Hello I just got my gs4 on Saturday and I have to say that im not as impressed as I thought I would be.
The phone gets quite hot during almost anything. Also is no where near as snappy as my rooted inspire (1.0 ghz single core with less than 1 gb ram). This phone is awesome as far as opening more draining apps like facebook.
I wouldn't think that rooting is needed to be quicker than a 2.5 year old phone...
At this point im considering trading it in for a gs3 or htc one....
And mine is definitely laggy

If it's getting very hot with little usage then I'd exchange it for another.
Also, an update was released today that pretty much solved the lag issues..
Mine got pretty warm last night while playing a simple solitaire game...
It was also eating battery pretty fast.
I rebooted it and it seemed to go away.

Are there any services or apps that is causing the CPU/Stay Awake to drain your battery?
My first G4 was horrible laggy as well, but my new one is a dream. See this thread.

mine gets stupid hot for the smallest things I surf the web for about five mins and you cant even put up to your ear to make a call TO HOT.. I returned it and got it exchanged and that device is also getting way to hot. I might just return the GS4 seems like a big issue out there I googled the problem and see that most people are having the issue. IDK 7 more days and I.m stuck with it... any other phone would be a downgrade.

There is probably something wrong with your phone and the next one. Bad luck I guess. It never gets hot on normal use for me. The only time it gets hot for me is when playing high end games.

Unless you dont mind being mocked for talking on a tablet I would avoid any phone larger than the s4. The note two has its place and it to me is only worthwhile if you carry a purse.... it's a great device but not practical in my opinion, I mean how do you carry that thing?

I wish I wasnt as affected but I hate when ppl comment on how large my phone is...and I think its because I agree and wish it was smaller. A 4.5 or so with the the same build as this s4 would be mich nicer. And by that I mean a screen that efficiently uses the face of the phone.
Its really tough to determine what is the he perfect size screen and I think over time we will become more tolerant of the pocket consumption. I mean look at the inspire or other older 4.2...it was huge for its time but now its really not considered that anymore.
With that said for the time being I think 4.5 with the smallest possible chassis would be the best.

Um it would quite help if you were to explain the reasons why you don't like this phone? And it would also really help if you didn't judge this phone stock because when its on the stock rom, its a piece of sh*t. I almost ran over this thing.

It shouldnt have to be rooted to compete with the g2 or mt4g...this beat the iphone 4 in a speed test. This thing lags on every scroll and takes a good 10-15 sec to open anything you touch. This isnt the first one ive experience this with either. Tmobile hyped this up like its hot sh** but its just cold diahrea

If you are clearly having issues why not custom rom it? I really don't understand why are you refusing to do something that has SOO MANY benefits and zero disadvantages. Sounds like lazyness to me. Shouldn't even bother with xda if you won't even root the phone

My wife and I both got the SGS4G at the same time she had all of the same complaints and eventually caved in and got a different phone. I on the other hand came to XDA and got help and now I am perfectly happy with the phone. the Vibrant had all of the same issues and its a software problem form Samsung. I loaded a custom ROM and all of the issues I had are gone. the great thing about software is that it can be fixed. Hardware issues are another story of which this phone has none that I have found. It is possible to revert back to stock firmware and software so that its like you never did anything if you want to sell the phone later. So this is not the place to vent about how crappy your stock phone is it is the place to come and load the software needed to fix it.
I'm.with you... I miss my mytouch 4g. Such an awesome phone. So many roms. So fast.

Honestly this is like if you bought a Ferrari and it had a rev limiter set at 2k with the top speed limited to 10mph but refused to turn off the limiters. The limiters are clearly there and you can clearly turn them off but you refuse to and instead of fixing the issue, you complain saying that you shouldnt have to turn them off and your ford fiesta is faster.

