I'm debating jumping ship to the galaxy nexus. Anyone else made the jump? Pros vs Cons?

I have heard that the galaxy nexus has some data issues like the bolt does. I also hear that the battery life isn't very good either.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I, personally, would say do it. Its the best Nexus device with LTE. I havent had any data issues on CM 10.1, and the device is just all around better. Certainly battery life sucks, but it sucks on all Android devices so you just have to choose your battles.
Basically, I would say go for it. I made the jump and it was awesome.
No comparison. The Gnex is my favorite android device so far (TB, Rezound, Gnex). The radios are a tad bit weak, but you are unlikely to notice a difference unless you live somewhere where you rock one bar regularly.
Only warning though, once you go nexus, there may be no going back. I miss some sense features, but consistent updating and tons of completely stable ROMs make it very worthwhile.
Get it. Get it now!

The gnex is going to have a Ubuntu mobile os release soon... Its tempting. But the gnex is old as well. It will be like the eris dev wise, Maybe
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda app-developers app
The nexus is pretty much guaranteed development support over time because of how easy it is for developing. Personally though, if you have the option pick up a GSIII instead. Having used both, I enjoy the GSIII much more.

depends on how much you use your cell
I jumped over to the Gnex about mid-nov, (being a grandfathered in unlimited data freak I had to buy used) love it due to the features but even with the extended battery makes me wish I'd of waited and got something later. Don't get me wrong rocking jellybean from the get go for me was worth the trouble, at first. But I have to charge my cell every 2-4 hours even with the extended battery in it if I use my phone as I did with my tbolt. Keep in mind I use mine for work reasons so having to constantly have a wire hanging off the end of it to stay on top of things drives me NUTS where on the tbolt I could go all day long without recharging, with the Rezound battery. I'd just place it on the charger at bedtime and I was good to go. So needless to say, I am an extemely heavy user, always on it. Phone, texting, emails only though, I don't use any apps really other than tapatalk & gmaps off and on. Being in the DC area I am always rocking full 4G bars.
With the Gnex I get about 20mins give or take of on screentime and thats it. So the only CON I can give is that the battery is horrendous but keep in mind I run stock and not a custom rom which is probably my problem, but I am too chicken to attempt changing it as my luck I'd bust it or something, the PROS everything other than the battery is a MUST HAVE in a smartphone. I must say if I can grab me a nice cheap S3 I might have to grab it with the way people seem to really like it, but I've never even seen anyone in my office have one to try it out for myself.
So all in all, it depends on the user and how much you'll use it, weekends I can go all day without a recharge as I only use it once in a while to text or respond to some annoying military contracter that doesn't know how to enter their password in a windows machine.
How the heck does a phone get less battery life than a Thunderbolt? Just learning that alone would make me avoid it... there has to be an Android phone that can at least get you through the day on a single charge (i can do that with my rooted Tbolt using the Rezound battery, but just barely).

My GS3 lasts most, if not all of the day depending on what I'm doing. I usually get between 4-4.5 hours screen on.

I moved from eris to incredible to tbolt to gnex and must say I LOVE this nexus device. BUT!!!! If I could get an s3 I would totally do it. Battery life on nexus is worse than the tbolt. Nexus is a great device, terrible phone.

I switched to the gnex around the same time, and I thought it was just my phone that had this same issue. I burn through a 2100 mAh battery in less than 5 hours even if it's just sitting idle. I've found some enjoyable ROMs, but this batty life is worse than the Tbolt.
I just posted this.
Make the move. Just bought two, one to replace my t-bolt. I too am a Verizon unlimited grandfather user and read in Money that gnex was Best of Rest pick of 2012 after iPhone. I love the phone. Development is great, battery life is not super, but better than t-bolt. Phone has an extended battery that is only slightly lager than stock; not the pregnant brick that t-bolt calls an extended battery.

The GNex is a more than capable device. I made the switch a month ago and wish I had sooner. My first Roms were aosp, aokp, then I found my personal favorite, JBSourcery. Battery life was poor on most Roms but Sourcery has improved it very much. Once you go Nexus, you'll never go back.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I swapped over to GNex back when the refurbs were $249, I wasn't happy with the battery life after having the TBolt's extended batter, so picked up this.
I went from a TB to the GNex back in August and I must say I love my Nexus. The screen is amazing and performance is excellent. As others have already pointed out, the battery life is the biggest draw back with the Nexus. I never got very good battery life with my TB (which is why I had 2 spare batteries for it) so I was more or less already used to the poor battery life.
All I can say is if you get the Nexus I'll bet you will wish you would have switched to it sooner. It is simply a great phone.

The only flaw I've found with the DNA is that if anything presses on the back too hard, you can end up with a permanent blue dot in the center of your screen. I dunno if the new screens are more prone to dead pixels, but a guy in the rezound forum had his DNA replaced for the blue dot issue and got a screen with dead pixels. (He works at a Verizon store). He ended up going back to his GSIII.

