VZW GS3 Custom Kernel Experiences - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys,
As many of us try out the various custom kernels for the various custom ROMs, we like to share our experiences, good or bad. However the problem with doing this is that we often clutter the ROM thread with unrelated kernel talk.
So here is the perfect thread to share your experience.
ALL THAT IS ASKED OF YOU IS THAT YOU LIST THE ROM AND KERNEL AND THEIR VERSIONS IN YOUR POST AND PLEASE DO NOT POST MIRRORS... JUST LINK TO DEVELOPERS THREAD IF LINKS ARE REQUESTED
THANK YOU

Never heard of Faux but LK 1.2.1 is giving me wonderful battery life. First discharge cycle and only used 4% in 1hr 5min! And that was with 15 minutes of Facebooking and a few texts =)

I actually used faux123 kernel over the past few days and my battery life seemed about the same, but the phone definitely ran smoother...I imagine that my battery life would have increased if I stayed on longer but I am currently testing the available kernels to see which I like better... I'm checking out KT747 now on CleanROM

Let me know how it turns out. I am currently running faux123 and also agree that the battery life is about the same when used with clean rom.

I'm at 15 hours and only down to 61%, running CleanROM 5.5.1 and Faux123 with optimized settings as mentioned in the CR thread.
I usually leave my phone charging overnight but I'm going to leave it unplugged to keep tracking the amazing battery life I'm getting from this combination of ROM and kernel.
Will post a snap later....

Kernel w/ CleanROM 5.5.2
I recently installed CleanROM 5.5.2 (has the patch). I had been running Synergy and, although I wasn't displeased with it, I just had some extra time - thought I'd look at something different for giggles. Anyway . . .
I was also looking for a kernel since I was putting the effort into flashing. I tried the latest Lean Kernel first. It seemed to work, but when I ran some of the speed test apps, it didn't give the best numbers. I know that the numbers don't tell the entire story, but at least it's a start.
I then flashed the stock kernel. It too didn't give great numbers. In fact, they were similar to the Lean Kernel tests.
I finally flashed the latest Ziggy kernel. It's working very well and I don't have it over clocked. I'm running it at the stock speeds and it's giving me better performance numbers than Lean Kernel and the stock kernel. It's giving me no reason to try anything else, right now.
I was going to provide the link to the Ziggy kernel, but since I don't ahve the requisit number of posts, I can't provide it. You'll have to look for it if you're interested . . . sorry.
I'm looking forward to hearing about other people's experiences - especially compared to Ziggy's kernel.

CleanRom 5.5.2 Faux Beta 3 Kernel
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

Been using Lean kernel by Imoseyon since the day I rooted. For me it's by far the best kernel. I'm at 1720/384mhz and voltages set to Imoseyons suggested settings.

I have had the best results in stock kernel. Clean rom 5.5.1. Wi-Fi only though.

Whats up guys.
I tried stock, lk1.0/1.1, kt kernel, faux ultimate v14 and now the faux v15 beta 3 on Clean rom 5.51 and galaxy mod versions 9/10/11. These are cliff notes on my kernel experiences.
Stock was extremely stable, battery was good and rom seemed quite responsive and fast.
Lk kernels gave me the quickest response through screens and the fastest benchmarks. Traditionally lk gives me great battery life but i have not experienced that with touchwiz roms.
While lean kernel is the fastest it offered me the Least battery of all the roms.
+1 to fast charge.
KT WAS faster than stock, battery was slightly better. Probably because you can set the off screen profile to 96mhz. The idle drain was terrific with this kernel. However i had sods and random lag. Nobody should have lag on this device.
+1 to fast charge.
Faux kernel... Ultimate worked great for me. Others had issues... Fc's, sods, etc..
I actually ran this with galaxy mod and loved the combination of speed and battery life. Fauxs kernels have deep slept like nothing else for me. I have been using beta 3 for the last 2 days.
NO LAGS.... NO FC'S... NO SODS... IMMEDIATELY NOTICE INCREASE IN BATTERY LIFE. MY FIRST CHARGE CYCLE WAS BETTER THAN LK 1.1 THIRD CHARGE CYCLE.
I AM USING FAUXS APP TO VOLTAGE CONTROL AND HAVE MY GOV SETTINGS ON INTELLIDEMAND. 1. 62MAX. 384 MIN.
RUNNING FANTASTIC!!!

