[Q] Best Kernel for Viper 1.5.2 - HTC Sensation

Sorry for posting it here, can't post yet on Viper's main thread, (and yes I am a noob)
1. Just wanna ask what is the best Kernel for viper 1.5.2 (I dunno what are their descriptions/effects for each kernels)
2. do you have to make a nand / apps backup first before changing kernel?

1) I'm running Elegancia with PYD Kernel and it works great
2)No i dont do a backup
After you flashed Kernel Just wipe dalvik
Envoyé depuis mon HTC Sensation Z710e avec Tapatalk

Always make a backup. It takes 4 minutes or so and might save your butt
I'm using latest faux (find it in the viper hub or in the link at my signature) it's great. But a kernel choice is really a personal thing as no two of us use the phone quite the same.
Nandroid and try. But keep the same kernel for a few days, otherwise you would not get the real taste of it.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium

First off, you should make a nandroid just in case something goes wrong during installation but if you don't all that you loose is your current rom install. I rarely make nandroids but thats not to say its not recommended, I just enjoy living life on the edge
My favorite kernel for any Sense rom is SebastianFMs Kernel with Axetilens MOD.
Flash your ROM
Flash the Powerful Kernel Reset Tool in Axetilens mod thread
Flash SebastianFMs kernel
Flash the mod - It uses AROMA so you will get to pick and chose all your settings, if you are unsure what to pick most have recommended or default next to the options so you can't go too wrong with them.
He recommends flashing the mod twice just to make sure everything sticks. I always do but I guess thats up to you.
My settings are:
1566mhz on both cores
Performance Gov. (not the dual core option, the third option is what I use)
Underclocked 87mv
300mhz GPU (320mhz could cause stability problems and benchmarks show it doesn't help performance one bit so its a waste of batter)
200mhz 2D (again, anything higher than that is a waste of battery as benchmarks prove that anything higher does no good)
The strictest option for min free settings (I haven't noticed any differnce in load times for the defualt setting and the strict one so its a no brainer to me)
Zram disabled as I have a 512mb hard swap
I have been running this setup for about a week and its still running smooth and fluent. Battery life is incredible to say the least. I'll post some screenshots because quite honestly, you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you in text.
Good luck!

Always make a backup! The kernel is personal preference and nothing more. I have tried all the kernels with viper and didn't have any problems. I don't use viper anymore but when I did, I preferred anthrax, not for any particular reason. Just try each one and see what you like and what works best for you.

I switched from Bricked to Faux and notice an increased performance in gaming, (NFS most wanted ad Wild Blood)
However, I did not wipe dalvik, is that an issue? what will be the effects?
Thanks a ton!

Actually, having the 3D GPU overclocked from 300MHz to 320MHz does increase 3D graphics performance more than you think. Increasing the 2D GPU's clock from 200MHz to 266MHz also increases 2D graphics performance substantially.

I honestly don't know why people feel the need to rebuild the Dalvik cache after installing a new kernel. The kernel isn't installed to the Dalvik cache's partition, so not wiping it when you install a kernel will have no effect at all.

Well according to the benchmark tests done by Anthrax, they don't do very much at all, if anything. I barley notice a difference from 1188 to 1566, it really depends more on the rom.

I was using Bricked before flashing Faux. Since bricked is just too laggy when I'm running games like Wild Blood and NFS most wanted. However, Faux eats alot of my battery. Is there any way to run games faster on Bricked? I already tried OC'ing my phone while on brick but it still is laggy

The same lag issue on NFS was happened with me..but then I got a solution...I'm on normal settings(no OC)
192-1188
266-228
486
On-demand
Noop
ZRAM
My heavy games are preety smooth now...how I achieved this ?
- Download kernel tuner from Market
- go to Thermald Section
Increase all the frequency to Max or U can Set my settings also...
THRESHOLD LOW
Max freq- 1188
THRESHOLD MEDIUM
Max freq- 810
THRESHOLD HIGH
Max freq- 648
LAUNCH NFS...IT'S SMOOTH NOW...
If it still feels laggy, Increase all the frequencies to your Max Frequency(means if ur Max freq is 1512, then set to 1512, in my case its 1188)
P.S. I'm never Using OC, cause I'm battery friendly guy and yes I'm getting a very good Battery life also

You can't tell which is the best kernel it depends on your choice and usage but in my opnion i am on faux kernel using ViperS 1.5.2 and its running smooth for now and no problem.
Bricked kernel is also good but gives random reboots...and antrax is totally a mess reboots, reboots and reboots...
Nand backup is not necessary but you should make bcz i got a problem with bricked kernel when i change the Governer from lagfree to Performance my phone reboots ,reboots with in 1 mint and even i cant open my phone....as a result full wipe and flashed rom again...
SO its up to u.....