Okay, stupid topic, but I have to ask. Looking at selling my Fascinate and taking an early upgrade to a Thunderbolt. Seems to be a completely solid device, and I would love to get an HTC back in my hands after a year of Sammy pains.
Looking to find out from the folks who've had it for a minute what their opinions are?

So far, so good. I haven't rooted mine, because I really haven't felt the need yet.
I'm coming from the Sammy Vibrant, and I loved the phone.
I like this one better. Much more responsive, and it doesn't fall prey to the lag issues, the primary reason I rooted my Vibrant in the first place.
I'd say go do it. Awesome phone.

I upgraded from a D1. I kinda miss some of the control I had over that phone, but the devs had a lot time to master that device. The TB will get there as well especially since a lot of devs & themers have the phone.
I rooted mine so I could remove all the bloat (~250mb of junk). I am running the latest RUU and with a custom kernel.
I have been very happy with the Tbolt. The battery life has been better than I expected.
It's a great phone. I'd recommend it!
I love it but why not wait. You made it this far. In a month or so there will be better phones.

The only things I miss about the Fascinate is the size/weight and the gps. I get better reception with the bolt and I love being able to use data while I'm on the phone. If the boro has coverage like Hinesville, you'll welcome the better reception.
I had a fascinate too. Yea Def make the switch. Battery isn't as good, but it charges quick it about 40 times less laggy and runs circles around it. I had many issues with the fascinate with this not so much.
I would get one on eBay and save the upgrade in case you dont like it on either an iPhone 5 or Bionic when (if) they come out in a few months.

+1 fascinate forums are quiet now!
I jumped ship too last weekend and so far I'm loving it. rooting it is quite a pain tho, the fascinate was definitely easier to root. My battery life is the same or better than the fascinate while rooted on comm rom. radio and gps is much better on the tbolt too, at least in my experience.

GPS on my Fascinate was instant and accurate - within 3-5 feet usually. On my Thunderbolt it takes at least a minute to get a lock and it's never even close to 30 feet. I guess I was one of the few people with a Fascinate that had great gps from the minute I got it...

yea, you were definitely lucky! as of community rom, and the ED01 radio, it took at least a minute to lock on (which was better than before when it would take 5 min to lock on). my tbolt locks instantly, even inside.
I used an early upgrade to get my t-bolt, and I love it! DEFINITELY go for it.
Well first off verizon is suppose to get an lg monster like tmo. Also id wait just too see what htc is pushing out. Then you do have moto actually talking about doing what sony is to there phones. Aka go online type your esn in and they give you a specific unlock code for your phone but voids warranty for anything not having to do with bad hardware.

Love my thunderbolt! I did come from an Eris tho so I am quite awestruck.
Another one of these threads, eh?
There are several others, FYI.
All in all, I would think, despite the shortcomings (battery, gps, kinks), that most people here are in fact happy with their Thunderbolt. There have been, in my opinion -- and in such a short period of time -- great strides in development on this device.
My personal favorites (in no particular order):
- Voice + Data simultaneously;
- Ample RAM;
- Strong developer support;
- A fairly vibrant (albeit not necessarily the best) screen;
- Plenty of speed viz. no lag;
- Made by HTC;
- Easy to root (thanks to those who tirelessly made it easy to do with adb);
- 4G LTE!
My personal grudges (YMMV):
- GPS location acquisition;
- Battery efficacy (but remember, this phone isn't just a beast, but it's a first-in-class);
- Random reboots (more kinks that will be worked out, I'm sure).
If I had it to do over again, I would still have bought the Thunderbolt!
Good luck in whatever decision you make.
Hi Guys...
I have a Thunderbolt now (rooted) that waqs giving me problems I was going from 4g to 3g to 1x and then I wasn't getting any data at all. This started last night....I figured I would wait because it was a network problem
This morning the same thing was happening....I called VZ tech support and they told me before they send me a new phone...I have to go to a VZ store and get a new sim card. I unrooted my phone and went to the store. I got a new sim card and that didn' help. I called back tech support and they said they will send me a new Thunderbolt. I have a family plan and I have 4 phones on my plan (mine is the only smartphone) I asked if I can get a CHARGE...after some back n forth chat...he told me that they will send me a NEW Charge...and also a belt clip and screen protector for no charge....
I love my Thunderbolt...and I know there are pors and cons betwen both phones.....but I really use my Slingbox app alot and I wanted to get the charge because of the screen...so Monday or Tuesday my new charge arrives...
hope I didn't make a mistake not going with the Thunderbolt....thoughts??
I guess I will be in your forums more often now! LOL
I did the same thing. And I'm never looking back. I love my charge. It took about two days to get used to it bc of the plastic feel but now I love it. The phone runs so smooth with the voodoo lagfix and the roms are amazing and very slim. Your battery life is also amazing. Twice as long as Thunderbolt. Be happy you switched as your getting an AMAZING phone

The phone is much better after the latest update that was pushed out. The web browsing (flash content) used to be my biggest compliant. It was so slow and choppy. But now everything is right where it was at when using my old Thunderbolt. I do suggest rooting and custom Rom' ing it. Particularly the voodoo lag fix.