Samsung Galaxy SIII powered by CleanROM 5.5.2

Clean ROM 5.5.1 stock power save mode on, brightness set to 25%. Moderate use.
Only complaint would be some stutter/lag with power save on. When unlocking or opening apps. Once it's running its fine. Think this is due to the power save mode settings.
Had good luck with Faux's kernel, and I'm trying KT's now (uc 192 / oc 1728) with undervolt from the OP.
Can't compare battery life since the area I did the stock had generally good 4g/3g signal with wifi at home. Area I'm currently at has no wifi and sporadic 3g/1x

[Q] Using Faux123 [Kernel]Skyrocket[2.6.35.14](v0.0.8) with Latest QwikWiz

I've been using the latest QwikWiz for a couple of weeks now and I've been pleased with the results thus far (other than the speech to txt not working anymore, and when it does, it says 'canadian english'), but I was wondering if anyone has tried installing this kernel and using qwikwiz at the same time? I'm not even sure if its possible (im new at this kinda stuff). Just wondering what peoples thoughts/experiences were.
This Kernel should work on ALL roms less CM7.
Make a nandroid and Flash. it will NOT prem bork your phone. if anything all you will have to do is get back into CMW and restore your nandroid and it bring your phone all the way back to the point you backed up at, with data, kernel, apps, setting, messages, and all that good stuff.
so flash away bruh.
The qwikwiz says it was OC'd to 1.83, and this kernel says it is 1.7....is this slower than what the ROM was pushing the processor to?

it was running da_g kernel is why so if u use faux kernel which is more stable.... then u can only overclock to 1.7
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I never had any stability issues with the other kernel. Only issue I had was that the speech to text would stop working randomly (until i did a soft reset), and then it would still say I was in Canadian English...but after awhile that would stop working again. I guess I'll give this one a go and see how its like. Worst case scenario, I guess I could always roll back.
Pretty happy with this.
Using NexusmodI717 with Gideonx script.
No issues.
I attempted to use faux123's kernel but was having issues with my device not going into "deep sleep"...
Now I may only have 10 posts here on XDA but I would like to state that I did unplug the charger and used CPU Spy to see if my device would go into deep sleep when not in use.
I then switched to Da_G's kernel (0.42 for ROGERS) and my device sleeps when not in use.

I had the same issue too with faux kernel not going into deep sleep, but it seems to be fine now. One thing I would like to mention is battery life is kinda dissapointing for me. I m using Quikwiz w Faux123 and everything seems fine. Goes to sleep every time. and battery is about 1 to 2% per hour while sleeping. and that is OC`d to 1.72. very pleased with this combo.

charge battery, then falsh kernel
charge til full then turn off phone and turn it on.
go to battery calabration, you can get it in the market..
let it charge up to 4200 then calabrate.
if this doesn't work then charge to 4200 again calabrate again.. then boot into cwm and clear bat stat, let it die.. then charge to 100/4200.
then calabrate again.. and enjoy
Is battery calibration necessary? And also what roms r u guys using wit faux that is good for battery life? I'm planning to change my rom from tpc to something else

Red sonja Here
had good battery life before the kernel.
and i am using spb 3d Shell.....which uses more battery than the stock launcher. so im sure it will be even better that way.
Been using the two with limited issues. Phone is snappiest it has been, and scores slightly better in every benchmark
Idle battery loss is an improvement....but it seems to drain faster than da g's .3 kernel did while in use
Still testing though...we have 5 batteries and one may be bad.
On this battery today I have had the best battery life on faux kernel since flashing it.
We put the ??? Battery in our other skyrocket today (which is running .3 with quickwiz) to see if we can narrow it down.
My phone is definitely sleeping, but only uses 1.72 or 384 mhz

Best Battery Life Kernel

I'm running synergy nightlies and am looking for a kernel that get the best battery life... I don't need over clocking or anything like that I keep the phone in power saver mode if that even does much... If anyone has some information on this that would be great!
Also is the kernel that comes with the latest synergy nightlies good on battery? Thanks!

