If it's part of your home network and you have WiFi, you can use es file explorer to connect your note to your home network to transfer files. If you want wireless access for a drive that you can carry with you, you might want to checkout Kingston's wireless portable drives.

No i want only connect portable hard drive to my n8000 . I need to use this
Why no one have not solution for this ?

You note will not accept an external HDD as it has some sort of safety device built in to protect against device over drawing also do not try to plug in HDD with an external power supply one member tried it and it fried his note.
Just connect it to a network or use a direct wifi apps from play store which are more easy to transfer data, another way is to install All share on your laptop and share the folders

I connected my powered 1 terribite hdd by connecting the hdd to the power supply, connecting a powered hub to my note through an otg cable and plugging the hdd into the hub and works fine.
If your hdd isn't powered you may still be able to use it but you need a powered hub.
I also use paragon ntfs app as my hdd is only ntfs and not fat32

The Kingston WIFI drive is what I may get next year. It's self powered and comes in a variety of sizes. Here's a link with info.

is it possible that one model of brands need a low ampere and compability with n8000 without the external power ?

[Q] external hard drive?

Whilst waiting for my transformer to arrive I'm wondering what other toys I could get to go alongside it. I believe that android now has USB host but could I get one of those small USB drives to work with it? I'm looking at a small drive that would require power from the USB ..... can the Asus power such an item???
is there really nobody who can tell me if i can power an external mini HD from the USB ports ?
The thing is, I doubt many people actually have the keyboard dock yet - so until they are more freely available your guess is as good as anybody's

I'm sure there are just give them more than 20 minutes
I would say it it has external power source or runs on its own battery it should work. I would assume your tablet couldn't power it for long

I understand that the keyboard is rare/unavailable but its more of an android principle thing ... is there any reason why android wouldnt support a USB HD ?
I believe that USB host is now available but does Android allow power out via USB ?
The battery in the dock could help sustain power draining USB devices.
I think this is what your looking for.

NTFS HDD supported?
Anybody knows if NTFS formatted HDD will work out of the box?
NTFS support
Someone in this forum just mentioned that in the Tranformer user manual page 35, it mentioned Tuxera software that provides NTFS interoperability.
Now, with that info from the Transformer user manual, it gives a big hope that it does support NTFS.
Anyone with a Transformer, can you guys confirm that it will read NTFS formatted HDD?
I've just tried that with an external 750Gb hard drive formatted to NTFS - it has mounted successfully and can browse files just fine! Whee!
WD passport works fine on mine.. 250g ntfs

WD External HDD NTFS works well.
Some brandless Fat32 thumbdrive is working as well.
However, i cant get my sandisk cruzer fat32 to work
when i plug it in, the notification bar will show 'preparing to connect' for like 1 second and gone. The thumbdrive is then not mounted. Initially ive tot that it was due to U3 launchpad on the cruzer, so ive tried to reformat it and removed the launchpad. However, it is still not working. Anyone with similar experience

Does the Xoom support portable USB hard drives?

I've been searching all over and I cant find a definitive answer on this.
I have a Toshiba portable USB hard drive that gets its power from the USB connector (it does not have a separate power supply).
Can I hook this up to my Xoom and watch movies/tv shows from it? Does the Xoom support USB hard drives or thumb drives at all?
Sorry in advance if this has already been answered.
Thanks
Yes but you need a USB OTG cable. Not sure if the Xoom will power an external hard drive that runs off of USB only though, you might need to get one if those cables that splits off for power.
I can't get anything to work, even with a USB OTG cable, and I have 3.2 installed.
When I bought the cable it said this ...
This adapter allows you to plug a USB memory stick pen drive so you can play music, videos, backup & transfer files and view photos.

The Motorola forum says it can't be done, yet.
Others say you need to root the phone.
I'm sure you need to unlock and install tiamat rom I think?
I'm new to these forums as of today,
But i've read around the forums, and it seems to me that 3.2 doesn't support USBhost, and therefore PENdrives/USBHDD's cannot be used.
As Kippui stated, you will need to use a custom ROM with USBhost support, before you will be able to use the HDD at the very least

Not true about the newer Passports, for example. I have a 1st generation 250GB Passport that can only work if I use a powered hub, but my brand new USB3 650GB Passport works fine and is fully powered by the Xoom.
Please note, I am unlocked, rooted, and running a custom Rom/kernel that supports USB Host Mode.
Stock Honeycomb does not support USBOTG/host mode.
xoom 2 support usb otg with stock firmware
I would go on eBay and buy an Angled USB OTG cable. I got two of them on their for around $7-$8. It's better because you don't have a wire sticking out of your tablet.
I'm paranoid on breaking my ports.

How to use usb otg cable?

