Bye bye GS3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Well today is the last day that I will be a GS3 owner. My DNA is getting here tomorrow and god knows how many times I tried to stay with this phone. The radio issues makes my phone experience terrible.
I really love this phone though but all I can say is farewell GS3.

Have fun with that DNA....
I'll be happy with my superior device. Have fun with:
11gb memory
Incompatible apps
Giant menu button
Very little support
Heavy Sense
Awkward power button

lol. I hate the top power button on big phones like these. I cant even tell you how many times I've almost dropped my One X because of that.

Lol really now....Ill slap on a new launcher...and enjoy my quad core processor and 1080p screen hehehehe...

I'll just go into the future and get my s4 and both of you will be crying

with the M7 coming soon, the DNA is a lost cause,

I started with the

Inc1
Inc2
Rezound
Inc4
GNEX
DNA
SG3
very happy with my sg3

Well after these comments I actually went in to the Verizon store and played with it. I like it sense seems a bit different but easy to use. I don't use my phone 24/7 because I work 10hr shifts,...but it should last me a day or two on moderate use. I also played with the RAZR Max HD and it was great..defenetly a phone to look into.

Good luck on the 2 days of use....to achieve that, put your screen at the dimmest setting and put airplane mode on.
Honestly man, I'm trying to help you. Everyone wants the new toy. You will not feel any difference from your S3 except the screen. Sense bogs that phone down so hard that the home screen actually has lag.
Top-tier device with lag? No thanks. I played with one last night. My s3 is smoother. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be in here...

See, I disagree because I played with it today for at least 30 minutes. The Verizon rep kept coming to me asking me if I needed an upgrade lol...and I did not notice any lag. I opened Facebook and played a few games that were installed on the phone. I noticed that the phone needs a bit of tweaking with notifications and everything but other than that it was faster than the S3. I like the S3 because of the buttery scrolling but that is due to the scrolling affects. If I do not like sense I will just slap Nova Prime on it and be done with it

I dont know how to live with only 11gb of memory.... 3 nandroid backups... 2 rom zips, some music, some naked pics (of my girl of course) and i would be getting that annoying "insufficient memory" crap..
No thanks. I will stick with my Clean-S3 and 48 gb of memory.

NOOO! Not the DNA!!!
In all seriousness, get the Note2. Very nice step up from the S3. IMHO a 1080 screen is nice, but not worth all the other drawbacks.

You may not see lag at first but once you get all you apps and background services you'll see it lag. Htcs overlay really slows down phones. My s3 on the other hand hasn't slowed down yet even with a ton of apps and services running in the background. Also the s3 will most likely see more updates than the DNA.

Endorsed. The Note 2 is the phone to have right now...
Look at the Dev support for both phones. Nuff said....

Get WHATEVER you like. No card slot would be a dealbreaker for me, but who knows what other people's needs are. I have a 64gb card in my S III and it's almost full... but I also have a Nexus 7 with only 16gb and I deal with the limitations. Cloud storage is the next big thing for mobile devices, and if you're in a solid 4G area and don't have limited data, why not give it a shot.
Sidenote- I finally got to check out a friends Note 2 yesterday. WAY too big of a phone... for me at least... but it's a great device.

I agree, My dad has the note II and its huge....and he has it in an defender otter-box lol every time he bends down to do something his phone falls out of the clip.
I do not need a massive storage because I don't listen to music on my phone..I have a 32g I pod for that. I do take a lot of pictures though so I guess that I would have to transfer them to my PC every once in a while. The phone has more goods than bad but I will look into the lag and if unbearable then I will return it.
Thanks for the replies guys.

fyi - You could use "Sweet Home!" application to automatically send your pics in your gallery to your computer when you get to your HOME network and then you could auto delete it as well, if you want. Super neat app.

If you can get two days out of the DNA then you don't even need a cell phone, lol. If you left it sitting on your desk with no use it wouldn't last 2 days. The screen is nice but personally no SD card, hardly any dev support and a locked boot loader are deal breakers.
Spending 30 minutes in a Verizon store is irrelevant when they're making sure you get a sick WiFi and 4g signal!!
I will make a prediction of your actual usage - 24 hours on battery, 5 minutes of screen time!!
I have a friend who works for HTC and have played with every device they have. Personally I think the battery life on their phones make them useless.

