Phone shuts off when taking pictures with flash. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This has been an issue for a long while but its frequency seems to have increased now. Basically it happens randomly and only if picture is taken with flash. I have experienced it on both stock jelly bean ROM and cm10. I don't remember it being an issue on ICS or GB. My phone is not over clocked and the issue does not seem to be affected by kernel.
My gf also has a nexus S and same thing happens with her. We both have the i9023. Her phone is completely stock and not rooted.
This problem is also not limited to the stock camera app as I have experienced it with camera zoom fx as well.
Anyone else with the problem? Do you think its a potentially hardware issue with nexus S?

I think your problem has something to do with your batter. This is my theory because whenever you try to take a picture with flash on a faulty, or non-calibrated 3rd party batter, the phone shuts off. Try this: take out the batter, plug your phone in to AC, and take a photo with flash. Let me know what happens

What is a third party batter? I am not using any "third party" thing. :S
And this problem isnt easy to reproduce since it doesnt always happen. It just randomly happens and I can go on taking several pictures with flash without a problem. Actually what I have noticed is that it will happen on the first or second click in a session or it wont happen. If the phone shuts off and upon reboot I immediately take a pic with flash then it will shut down again but if I give it a break then it wont.

Yeah, the same thing here. Must be a 4.2.1 issue. Happened to me on 2 different roms. I never take that many photos, but happened a week or so and didn't think about it. But today needed the flash for Christmas pictures and every time I used the flash the phone shut off and I had to power back up. What rom are you on?

I am running cm10 stable right now. This is a jelly bean issue I think and I dunno why its not reported enough because its quite a major issue if you ask me. Nothing more embarrassing than that happening in front of friends.

I forgot to mention that sometimes it wouldn't shut down, it would render the touch screen unusable and I had to pull the battery

Thats not happened with me so far.

It's the cheap battery
My phone switches off when I take picture with flash but only if I'm using the cheap battery which i ordered with spare charger. Tried the cheap battery with my brother's note 4 and it happens every time. It never have or has happened with original battery. This is one of the tests for a new battery.

Phone crash with camera flash

I've noticed that when I take a picture with my inspire 4g, with the flash turned on, the entire phone shuts down right away, but when it's turned into automatic, it works fine, has anyone else has this problem, or know of a solution?

Need a few more details. What ROM, mods, etc. Folks here like to help, but we need to know what you may have modded on the phone.
I'm running stock 2.3.3, rooted, but no custom roms.

That's odd. I have never heard of that on a stock ROM. But maybe someone else here has. Good Luck

You should try wiping everything and installing a custom Rom or a rooted stock Rom and see if problem persists, could be a software issue. There are plenty of stock rooted gb Roms buried a few pages back in dev forum.
Check my sig. Stock roms. There is a rooted gingerbread PD98img, stock. I think it's the 3rd one, iirc.
With the phone plugged into the charger take a pic with flash on and see if your phone resets. Could be a battery issue.

That would be my recommendation. If you knew someone with another inspire you could try their battery. Actually your battery should be under warranty. If your phone is stock looking then you could probably take it to an ATT store and let them check it out and get 1 for free. Or even a call to 611 ATT support might get you a new battery for free. Just tell them it won't hold a charge and the flash causes your phone to reboot and you tried a friends battery and it fixed the issue. ATT has very understanding customer support.
It definitely sounds like a battery issue. I had a very similar issue. My phone would shut off at random times, and one thing that caused it was the camera flash. I picked up a new HTC battery on eBay for like $14, and it runs like a dream! If you cant fork over the money for the HTC brand battery, there are lots of cheaper chinese batteries for like $2 a piece. They would be good to just test and see if the battery is the issue if you cant find a buddy that could let you use a battery for troubleshooting, before you buy an HTC battery.
Absolutely! the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. A new battery solved the issue. If you have a warranty/protection plan call up At&T and they'll take it from there.
Man, I love forums! I was just having this problem this week! I guess my brutal punishment to my battery over Winter break has cost me (I was running the phone down to 0% multiple times a day). Time to get a new battery.

Digging into the problem
I was going crazy with this problem! I wonder now what is the problem with the battery, because mine it seems like it keeps current like a good battery. Does anyoane has any "hardware-electrical" explanation?
Anyway, at least I have one solution and I am partially happy with it.

I'm assuming when you say it "keeps current" you have been using a current widget. The camera flash puts a heavy load on the battery. On an older battery, it may look like it's fine at idle or doing simple tasks, but it can no longer handle the tough tasks.

Phone randomly goes into bootloop. Wtf?

I was on youtube listening to in dying arms and I kept getting email notifications in my status bar but when I opened my email no new emails were found. It sketched me out! I all paranoid with security and what not. Well I went to shut down my phone then reboot into recovery but it went into bootloop instead.
My phone would only go into bootloop as long as power was connected. Otherwise it was like it was completely dead(had full battery tho). I re-flashed cwmr and booted into it and restored.
I'm just going to wipe everything's and start fresh. That bugged me out!
Happen to anyone before? Anyone know a possible cause?