I know that rooting the phone isn't simply going to make all the problems go away. I absolutely hated this phone. Then when the new gb roms came out and all the tweaks started pumping out, I actually started to like this "p.o.s". But as it stands im at 1ghz slow as hell. And its like i said before i dont want to buy a phone depending on root in order to make it function like its supposed to. just a note you dont ever need a pc anyomre to cough root a phone and flash a diffrent rom at all all yuo need is root explorer and to start off the recovery from krylons cwm final and then the update.zip and then the custom rom or a few of them push the recovery record reboot install zip via update gets u to cwm and then install new rom never once haveing to touch a pc
and if your on froyo u can use the market and get root theres apps that work for that

If you want to complain about how bad this phone is try doing it on the T-Mobile forums so at least people who are thinking about buying the phone might be persuaded against it. Part Four, is that you?
Anyways, I've actually played with my cousin's MT4G (3 cousins have that phone). I honestly wouldn't say that the SGS4G falls too far behind it.
My cousins always complain about the battery life, since they can't even get half a day's worth with the screen at the lowest setting. On the other hand, the SGS4G put up excellent battery life since I got it. I ran it with its first brightness setting and easily got a full day's use out of it.
Speaking of the screen, you can't deny that this screen is quite beautiful.
As for the stock speed of the phone, I kinda have to agree that the MT4G is slightly better. It's not ridiculously faster, but it is faster by a hair. On a more interesting note, my friends had a rooted G2 which lagged more than my stock SGS4G.

Ill give you the screen, it is beautifull and that was a big selling point .my battery drains fast and charges slow ive downloaded maybe a couple apps, my display takes 99% of my battery and its at half power if you can believe that. I have two mytouch 4gs. The screen on that phone blows away the sgs4g. The only reason I don't use it is because the wife and daughter have taken them over and stuck me with this thing.
Mytouch4g running Faux123's AOSP rom gets well over a day with heavy usage. About the same as CM.
I like the sgs4g.... its what I'm stuck with for now... but its no where near what the mt4g has to offer.
Better camera. Flash. Better screen. Better wifi.
And AOSP.
This phone with every tweak and rom doesn't come close to the mt4g.
Sorry. But its true.

I recently received a CLN GS3 as a replacement phone for my Galaxy Nexus. They agreed to send me a 32GB model. I received it and under the battery on the sticker it does indeed say "WHITE 32GB". So then why would there be only 11.95GB total available? Do I need to format it or something? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Thanks,

I'm on my 4th replacement and I think they might have finally got it right this time but if they told him they were going to send him the 32gb version (which would match the storage size of his Nexus) then they should def be sending him the right one... I've heard of several people that have got to choose a new phone but they sure didn't offer me that when I went through about a million Nexus's... LOL I admit that I am picky when it comes to replacement phones but when they get paid every month and I pay an "out of contract" price for a new phone than they should be sending me a replacement that does not have scratches all over it... I guess it all depends on who you talk to... :fingers-crossed:
He can get a 32GB microSD for like $20 bucks. Getting into a replacement loop is not worth the risk lol.

Run a cpu monitor app to see how hot it actually is. Hot to one person might not be hot to someone else. If you get some solid info we could probably give you a better idea of what you should do.
When is it hot? All the time or only when you are playing hardcore games? Running hot is not a good thing to have but some replacements could be much worse. Obviously you can get another one but if it isn't really that hot it might not be worth the risk/annoyance of going through more replacements.

Con and myself both coming from the rezound anything up to somewhere around 130F has become normal for me.
An example of where it depends on the person is with the new iPad. People were complaining about it getting to 110F with is a perfectly normal temp to me.
It really comes down to what you are used too, as con said. My rezound would hit 150 when really stressing it. My GSIII hasn't gotten that hot yet.

Like uncomfortable as it in like just warms your hand well or like it is actually like causing a burn? I agree with nosympathy. The Rez was a warm phone. If you were really hammering the 4G it would get pretty warm.
edit: I keep my phone in an otterbox so mine might as well be alot warmer than I think it is. The phone has to make alot of heat for it to go all the way through the otterbox.
Well it's weird because with experience from every phone I've had before this and iPhones and such, I wouldn't expect any noticeable heat. And then the Qualcomm S4 is supposed to be the coolest running processor, yet this phone is much hotter than any Galaxy Nexus I had.

Well after these comments I actually went in to the Verizon store and played with it. I like it sense seems a bit different but easy to use. I don't use my phone 24/7 because I work 10hr shifts,...but it should last me a day or two on moderate use. I also played with the RAZR Max HD and it was great..defenetly a phone to look into.

Good luck on the 2 days of use....to achieve that, put your screen at the dimmest setting and put airplane mode on.
Honestly man, I'm trying to help you. Everyone wants the new toy. You will not feel any difference from your S3 except the screen. Sense bogs that phone down so hard that the home screen actually has lag.
Top-tier device with lag? No thanks. I played with one last night. My s3 is smoother. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be in here...