Ok so I finally got myself a usb otg cable, but how do I use it? Do I have to install any special driver for it? Is there a way to test if the cable is functional? At the moment nothing happens when I connect the cable and the pen drive..
Those who are using it, please do guide..
Proud to own a Galaxy R
it should work without any such additional driver...
Just insert it and u should see a message in notification like 'usb device connected' and 'click here to safely remove usb device'
u can access all ur file of pendrive in the location
/sdcard/usbStorage
I'v tried pen drives & wireless mouse... they all worked perfectly

Ok.. And which rom and kernel version are you using??
Proud to own a Galaxy R
To use otg u dont require any special kernel or rom, its native feature and will work on all stock and custom roms/kernels.

insert cable and plug any pendrive in it (make sure its formatted with FAT file system). notification about usbstorage will appear in ur status bar. if u r not able to connect than maybe cable is faulty, if u have other phone which supports usb otg (gs2, gnote, in nokia n8, c601, e7, 701 etc) u can try over it.
I installed usb host controller from Google play and it is showing this error :
Proud to own a Galaxy R
its usb host controller and no one is sure that sgr supports usb hosting or not.
just try with simple fat formatted pendrive and if its not working than maybe ur cable is faulty, u can ask replcement or refund.
Dude, Stupid as it may sound, but hope u are not trying to connect a usb hard drive coz that requires an additional usb hub for power.
I ask becoz I have been there. Was pretty convinced that I bought a cheap faulty otg cable until a tried a fat pendrive
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA
Haha.. No no I'm testing with pendrives that are formatted on fat32.. According to the videos I saw online, the phone is supposed to detect and notify when the cable is connected but I don't get any notification.. So I'm pretty sure that the cable is faulty..
And I don't have any other phones to test it on, neither do I have a ps3 controller to check if it works as well..

buy such things from local stores or trusted ebay sellers so that in cases like this item is damaged or not working, u can ask refund or replacement.

I have the Toshiba 1TB external that connects with other tabs (no external power). The Note 10.1 "tries" but fails. Perhaps a power issue as this drive has connected with android tabs in the past.
I'vegot an old Buffalo DriveStation 1TB drive. It's an externally powered 3.5" disk with a USB 2 interface. Just tried it and it works really well. Films stream very smoothly and theres no delay in accessing files.

I possibly have the same drive. The only way I can use it is to use a usb 'Y' cable which has 2 usb plugs and 1 usb socket, you plug the hard drive into the socket, one plug goes to the tab and the other one goes to an external usb power supply i.e., laptop or usb mains power adapter. If you can't find one they're easy enough to make, just google it.
From what I understand, our Tabs don't supply enough power to run high power devices such as most usb hard drives.

Correct. Note 10.1 does not have the power to handle a hdd, only flash drives.
You could try streaming from the drive to your note over wifi? Although that would only help at home.

Are you asking how to connect the HDD to your Note 10.1 or how to connect it AND get USB 3.0 speeds? I see you say that USB 2.0 is ok, so does that mean you can get it connected?
If you're trying to get a USB 3.0 connection, you won't be able to unless your Note 10.1 USB adapter supports USB 3.0.

Yes, I'm asking how to connect the HDD 3.0 to my Note 10.1. I tried to connect it to Asus Slider, it's ok. Samsung doesn't support for Note 10.1, while Note 10.1's hardware configuration is stronger than Asus Slider

Hold up, you have a USB 2 USB flash drive that works or a USB 2 HDD that works?
No-one that's been on here has said they can get a portable HDD working. A message, "High Powered USB Device Has Been Detected" comes up and the HDD doesn't work. It has to be a powered HDD...
So, if you can get a USB 2 HDD working, powered by the Note, we want to know what brand, size and adaptor brand and where you got it...
Otherwise, no you can't use a Portable HDDon the note 10.1 unless it's powered... Forget USB 2 or 3, it just won't work...

Amen to that. My now-departed Toshiba THRiVE 10.1 had that capability and I miss having that feature on my Note.

USB 3.0 IS backward compatible with USB 2.0. I have a USB 3.0 HDD plugged into my PC's USB 2.0 ports right now. I just don't get USB 3.0 transfer speeds.
I'm with the majority on this one. I don't believe that the HDD being used is an externally powered HDD. The Note 10.1 can not power a USB HDD that large.

USB 3.0 is compatible with USB 2.0.
The only problem is HDD power and file system.
get a IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 Cable! or a USB Y cable.
so you can supply extra power to HDD.
also OTG Cable:
APP: Paragon NTFS & HFS+

Thus negating the portability of the note... If I want a Desktop I'll use the one I have already....
Only other option is to use a wifi enabled HDD (like Seagate Goflex satellite Pro in both 500Gb or 1Tb versions now)... Works fine but REALLY eats into your battery life....
Anybody ever tried with an external usb drive with ssd?
Still cheaper than sd cards and more convenient, but don't know if power from the note is sufficient
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Bit expensive for something I can use a hell of a lot cheaper usb drive for... Not even sure it would work if the note detects its a HDD..
The problem is not that it's a hdd (a friend of mine has a 250gb drive which works fine when attached to my note, though it's not manufactured anymore), the problem is power. As i assume that an external drive with a ssd draws less power, it *should* work, but before actually buying one, I'd like to be sure

shouldn't this be a kernel problem ?
i also can trick my note to accept my xbox360 controller even while it should give the same message about high performance device.
(first i attach the x360 controller to the otg cabel and then i attach the otg cabel to my note...it works :victory
however i cant get my hdd to works with that method but many other tablets have no problems with high performance devices and thats because there is no restriction in the kernel.
is there a kernel for the note 10.1 that handles this problem ?

with the use of a ssd i wanted to circumvent the use of another kernel, because hopefully the ssd just doesnt need that much power. However i'm not certain about that, hence the question