I've found that using setcpu and keeping ziggy's synergy kernel at 1.51 max and .384 min with the ondemand has been stellar in battery life. Those are the default kernel settings for the stock samsung kernel. Its been great for me, but its also all relative to what you consider to be "best battery life" i keep a charger at work, at home, and in my car, so my phone is always plugged in, i also keep the brightness all the way down because that seems to be bright enough for me, and i don't do much streaming since i keep all my music on my sd card. But i can easily get 3 - 4 hours of screen on time
If ziggy's kernel isn't your choice then i'd say go with imoseyons lean kernel, i used that all the time on my tbolt and it definitely improved battery life. That kernel can be found HERE he doesn't have a thread for it on xda, so you'll have to download it here.
Oh and if you do try out imoseyon and want to return to ziggy's kernel, there's a link to download ziggy's kernel in the OP of the synergy thread.
I hope this helps

The latest innovation in human-smartphone interaction. Our scientist have shown in extensive tests that humans operating our kernel on their devices experience 67% more joy in life while simultaneously the likelihood of being maimed or killed by falling space debris is significantly reduced. Also preliminary human trials indicate that it might offer some protection against lethal dosages of gamma radiation and blows to the head with a rod-like object.

Flashed this on my N7 its running smooth. This by far is my favorite overall kernel you won't get nightlies with glados but its so stable you don't need them. I think this is the downfall of a lot of other kernels there flakey in the sense that one release is awesome and the next could mess your phone up.

Performance is good, the battery-performance ratio is optimal for me as I don't need performance
It has the stock clock speed and is not as feature rich as Faux's or Morfic's, but I like the kernel how it is, and I am sure it will improve as this is an early version
I recommend trying it, its good on battery and I have not experienced any lag, unlike I experienced with some other kernels

He doesn't like (and probably rightfully so) that the CM team took a few open source kernel tweaks and modified them so that they weren't triggered in the same manner while not giving credit to the original kernel developers. It was something along those lines; my details may be off a bit.
Meaning color cpu/ffs/fsync/whatever implementation methods may have changed and the Rom Control panel will not be able to tweak them on Glados.
It should boot and work just fine; so long as you're aware that any kernel tweaks that CM10 has in it's settings menu may not work.

Seems to be pretty smooth, but frankly, ALL of the kernels seem smooth, lol. I never notice the little things others talk about. I can really only tell the difference on benchmarks.
(I never notice a lot of things...for example, I have never had wifi issues on android device, and as a family we have five devices. And I have owned at least one hard drive since 1988--10 MB MFM baby! --and have never, ever, had one crash. Must be the clean living.)
I'm using it with paranoid android 1.92 and so far it's amazing. Thanks to the OP for bringing this to my attention

KToonsez Kernel Settings

Thought it would would be nice to have a thread dedicated to KToonsez kernel settings and adjustments. This can be the place to share tips of what works best for you. To organize this a bit, list the following....
Is it built for speed, stability, or battery saving?
Min-max CPU freq.
CPU volts if you changed them.
Gov and settings.
Anything else you want to add??
FYI. Scrolling though alot of pictures all in one page on the web or the Vellamo HTML 5 benchmark is the best way to test stability IMO.
Also be careful of running your benchmarks at 2106mhz. They may increase the CPU temp higher than you think. I hit atleast 140 degrees Fahrenheit on the Elephant stress test!! I'm not sure what temp the CPU can really take before it destroys itself.

Fairly smooth and quick.
Wheatley Gov + stock Gov settings.
96-2106
2106 @ 1325mv
96 @ 800mv
Touch Boost @ stock
This setup seems to keep the CPU from burning up and still puts out the power.
In the taskbar I am running Micro CPU Monitor, Temp Monitor(CPU), and Cool Tool APPS. All this is keeping good track of everything my CPU is doing regardless of what app I am currently using. Its all right there at the top of the screen. Load, Frequency, and Temp.