After the latest update the speed is very close between devices. I don't use Touchwiz, any replacement launcher works better. As mentioned, I do have a custom rom on my Charge. I used to use a custom rom on my Thunderbolt as well. (bamf 1.6) I get much better battery life out of the Charge. About three to four hours more. The browser lag was fixed by the last Verizon update. I would recommend the Charge over the Thunderbolt simply because I have had many fewer problems with the Charge and the battery life and the screen are amazing.
My wife has my old Thunderbolt and she emails me pictures that she takes on her Thunderbolt, so she can view them on my screen.
Hope this helps.

Hmm. You sound like an Apple fanboy.
Before they sell people Android phones they should make them pass an Android Proficiency Test. That way if they suck at learning about their phones and unleashing its true potential, they can go to Apple and let Steve Jobs rape them four different ways.

that's interesting since I've been rooted since I purchased this phone back in april and although I'm on CM7 with the leankernal running in battsaver mode, my phone doesn't even last all day when i'm on 3g and just texting and using auto-sync for my gmail and facebook.
the battery on this phone is absolute garbage, almost as bad, if not worse than the Eris' battery was.
if you arent getting throug a full day with that setup on 3G then there is more to the problem than the crappy battery.
i can just barely squeeze a day out of my phone on a sense rom and 4G coverage. it is very close, but i can do it if i dont mess with the phone and only use it when i actually need to use it (no fun)
but i just have a 1700ma slim battery, and my stock battery and i am good to go for a full day easily with heavy use.

What's your battery life like? Looks like we both have the same usage but I'm on the stock CM7 kernel and I come home after an 10 hour shift (12 hours off charger) with about 40% battery life left. After I get home I flip on the wifi and surf and play music until the battery dies which is usually an hour or an hour and a half.
extended battery, 40+ hours, 'nuff said
Got the phone a year ago for free from my mom cause VZW messed up her insurance and she got the Thunderbolt for no extra charge.
Charging port started to get really weak and you had to jiggle it around. Well, it completely got smashed in about 2 months ago. Dad has the same phone so he would charge my batteries whenever I was in town, but I usually just used a flip phone for calls and texts and my wife's old Captivate when wifi was around.
Dad offered to get me the Galaxy Nexus a few days ago before Verizon screws around with unlimited data.

I will agree with you. It's all in what Rom you use and how you set it up. If you let everything run like gps and auto sync, the battery will die quickly on any phone, its a given. Sync when you need too and use gps when you need it. Dim the screen when you can and don't overclock a ridiculous amount and you can easily get a day out of it. I haven't had any issue with my tbolt. My .02
You guys are lucky. I keep my screen dimmed, GPS and sync off, underclocked kernel, stick on 3g...
Generally when I leave the house to catch the bus, I'm at 100%. By time I get to work two hours later... 50%.
Granted the phone gets a lot of use during that time. But compared to my droid, droid 2 and even my old blackberry curve... The battery is atrocious.
Granted if I put it in airplane mode it can last a long, long time.
I love this phone... But the battery blows.

why i buy S3 with no built in kickstand and lol 1 flash camera
how many apps and game will compatible with ICS? ooohh..jellybean soon will launched
look at g-shop, mostly app/game min req was 2.2 aka froyo
most recent reason i stay with tbz only by their unique kickstand shape and dual flash camera( looking good and built in crucial hardware) lol
friend just got thhe SIII and loves it!
I use my phone a lot for schedules, contacts, emails, and Web related activities. I play one game... Angry birds. I also listen to podcasts, series, and music.
I'm having to switch to Verizon due to my new wife and coverage issues. I'd really like to get the ultra, but specs have been drilled so far into my head, I'm having trouble pulling the trigger. I'm going to have to keep this phone for two years.... Can some of you post your opinions now that you've used this? I'd like to believe, but part of me says wait for the LG g2. It's this phone smooth? How is screen? Battery? Battery is why I don't get the ONE, which is what I use on TMOBILE

I couldn't agree more. This phone is a beast in all respects. It's the smoothest running phone I've ever owned. Not once has it lagged. The battery will last me all day with moderate to heavy use and that's with gps on all day. Love this phone.

Battery is bad-ass .. I use my phone heavily from 6am till midnight and i still haven't dropped below around 65%.
I really like it. Its very fast and no lag. That was a BIG problem for me on my RAZR MAXX. Battery life is great.
One problem is that there may or may not be root in the future. I rely on root for a couple things so it will suck for me if I dont get root. I pretty sure it will come out sooner than later but you never know.
But beyond that, its a great phone and I have zero complaints (at least now ).