It happened to me once. Overheating was the culprit. I can't remember the app right now, but something I had installed was causing crazy issues. I removed it and have never had another problem.

Yeah I'm back to CM7. I was using CM9 but not being able use the cam corder or watch videos that were recorded on a cam corder was enough for me to go back to CM7!! CM7 randomly shuts off tho. It is a pain in my freaking butt!!!!!!!!
I might try eagles blood and see if this stops happening. Cuz I'm not beat for searching/combing through apps to see if one of them are the cause.
UPDATE: It may be a hardware issue. I was on the phone and put the person on speaker and placed the phone down and it reset. It was very lightly too. Come to think of it, anytime my phone reset it was in my pocket or somewhere I couldn't see the actual phone. So the back of the phone could have hit my thigh too hard and it could have shut down.

I'm using the New Clip mod of the Weapon Rom and have no issues right now. A lot of long time posters are still using it. Very stable. My other thought is swapping the battery at a Tmobile store. My wife's phone used to get hot and reboot when she used edmondo and the GPS. New battery fixed it. I still believe there was a bad batch of batteries with the initial launch.

Fold a piece of paper a few times and put it in between your battery and the case. Could be the battery terminals losing contact briefly.

[Q] Phone Dead after Unlocking Bootloader

Using the program here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835791
I tried to unlock my bootloader. Everything seemed to go fine until the program said the phone was rebooting.
The display went dark as if rebooting but never came back on. Since that moment I can't get the phone to power up at all. I can't get into recovery or download mode. The screen doesn't seem to even try to come on. The phone acts as if it has no battery installed even though the battery is there.
Anyone have any suggestions or do I have a legit brick?

Could be a major detail that some might overlook. That'd for sure do it. I got rid of my OG few weeks ago n I'm still stock so I wouldn't know this, but doesn't the process only take like 10 seconds if that? The actual flashing that's taking place. So it'd have to be quite the odds to lose juice in the middle of flashing. But wouldn't it be charging if its plugged in usb? I hope that my man who posted this gets it powered back up. Would be a major bummer otherwise.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Yes I have tried it without the battery. Right now I'm letting it sit without any battery or power to it to allow all components to discharge. I'll try it again in a couple of minutes.
I'm beginning to think I've got a real live or rather dead brick.

Just to make sure you read and followed all steps right? This one seemed crucial
**** IF YOU HAVE ANY PROGRAMS THAT SYNC WITH YOUR PHONE THEY NEED TO BE UNINSTALLED OR NOT RUNNING BECAUSE THEY CAN CAUSE BRICKS, Pdanet, easytether, droid explorer, kies, etc., etc., on down the line. I repeat if you have a program on your computer that syncs with your phone, it is NOT COOL TO HAVE THAT RUNNING! ****
Just trying to narrow down what the hell could cause the device not to power back up, also how long did you leave the device plugged before disconnecting or pulling the battery. Did oden stop responding or say anything other then rebooting ?

Or instead of paying shipping plus not having a phone for a week or so, you could file an insurance claim... Haha. Last I checked Asurion was still giving new phones due to lack of refurbs.
I had to run out quickly earlier to get a new sim for my Thunderbolt so I can have a phone to use in the meantime. The sim I had for it didn't work.
Some good suggestions. Thanks everyone. I'll have to ponder my options few as they are.

Yeah but when Vzw gets it back do they then discover it was rooted and then charge me for breaking warranty? I've always wondered how much they could tell in a situation like this.

They don't have to get it. Say you dropped it off a boat and you couldn't save it. They don't need it for insurance.

I had this happen on an HTC phone one-time. No joke, but to fix it, I think it ended up holding down power + volume down or up and then put the battery in. I tried a bunch of combinations like that until it booted. Same thing when taking the battery out. Does the red light show when the phone is plugged in?

Phone getting hot when screen on?

I'm using aokp 4.0.4 but it happens on miui v4 as well as cmiui.
The phone shoots up to like 40c+ in ten minutes while just the screen is on. It never did this before i installed miui. I flashed back to stock + root and back but it hasn't changed.

Serious crashes every few minutes

Hey guys I have been having a pretty serious issue the last couple of days. Was running a CM 10 teamchopsticks nightly from a few weeks ago, which worked perfectly up until three days ago. Then it started crashing randomly, the screen would go black and it would vibrate every few seconds, a battery pull would fix it. I updated the phone to the latest nightly, and now I can't run the phone for 5 minutes without the same type of crash. When I battery pulled and tried to turn on the phone, it would immediately crash about 4/5 of the time. This bug is rendering my phone unusable. Not sure whether this is a Rom issue or something else, thanks in advance.
Not sure what kernel I am running.
Hearing it may be a hardware issue, anyone agree?
Could be, try to odin stock jb or ics. If you still have the problem then it's probably hardware. Unfortunately the rocket is getting old. I'm having some old age problems with mine too. Mostly stuck power button.