So long, Thunderbolt

Got the phone a year ago for free from my mom cause VZW messed up her insurance and she got the Thunderbolt for no extra charge.
Charging port started to get really weak and you had to jiggle it around. Well, it completely got smashed in about 2 months ago. Dad has the same phone so he would charge my batteries whenever I was in town, but I usually just used a flip phone for calls and texts and my wife's old Captivate when wifi was around.
Dad offered to get me the Galaxy Nexus a few days ago before Verizon screws around with unlimited data.
I'm gonna miss you :crying:

I will agree with you. It's all in what Rom you use and how you set it up. If you let everything run like gps and auto sync, the battery will die quickly on any phone, its a given. Sync when you need too and use gps when you need it. Dim the screen when you can and don't overclock a ridiculous amount and you can easily get a day out of it. I haven't had any issue with my tbolt. My .02
You guys are lucky. I keep my screen dimmed, GPS and sync off, underclocked kernel, stick on 3g...
Generally when I leave the house to catch the bus, I'm at 100%. By time I get to work two hours later... 50%.
Granted the phone gets a lot of use during that time. But compared to my droid, droid 2 and even my old blackberry curve... The battery is atrocious.
Granted if I put it in airplane mode it can last a long, long time.
I love this phone... But the battery blows.

Skyrocket user turned to GNote! The love story takes a turn....

I'm a huge fan boy of Samsung.....amazing engineering and well priced for excellent product!
So naturally my first Samsung was captivate! then the skyrocket! Omg what a phone! Bigger screen crisper resolution.....no lag.....front facing camera! Thank you Samsung!
Then fate handed me a GNote! With a stylus! (my first smart phone had a stylus and I was devastated that they started phasing them out) this phone has a huge huge screen. Beautiful white body with great cameras. Everything and more then the skyrocket had. The phone does feel a tad bit bulky...one handed operation can be difficult...but once you get used to it....there is no turning back. I fell in love and the extra function of the s pen has added an extra dimension to smart phones today. I can take a picture of myself and customize a message to my wife. Not a generic template that every one with access to market place can use. But I can create a masterpiece and personalize everything for each person.
If you're thinking of getting a new phone the obvious choice is the GNote! How many processors do you truly need? If you need more then two...grab a PC. The real estate this phone offers is surreal combined with the ability to use the s pen to personalize every single message you send to someone is beyond worth the upgrade. Also the s pen can input complex formulas and mathematical problems that go into my calculus course....about to try it on my discrete mathematics class.
Go for it. Now who wants to buy a skyrocket??

LOL! Funny - I'm going back from a Note to a Skyrocket despite the fact that there's allot I enjoy about my Note. I love the screen, but I never find myself using the S-Pen like I thought I would and it's just too big for me to take it around on my belt easily (I get out and about a fair amount). I really like my Note it and may keep it as a backup (if I can afford to), but it's just not working out for me on a daily basis like I thought it would.
Far too large for me..

Well to each their own . You realize the hardware (processor-ram) is the same as skyrocket? So speeds are technically the same. Atleast I read they were. I could be wrong.
They are both great phones....but skyrocket is just too small a screen. I do alot of reading ebooks and webpages so the note is perfect for that.
So anyways...I love them both

I like the size of the note for playing around, but for ME it just isnt practical. That and the fact that me and my friends get a good laugh everytime we see someone holding the note to their ear talking on it.
I'm already close to my limit fitting my Skyrocket in my pocket yet alone a Note.. that thing is huge.

I had a note. I use my phone A LOT. The note was hurting my hand holding it all day and using the pen. So I traded for a skyrocket. I really really tried to like the note. You can make smart phones as large as you want, you can make one the size of a bus that you have to put a sim card in. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere, and for me, the note was just to big. Not to mention I was never seld conscious until I was holding that thing to my ear. If you want real estate, get a tablet. For me, the skyrocket is about as big as im comfortable with. To each his own, but its nonsense to try and convince someone otherwise, everyone knows what they want and can afford out of a phone, and will buy accordingly.
I had a Note for about two months, sold it.
Sorry, but you (anyone) look ridiculous using that phone, plus it's laggy (even custom ROMs) and it garnered too much attention from people for my taste.