See, I disagree because I played with it today for at least 30 minutes. The Verizon rep kept coming to me asking me if I needed an upgrade lol...and I did not notice any lag. I opened Facebook and played a few games that were installed on the phone. I noticed that the phone needs a bit of tweaking with notifications and everything but other than that it was faster than the S3. I like the S3 because of the buttery scrolling but that is due to the scrolling affects. If I do not like sense I will just slap Nova Prime on it and be done with it
I dont know how to live with only 11gb of memory.... 3 nandroid backups... 2 rom zips, some music, some naked pics (of my girl of course) and i would be getting that annoying "insufficient memory" crap..
No thanks. I will stick with my Clean-S3 and 48 gb of memory.

NOOO! Not the DNA!!!
In all seriousness, get the Note2. Very nice step up from the S3. IMHO a 1080 screen is nice, but not worth all the other drawbacks.
You may not see lag at first but once you get all you apps and background services you'll see it lag. Htcs overlay really slows down phones. My s3 on the other hand hasn't slowed down yet even with a ton of apps and services running in the background. Also the s3 will most likely see more updates than the DNA.

Endorsed. The Note 2 is the phone to have right now...
Look at the Dev support for both phones. Nuff said....
Get WHATEVER you like. No card slot would be a dealbreaker for me, but who knows what other people's needs are. I have a 64gb card in my S III and it's almost full... but I also have a Nexus 7 with only 16gb and I deal with the limitations. Cloud storage is the next big thing for mobile devices, and if you're in a solid 4G area and don't have limited data, why not give it a shot.
Sidenote- I finally got to check out a friends Note 2 yesterday. WAY too big of a phone... for me at least... but it's a great device.

I agree, My dad has the note II and its huge....and he has it in an defender otter-box lol every time he bends down to do something his phone falls out of the clip.
I do not need a massive storage because I don't listen to music on my phone..I have a 32g I pod for that. I do take a lot of pictures though so I guess that I would have to transfer them to my PC every once in a while. The phone has more goods than bad but I will look into the lag and if unbearable then I will return it.
Thanks for the replies guys.

fyi - You could use "Sweet Home!" application to automatically send your pics in your gallery to your computer when you get to your HOME network and then you could auto delete it as well, if you want. Super neat app.
If you can get two days out of the DNA then you don't even need a cell phone, lol. If you left it sitting on your desk with no use it wouldn't last 2 days. The screen is nice but personally no SD card, hardly any dev support and a locked boot loader are deal breakers.
Spending 30 minutes in a Verizon store is irrelevant when they're making sure you get a sick WiFi and 4g signal!!
I will make a prediction of your actual usage - 24 hours on battery, 5 minutes of screen time!!
I have a friend who works for HTC and have played with every device they have. Personally I think the battery life on their phones make them useless.

Its constantly freezing forcing me to restart the phone, getting hot and just driving me nuts. I've officially had it. I cant take it anymore. Im fed up. Im disgusted. I cant think of any more ways to describe what im feeling. Called Att a few minutes ago and now have a black htc one otw. I cant wait to recieve a premium phone thats acts as such.:banghead:
Now to the fan boys. I was one of you until recieving my s4. I am now officially jumping off that wagon. Samsung better do a much better job in the future if they ever hope to see another penny from me ever again!

try to factory reset it or firmware initialization in kies before you take it back. 50/50 chance it fixes your lag. plus an at&t OTA update happened today that has addressed some lag issues also.
The HTC One is a very nice phone..
I was ready to sell my S4 and get a Nexus 4 because of the lag issues I was having.. I had deleted over 100 apps / processes and had to tweak a bunch of settings just to get the phone usable..
Then today something strange happened..
AT&T released an update that has solved all my issues. This phone is now lightning fast and I am 99% pleased with it..
Enjoy the HTC One as it's also a very nice device!

