my data is 100% safe.

Wifi Tether Router most definitely works with the Nexus 5, I've used it with a multitude of different roms. If you follow OP's simple instructions though you wont need it. Why pay for an app when you can enable tethering in about 60 seconds? I have the same T-Mo plan as many of you, full unlimited with 3GB of tethering.

So this did not work for my T-Mo N5. Just hit the cap yesterday. Did this earlier today. Reset, checked the DB to make sure the value is still there (it is). Still getting capped.
Any other ideas? Maybe I'll just have to use the app suggested?

If you're tethering to a laptop, tmo also checks your user agent for browsing and will send you to the upsell page if it is any desktop browser.

just a couple of questions
Just lost my office Wi-Fi this week and going to do this, this weekend to restore my service next week.
I have tmo unlimited
I have a n5
Does the phone need to be rooted?
Does the Wi-Fi tether so have to be for off store or can I use the Google play app?
End goal use Wi-Fi tether to video stream on my tablet rather then my little screen...
Thnx.

FOUND: FoxFi Jelly Bean workaround

This is a method to make FoxFi fully functional, and to verify that you are not being charged by your carrier. Steps will need to be adjusted based on your carrier and their native tether bloatware, and may depend on your phone. This is based on a 'rizon Slll.
Enable FoxFi:
1. Open FoxFi Key app.
2. Enter Mobile Hotspot from the window shade, as it should show up there automatically.
3. Set up WPA2 encryption.
3. Enable connecting device: You will need to enter the MAC address and name of your connecting computer. You can name it whatever you want; in OS X, the MAC address can be found in WiFi > Network Preferences > Advanced > Hardware.
4. Connect to FoxFi on your computer.
DONE!
Verify that your carrier is not charging you:
1. Enter Mobile Hotspot.
2. Toggle it off.
3. Toggle it on.
4. If you are not being charged, your phone will say that it is checking for service, then a message will appear that you must call your carrier to enable service.
5. Close Mobile Hotspot and FoxFi, as you will no longer be able to use FoxFi after the service check has been completed through Mobile Hotspot.
6. Reopen FoxFi

I thought Verizon didn't charge for tethering anyway. Unless some people that still have unlimited data get charged for tethering?
From what I'm aware, Verizon still charges a monthly fee for tethering. I could be wrong, though.

Tethering is free on Verizon LTE phones. Of coure it will use data from your data plan. Look at Settings->Wireless and network->More Settings->Mobile Hotspot.
You can thank Google's "Open Access" provision when the C Block was being auctioned off.

I thought the ruling in that tethering case was they couldn't charge customers that are on the new share everything plan and thru couldn't block tethering apps.

It was explained to me that "grandfathered unlimited accounts" could be charged the $30 tethering mobile hotspot fee. All new shared plans cannot be charged per court decision.

so for those of us on the unlimited plan, is there a way to disable the " verizon hotspot" from kicking in every time we try to use a 3rd party hotspot provider?
i am running jellybean 4.1.1 and just rooted my phone today and installed titanium pro. yet i can't seem to find anything in there to disable the verizon hotspot from being the primary hotspot app.
any help would be MOST appreciated!:fingers-crossed:

Did all that and it worked. (kind of, I think)
Then closed FoxFi again.
Reopened FoxFi and the VZ Mobile Hotspot still continues to pop up. When the toggle is "ON", i can connect with my laptop. When I toggle it "OFF" so VZ Hotspot closes, and only FoxFi is open, the connection quits.
When I just open FoxFi and I can get a connection, the VZ Hotspot does not mention anything about a subscription (it only does when you toggle it off/on). Does this mean I am not being charged for it?

Not to be glib, but am I missing something here? I've been using FoxFi for over a year and a half and have never had any extra charges from VW. Install the app, set up a password, turn it on, good to go. No extra steps at all.
Foxfi did not work with my Gnex that was running android 4.1.1, but my S3 that I just picked up about a week ago is working fine. I am using it now to post this comment. In the description of the app it says will not work on "most" phone with Android 4.1. I am also on the unlimited plan and don't plan on giving it up lol.

I pick up my phone today. I will root and make the change suggested. I will report back ASAP.
Just a quick question. I have a 5GB Tethering limit and an Unlimited (No throttle) native Data Limit. Will this mod remove the tethering limit? Will T-Mo still see my usage or will this mod replace my Tethering with my native data plan (Unlimited) I only ask because I would greatly like to avoid any unexpected charges.
Thanks,

First I rooted with CF.
Then I followed the directions to edit the APN from the S5 forum. I changed the protocol from IP6 to IP4.
Then I reinstalled Wi-Fi Tether for root. Followed the setup directions for the S5.
Started the app up. Was good to go.
I'm replying from my phone. I'll update later with more details and links. But that is about it to get tethering.