Galaxy Nexus vs ThunderBolt

I'm debating jumping ship to the galaxy nexus. Anyone else made the jump? Pros vs Cons?
Sent from my ThunderBolt using xda app-developers app
I have heard that the galaxy nexus has some data issues like the bolt does. I also hear that the battery life isn't very good either.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I, personally, would say do it. Its the best Nexus device with LTE. I havent had any data issues on CM 10.1, and the device is just all around better. Certainly battery life sucks, but it sucks on all Android devices so you just have to choose your battles.
Basically, I would say go for it. I made the jump and it was awesome.
No comparison. The Gnex is my favorite android device so far (TB, Rezound, Gnex). The radios are a tad bit weak, but you are unlikely to notice a difference unless you live somewhere where you rock one bar regularly.
Only warning though, once you go nexus, there may be no going back. I miss some sense features, but consistent updating and tons of completely stable ROMs make it very worthwhile.
Get it. Get it now!

The nexus is pretty much guaranteed development support over time because of how easy it is for developing. Personally though, if you have the option pick up a GSIII instead. Having used both, I enjoy the GSIII much more.

depends on how much you use your cell
I jumped over to the Gnex about mid-nov, (being a grandfathered in unlimited data freak I had to buy used) love it due to the features but even with the extended battery makes me wish I'd of waited and got something later. Don't get me wrong rocking jellybean from the get go for me was worth the trouble, at first. But I have to charge my cell every 2-4 hours even with the extended battery in it if I use my phone as I did with my tbolt. Keep in mind I use mine for work reasons so having to constantly have a wire hanging off the end of it to stay on top of things drives me NUTS where on the tbolt I could go all day long without recharging, with the Rezound battery. I'd just place it on the charger at bedtime and I was good to go. So needless to say, I am an extemely heavy user, always on it. Phone, texting, emails only though, I don't use any apps really other than tapatalk & gmaps off and on. Being in the DC area I am always rocking full 4G bars.
With the Gnex I get about 20mins give or take of on screentime and thats it. So the only CON I can give is that the battery is horrendous but keep in mind I run stock and not a custom rom which is probably my problem, but I am too chicken to attempt changing it as my luck I'd bust it or something, the PROS everything other than the battery is a MUST HAVE in a smartphone. I must say if I can grab me a nice cheap S3 I might have to grab it with the way people seem to really like it, but I've never even seen anyone in my office have one to try it out for myself.
So all in all, it depends on the user and how much you'll use it, weekends I can go all day without a recharge as I only use it once in a while to text or respond to some annoying military contracter that doesn't know how to enter their password in a windows machine.
How the heck does a phone get less battery life than a Thunderbolt? Just learning that alone would make me avoid it... there has to be an Android phone that can at least get you through the day on a single charge (i can do that with my rooted Tbolt using the Rezound battery, but just barely).

I switched to the gnex around the same time, and I thought it was just my phone that had this same issue. I burn through a 2100 mAh battery in less than 5 hours even if it's just sitting idle. I've found some enjoyable ROMs, but this batty life is worse than the Tbolt.
I just posted this.
Make the move. Just bought two, one to replace my t-bolt. I too am a Verizon unlimited grandfather user and read in Money that gnex was Best of Rest pick of 2012 after iPhone. I love the phone. Development is great, battery life is not super, but better than t-bolt. Phone has an extended battery that is only slightly lager than stock; not the pregnant brick that t-bolt calls an extended battery.

The GNex is a more than capable device. I made the switch a month ago and wish I had sooner. My first Roms were aosp, aokp, then I found my personal favorite, JBSourcery. Battery life was poor on most Roms but Sourcery has improved it very much. Once you go Nexus, you'll never go back.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I swapped over to GNex back when the refurbs were $249, I wasn't happy with the battery life after having the TBolt's extended batter, so picked up this.
I went from a TB to the GNex back in August and I must say I love my Nexus. The screen is amazing and performance is excellent. As others have already pointed out, the battery life is the biggest draw back with the Nexus. I never got very good battery life with my TB (which is why I had 2 spare batteries for it) so I was more or less already used to the poor battery life.
All I can say is if you get the Nexus I'll bet you will wish you would have switched to it sooner. It is simply a great phone.