Just exchanged my HTC one in today for one of these bad boys.. both are awesome, the s4 is far more convenient than the one is software wise.. im thinking the camera is slightly better on the s4 also. Htc definitely has it when it comes to design and build quality but reception and wifi is kinda botchy (assuming its due to aluminum casing).
Have fun with your battery life OP

I'm even more pissed than you. Want to know why? You started another thread about lag. I think anyone that starts stupid threads when there are already 100,876,342,956 stupid threads of the same thing should be banned for life from XDA.
Also, the HTC One is a fantastic phone, but do you think anyone here actually cares if your returning your S4? Return it and get a life chump. Nobody cares.

OP as it appears you are unhappy with your device, I can provide a solution to your thoughts>>>>Here. Thank You.
You know I bought this phone on the premise that even if loaded with bloat the Snapdragon processor in here should be enough to handle it and still provide seamless screen transitions, etc.
Sadly it seems that this phone is laggy. At times when screen transitions it will "stutter" or otherwise "hesitate" causing a poor user experience.
So I did tweak my ROM up some, disabled most of the bloat and the experience is now what I would have expected from it stock.
I also understand that I am coming from my own tweaked ROMS on other high end devices but I just expected more from this.
What do you all think? What phone did you come from?

Yeah, I am debating whether or not to keep this thing.
Its nice but I was kinda expecting more punch from it. Plus its just line I dont need as I also want to keep my Verizon line so its up in the air right now.
I did stock rooted ROMS already from the latest OTA dumps but have not posted them pending testing.
I still have 12 days left to decide....

Honestly with the bloat frozen this phone is nearly the same as my s3 was out of the box "lag" wise. I love it...
Really hope you decide to stay around, have only ever heard great things about clean rom but have never gotten to try it!

Exactly, its the same as an S3 with 1/2 the processing power.
I have Note II and S3 ROMS that are much smoother... I guess its going to be hard to judge until I can tear it apart and do some tweaking to the OS more. It sjust my Note II, stocked seemed faster.
I dont know yet. Just trying to gather opinions. I am sure Samsung will smooth it up. They made huge strides with the Note II.
I'll check out your links tonight. Thanks for posting them!

I have come from the note 2 as well and its unreal to realize the lag on this. Ive only froze the at&t bloat thinking it was enough but damn....its pretty bad.
Stock Note 2 smashes this. Im hoping if/when the bootloader gets unlocked, scrosler and other devs can make this GS4 into what its meant to be...a beastly device.
For now...its tolerable but its bad now because I expected more from a flagship phone.

Hey Scrosler, loved your One X roms! As far as the lag goes, it does definitely seem that my S3 was faster. It's made it hell deciding on whether I should keep my S4 or HTC One, since I was going to originally take the One back. Aside from the stuff you probably did already, try disabling the lock screen animation as well as disabling the home button from accessing S Voice (double click the Home button, then go to settings to disable). These are the two things that seemed to have helped the most with lag issues. Still not perfect by any means, but it's much improved. Now if I could just do something about the damn keyboard lag..

My wife is not experiencing any of this prolonged lag. Consider us lucky. Ours is pretty solid. The first time I did notice lag was while unlocking the phone with the "majestic twinkle" effect. It did it intermittently. Turned that effect off. Now unlocks smooth. Also turned off all transitions. Much better. Theres no stutters or lag spikes. Its pretty darn good. For a stock experience we are satisfied. If Scot does decide to develop for this phone I am confident it will be CleanRommed.
Comparing it to my Note 2 running cleanROM is totally unfair though

I had both and the One is 10x more smooth. Thats why I felt let down with this phone. I have to shut off / freeze damn near everything to get acceptable performance out of it. I know in time Samsung will improve but I am dealing wiht the here and now...

Yeah, but you turned off the cool parts which I like. I always set my transistions to 50%, even in my ROMS but I wont turn them off. The twinkle affect should cause stutter after its done. I see lag just backing out of the Play Store to the desktop it will sometimes stutter. Not just the occasional lock screen lag in which I know you are referring to.

Yes, I totally agree and I think its Samsung lack of experience with Snapdragon on 4.2.2.
I have Nexus 10 which is not as powerful as this phone but its a Sammy processor and there is ZERO lag with dual cores at 1.4 or is it 1.5 GHZ. And thats at nearly 4x the pixels that this has.
I was just expecting this thing to scream when I first got it...
Disable and android go hand and hand since the g1. My only problem with the os is the hardware needed to make this a smooth experince , a lot of work needs to be done with android. Its a great platform but nothing is perfect I guess
But hey android is getting better and better.