The processor is being overworked for some reason. Also, SetCPU causes problems with Faux's kernel, you really shouldn't use it...that could be part of the problem. Another part is that you are lowering the device's max CPU threshold, which means it takes longer for your phone to carry out simple tasks. For a different CPU controller try No-frills CPU instead.
Yes, SetCPU is for SebastianFM Kernel ... and works very well ...
Try to flash again with SebastianFM option during install, for me work very well with or without SetCPU settings ...

Great! After No-frills is installed, the temp gets back to 30C. However the temp really is higher than stock Kernel. Is it normal?
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA
I wouldnt worry too much about that, 30C isnt too hot.. The phone is bound to heat up if you are playing with the CPU speeds. Plus running a custom Kernel, And even a case can keep the heat in..
Providing it doesnt get hot to the touch you should be fine.

I worry about it because some energy loses to surrounding through heat, thus battery drains much faster.

40 is still normal. But if it worries you too much. Try sebastians 1.30.2 1.512ghz kernel. You can use setcpu to clock it down to like 1ghz or 1.2 and see if it works for you.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
The processor in the Sensation is the same one that is in the Amaze. This processor is designed for 1.512GHz. On the Sensation, HTC underclocked the processor to 1.2. Increasing the clock back to 1.512GHz is not a true over clock, it is restoring what the processor is designed for.
go into power or battery I don't remember... then uncheck fast boot
and use system tuner instead

The only time you should be worried about the device is when it gets between 50-60C/122-140F. Even then it still isn't high enough of a temperature to harm the device.
XE and Sensation uses the same CPU?!! Got it
I flashed a new kernel-Faux123 ~
How to use system tuner? it sounds difficult..
Have you installed it yet? Everything is pretty much self-explanatory. Undervolting also help the cpu run cooler. Mine is undervolted -100mV. Very stable.
Installed
After I adjust the voltage in system turner, then...hand & restart.
1000mV for 1.51GHz, ok?
New problem found!
The fauxclock always gives a error message after adjustment...even underclock.

Bricked...find battery life better that overclocked kernel. And sweep2wake is great.
SebastianFM Overclocked kernel v1.4.1
This one is the best for me... 1728Mhz version is stable for me... Battery consumption is great (average use with wifi always on can last up to 2 days.. Using with set-cpu app to limit the higher frequency border sometimes when cpu power is not needed..
Faux. Very responsive, great battery life.
another bricked here. i thought sweep-to-wake was just a gimmick but after using it a little while i'd miss it if i couldn't have it. plus bricked is fast and stable and great battery.
Sebastians for my current rom....
I'm also using SebastianFM 1.4.1 kernel at 1782 mhz. Very stable and smooth. The battery life is fine for me, better than stock.
Don't know about anyone else, but I don't use 'kernals'...
I use 'kernels'
Just saying...
I use Faux123 v004, I tried different kernels and this is for me the best, it don't need setcpu to uc when screen is off and battery drain is so good (since 20h30mn I used 25% with normal utilization)..

Using v0.61
ShowP also offers great support for the kernel and its users. He is now currently working on Sweep2wake and sweep2lock. It's a great feauture that lets you easily wake and lock the screen just by swiping the softkey.

Overclocking implies increasing the CPU clock speed (more cycles per second).
Overclocking helps increase performance my overloading the processor thus, everything runs faster.
This can however cause phone hardware to ware out faster and cause overheating problems also.
our cpu can handle 1.5 ghz of clock speed. by default is set at 1.2.
the overclock is speed up the cpu above the maximum speed (es 1.7, the maximum stable clock we reached IMHO)
obviously high speed means less the battery, more heating and you risk to damage the cpu, because the frequency is above the max. limit
I personally keep it at 1.2ghz for daily use and at 1.5ghz for gaming, you should find you settings...
take a look to the governors, too. they are very important to control your device's response and speed. search for a specific guide to understand better
thanx allot to the both of you!!! helped me out heaps. Ill play around with it

Make sure the kernel is compatiable with your Rom and firmware! You can find then either in Android development, or themes and apps. Try development first. Good luck! remember over clocking can be more of a battery drain, just so you are aware of that. Have fun!