The only flaw I've found with the DNA is that if anything presses on the back too hard, you can end up with a permanent blue dot in the center of your screen. I dunno if the new screens are more prone to dead pixels, but a guy in the rezound forum had his DNA replaced for the blue dot issue and got a screen with dead pixels. (He works at a Verizon store). He ended up going back to his GSIII.

Phone getting very warm

Hello I just got my gs4 on Saturday and I have to say that im not as impressed as I thought I would be.
The phone gets quite hot during almost anything. Also is no where near as snappy as my rooted inspire (1.0 ghz single core with less than 1 gb ram). This phone is awesome as far as opening more draining apps like facebook.
I wouldn't think that rooting is needed to be quicker than a 2.5 year old phone...
At this point im considering trading it in for a gs3 or htc one....
And mine is definitely laggy

If it's getting very hot with little usage then I'd exchange it for another.
Also, an update was released today that pretty much solved the lag issues..
Mine got pretty warm last night while playing a simple solitaire game...
It was also eating battery pretty fast.
I rebooted it and it seemed to go away.

Are there any services or apps that is causing the CPU/Stay Awake to drain your battery?
My first G4 was horrible laggy as well, but my new one is a dream. See this thread.

Just search for jelly bean keyboard and it should be the first one.
mine gets stupid hot for the smallest things I surf the web for about five mins and you cant even put up to your ear to make a call TO HOT.. I returned it and got it exchanged and that device is also getting way to hot. I might just return the GS4 seems like a big issue out there I googled the problem and see that most people are having the issue. IDK 7 more days and I.m stuck with it... any other phone would be a downgrade.

There is probably something wrong with your phone and the next one. Bad luck I guess. It never gets hot on normal use for me. The only time it gets hot for me is when playing high end games.

Unless you dont mind being mocked for talking on a tablet I would avoid any phone larger than the s4. The note two has its place and it to me is only worthwhile if you carry a purse.... it's a great device but not practical in my opinion, I mean how do you carry that thing?

In my pocket never had an issue fits perfectly. As far as what others think about it don't matter to me.

I wish I wasnt as affected but I hate when ppl comment on how large my phone is...and I think its because I agree and wish it was smaller. A 4.5 or so with the the same build as this s4 would be mich nicer. And by that I mean a screen that efficiently uses the face of the phone.
Its really tough to determine what is the he perfect size screen and I think over time we will become more tolerant of the pocket consumption. I mean look at the inspire or other older 4.2...it was huge for its time but now its really not considered that anymore.
With that said for the time being I think 4.5 with the smallest possible chassis would be the best.

Not mine. I am in LTE or 3G all day and my phone does not get hot in the least.

Does Your GS4 Seem Laggy?

You know I bought this phone on the premise that even if loaded with bloat the Snapdragon processor in here should be enough to handle it and still provide seamless screen transitions, etc.
Sadly it seems that this phone is laggy. At times when screen transitions it will "stutter" or otherwise "hesitate" causing a poor user experience.
So I did tweak my ROM up some, disabled most of the bloat and the experience is now what I would have expected from it stock.
I also understand that I am coming from my own tweaked ROMS on other high end devices but I just expected more from this.
What do you all think? What phone did you come from?
Yay another thread about the lag lol

Yeah, I am debating whether or not to keep this thing.
Its nice but I was kinda expecting more punch from it. Plus its just line I dont need as I also want to keep my Verizon line so its up in the air right now.
I did stock rooted ROMS already from the latest OTA dumps but have not posted them pending testing.
I still have 12 days left to decide....

Honestly with the bloat frozen this phone is nearly the same as my s3 was out of the box "lag" wise. I love it...
Really hope you decide to stay around, have only ever heard great things about clean rom but have never gotten to try it!