Detailed instructions from this thread ....
First your phone needs to be rooted, then you need to have ES File Explorer installed on your phone. You can use ES File Explorer to edit the file in the system folder.
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Pull up the Menu for it (hold down the multitask button for that)
3. Tap on Tools
4. Turn on Root Explorer
5. Tap on Root Explorer on the left side and go to Mount R/W
6. Make sure all of the settings are set to RW, tap OK
7. Up top tap / that should take you to the root of the phone,
Now you should be able to follow the instructions to make your APN Editable. Make sure to also edit the one above the Tethering APN and enable it to be editable.
When you click on the file it opens it up in read only, you have to hit the menu in the top right corner to edit the file.
Be very careful and only change what he tells you to change. I would make a back up of the file and place it somewhere you know you can find it.
Once you have enabled the APN and saved the file restart your phone. Once you are restarted navigate to where the APN's are. System Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Once you are there click on the top right corner and tap Reset to Default. That should pull down the new settings so you can edit your APN settings.
Then follow these instructions.
Need to change your APN, simply navigate to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. Select your T-Mobile APN, and scroll to APN protocol. Change this to IPv4, and then save your APN

I would be concerned about ATT detecting this if you are grandfathered in. Waiting myself to see if there is a workaround like vpn.
not a native bypass but works....
All I do is, Replace TetheringProvision.apk with the modded one, change the permissions to 644 (rw-r--r--), go into customer.xml and change all non ims profiles to ipv4 (leave the ims protocols ipv6 or else VoLTE and WiFi-Calling will not work), go to settings and change the apn by adding dun to default, mms, supl and change it to ipv4. Then I reboot my phone. No reset apns needed. In this state you will still use hotspot allotment. That is because T-mobile is using user-agent strings to decipher device being used. Only way to fix that is to get a vpn and use it on the devices you connect to your hotspot. I have used almost a terabyte of data downloading tv shows and movies with no warnings or hotspot data allotment being used. The only allotment that gets used is the little bit that gets through while you connect to your vpn.

That's nothing new - hotspot aka tethering has never been approved on their unlimited plans. I have family share plan so I'm good. There are some workarounds, at least there used to be in the past.

try FoxFi from the PlayStore, or go old school via USB tether.
Sent from my MHA-L29 using Tapatalk
If this is a TTL issue, try adjusting that? May help your Wi-Fi issues? Most Russian providers have the same limitation on their "Unlimited" plans.
AT&T is the devil when it comes to tethering. I can tether fine on my iphone but my sim mostly lives in what ever Android device I'm currently carrying around. If I try to tether when on an Android device I get the dreaded call customer support message.
Data Issues
I have an issue with sharing data with any device either hotspot or tether. I'm using a MHA-L29. Huawei has replaced this phone once and I'm about to send back for second time. Cricket provided me with a new sim card and verified that everything should work. I'm on Advanced plan, 20GB plan with only 2.6GB used so far. I can swap sim into my Ascend Mate2 and data flows great. Anyone have any ideas?
I use straight talk, the sim uses at&t towers. The default tethering app works perfectly to hotspot my laptop.
I use it about 1-2 times a week, when I need to look something up, when I'm out in the field working on something
and don't have access. I MIGHT be connected 10-15 minutes, just web browsing.
Try this via ADB--You need to be rooted
adb shell
su
content insert --uri content://settings/global --bind name:s:tether_dun_required --bind value:i:0
"net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
OR from phone w/ terminal emulator app
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit

Tethering w/T-Mobile & EasyTether now counted as tethering (SIM1/SIM2 issue or DPI)?

Tethering w/T-Mobile & EasyTether now counted as tethering (SIM1/SIM2 issue or DPI)?
Hi Everyone,
Been using my OP6 and loving it on TMobile. I noticed, as with other unlocked phones, tethering with EasyTether USB does not get detected as tethering...until today. For example, last month I had 0.0GB Tethering and did occasionally tether with Easy Tether.
My cable modem was acting up today and I switched to Easy Tether to do a WebEx video call (and forgot about it)...and happened to check and they counted 1.1 GB of tethering in 4 hours -- ouch!
The only change was I switched the SIM card to SIM slot 1 a few days ago, as it had been in SIM 2 because of some VM clearing issue I read about.
I am wondering if they detected tethering in because of SIM1 vs. SIM2, or did deep packet inspection and picked something up?
BTW...I also noticed today that tethering was slower than it usually was...not throughput which is usually 70-80Gbits around here, but more latency (like they were monitoring something).
Has anyone gotten WiFi Tether Router working on this phone? Any other thoughts?
BTW -- I did switch back to SIM2 because my VM's have not been getting erased since using SIM1. Also rooted on OOS 5.1.9 if that matters.
I also have a 3 year VPN subscription so I can avoid DPI but it's a hassle...