Best overclock value

Hello,everyone....recently I overclock my desire s and thanks to many of you I received many useful information so I want to share impression how overclocking has improved performance and battery to help other like us to know what and how to use overclocking and governor....
So I start ....
I use Viper saga with tweaked kernel 3.x/ondemand with deadline/cpu min.245-max.1410
I noticed that my graphic is very good and everything works like a charm....for example in FIFA12 I noticed that even the shadow of all player are so intense and everything is so clear,it seems that improves my graphic and my phone is faster..I hope that overclocking to 1410 to not damaged my phone. So what configuration do you have ?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
Set the governor to performance. Battery eater though. But u only can choose better battery life or smoother graphics, so make up ur mind and choose one
When playing with overclocking unstick 'set on boot'. So that it goes back to normal once reboot in case of any freeze. Overclock it based on ur desired value, experiment with it, slowly. increase the value step by step. Leave it for a day then increase again. If it freezes then u know ur phone's limit.

i have read that people say it's stable up to 1.5 GHz.
I have set mine to 1.3GHz to be on the safe side.
And set it to,on demand,so it only takes up more when it needs to.
setting it up to high speeds can result in a melt down, draining batteries and will shorten out the life of your phone even when stable for a couple of days so be aware of what your doing...
there is no best value for everyone, some say 1ghz is enough, some say 1.5 ghz is not enough.
so it depends on what you need, its a trial and error thing
u will get a fast response phone but battery life is sucs ... cant complain though
LOL? :what: how many threads must u made to ask a question? answer can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092673:D
why not just continue on your thread?

If you want separate screen on/screen off profiles, I would recommend daemon controller app (with andrev_oc installed through the app).
If you want more profiles for different situations, setcpu is probably the only real option.
Setting to 1.3 GHz depends on the kernel you're using, not on the app.

There is no best Rom/Kernel

When people ask hey what's the best kernel for my sensation ...well my friend there is no answer to that, but in my opinion (i have tried all kernels Pyd-x,bricked,sebFm,faux123,sultan,except trinity & few more) I think my favorites are (in order) also I tried all for a week or 2.
1.sebsatianFm-purely because it's slick and fast, never crashes.
2.Bricked-Near enough no problems but there is some lagg during the opening of app drawer, expansion of notification bar.
3.faux123-this is a good kernel as it lets you do a whole bunch of customization but rarely it will crash, other than that perfect.
4.Pyd-x (non-bootloop)-this kernel is intresting because its a kernel that's quite smooth although some laggy scrolling and but this is the non bootloop version, the actual kernel I like to call it 'Pyd-x with bootloop' has many bootloops (a bit obvious)
5.sultan kernel-Wow! Did you see this coming sultan this low well yes unfortunately it's very smooth (smooth as bricked) but the kernel tends to drop frequencies quite a lot (meaning the frequencies do not stay a the frequency you wish) and as soon as the phone gets hot it boot loops
Hope this helps it bit guys

Did you use the exact same settings across all the kernels? If so, what were your settings (i.e. governor, max freq, min freq, etc.)?
All at 1566mhz and all at on-demand and deadline to make it fair

Google for " Kernel pyramid-ics-crc-3.0.16-31a4fc7-1188Mhz_max " it will lead you to Mikhei777 ROM page.
There you'll find an Android_4.0.4_Sense_4.x_Kernel_Update_v5.zip (sorry, cannot post direct links yet)
This is an optimized stock HTC kernel and actually has a great performance/battery life on his own version of JB rom w/Sence 4.1. (never tried on other Sence ROMs).
This ROM is not quite as customizable as ViperS or Elegencia but is very close to what you'd expect from HTC if it was an official update. And it actually feels like a real deal too.
Check it out!
Update: sultan kernel 16.5 now I would put it second, it's fast and never crashes.