Exactly, its the same as an S3 with 1/2 the processing power.
I have Note II and S3 ROMS that are much smoother... I guess its going to be hard to judge until I can tear it apart and do some tweaking to the OS more. It sjust my Note II, stocked seemed faster.
I dont know yet. Just trying to gather opinions. I am sure Samsung will smooth it up. They made huge strides with the Note II.
I'll check out your links tonight. Thanks for posting them!
I was thinking about returning it for the one which is smooth as hell

I have come from the note 2 as well and its unreal to realize the lag on this. Ive only froze the at&t bloat thinking it was enough but damn....its pretty bad.
Stock Note 2 smashes this. Im hoping if/when the bootloader gets unlocked, scrosler and other devs can make this GS4 into what its meant to be...a beastly device.
For now...its tolerable but its bad now because I expected more from a flagship phone.

Hey Scrosler, loved your One X roms! As far as the lag goes, it does definitely seem that my S3 was faster. It's made it hell deciding on whether I should keep my S4 or HTC One, since I was going to originally take the One back. Aside from the stuff you probably did already, try disabling the lock screen animation as well as disabling the home button from accessing S Voice (double click the Home button, then go to settings to disable). These are the two things that seemed to have helped the most with lag issues. Still not perfect by any means, but it's much improved. Now if I could just do something about the damn keyboard lag..

What about gaming. My girlfriend has the s4 and we did a head to head comparison of vice city and her one ran it smoother. That makes no sense to me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
My wife is not experiencing any of this prolonged lag. Consider us lucky. Ours is pretty solid. The first time I did notice lag was while unlocking the phone with the "majestic twinkle" effect. It did it intermittently. Turned that effect off. Now unlocks smooth. Also turned off all transitions. Much better. Theres no stutters or lag spikes. Its pretty darn good. For a stock experience we are satisfied. If Scot does decide to develop for this phone I am confident it will be CleanRommed.
Comparing it to my Note 2 running cleanROM is totally unfair though
Mines snappy idk what you guys are talking about!
Scott keep it! You leaving the One was a big reason why i switched, and a few of the other inconveniences that comes along with an HTC

But I would not blame you one bit if you ditched it!
I am seriously debating selling mine ( I paid full price ) and picking up a Nexus 4 but will wait until Google i/o before deciding what to do..
Same thing here I'm used to using my own ROMs, so there is that adjustment
But Scott as you know there is only so much that can be done with a ROM at the end of the day Samsung will have to adjust some things which then gives us a better base to work from, I'm sticking with this one till nexus 5 is out
Just my 2 cents

I will tell you this...
I had both and the One is 10x more smooth. Thats why I felt let down with this phone. I have to shut off / freeze damn near everything to get acceptable performance out of it. I know in time Samsung will improve but I am dealing wiht the here and now...

Yeah, I tweaked it pretty hard, minor stuff like build pror, caching, etc. Similiar to what I would do if I had a ROM built around it but... still..

Yeah, but you turned off the cool parts which I like. I always set my transistions to 50%, even in my ROMS but I wont turn them off. The twinkle affect should cause stutter after its done. I see lag just backing out of the Play Store to the desktop it will sometimes stutter. Not just the occasional lock screen lag in which I know you are referring to.

lol, I guess in a way I feel bad... But i never told anyone to buy the phone I do :crying:
I really dont know if I am going to keep this one. Its a whole differnt carrier, and a whole new line that I really dont need. And with the current level of performance its hard to justify keeping it.
This is why I started the thread. To see if it was me and my expectations or if the phone really is laggy.... And from the feedback, its laggy, its not just me.

Yes, I totally agree and I think its Samsung lack of experience with Snapdragon on 4.2.2.
I have Nexus 10 which is not as powerful as this phone but its a Sammy processor and there is ZERO lag with dual cores at 1.4 or is it 1.5 GHZ. And thats at nearly 4x the pixels that this has.
I was just expecting this thing to scream when I first got it...
Disable and android go hand and hand since the g1. My only problem with the os is the hardware needed to make this a smooth experince , a lot of work needs to be done with android. Its a great platform but nothing is perfect I guess
But hey android is getting better and better.