How are you using it? Without a vpn or with a vpn? Because I have read Sprint and T-Mobile are really looking at vpn usage, And T-mobile has been warning people and Sprint counting as hotspot. I personally on my own if no one knows about this would run it over a https tunnel, then your vpn is hidden the software is called stunnel. Many vpn providers use stunnel now, you just have to enable it.
Just noticed it has been awhile since they were last on here.

This will cover you 95% f the time, and you don't even need VPN or EasyTether:
1) Install VPN Hotspot (great open source app), use it to turn on system WiFi tethering, and then route all the traffic over WAN0 even if you are not using a VPN.
2) Note that root su "Settings put global tether_dun_required = 0" should do the same thing, but you can do both to be sure.
3) Install Change TTL, set enable on boot, and tell it to set TTL to 64.
Now occasionally, T-Mobile will still detect some tethering, but it only picks up maybe 5%, and even if you go over the limit they don't seem to be able to throttle since your traffic is routed over the non tethering APN. They may also be detecting some because I am not sure if Change TTL supports IPV6...the IPV6 TTL setting is Hop Limit or HL and since TMobile uses IPv6 by default...? To test this if you care, you could setup an IPv4 APN.
Regarding VPN -- I think they may automatically count this as tether, but I don't really know. I have NordVPN and a PPTP VPN to our home and vacation home and could test further, but I haven't because you don't really need a VPN.
Hope this helps,
MW

On my plan TMobile 1+ for business it is 10G before throttling.
One month my home internet was down and I was tethering and had switched to iDrive cloud backup from CrashPlan so for two days it was just blasting data through the tethering connection. It registered 35.1 GB Tethering and 389 GB of non-tethering (nearly all tethering) and was still not throttling at all.
Besides that one special case, I have never registered more than 1 or 2GB tethering using the method outlined above even though I have probably used well over 10 a few times....

Sounds like I don't need to worry about it then. I only use it for my android deck in my truck. Mostly music

Tethering without Cricket finding out

Is there a way I can tether without Cricket finding out.I need a solution I'm sick of them, I can't even buy hotspot because I'm not using a cricket phone. I have the Essential PH-1.
Adding the following to the build.prop should enable tethering but won't hide it.
Net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Using a VPN might hide it but some carriers have a way to still detect it. I forgot the technical reason.
I have cricket and used tethering quite often on my phone (ph-1) as well as when I had the Moto x pure. I'm even using the $60/month plan that doesn't allow it.
I have Cricket and tether just fine on my PH-1.

That could be, but this post is in the Essential Phone forum..... I am discussing my Essential Phone and to answer the OP's question, in order to enable enable wifi hotspot on cricket there is no special APN's or provisioning required. I put in my cricket sim card in to my Essential Phone and from day 1 the wifi hotspot worked right out of the box.
I have this phone also, as well as the pixel 2 xl and a Moto g5 and all had to have the apn type altered. Some phones will work and some won't. Just offering a suggestion to the op to help him with something he's obviously having trouble with so u can save the attitude. Your system version will also determine what the apn type will be or allow to be added. If ur phone worked on day 1 good for u. His isn't so the man needs some help
Look my tethering works fine, it's just they will cut off my service again If I use it like I want I don't know how they detect it

Your system version will also determine what the apn type will be or allow to be added. If ur phone worked on day 1 good for u. His isn't so the man needs some help

I am on T-mobile One plan (the 55+ plan but I believe that is considered a One plan) and pdanet works for me. change the TTL doesn't work for me though, it used to work when I was on the Select Choice plan.

*YOU NEED ROOT*
im on at&t and this worked for me and bypassed throttling on hotspot:
download a file manager with root and go to system/ build.prop (open in a text editor)
scroll to the bottom and add:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
(save)
then with usb debugging enabled go to a pc and open adb, type:
adb shell
(enter)
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
(enter)
(reboot)
if you dont have tethering option available just use any tethering root app from playstore

I have ROOT, I've tried that they can still detect that I'm using it and somehow I have nat type 3 now instead of 2. I'm getting annoyed with cricket