What app are people using to adjust the settings. I could have sworn there was a KTweaks app but sure can't find it. Know it came with a ROM I was running.
its called ktweaker.
i put my minimum to 144 thats all i changed.

Its great to see someone replying to this thread. I really thought it was going to go dead. Considering this is probably one of the most popular kernels I thought it would take off pretty good. Anyways thanks for your input and keep it coming!
Thanks guys!

Aside from when im at work (signal blows at work) its exceptional, i can manage to get anywhere from 3-4 hours of screen on time or more. Just depends what all i do that day, but i leave 4G on 24/7 and only use WIFI at home, sync stays on as well. Its plenty enough to get me through each day, so about 7am to 10pm.

your welcome
Following this thread because it does seem like interesting information that's not easily available anywhere else.
One important thing I see people aren't listing is what ROM they are using, especially if it's AOSP-based or TW-based.
I was running KT747 10/31 release on the first JB TW leak and was getting a lot of strange behavior, even with the stock settings.
I'll be trying it again on the latest release once I get my device dialed in (Clean ROM 4.5) and create a backup.
Do anyone have the link for ktoonsez kernel, trying out a new rom and i want to use this kernel and the ktweaker app..i searched but havent found it yet
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
It's in the original android development section.

Its under Original development, may be how you missed it. I think all kernels are there because they are built from source, someone correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks, The name of the thread threw me off, i skipped over it...when i went back i saw ktoonez

BTW KToonsez just released an updated version today. Haven't tried it yet.
here is another thread with more info, i follow this one, i hope you find some good stuff here
It's no good. If u can find the 10-28 kernel. That's the one to use. Works great for me.

Post your CPU Setup

What cpu governors are y'all using? This isn't a question thread about what's the best or anything like that, I'm just curious. For me right now on ViperXL with ElementalX 2.2 + elemental Xtras with CPU0 at 1.5 with Interactivex2, and cpu1 at 1.7 with Lionheart. Zippy!
Update: ElementalX 2.5 with lagfree and 1.7 Ghz on both with FIOPS scheduler. Fast and seems extra battery drain is very minimal
Both cores 1890 max 192 min with intellidemand

192-1728, intellidemand on both cores. Optimized for performance, undervolted with 850 mV min.
This is with viper xl 3.2.1 and elementalx 2.5
Very happy with it
InflatedTitan: just curious...why do you have your min freq high? Do you notice an impact on battery?

My wife has a OneX also, so I feel i can carry my charger with me everywhere... I have NO regards for battery, im all about pure performance. I run mine that high on every rom along with any performance tweak I can find, and brightness 100%. I guarantee mine can hang with the big dogs lol. My bro in laws X+ has a hard time keeping up.. Don't know if mines just freakishly fast, or his is just part of a bad batch of slow ones... But bottom line, mine spanks his, every GS3 and razr that it sees.

I'm on elementalx ocd to 1728 With min of 192 with the lagfree gov. Decent batterylife but my games are really smooth than on any other gov.

Using stock on Viper 3.2.2 since I had lag on viper 3.2.0 with elemental.
My daily driver is ViperXL 2.4.1 with Beastmode Kernel 4.4 set at 192/1512. I'm on Badass governor and UV -50 across the board. This is the only setup so far that I can get 24hours of battery life and almost 4 hours of screen on time. I find this to be the most stable for "my phone" with no force closes, no random reboots, etc. Everything simply works.
I've tried all of the new JB roms and I always seem to get reboots at least a couple times a day. So I'll stick with ICS for now. Anyone else still on ICS custom roms?

Nope, I've been on JB for a good 3 months now. Never any reboots unless I UV too far or overclock at 1.9. The best battery I've gotten was 28 hours and 4.5 hours of screen on time with RebelROM, but I'm on ViperXL 3.2.2 right now.
viper 3.2.2 with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2061577 at max with 192 and undervolt to 800 i can get 10-28 hrs battery depending on how i use it. thats with no wifi.

Yea I used to always run that on my Inspire but I don't have it available right now (linaro v3 kernel). All I have is ondemand, userspace, powersave, interactive, and performance.
Running Carbon, latest weekly release, super smooth.
